Country Club of Lexington Swim Team 2017 Handbook
Welcome The Country Club of Lexington is excited to have you as part of our swim team. Please take time to review the information in this handbook. If you have any questions, please or see one of the swim team representatives or Coach Johnna. We will be glad to assist you in any way we can. Team Mission Our goal at the Country Club of Lexington is to provide a structured environment, promoting discipline in the fundamentals for team and individual success in the sport of swimming. With parental encouragement, every swimmer should strive for individual growth while exemplifying sportsmanship, contributing to a positive and unified team atmosphere. Most importantly, each swimmer should take pride in his/her efforts, no matter the outcome, and take pride in representing the Country Club of Lexington in the Columbia Swim League. Our Collective Responsibilities Show respect to everyone. Parents and coaches must work together for the team to be successful. It is also imperative that swimmers show respect to all coaches and teammates. We want to exhibit the highest level of sportsmanship we possibly can. Show support for our team. This means staying positive before and after your races and cheering for all your teammates. Our team can grow only through the support of the parents. Each parent, swimmer and coach sets the tone for the health and well-being of our team through all our words and actions. If we want to have a close, supportive environment for everyone, then we must display this attitude in our role on the team, and be a contributor to the team s success. Be on time. Be on deck, ready to swim, at the start of your respective age group s set time for, preferably several minutes before-hand. It is at the head coach s discretion to move swimmers to groups outside of their designated age group times. Make sure your child has all his equipment, including goggles, swimsuit, and fins. During s, do not interrupt the coaches unless it is an emergency. Parents may aid in the development of their child in swimming, but not during swim. Please allow the coaches to coach. Communicate with the head coaches at appropriate times. There are appropriate times to discuss certain issues that may arise throughout the summer. Any questions regarding actions or decisions made by the coaching staff should be addressed with the head coaches only. The best time to address these concerns is after or after a meet, not while either of these is taking place. A note can also be left in the folder of the head coaches and may be discussed at a later time.
Johnna Edwards, Head Coach Coaching Staff My name is Johnna Edwards, and I will be the head coach for the Country Club of Lexington Swim Team this year. This is my 11th year coaching a summer swim league team. I am a math teacher at White Knoll High School and the Varsity Swim Team Coach for WKHS. I am also currently coaching for Palmetto Aquatics with Heath Edwards (no relation :) ), and I coach the Silver Seals Special Olympics Swim Team from January until the State Games in May. I am so excited to be coaching for the Country Club of Lexington again this summer! I had a great time last summer, and I look forward to another great season! Nathaniel Fournel Coach Nathaniel is returning for his 4th summer as a CCL Assistant Coach. He began swimming here at CCL when he was 9 years old, and this will mark his 10th summer swimming. He also swam with Palmetto Aquatics for 6 years. Nathaniel is graduating in May with honors from LHS, and he will attend the University of South Carolina in the Fall. He is excited to have the opportunity to coach each of your swimmers again this summer. Emma Jeter Emma will be a senior at Lexington High School this fall. She started swimming summer league for CCL after 1 st grade and fell in love with the sport. This will be her eleventh year swimming for the country club and since then, she has won the Most Valuable and the most likely to be a swim coach awards. She has been on the varsity swim team at Lexington High School since she was in 7 th grade and has lettered every year. She also swam year-round for Palmetto Aquatics for nine years. As a kid, Emma won a triathlon and realized she enjoyed running as well. She ran track for the Lexington High School the past two years. Outside of the pool and track, she enjoys reading books, painting and staying informed in politics. She s in the Spanish Club, Anatomy & Physiology Club, Special Olympics Fan Club and a Political Debate Club. She enjoys Anatomy and the Health Sciences and aspires to go to medical school. She loves coaching and can t wait for the new season to start. Seth Kurtz Seth is 18 years old and will be a freshman at University of Colorado at Boulder in the fall. He started his swimming career at age 8 with the Country Club of Lexington s summer league team. That first year he was recognized as Most Improved swimmer. He has swum with CCL for 8 summers and has earned the Most Valuable Swimmer award three times. At age 12 he became champion in the 100 butterfly and 100 IM. He has also been a part of six championship relay teams. As a Lexington High School varsity swimmer, Seth lettered each of the 6 years he swam for the Wildcats and was a SCHSL State Meet qualifier the past four years. Seth especially enjoys open water swimming. In the summer of 2015 he was the first place finisher in the 12.1 miles Swim Around Key West. In 2016 he finished the Key West swim in 2 nd place. He has participated in the Dam Swim for Drew, a 2.1-mile swim across the Lake Murray Dam, six times, with one 3rd place finish and five 1st place finishes. Seth swims competitively year round for Carolina Aquatics Swim Club in Columbia. He has qualified for the State Team and competed in the
SC State Championships each year since age 10. Seth enjoys hard work and new challenges and is looking forward to his third year coaching at CCL. Katarina Williams Katarina is 19 and will be a sophomore at Clemson University. She started swimming in a summer league in Virginia when she was four. She earned the most improved swimmer one season and the most valuable swimmer the following season. When she moved to South Carolina she became a member of the Top Spin summer league for two seasons. After lettering on the White Knoll Swim Team in eighth grade, and being voted captain this year, she joined the CCL team. This will be her fifth year coaching for CCL. Katarina has also been a volunteer with the Special Olympics swim team for several seasons. Jenna Couture Jenna will be a junior next year at Lexington High School. She was a volunteer coach last summer and is returning this year as an assistant coach. Jenna joined the CCL swim team when she was seven years old, and this will be her tenth year swimming summer league. She has been recognized as age-group MVP five times and is a two-time Miss CCL recipient. Jenna is a member of the Lexington High School Varsity Swim Team and has qualified for the State Meet for the past 3 years. Jenna is active throughout the year as a member of the JV Cheer Team and the National Honor Society. She loves to lifeguard, babysit, and teach swim lessons during the summer. Jenna is super excited to be part of the CCL coaching staff this summer. 10 A Meets vs. B Meets What s the difference between A meets and B meets? A meets are scored meets and the swimmers with the fastest times will swim (the points our team earns at each A meet, and at, go towards our season total and ranking with the Columbia Swim League). At these meets, each team can enter three swimmers per individual event. However, every effort will be made to enter ALL swimmers who sign up in at least one individual event at an A meet. The week of each A meet, there will be a sign-up sheet available at the pool on Monday and Tuesday. It will be the parents responsibility to sign up their child to swim at each A meet. If the child is not signed up by the end of the day, Tuesday, of that week, he will not swim. B meets are intended to be more of a for less experienced swimmers and an opportunity for swimmers who do not get to swim multiple events at A meets. In B meets, swimmers typically are expected to swim 2-3 events. More experienced swimmers will be discouraged from attending B meets to promote equal opportunity for swimmers of differing ability and experience. Communication The two main ways that schedule changes, team issues/events, and social events will be communicated to you are through and your child s file folder at the pool. All swimmers ribbons will be placed in their files. Please check your swimmer s file each time you are at the pool. If you are not receiving team s by June 1, please contact swimteamrepccl@gmail.com. Required: team suit, goggles, swim fins Swim Equipment **Swim fins are used to build strength in the legs, improve stroke technique, and build stamina. You can order fins through Augusta Swim Supply. Let them know that you are with CCL SWIM or
Team Support In order to have a fun, organized and successful season, our team depends on the time and energy of parent volunteers. It takes a minimum of 30 workers from the home team to run a meet and about half that for an away meet. You must sign up to help with at least two meets. Please see Amy David, Volunteer Coordinator, if you have not already signed up. Parents must be signed up to volunteer in order for their swimmer to be entered in meets. When we all share the workload, everyone has a good time! We need several parents who are willing to be Stroke and Turn Judges. All stroke and turn judges must attend training each year, or be approved by Andy Rutledge. The Columbia Swim League is offering several training opportunities this year (days and times will be communicated when they are confirmed): April 23 Timberlake Country Club 3 7pm April 29 Rockbridge 10am 12pm TBA May Quail Valley TBA May Spring Valley Country Club TBA May Topspin TBA May Country Club of Columbia TBA May Quail Hollow TBA May Greenview TBA May City of Sumter TBA May Country Club of Lexington Additional opportunities may be added. If you are interested in attending one of these training opportunities, please contact the CCL Team Rep at swimteamrepccl@gmail.com Team Sponsors Please let us know if you are interested in sponsoring the CCL swim team this summer. You can support our team and have your company listed on this year s t- shirts, worn by swimmers and parents all summer. We will also display your company s name on a banner at all home swim meets. Columbia Swim League Scholarship The Columbia Swim League has scholarship applications available to high school juniors and seniors. Please look on the Columbia Swim League site for more information, The application does require final transcripts from the school year.
Severe Weather Please note the Columbia Swim League Inclement Weather Guidelines (1) An individual shall be designated by the host team at each meet to monitor the weather. This person will be explicitly responsible for listening for thunder and watching for lightning, and for bringing thunder and lightning to the attention of the team reps or referee. (2) At the first sound of thunder or sighting of lightning, the pool and pool deck must be cleared. Swimmers are not allowed back in the water or onto the pool deck until at least 20 minutes have passed without hearing thunder or seeing lightning.. A wait period longer than 20 minutes can be used if agreed to by the team reps before the start of the meet. The use of "the first sound of thunder" to determine an impending storm may be replaced by reliance on an in-house weather channel or weather-band radio, if agreed upon by the reps prior to the meet. The team reps need to clarify the implementation of this item before the day of the meet as part of their pre-meet discussion. (3) Swimming will be disallowed when conditions are such that the bottom of the pool is not visible at the starting end of any in which starts are occurring, or when the rain is so heavy that the noise interferes with the starter's calls. (4) When thunder has been heard or lightning has been seen, or when visibility and/or auditory conditions are in question, both reps meet with the referee, who has the final call on enforcement of (2) and (3). (5) When a meet has been delayed due to inclement weather and the meet is resumed at 7:30 p.m. or later, then the 6-and-unders swim their remaining events next. (6) At 8 pm, if the meet has already been delayed an hour and a delay due to inclement weather is still in effect, the meet can be ended or rescheduled depending on how many points have been achieved (i.e., the "231" rule). Note that a B meet need not be rescheduled at all. Thank you for being a part of our swim team this year!
