RC BEES of Santa Cruz County, Inc. Newsletter May 2012 Editor: Alan Brown, 388 Aptos Ridge Circle, Watsonville, CA Phone: (831) Web site: the course of the meeting. Welcome, David and Richard! Next Meeting Thursday, May 17th, 2012, at the EAA building, Aviation Way, Watsonville Airport, 7:30 PM. Treasurer s Report Beginning Balance $ Income Apparel Sale $30.00 Donations/Rebates $ Dues $ Subtotal $ Expenses Field Toilet Service $64.80 Field Expense Misc. $35.07 Field Expense Mowing $ Fun Fly Expenses $67.18 Newsletter Expenses 2011 $77.44 Office Expense Misc Subtotal $ Ending Balance $10, April Meeting The treasurer s report and minutes from the previous meeting were accepted unanimously. Old Business The new safety fence has now been installed at a material cost of $200. Dan Southwood brought in his stainless steel box, which will be used to house the field viewing camera. It really looks very good. Thank you, Dan. The meeting was called to order on April 19 th at 7:31 p.m. by Steve Boracca with fifteen members present. Two guests, David and Richard Tacklind, were welcomed. They both joined the club during Allen Ginzburg estimated that the weather station discussed the previous month would cost about $800. Although cheaper ones were available, Allen did not recommend them, based on his research.

The wind speed could be measured at any point in the RC Bees field as it would be a wireless connection. This notice is to let members know about the system cost, $800, as it will be voted on at the May meeting of the club. If you have strong feelings about it, please show up to participate. As an aside, why not show up anyway? If you re not a regular, you ll enjoy it! Steve Boracca commented further on the Day in the Sky program at Watsonville Airport to be held on Saturday, April 28 th. We will definitely participate in this deserving program to encourage young, and particularly special needs, people s interest in the aviation field. Our static area will be set up just inside the fence behind what was Zuniga s restaurant, and a flying area will be available adjacent to it. Parking will be available fairly close to the display area. We hope that a number of volunteers will man the RC Bees booth and/or do some small aircraft flying. Please get in touch with Steve if you can help. Memo to secretary: Please bring club flyers. (We had a great, well-supported day at the airport. Further details later in the newsletter). The Warbirds fun-fly was confirmed for the following Sunday, April 22 nd. And don t forget that there will be a floatplane fun-fly on Sunday, May 20 th. The Tacklind brothers brought along their Dare Designs 1909 Wright Flyer, kit-built, handlaunched, and flown several times. A great introduction from these fine modelers! Don Good showed his latest 1930 s racer, a Gilmore Red Lion from BH hobbies in Vietnam. It is powered by an OS 55AX turning a 13 x 5 Master Propeller, just marginally bigger than the cowling! However, as thrust goes as the square of the diameter, it should work out just fine. Benno brought along his Parrot model four-rotor helicopter his dad, Jay Friedland, is obviously calling 911 as he is being attacked! New Business Local Santa Cruzian Owen Brown donated a Sig Piper Cub kit and a flight box to the club, and the kit was bought by George Ribeiro for $50 a good deal both for George and the club. Show and Tell At that the meeting was adjourned. Warbirds Fun-Fly A highlight this month was our oft-postponed Warbirds Fun-Fly, held on Sunday, April 22 nd. Each airplane had to be static-judged. The static judging put Bob McReynolds T-28 in first place

with 28 points out of a possible 35, closely followed by Marcelo Montoreano s F4U Corsair and Bob s second entry, a TopFlite P-51, both with 27 points. The rest of the nine entries were further behind, with John Williams SE-5 at 23 points, Don Good s T-34 at 21 points, etc. Here s Bob s T-28 on the judges table. 51, with 38 points. Bob McReynolds T-28 scooped third place with 36 points, and Marcelo s F4U Corsair had a difficult take-off, but still managed fourth place with 35 points. Emmett White was not far behind with his T-28 with 33 points. The overall Grand Prize winner of a fine multicolored certificate was Don Good. Oh, and Bill Moore bought a donated Mel Avery helicopter and Owen Brown flight box. Lunch was excellent! Congratulations to all eight competitors! Day in the Sky And his P-51 together with John s SE-5. Below you see Stefan s Lockheed P-38. The performance requirements included take-off, horizontal figure eight, landing, and a maneuver of the pilot s choice. Here Don Good won with a total of 45 points out of a possible 50. Don had taken some time to study how a real T-34 flies, and so was very convincing. Mike Evans came second with an elaborate set of maneuvers appropriate to his P- This annual event for people, and especially children, with special needs, was held at Watsonville Airport on April 28th.Thanks to club president Steve Boracca s efforts, we had a very good site just behind the old Zuniga s restaurant for our static display, and were allocated a large adjacent space for park flying. Benno, in particular, Jacob, Allen Ginzburg, and Steve put on a great flying display which seemed to be well appreciated by the visitors. Two views of our static display and below with Ken Pahel and Dick Muir in the background of the second one.

Ken, Steve, Dick and Emmett White particularly spent a lot of time explaining the show to visitors, and even your editor got his two bits in discussing his Stealth Fighter model. We were given quite a large area in which to fly, and here Benno is being chased by his quadricopter! A special thank you is due to new member David Tacklind, who made a splendid banner for us (that s what he does professionally). Doesn t it look great! Double welcome to the club, David! Other views of the models on display. Bob McReynolds Piper Pawnee floatplane and John Williams Macchi flying boat are shown in close-up in the ensuing pictures.. Here are some of the miniature radio-controlled airplanes on the table. Average wingspan 15! So all in all, a great day for the visiting people, a great day for our club, and many thanks from our president and board to all the club members who participated. Floatplane Fun-Fly This will be held on the Sunday after our next club meeting, May 20 th. The main interest is in just watching our intrepid aviators getting their planes

off the water and back down again. But it will be combined with an element of competition on similar lines to the Warbird Fun-Fly. Points will be awarded for static appearance, take-offs, landings, horizontal figure eights and any special maneuver which the pilot wishes to perform. Our scrumptious luncheon will be served as usual! So come and join in! Down by the River Yes, we re still flying regularly down by the river, and here are a few proofs. Jacob flew Pat Jackson s Hangar Nine Sundowner powered by an Evolution 26 gas engine. A very speedy looking airplane. Don Good took some nice photos of the editor s Fieseler Storch and Lockheed ER-2. Johnny Skoch s Christen Eagle by Great Plains powered by an OS 55AX. He flies it very nicely. Richard Tacklind has scratch-built a Winglet. I understand it s very fast! And that does it for another month. Sorry I didn t get everyone s airplane into my allotted space. See you all - Down by the River!
