2 Bronze Star & Basic First Aid CPR A Bronze Star Bronze Star is the pre-bronze Medallion training standard and it is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion. Participants develop problem-solving skills individually and in partners. They learn how to keep a cool head and take charge in an emergency. Includes a 400 metre timed swim. Basic First Aid- CPR A This course gives students basic knowledge of first aid techniques that will assist in their rescues as well as every day minor scenarios. The focus is on remaining calm and acting quickly in first aid emergencies. Students will learn rescue breathing techniques as well as choking rescues as well as CPR skills. As personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for use and evaluated in both programs, a key chain face shield and gloves has been included in the course cost and will be issued to each candidate on the first class. 3 Bronze Medallion & Emergency First Aid-CPR B Bronze Medallion This course offers an understanding of lifesaving principles contained in the 4 components of water-rescue education: judgment, fitness, knowledge and skill. Rescuers learn tows and carries, and defense methods and releases in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. Emergency First Aid-CPR B This course gives students general knowledge of first aid principles to increase confidence in order to effectively manage an emergency, without panic or confusion. The focus is on providing first aid for common injuries and core skills to reduce shock. In addition, the students learn to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies that occur in adults, children and infants. As personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for use and evaluated in both programs a CPR mask and gloves has been included in the course cost and will be issued to each candidate on the first class along with their required text, The Canadian Lifesaving Manual. 4 Bronze Cross & Standard First Aid-CPR C Bronze Cross Bronze Cross is the next level in the lifesaving chain. This course will bring you one step closer to becoming a certified Instructor and/or Lifeguard. Bronze Cross builds upon the foundation established in Bronze Medallion and teaches more complex and advanced lifesaving skills, for example the difference between a lifesaver and lifeguard is outlined and deep water spinal injury management. Standard First Aid-CPR C This course provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. Standard First Aid incorporates all of the Emergency First Aid content and is designed for those who require a more in-depth understanding of first aid including: legal implications of first aid treatment, spinal injuries, heat or cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal and chest injuries, burns and medical emergencies. It provides knowledge of how the heart works and what goes wrong when defibrillation is required. Candidates will learn when and how to operate a public access defibrillator. Prerequisites: Bronze Medallion AND Emergency First Aid-CPR B Required Materials: The Canadian Lifesaving Manual, CPR mask, gloves (If a candidate does not have any of the above items, they can be purchased from Zodiac at time of registration) Course Cost: $395 incl. Candidates are required to perform to Bronze Cross standards in a practical examination. Candidates must complete the 600m swim in 18 minutes or less and perform the required skills and rescues. 5 Distinction The Distinction Award encourages a maturity of response to demanding aquatic emergency situations and is designed to develop advanced water rescue skill and knowledge, and an understanding of the principles of fitness training. Distinction challenges include implications of assuming responsibility in an emergency, how to deal with two victims at once, and rescue of a non-breathing spinal-injured victim. Inherent in the name of the award lifesavers must perform every item with distinction. This award is an effective way to build new skills and maintain your swim fitness level while waiting to take your National Lifeguard course. Prerequisites: Bronze Cross Required Materials: The Canadian Lifesaving Manual, CPR mask, gloves (If a candidate does not have any of the above items, they can be purchased from Zodiac at time of registration) Candidates will be required to bring a clean long-sleeve shirt, pants and shoes that will be worn into the pool to complete specific course components. 6 National Lifeguard The Lifesaving Society s National Lifeguard certification is Canada s professional lifeguard standard. The updated National Lifeguard curriculum is grounded in important lifeguard competencies judgment, knowledge, skill, fitness and will include the following Physical Standards: Item 2a Object recovery Demonstrate anaerobic fitness and strength for an object recovery: Starting in the water, swim 15m and surface dive to recover a 20 lb object; surface and carry the object 5 m all within 40 sec; Item 2b Underwater Swim Demonstrate anaerobic fitness and skill for an underwater swim: Starting in the water, submerge and swim 15 m underwater; Item 2c Sprint challenge Demonstrate anaerobic fitness: Starting in the water, swim 50 m head-up within 60 sec; Item 2d Rescue drill Demonstrate endurance and strength for a submerged manikin or victim recovery and rescue: Starting in the water, swim to recover a submerged manikin or victim located 25 m away; carry the manikin or victim 25 m all within 90 seconds ; Item 2e Endurance challenge Demonstrate aerobic fitness and endurance: Swim 400 m within 10 min.; Item 2f Approach & carry Demonstrate endurance and strength for a distressed victim rescue: Starting in the water, approach 15 m head-up to contact a distressed victim in deep water; carry the victim 5 m supporting the victim s head and shoulders above the surface. As a whistle and basic first aid kit are required for use and evaluated in NLS they have both been included in the course cost and will be issued to each candidate on the first class along with their required text, the Alert Manual. 7 National Lifeguard (NLS) Recertification The Lifesaving Society s National Lifeguard certification is Canada s professional lifeguard standard. The purpose of an NLS Recert is to reconfirm that National Lifeguards can perform at the NLS standard. 8 Assistant Instructor Through classroom learning and in-water practice, the Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor course prepares candidates to help instructors with swimming and lifesaving classes. Candidates are introduced to key principles of learning and teaching while they master basic progressions. The roles and responsibilities of instructors and assistants are emphasized. As a workbook is required for use in the Assistant Instructor Course, the book has been included in the course cost and will be issued to each candidate at the first class. A whistle will also be provided to each candidate. The course stresses the responsibility undertaken by these group leaders for safeguarding the young people in their care even when under lifeguard supervision. Safeguard focuses on water safety awareness, accident prevention and the principles of aquatic safety supervision. Safeguard teaches participants how to identify hazards and at-risk behaviours, how to recognize potential victims, and how to respond safely in an aquatic emergency. Safeguard training is designed for swimmers and non-swimmers alike. Successful completion of the course is based on active participation in all sessions and evidence of the Must Sees in each item. Prerequisites: Guardians must be at least 12 years of age AND able to swim comfortably in deep water. Candidates participate in both classroom and water sessions developing skills in the areas of class management, planning, evaluation, leadership, communication and administration. Current Swim Instructors teach and certify candidates in all levels of the Zodiac Swim for Life program. As Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor award guides and resources are required for use in the Swim Instructor Course, the books and strokes and skills USB have been included in the course cost and will be issued to each candidate on the first class. Instructors will learn how to perform and teach skills such as flip turns, starts from blocks, victim rescues, throwing accuracy and rope coiling in a fun and competitive way. As the Coaching Lifesaving and Lifesaving Sport Fundamentals Award Guide are required for the Lifesaving Sport Coach Level 1 Course, the books have been included in the course cost and will be issued to candidates on the first day. 11 Zodiac Swim Instructor Update Clinic The Swim Instructor Update Clinic teaches current experienced instructors of learn-to-swim programs how to deliver the Zodiac Swimmer program. It teaches candidates how to apply their existing knowledge and skills to this program. Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to perform all of the current LSS Swim for Life stroke standards, skill and swim-to-survive items. Candidates are evaluated through this practical performance. As the Zodiac Swim award guide is required for use in the Zodiac Swim Instructor Update Clinic, the book has been included in the course cost and will be issued to each candidate on the course date. Prerequisites: National Lifeguard certification and a minimum of 100 hours of experience as a lifeguard OR National Lifesaving Examiner OR Aquatic Supervisor OR Aquatic Management certifications (need not be current). 12 Examiner Standards Clinic & Advanced Instructor Examiner Standards Clinic The Lifesaving Society appoints examiners to evaluate and certify candidates in the Society's training programs. Examiners are experienced instructors who undergo specific training in examination standards and apprenticeship with experienced examiners. With the approval of the Society's Area Chair, experienced instructors may be appointed as an examiner after they have met all of the criteria. Advanced Instructors The Advanced Instructor course provides additional training for instructors who wish to teach the advanced awards such as National Lifeguard, Standard First Aid and Boat Operator Accredited Training. The course covers: principles of planning; teaching adults; methods of presentation; how to use audiovisual aids; running a course including evaluation procedures and guidelines for apprentices. This clinic is the initial step in obtaining Lifesaving Society examiner status. Lifesaving Society instructors who wish to apply for an Examiner appointment must attend. The Examination Standards Clinic (ESC) focuses on the evaluation of the Bronze medal awards and Emergency First Aid. The clinic has both class room and in-water components throughout the course. Upon completion of this clinic Examiner candidates co-examine with experienced Examiners at the levels to which they seek Examiner appointment. The number of successful co-examinations required is at the discretion of the Area Chair. A minimum of 2 is common. The Examiner candidate must submit their successfully completed application for examiner appointment to the relevant Area Chair for consideration. Prerequisites: Lifesaving Instructor certification AND 18 years of age Expected: 2 years experience instructing at Bronze level or experience deemed equivalent by the Area Chair Required Materials: Canadian Lifesaving Manual, Bronze Medals Award Guide Course Cost: $100 incl. HST Sunday April 8 th 11 am 8 pm Aquatic Supervisor Training For deck-level supervisory staff, the Aquatic Supervisor course provides the knowledge and skills, lifeguarding and instructing, to manage a safe aquatic environment. Candidates will be introduced the responsibilities required to act as an Aquatic Supervisor understanding that safety is the supervisors key responsibility and function. As the Aquatic Supervisor workbook is required for the Aquatic Supervisor Training course, the cost has be included in the cost of the course and will be issued to candidates on the first day. Prerequisites: National Lifeguard OR Swim Instructor OR Lifesaving Instructor certification; AND 100 hours of experience as a lifeguard and/or instructor. 13 IMPORTANT PRE-COURSE INFORMATION! Pre-course Assignment: The courses below require the completion of a pre-course assignment. Candidates will need to arrange for pick-up or delivery of the course materials two weeks prior to the first class to allow for completion of the assignment. National Lifeguard Instructor This course is designed to provide candidates with an understanding of the expectations and requirements to teach the National Lifeguard program. The class room and pool sessions allow participants to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, teaching and evaluation skills. The National Lifeguard Instructor course provides candidates with an understanding of the principles and practices on which the National Lifeguard program is based. The course explores teaching approaches and techniques appropriate for National Lifeguard candidates. Upon successful completion of this course candidates will be certified NL Instructors. NL Instructors must then co-teach/examine with an experienced NL Instructor to achieve NL Examiner appointment. The number of successful co-teaches/examinations required is at the discretion of the Area Chair. A minimum of 1 co-exam is required. The NL Examiner candidate must submit their successfully completed application for NL examiner appointment to the relevant Area Chair for consideration. As Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard award guide and resources as well as a copy of the Guide to Ontario Public Pools Regulations are required for use in the National Lifeguard Instructor Course, the books and instructor CD has been included in the course cost and will be issued to each candidate at the first class. HST January 4 th 6 th Thursday 1:30pm-6:00pm Friday & Saturday 10am-5pm National Lifeguard & Standard First Aid Instructor This course is designed to provide candidates with an understanding of the expectations and requirements to teach and deliver the Standard First Aid and National Lifeguard programs. The class room and pool sessions allow participants to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, teaching and evaluation skills. Upon successful completion of this course candidates will be certified NL and SFA Instructors. NL & SFA Instructors must then coteach/examine with an experienced NL or SFA Instructor to achieve NL or SFA Examiner appointment. Prerequisites: National Lifeguard, Advanced Instructor, Lifesaving Instructor certification AND 18 years of age, Standard First Aid, Lifesaving Instructor OR Core Instructor Clinic. 14 Lifesaving Instructor Trainer Course Lifesaving Society Instructor Trainers (ITs) teach, evaluate and certify Instructor candidates. ITs are experienced and knowledgeable Instructor-Examiners who participate in the Lifesaving Society Instructor Trainer clinic in preparation for apprenticeship as an Instructor Trainer. With apprenticeship experience and the recommendation of an experienced Instructor Trainer, the Society may appoint you as an Instructor Trainer. The process by which you become an Instructor Trainer is the same no matter which specialty stream you are interested in. Upon completion of this clinic candidates will move on to the apprenticeship stage of the IT process. Candidates will seek out an opportunity to apprentice with an experienced Instructor Trainer on at least one instructor course in each of the specialty areas for which they wish to seek certification. For example: Lifesaving Instructor Trainers apprentice on a Lifesaving Instructor course; Swim Instructor Trainers apprentice on a Swim Instructor course, First Aid Instructor Trainers apprentice on a First Aid Instructor course, etc. A positive recommendation from a current Instructor Trainer is required to complete the apprenticeship stage. After successful completion of the apprenticeship stage, submit your completed Instructor Trainer Training Record with the certification fee directly to the Society's office for approval. As Lifesaving Society Instructor Trainer award guides and resources are required for use in the Lifesaving Instructor Trainer Clinic Course, the Swim and Lifesaving Instructor book has been included in the course cost. The candidate will also have a choice of either the Assistant Instructor or Examiner Award Guide at the time of registration that will also be included and will be issued to each candidate at the first class. Prerequisites: Bronze Examiner OR First Aid Examiner OR National Lifeguard Examiner, or; experienced Swim Instructor (100 hours of experience teaching Swim for Life), Official Instructor, Lifesaving Sport Coach.
