1 McLean Swim & Dive Season Information Introduction Swim and Dive is ONLY a VARSITY sport at McLean High School. Due to time and facilities constraints, we are unable to have JV or Freshmen teams. As practice space and time is limited, team membership will be limited as well (see below). As only four divers maximum (per gender) may compete in any given meet, the Dive Team membership may be limited. Qualifying Standards for Season Standards for this season are based on National Age Group Motivational Times ( A & BB Minimums, year olds). Time Trials will be conducted during the first week of practice (Monday, November 05 - Thursday, November 8, 2018). Any swimmer with 2 (1 free and 1 non-free) swims that make a qualifying standard will be guaranteed a roster spot. If the full roster of boys/girls is not filled by those with 2 standards, additional swimmers will be added by coaching staff members. Coaches will be base their decisions on time-trial performances and the needs of the team. ALL swimmers are required to participate in at least one day of trials to earn a spot on the team. 2 Practices Practice will be held Monday through Thursday throughout the regular competition season from Monday, November 12, 2018 through Thursday, January 17, 2019 except on certain school holidays. Following the last dual meet of the season, only those swimmers and divers named to the conference team will continuing practice. Every practice is at Spring Hill Rec Center. There will be a one-way bus transporting athletes from McLean to Spring Hill for practice each afternoon. It will leave from the Rock Entrance. You are responsible for finding your own way home from Spring Hill at the conclusion of your practice. Swim Practice: Dive Practice: Monday - Thursday 3:30-4:30 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 4:30 5:45 pm Wednesday NO DIVE PRACTICE Swimmers and divers who participate in club swimming/diving programs are required (by district as well as team rules) to participate in at least one high school training practice per week to remain eligible for competition in the meet at the end of that calendar week. The chart below clearly defines the required number of high school practices one must attend in relation to the number of swim/dive club practices. Note that swimmers and divers who do not participate in club swimming/diving during the high school season are required to attend all regularly scheduled high school practices. Off-season training for other sports, tutoring sessions, music lessons, etc. should not be scheduled during varsity swim practice and cannot / will not be substituted as club practice as they are not substitutes for time in the water or on the boards. Excessive absences may result in failure to letter or dismissal from the team. 2

3 Meets Swimmers will be entered in each meet in events chosen by the coaching staff. Like all other varsity sports at McLean, we practice, travel, and compete as a team because we are a team. All swimmers and divers are required to ride the team bus to and from ALL dual meets (including those at Spring Hill) and should be at school at least fifteen minutes prior to the stated bus departure time for each meet. If alternate transportation needs arise, athletes must notify Coach Drake prior to the day of the meet (in writing) and receive specific permission to either arrive at the meet, or depart from the meet by some other means. Regular Season Meets: 11/30/18 Yorktown 12/07/18 West Potomac 12/14/18 Langley 12/21/18 South Lakes 1/4/19 West Springfield (Student Winter Break) 1/11/19 Herndon 1/18/19 Washington-Lee Post Season: Liberty District Championships are scheduled for 1/23-1/26. Swimmers selected for the conference team are required to be available to attend both days of competition. Regional Championships: Dates TBD. State Championships scheduled for Feb 14 Oak Marr and Feb 15 GMU. Team members qualifying for District, Regional, and/or State Championship meets are required to travel to and from the meets as a team, with modifications to this rule as needed. Communication All swimmers and divers are required to communicate all absences and conflicts with practices and meets in a timely manner to the coaching staff. Communication via is not only available, but is encouraged. s will be sent out regularly updating athletes and parents with pertinent information. 3

4 Academics Team Policies You are responsible for any classroom assignments missed because of swim & dive team involvement Coaching staff reserves the right to check on student academic performance at any point in the season and withhold student from competition if necessary to ensure academic success. Unexcused tardiness or absences may result in temporary or permanent suspension from the team. Behavior You are expected to behave appropriately, honorably, and in a mature manner as a McLean HS Swim & Dive member at all times, in and out of the swimming pool If a student is found to be in violation of any policies in the SR&R while engaged in a swim & dive team activity or engaged in any other activity on FCPS property, they may be removed from the team and face further consequences from the school Respect the rules, staff, and property of all facilities we compete and practice in Be honest with coaches and teammates Good sportsmanship will be expected at all times Be supportive and loyal to your teammates No profane or abusive and/or inappropriate language No hazing of any type Practice General Practice Requirement: You must attend all practices in a week to be allowed to swim in a weekly scheduled meet. o If you have to miss practice, leave practice early, or arrive late to practice, you must notify a coach before practice starts. o Not notifying a coach may result in being unable to swim in a weekly scheduled meet. Be on time o We have an hour in the water and we want to make the most of our time. Please be ready to get in the water at the start of practice at 3:30. o If you arrive late to practice without an pre-excused reason, you may forfeit your ability to swim in a future swim meet 4

5 Meets To be eligible to compete in a scheduled swim meet you are required to: o Attend full day of school on the day of the meet (unless it is on a Saturday) o fulfill the practice requirements Missing meets may result in failure to letter and/or in a dismissal from the team. ATHLETES must contact Coach Drake at least 3 days in advance VIA to request permission to miss a meet; not doing so may result in a forfeiture of swimming in a future meet and/or dismissal from the team. Any athlete who is not eligible to swim in a meet will still attend as a team member and be supportive of their peers. Transportation Proper behavior is expected on the bus at all times Everyone is expected to travel to and from meets on the bus Students who drive themselves to practice must have a completed Driver s Insurance Form (see Coach Drake for this form). Students who are receiving rides with other students/or are driving other students must have a completed student driver/passenger form (see Coach Drake for this form) Health/Injuries/Trainer If injured, please make sure that a coach knows immediately. Consult with an MHS Athletic trainer to work out practice and competition plan. Lettering Letters will be given out based on the following: Attendance o Participating in practices, dual meets and districts. o Athletes named to the district (conference) team who do not participate in the meet will NOT receive a letter. Performance o Throughout the regular season meets, the athlete earns at least ten (10) points for the team. Only points earned from individual swims will count. o Showing improvement over the course of the year Attitude o Listening to all coaches o Displaying good sportsmanship o Supporting teammates Coaches reserve the right to use their discretion regarding certain situations 5

6 Paperwork & Forms Below is a list of forms required by both the school and the coaching staff prior to participation in swim and dive tryouts. All forms listed below MUST be completed and submitted by Thursday, November 1, Return to Activities Office (excluding managers): Physical Form if you participated in a fall sport, your physical is on file and you do not need another. If you do not have a physical on file, you must get a physical to participate. Physicals dated May 1, 2018 or later are acceptable for this school year. As physicals take time to schedule, CALL NOW. Make sure all four pages of the form are completed and signed by YOU, your PHYSICIAN, and a PARENT. DO NOT use any other physical form. Athlete Concussion Education if you participated in a fall sport, you do not need to complete again. It can be found at Parent Concussion Education It can be found at Return to Coaching Staff (including managers): Return to Room B155 Emergency Care Form although you filled out this form at the start of the year for the office, you must fill out an additional copy for me. MSD Team Policies page 7 of this packet. Signed by athlete and at least 1 parent. FCPS Activities Participation Form Completed and signed by athlete and parent. Student Driver Insurance Verification If athlete will be driving to and/or from practice, this form must be completed. Student Driver & Rider From If athletes will be riding with other athletes in personal vehicles to practice, both the driver AND rider(s) must complete this form. **Failure to submit completed forms by the due date will prohibit you from participating in tryouts and thus eliminate the possibility of membership on the Swim and Dive Team for the season. 6
