What qualifications does the College offer? The College of Surfing delivers a range of qualifications including Certificate II, Certificate III, or Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation, First Aid and more. 3 3 Study options: School based traineeships Part-time or Full time Flexible delivery (at home, online, block training at surf camps) Short courses (1/2 day to 4 weeks) Does the traineeship in surfing go towards my QCE points? Certificate III level traineeship in Outdoor Recreation provides up to 40% (8 of the 20) points required to obtain a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). The Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation can also been done outside of employment and still earn 7 QCE points. Employments opportunities include: Surf instructors Professional photographers and surftog Lifeguards Summer surfing camp leaders International surf camp instructors Surfing Guides on Surf Boats Surf school employees School-based traineeships allow young, enthusiastic students who are passionate about surfing the opportunity to work as an assistant, surf guide, or surfing instructors in local surfing, aquatic and adventure tourism business. Employers host trainees fo an average of 12 paid days every 3 months or possibly more. Success for students is inevitable with the help and support from the College of Surfing highly trainined instructors, schools, surf schools, employers and parents. Past students of the Surfing Traineeship have also been offered direct entry into university and have stayed on at the surf schools to be quality coaches for the holiday periods & weekends. Other trainees have gone on to study a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment to make a career of sharing what they have learnt at the College of Surfing. Some students have travelled around the world using their training. One student has used their qualification to gain entry into one of the world s most exclusive snowboarding instructor program in New Zealand. Others have taken their knowledge of risk assessment and training and used it to gain apprenticeships or to apply for the mining industry. Being at the Certificate III level the traineeship program is at the same level that tradies train to get their trade ticket. The qualification allows students to be registered with the National Outdoor Leaders Recognition Scheme as a Beginner to Intermediate Surfing Guide or Instructor. They may also apply to Academy of Surfing Instructors or Surfing Australia to receive mutual recognition / credit transfer.

4 4 About the Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation SIS30410 Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation is available and relevant to everyone from absolute beginners to experienced surfers. The qualification includes 24 units (12 core and 12 electives) that are tailored to assist the student in achieving quality skills and qualifications. This course is delivered in a tailored program that includes a high level of face-to-face learning; ensuring students develop and refine their techniques and skills to become professional guides and instructors. As with all of our programs there is flexibility with our delivery methods. Blended delivery is also available to allow students the option to complete training online and self-paced. To ensure all students have the highest skill development it is essential for training to be conducted in a variety of weather conditions. Where possible the theory is also taught in the outdoor environment to cater for the typical learner preferences and to implicitly teach skills and techniques to delivering quality educational session in an outdoor environment. Motivation is easy when a student is participating in activities they love and choose to be involved in. Below is a basic flow chart that shows the developmental stages for trainees of the Certificate III program. It also shows additional options that may be possible for students to include.

Some trainees have a weekly 2 hour training/meeting session after school; others use school flex time others do solely flexible study and attend the holiday block training camps that run from 2 days to 7 days at the end of each term. Below is a few sample time tables and calendar (more options available). Sample Student Timetable 1: Sample Student Timetable 2: Some trainees may be paid to do some study at work and they would also attend a week training block after each school term. Sample Traineeship Calendar showing block training sessions:

7 7 Students completing Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation may go on to study a Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation or a Diploma of Outdoor Recreation. Another pathway can include a TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and to become a trainer. The traditional Certificate III Surfing Traineeship embeds units from both Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation and Certificate IV in Training and Assessment so that graduates get a kick start to future studies. Apart from being able to study at a Diploma level within the network there are pathways into University studies. Past students of the Certificate III program have been accepted directly into Southern Cross University with additional career pathways for students to go on and study marine sciences at a bachelor level using credit from their certificate III course. Signing up a Trainee is 4 easy steps! 1. Apply for a traineeship with a local surf school/business. (The College of Surfing s pre traineeship, Ocean Careers Pathway Program can assist with finding the right employer) 2. Contact the team at the College of Surfing for a student kit which will include an enrolment form, student handbook and contact details for an Apprenticeship Centre (Busy at Work) to discuss any government traineeship matters. 3. Make an appointment with the School representative (usually an Industry Officer or VET Officer) to discuss the practicalities of the traineeship with the parents/guardians involved. 4. Contact the Apprenticeship Centre once you are satisfied that a traineeship is the right choice and arranges to sign the traineeship papers. This will require a meeting of the Trainee, Guardian/ Parent, Busy at Work and inform College of Surfing of the date and time. Once the training contract is signed the College of Surfing representative will negotiate the dates and electives of the training plan and give the resources so the trainee can start their training. What are the costs? The training costs are met by Government funding through the User Choice program. Students are expected to have access to appropriate equipment and PPE such as wetsuits, sunglasses, surfboards, leg ropes, wax etc. The optional end-of- term surfing camps and SCUBA diving training are invaluable to student learning and are highly recommended highlights of the training program. These activities do have additional costs for equipment hire, transport accommodation and food provisions. Additionally students can nominate to do substitute electives such as rock climbing, kayaking, and soon Kite Surfing, Slacklining and bush walking which also attract additional costs.

8 8 Business Partners and contacts of the College of Surfing include: A key to the College of Surfing s ongoing success since 2007 has been it s involvement in such a strong professional network. The network includes some of Australia s leading surf schools from both the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, Australia s leading body boarding business, and a network of government registered training organisations such as Ocean Recreation Careers Australasia (the Southern Hemisphere s largest marine based registered training organisation), Scuba Schools International Australasia, Paramount Adventure Centres, Academy of Career Training. Decades of combined experience allows the College of Surfing to support new emerging careers such as Kite Surfing Instructing, Slackline Instructing and whale and wild life guides.
