COACHING: Head Coach Vivienne Kennedy has over 23 years coaching experience and has completed Silver Licence training with ASCTA. Vivienne is currently Head Coach with the School Sport Victoria swimming team and has coached numerous All Junior, Vic Country and State champions. All coaching assistants operate under the mentorship/guidance of our Head Coach. Currently several of our senior swimmers assist with coaching junior sessions in conjunction with our Head Coach. We are committed to developing each swimmer to the best of their ability with a strong focus on correct technique. We ensure each child achieves success by focussing on personal development. SWIMMING SQUADS: Our squads cater for beginners through to State/National level. New swimmers to the club are assessed during their FREE trial sessions and placed in a squad to suit their ability and desire to progress. Club swimmers train a minimum of 2 sessions per week. Sessions must be nominated as we restrict numbers at each session to ensure swimmers get adequate attention and development. Available sessions are dependent on which squad your swimmer is allocated to, so actual days & times will be advised after your trial period.

Fees incorporate a club levy to cover lane hire at all training facilities and pool entry at privately owned pools. In addition, swimmers need to pay pool entry when training at Council owned pools (Kardinia Outdoor and Leisurelink). Fees are averaged over the year so each term is the same. Families will be invoiced prior to the start of each term and will have 2 weeks to pay fees. Your swimmer/s sessions will be listed at the bottom of your invoice and this will be your opportunity to request any changes. If your sessions are unchanged you can simply pay the invoice as the listed sessions are confirmed unless you advise otherwise.

4 Swimmers train during the school term, with the exception of a 4-week rest period at the conclusion of the Long Course (LC) season. This rest period incorporates the Easter holidays. This is an important break for our swimmers who train and race hard during competition season. A break at this time of the year is vital for swimmer rest/recovery and directly benefits them in the short course season. In addition to that, our Head Coach has one week away to coach the Victorian Schools Team at School National Championships (dates vary but is usually in term 3 or 4). The club has a one week break at this time but endeavours to maintain training sessions for Country and above qualified swimmers during this period. All holiday training is optional; however, Country qualified swimmers are strongly encouraged to attend. Holiday training is provided free of charge although swimmers must pay their own pool entry each day. Holiday training takes place during all school holidays except Easter. No of Sessions CURRENT FEES from 1 st Jan st Child 2 nd 3rd Beginner Sharks Squad (2 sessions) $150 $150 $150 Junior/Senior Squad (3 Sessions) Country Squad (4 sessions) Country/State/National (5 or more Sessions) th child and additional children $120 flat fee WHERE DO THE SHARKS TRAIN? Over the Short Course winter season we have sessions at Geelong College Senior School pool, Newtown and Christian College Middle School pool, Highton. During the Long Course summer season we also train at Kardinia Outdoor Pool, South Geelong. Holiday training is usually based at Leisurelink, Waurn Ponds in July and September and Kardinia Outdoor Pool in December/January. TRAINING EQUIPMENT: What equipment does my swimmer need? Junior & Beginner squads Cap Goggles Fins Kickboard Mesh bag Seniors squad All of the above Pull buoy Bronze, Silver and Gold squads All of the above

5 Hand paddles (Finis brand, strapless preferred) Pull band (can be purchased or use a strip of tyre inner tube). UNIFORM: The Sharks committee of management have carefully selected uniform items that are both functional and attractive. Wearing the uniform means we are easily identifiable as a club at competitions and creates a sense of belonging. Uniform must be worn at all competitions. All new swimmers pay a compulsory $50 levy as part of their initial registration fee which covers the cost of a club polo shirt and swim cap. Further uniform items are optional (please see the uniform order form in this booklet) A copy of the order form can also be found on Team App under Documents and also on our Geelong Sharks website. Competition: The swimming year is divided into two seasons; Long Course (LC) and Short Course (SC). Long Course runs from mid-september until April with meets held in a 50m pool and Short Course runs from May to September with meets held in a 25m pool. At the end of each season swimmers can compete in the Victorian Country Championships and the State Age Championships if they have swum the qualifying times at designated qualifying meets throughout that season. Other major events for the Long Course season are the All Junior Trials, All Junior Finals and the BSWSA District Championships. Qualifying times for championship events can be found on the SV website. Our club also runs two events each year; the City by the Bay Sprints a Long Course event held in November at Kardinia Outdoor Pool, and the SC Winter Trophy Meet held in June at Geelong College. These are both major fundraising events for our club and we encourage all swimmers to enter. Our club also hosts time trials 3 times per year, these events are only for club members and points achieved go towards awards presented at our club Presentation evening. Encouragement meets are hosted by various clubs and are a good opportunity for junior and beginner swimmers to enjoy the fun of racing and to familiarise themselves with the competition processes. Swimmers have the opportunity to nominate for the BSWSA District Teams competing in the 8-12 Optus Junior Dolphins Competition in November and the Inter-District Competition in February. Both competitions are held at MSAC and the teams are comprised of swimmers from across the Barwon South West district. There are a limited number of places on the teams and successful applicants are selected by the BSWSA based on their fastest times recorded in the national database. Which competitions should my swimmer enter? A calendar of events will be suggested by our Head Coach and should be adhered to. Competitions to be entered are selected around the swimmers training work load and are scheduled to help swimmers achieve their best results. Entering additional meets and over racing your swimmer means they will miss out on important racing feedback from their coach and can be counter-productive in achieving results. How to enter competitions: Our Head Coach publishes a list of competitions and it is important to take note of entry closing dates and whether qualifying times apply. To enter a competition go to the Swimming Victoria calendar of events which can be found

6 Scroll through the events until you find the listing for the event you wish to enter. Click on the event listing and you will be taken to a page displaying specific information for that event eg the location, event flyer and enter here. For higher level events such as Country Championships you will be able to view more detailed information including qualifying times. Select Enter Here and you will be taken to the entry page, then click on Enter At the log in screen enter your username and password. If you are unsure what this is please contact our Registrar Emy Simsic at jces01@gmail.com Once logged in click on Book On Meet On the next page read and accept the terms and conditions then click on Proceed Select the events you wish to enter by clicking yes in the drop down menu next to each event then click Proceed

7 From here you will be directed to a page displaying the total meet entry fees and you will be prompted to enter your credit card details. Credit card details can be stored in the system for faster check out on future entries. Club Records: Our Registrar keeps account of all club records and these are published in the Standings section of TeamApp. Records can only be achieved during the long course season in a 50m pool at designated qualifying meets, except for the 100m IM which is run during the short course season in a 25m pool. Presentation Evening and AGM: Presentation evening is an annual event that takes place at the conclusion of the LC season and directly follows the club AGM (usually end of May/early June). Various trophies and awards are handed out in recognition of the swimmer s achievements. Every swimmer will be presented with a certificate. All swimmers are strongly encouraged to attend. Officials Qualifications: Parents can complete a simple online module called General Principles of Officiating before going on to complete an official s workshop. Workshops are friendly, collaborative and designed to educate. There is no test. You can start with time-keeping or marshalling and later go on to other positions if you wish. Being able to effectively assist at carnivals is a great way to let your swimmer/s know that you support them. Further information can be found on the SV website Australian Sports Commission Online Training Modules: Parents & Older swimmers can access this great online learning site (just register and you are ready to go). These are educational modules which can be completed by anyone and are applicable across all sports. The assessment is multiple choice questions. Unlike most tests you can have as many goes as you need to get 100% and then you can print the certificate. This is a great for teenagers to have in their resume especially when applying for part time jobs, scholarships and so forth. There are some great Sports Psychology modules so all 15+ swimmers should consider doing some of these. Some of the modules include: - Community Coaching General Principles Community Officiating General Principles (do this before becoming an SV official as this is needed before you can be qualified) Goal Setting Competition Routines High Performance Mental Skills There are also several Play By The Rules Modules including: - Child Protection

8 Harassment & Discrimination Member Protection Information Officer Training Introduction to the Integrity of Sport PARENT & SWIMMER RESPONSIBILITIES How do we become part of the club these suggestions will help you feel prepared! Keep up to date with all notices: Parents/Swimmers need to download the TeamApp app or login from the TeamApp website. Check TeamApp regularly as all updates are posted there. The main sections to check are NEWS, NEWSLETTERS, DOCUMENTS and various CHAT groups including COMPETITION & TRAINING. It is important to ensure you have TURNED ON the NOTIFICATIONS for each section of TeamApp otherwise you may miss information when it is posted. Please make sure the club has your up to date address so that you receive periodic notices. Attend club gatherings and swimmer meetings and check for updates on Team App for anything you can help with ALWAYS give positive feedback to your swimmers. Coaches need to give constructive criticism and referees sometimes have to deliver bad news so you need to let your swimmer know you think they are fantastic (because they are!). Help with and attend club functions, fundraising and other activities We are a club run by volunteers. Undertake an official s qualification such as time keeping. They are round table discussions rather than exams. We endeavour to run training sessions in groups, please let your coach or committee member know you want to do a workshop and this can be arranged. You also need to do the Introduction to Officiating on-line module (information provided earlier in this booklet). Encourage swimmers to arrive for training and competitions on time. Ensure swimmers have everything they need in their bags including a FULL drink bottle. If a child is coming straight from school to training ensure they have an extra after school snack in their bags plus an extra after training snack. If it is hard to give swimmers a full drink bottle then an empty bottle in their bag can always be filled with cool water at the pool. Parents are always welcome to watch sessions from the sidelines but coaching your child during a session is NOT allowed. This disrupts the group and does not allow your child and others in the group to concentrate on improving their swimming. ALWAYS support coaches and officials in front of your child. If you have any issues to discuss that swimmers should not hear please make an appointment to see the coach privately. If necessary issues can be raised with the President, Dispute Resolutions Officer or club committee. Familiarise yourself with the online entry procedure and requirements for swim meets. Ensure you get your swimmers entries in on time. Use the National Results database to look up your child s best times. These will be automatically imported into meet files when you enter online. Remember that short course times and long course times will be different, SC times are usually quicker! Assist with jobs at meets this includes both home and away meets. This can include time-keeping, marshalling, check starting or helping with raffle sales, or providing refreshments for officials. For our meets we also need to set up the pool before the meet and pack up afterwards, along with other roles so your help will be very welcome. We all want meets to be a successful day for the

9 swimmers. Your children like to see you helping it makes them believe their swimming is important to you. The benefits of this are huge! Swimmers sit as a group (team) at meets near the coach so that they can support each other and are easy to find when it is time for their events. Parents are most welcome to sit with the team but if you are sitting elsewhere please allow your child to experience being part of the team by being with the group. If you are working, or sitting elsewhere swimmers can come to see you after each race. Swimmers must see the coach immediately before and after each race for last minute instructions and feedback on their swim. Pay your fees on time at the start of each term. Swimmers can be excluded if fees are not paid within two weeks. The coach prefers to concentrate on coaching swimmers rather than collecting fees. See Vivienne if you are having difficulty with payment. COACH RESPONSIBILITIES: To help parents understand what a coach does, we have prepared the following outline of their responsibilities. Qualifications: Our Head Coach and any coaching assistants have appropriate coaching and/or teaching qualifications. Assistants with Swim Teacher qualifications always work under the direction of an appropriately qualified coach. Coaches must be insured and registered with the Australian Swimming Coaches and Teachers Association. To hold and maintain any of these registrations they must have a current CPR certificate and undertake regular professional development activities. Coaches must also have a police check and hold a current Working with Children Check (WWCC), and the Head Coach must have completed the Safe Sport Framework modules aimed at ensuring a safe environment for our children. Training Session Plans: Coaches plan each session ahead of time. It is an ongoing process with sessions being developed constantly to best meet the needs of each group, and each individual in the group over time. Swimmers develop at different rates and have different abilities these are taken into account when planning sessions. Sometimes sessions are changed between planning and training a program is constantly reviewed to ensure swimmers are being developed appropriately. Although swimmers may be in the same session they will be working at different levels (which could be stroke based, distance based eg 25M, 50M, 100M repeats or time based number of repeats and time interval for each). Plans begin with an annual plan and then several more stages occur before the final session by session detailed plans are prepared. Conducting Sessions: Training groups are constantly monitored to ensure swimmers are working at the appropriate level to achieve the desired training outcomes. This includes visual monitoring, giving feedback, timing efforts, taking stroke counts and rates, monitoring heart rates, teaching skills and drills and educating swimmers on the purpose of each drill and how it can help improve their stroke, teaching and improving race skills such as starts, turns and finishes, keeping records of swimmers as well as ensuring swimmers have appropriate rest and drinks. The coach sometimes moves away from direct poolside to monitor swimmers unobtrusively it is sometimes amazing how stroke faults become more apparent when swimmers think they are not being watched! Swimmers are taught to work off the pace clock and gradually learn to work at the appropriate level of effort. Swimming is a highly disciplined sport and swimmers gain an enormous amount of personal growth from being an active member of a swimming club. Swim Meets: The coach spends a lot of time watching and timing swimmers at meets. However, unlike a parent watching their child, coaches are observing lots of things. These include execution of starts, turns and finishes, taking splits of various parts of a race, observing stroke rate, head and body position, kick rate and timing of various strokes. This information is part of the information gathering that goes into the continued development of swimmers. Often where the swimmer finishes in the race is the last thing coaches notice! Coaches note what swimmers need to work on, what is

10 good and what skills need more work often identifying things that need to be fixed in order to prevent future disqualifications or improve times. If a swimmer is disqualified the coach often knows what for even without asking the referees (coaches see a lot more than referees as their whole coaching time is spent in close observation of swimmers and so they know what to look for in each of their swimmers!). Our coach attends competitions, because they believe it is part of their personal responsibility as a coach, and because they want to help our swimmers achieve their best possible performance. Swimmer Progression: Swimmers progress and ability is monitored over time and they will be recommended for progression to a higher group when they are capable of higher training loads, and if they are motivated to achieve more. Progression is not age based, although we try to ensure continued contact with age group peers. The coach will often identify the need for swimmers to move up before the swimmer realises they are ready. Part of this role involves motivating swimmers to take the next step in their sport. Duty of Care: Coaches have a duty of care for swimmers in their care and control. Coaches are expected to be good role models for swimmers, to participate in club activities and treat swimmers with respect not just as athletes but as whole beings. In return coaches expect swimmers, and their parents, to treat them with respect. Coaches must constantly monitor the swimmers under their control having regard to their ongoing safety and wellbeing. Coaches develop a good understanding of their swimmers which is an essential part of being able to successfully undertake their duty of care. Competition Planning: Coaches look at competition programs and decide what events swimmers should participate in to further their development. For this reason the coach may select some, or all, the races a swimmer is to compete in. This is done with a long term view to prepare swimmers for good performances at a higher level meets later in the season. Short term gains are not the objective although any success is welcome. For example Country squad and above swimmers are working towards Country Championships and/or State Championships and ALL 16 & under swimmers prepare for All Juniors in March. Younger swimmers are also initially working towards the 12/Under Dolphins Encouragement Meet in November (District Team). District Championships are a target for all swimmers. Training and competition is geared to seeing swimmers perform at their best in the most important meets of the year. For a new or developing swimmer this may be aiming for good results at local meets or their school carnival. Some swimmers even attend out of district competitions to aid their preparation. Reporting: At club committee meetings the Head Coach gives a report outlining what swimmers are doing, how they are developing, their achievements etc. The coach also undertakes swimmer testing during training programs and keeps records of swimmer s progress. This may be swim or kick tests for time, stroke counts, stroke rates etc. Each swimmer also receives regular feedback at training and meets on their own progress what they are doing well, what they need to work on, and information about their development in the near future. As you can see the role of a coach is a very busy one. Please support our coaches as they work with you to ensure the best possible sporting and personal development experience for your child. Our swimming team is comprised of Swimmer, Parent and Coach. We all have a role to play in getting the best possible outcome. Remember T.E.A.M. Together Everyone Achieves More!
