1 From the President 20th December 2017 Welcome to the festive season. On Friday 1 st December the Xmas lights on the Hastings Street tree roundabout were turned on by Olivia, our Summer Surf Girl. She was well supported by many nippers and some SRC s on a beautiful evening. We greeted Santa with his Elves when they arrived from NZ, on their way north. He loved being with the nippers and the Noosa Club so much, he decided to have a sleep over and enjoy some further festivities with the Patrol Members and families at the Life Saving Xmas Party at the Peregian venue the following night. And wow what a fabulous evening with the wonderful decorations, lights and of course the food. The Life Saving Committee excelled this year and I congratulate Roger and his team for a fantastic function on behalf of all members. thank you. On Sunday 10 th December the Today Show [channel 9] filmed live from Noosa Beach and was highlighted by the Nippers Marchpast Team consisting of 21 nippers marching along our beach and proudly flying the Noosa Flag out in front of the reel. They then interviewed Darren with all the team standing behind giving him their full support and in turn, Darren returned it to them. It was a terrific interview that was then followed by many nippers running off into the water and catching some waves on boards. I particularly wish to sincerely thank all the JAC Team and Nippers who turned up early and for helping to highlight the Noosa Surf Club live throughout Australia.. well done. Last month a General Meeting was held at Peregian to update members on Club activities, approve an increase to Bursary funds for our youth and receive reports from the Directors. It was a very informative meeting and highlighted by the introduction of many of our young members in attendance and a report from the Peregian Beach Working Party. Following the meeting a relaxing social hour was held with Pizza and refreshments supplied by the club, which provided the opportunity for many members present, to meet our younger members unknown to them. Again, more great news following on from the drop in members last year is that new SRC s and Bronze members are being trained and entering our Patrols. To date this season 55 new bronze holders and 45 new SRC members making approx. 100 total. However, this takes many hours of commitment and training by our Trainers and Assessors as well as lifesaving staff and we are very grateful for their efforts to move our Club forward.

2 Cont. Round 3 of Oceans 6 was held down at Wollongong last weekend in small to medium surf conditions. Our ladies made it 3 out of 3 when they won the open taplin for the 3 rd time straight. Noosa has never in its proud history ever achieved a result in Open Competition anywhere near this fabulous feat. We all offer our congratulations to Lana, Electra & Jordan. Other results will be posted further along this newsletter. Let s not forget the fantastic result achieved by our Masters- Board Riders when they won overall Gold at the Surfing Competition down the Gold Coast last weekend. Check the photo out and I say good stuff Kirsty for your passion and the way you are developing and mentoring our new Golden Breed. The Peregian Beach Working Group have continued to explore all possible options for the future of volunteer lifesaving at Peregian Beach and any involvement of the Club. Meetings have been held with community groups including the business community and two open days were held to gauge resident s opinions and collate their thoughts for the future. A report was presented at the recent General Meeting and since then a further meeting has been held with the Noosa Shire Council to present one possible long term concept and also gain knowledge of where they considered the Club should focus for the future. R.U.O.K. stands for Are You OK. The senior RUOK boat crew is now very close to heading south to compete in the George Bass Marathon, starting in Sydney on January 1st. The course is from Batemans Bay down to Eden, a distance of approximately 180kms!! We all wish them well and trust that they do not turn left along the way as the next stop will be the land of the Long White Cloud. See more info in the newsletter. I wish you all a safe and enjoyable Xmas whether with family or friends and whilst the morning Patrol on Xmas Day is full we do require more support for the afternoon Patrol. Merry Christmas Yours in Life Saving Ross President

7 Hi Clubbies, As you read this, the Masters crew are down on the South Coast of NSW steeling themselves as they look out to sea and contemplate the first day rowing of the George Bass Surf Boat marathon and of course wondering how we will handle the 6 days following the first day. We have been putting in long hours of rowing and other training including the comedy show that has been change overs of rowers at sea. We are getting stronger and smarter with all of the above and expect to do our club proud in the Veteran s category. The masters combined crew of Mick Curwen, Chris Beaufort, Steve Hatton, John Jenkins, Steve Porter and Gerard Broersen, all well known Noosa Rowers. Also being joined by Warren Witten (Woolgoolga), Steve Matters (Coolum) and Shane Radovich (New Zealand) with Steve Freckelton and Joel Tweedy crewing the support boat. As you can see, it takes far more than the normal crew of 5 to tackle the George Bass Marathon and we must thank our ring-ins and of course our sponsors and partners, Shadforths, Ricon, RU OK, our own Noosa Surf Club and all of you who have bought raffle tickets and been giving us moral support over the past few months that have helped us to make this happen. November and early December have been a time of pain with long rows every day to get our bodies, hands and minds into a state of readiness. As you would realise a marathon of 190 kilometres in length is totally different to the 4/5 minute events that we normally compete in, but I have no doubt we will be more than ready to go on the 31 st December for the start of the event at Batemans Bay, rowing our surfboat with pride and strength down to Eden. There are over 30 crews entered this year with several ski paddlers also entered, so we expect the competition to be strong with many local clubs that are familiar with conditions pegged as the favourites, but there are also crews from as far afield as Darwin and I expect many dark horses that could surprise all. We are looking forward to the contest, and the camaraderie that will come from the shared experience and will certainly carry the Noosa flag high. Thanks for your support and taking an interest. Yours in Surf Boats Gerard Broersen and the George Bass Masters crew

9 1 st of December 2017 To Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club Management Committee Re: UQ SLSQ Leadership Excellence Program 2017 On behalf of the Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club representatives at the UQ SLSQ LEP 2017 I would like to thank the Management Committee for its support which has enabled us to attend this prestigious program. The program had a focus on professionalism and leadership which was a point of difference to most Surf Lifesaving camps and was offered to members aged years old. We stayed at the UQ Women s College and attended sessions on the UQ St Lucia Campus. Not only were we able to meet like-minded young people and future leaders from Surf Clubs all over Queensland we attended many informative sessions and heard from impressive guest speakers. Some of these included: Networking and First Impressions Dr Dimity Dornan- Hear and Say Founder and Dr Mark Loane AM- Former Wallabies Captain and Ophthalmologist Wellbeing and Mental Health Team building activities Rob Campbell Strategic Planning Michael White- Conflict Resolution Leadership in a Crisis Situation Sustainability Kaitlyn Akers- Culture, Capability, Collaboration, Change and Continuous Improvement I know that I took a lot away from these sessions and had an insight into many of the inner workings of the surf clubs and SLSQ of which I was previously unaware. We were able to meet and network with members of the SLSQ Board, SLSQ staff and other surf clubs and hear about their experiences in Surf Lifesaving and what they are doing to assist the organisation. It was also interesting to find what problems other Surf Clubs are facing and how they work differently to our Surf Club as well as sharing and receiving advice. It was a privilege to be given the opportunity to attend this program and represent NHSLSC. We have gained skills and knowledge which we are excited to bring back to the club and use in other areas of our lives; work and study. We are inspired to take on greater responsibilities and use our skills and experiences to contribute to the continuing success of the club. If anyone would like to know more about the program and my experiences, don t hesitate to contact me. I have attached a photo of the attendees. Yours Sincerely, Charlotte Webber
