ADANCED LET'S BUILD THE 1 Assemble shock cord Elastic cord Locate both ends of the Kevlar Both ends of cord and one end of the elastic Kevlar cord cord. Tie the Kevlar and elastic cord together with a secure knot. Now stretch it out so it is one long assembly. Single end of Kevlar cord Completed shock cord assembly elastic cord 2 Assemble motor mount Apply Wood around inside edge of Motor Mount Tube as shown. Insert the Green Thrust Ring into the Motor Mount Tube so it is even with the top of the Motor Mount Tube. Now apply a of Wood around the Motor Mount Tube 1" from the rear end as shown. Slide one of the Centering Rings onto the Motor Mount Tube and into the of. 1" 3 Shock cord attachment Use a slip knot to tie the Kevlar end of the shock cord around the Motor Mount Tube above the attached Centering Ring. Slip the elastic end of the shock cord through the other Centering Ring, Now apply a of Wood around the Motor Mount Tube 1" from the top end as shown. Slide the other Centering Ring onto the Motor Mount Tube and into the of. Pass loose ends through loop 4 Motor mount insertion Thread the shock cord through the body tube. Apply Wood around the inside of the Body Tube as shown. Immediately insert the Motor Mount in the Body Tube and PUSH INTO THE BODY TUBE WITH ONE FAST & SMOOTH MOTION until it sticks out 1/4" from the rear of body tube as shown. High-Q Fin Marking guide Page 02 High-Q Fin Marking guide TAB
5 Mark fin lines on body tube Cut out the fin marking guide, wrap it around the motor mount end of the body tube and use it to mark the fin locations. Then use a straight edge or door frame to extend the lines 5" from the rear of the tube. Make a pencil mark 1 from the end of Body Tube along Fin Lines. ADANCED BUILDING THE QUEST HIGH-Q Set tube against door frame, then use the door frame edge to guide pencil to extend fin placement lines. 6 Create double glue joint How to make a "Double Joint" for extra fin strength Apply a small line of wood glue to the root edge of the fin. Attach it to the body tube in correct position. C. Remove the fin and wipe away any excess glue on the fin and the body tube so there is only a very thin layer of glue left. D. Wait until the glue is dry, then re-apply a new line of glue to the root edge of the fin and re-attach the fin. Press on Pull off 7 Attach three fins Using Wood, attach the fins one by one using the fin markings to align and place them. Make sure they are straight! 1 Place Fins 1 from the end of Body Tube. YES! Set fins so they are at 120 degree angles to one another. NO! 8 Add glue fillet to fins Run a of Wood along the length of the root edge of the fins to make a fillet. Use your finger to smooth the fillet and remove excess glue. 9 Attach launch lug to body tube Using Wood, attach the launch lug to the body tube 10" from the fin end, make sure it is straight and not aligned with a fin! 10" from motor end of body tube Launch lug clear for launch rod. Page 03
ADANCED 10 Attach nose cone to shock cord Thread the shock cord through the eyelet on the nose cone, and tie two overhand knot. 11 Attach parachute to nose cone Thread the shroud lines through the eyelet on the nose cone, then pass the parachute through them. 12 Sanding and finishing Apply a coat of Sanding Sealer to each Fin. When the Sealer is dry, lightly sand each Fin. Repeat the sanding and sealing until the surface of each Fin is smooth. C. Thoroughly dust the rocket so it is clean and ready for painting. 13 Painting the High-Q Place a rolled up newspaper in the Motor Mount to act as a handle to hold while painting the rocket. Spray the entire rocket with White Enamel Spray Paint. After the White Paint has thoroughly dried, use Masking Tape to mask off one of the fins. Then mask off the top 6 inches of the body tube. Spray the exposed surfaces of the rocket with Purple Enamel Spray Paint. C. After paint dries, leave Fin masked for next painting step. Page 04 Part No
ADANCED 14 Painting the High-Q New Masking Paint 1/3 of Tube Black, centered on one fin as shown here. Masked Fin from Step 13 After the Purple Paint has thoroughly dried, use Masking Tape to mask off another fin. Then mask off 2/3 of the body tube as shown, centering the exposed part on one fin. Spray the exposed surfaces of the rocket with Black Enamel Spray Paint. Mask off the shoulder of the Nose Cone with Masking Tape and newspaper. Mask off from this ridge. White Fin C. C. Spray the exposed surfaces of the Nose Cone with Silver Enamel Spray Paint. 15 Decal application The Decals in this kit are peel and stick, no wetting with water is required. To allow more versatility in the placement of the Decals, dip them in a shallow bowl of water with a drop of dish soap. The Decals can then be repositioned for a short time, then burnished down. D. E. C. Place the Decals in the appropriate positions shown. E. Three spaced evenly around Body Tube. C. D. Page 05
Determining the Center of Gravity Center of Gravity ADANCED FLYING YOUR HIGH-Q ROCKET BEFORE flying your High-Q, always check the center of gravity of the rocket by inserting the rocket motor you intend to use and finding the balance point (center of gravity). The rocket should balance at least 8 inches from the rear of the model with a motor installed. 8" from rear You can easily add nose weight by drilling a 1/4" hole into the base of the nose cone and inserting a 5/16" x 1.5" lag screw and 1.5" fender washer with a 5/16" hole as shown here. Flying your High-Q with a "D" size Motor You can fly the High-Q with D12-3 or D12-5 rocket motors. We recommend the Quest Launch Pad Prod. No with the below addition and the Quest Launch Controller Prod. No For wadding use Quest Wadding Prod. No "U" shaped stakes hammered into the ground over each launch pad leg. You will also need a Quest 24mm Adapter, Part No to fly with "D" motors. Note! Due to the size of the High-Q, it is recommended that a wire clothes hanger be cut into 3 "U" shaped stakes and hammered into the ground over each launch pad leg. Flying your High-Q with "E" and "F" size Motors NOTICE: DO NOT LAUNCH YOUR HIGH-Q from a Quest Prod. No launch Pad if flying any rocket motor larger than a D12. Use the Aerotech Mantis Launch Pad Prod. No and the Interlock Launch Controller Prod. No Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation and use of rocket motor. Page 06 Part No B
Prepping the Rocket for Flight ADANCED FLYING YOUR HIGH-Q ROCKET Grab the parachute at it's center and pull the shroud lines taut so that the parachute is in a long narrow triangle shape. Fold the parachute in thirds lengthwise, and DO NOT wrap the shroud lines around the parachute. See the illustration to the right for clarification. TIP: Lightly dust the parachute with Talcum or Baby Powder to keep it from sticking together. This works well in hot and humid or very cold weather. C. Place 5 sheets of loosely crumpled wadding inside the body tube. D. Pack the Parachute and Shock Cord, then replace Nose Cone C. 5 sheets of loosely crumpled wadding D. Pack the Parachute and Shock Cord, then replace Nose Cone Prepping Rocket Motors Follow the Rocket Motor manufacturer's instructions on using rocket motors. Use the appropriate launch pad and launch controller for the motor you are using (described on Page 6). Be sure the model is balanced properly as described on Page 6. READ AND FOLLOW THE N.R. SAFETY CODE DURING ALL YOUR MODEL ROCKET ACTIITIES. READ AND FOLLOW THE ENCLOSED LAUNCHING PROCEDURES SHEET. Manufactured by: Quest Aerospace, Inc.
