The Leadership Coach Dear Coaches, Quote of the Week: Don t tell me the skies the limit when there are footsteps on the moon. ~Unknown 2013 Club Excellence Program Announcement The 2,800 member clubs of USA Swimming are the foundation of the historic success of USA Swimming s Olympic efforts. We are proud to honor the dedication and commitment of these clubs as we introduce the 12th year of the USA Swimming Club Excellence Program. We are pleased to formally announce the 2013 program and provide directions regarding the application process. For complete program information and the link to begin the application, please visit the Club Excellence page on the USA Swimming website. In order to apply for the 2013 program, clubs must: 1. Complete the online application form available on the USA Swimming website. 2. Submit the performance scoring using the Online Meet Entry (OME) system on the USA Swimming website. Instructions for using OME are included in this packet. 3. Submit the online application and performance scoring by the Oct 19, 2012 deadline. Following is the complete time line for the 2013 program: : Application period begins. Program announcement distributed to all USA-S clubs. Application form and info available on the USA-S Swimming website : Deadline for applications from clubs to USA Swimming : Club rankings announced by USA Swimming & Grant applications sent to all qualifying clubs (Gold and Silver) : Deadline for grant applications to USA Swimming from qualifying clubs : Grant awards announced by USA Swimming For More Information: Please contact Pat Hogan or Tom Avischious or call the USA Swimming office at (719) Sign Up Now For A USA Swimming Committee This year, the committee application form is only available online. There won t be any hard copies in Greensboro. Anyone interested in serving on a USA Swimming committee must complete the new online

Top Five Excuses For Not Eating Healthy By Chris Rosenbloom, PhD, RD, CSSD Athletes, like most people, have many excuses for why they don t eat healthy foods. However, athletes, unlike most people, participate in hard training and competition so their need for calories and nutrients are high. Skipping meals and choosing nutrient-poor junk foods can contribute to feeling tired and not getting the most out of your training. Here are some of the most common excuses I hear from athletes, and some quick fixes to break the excuse cycle. Peter Clark Sport Development Consultant Eastern Zone USA Swimming Direct Cell Fax Office 1 Olympic Plaza Colorado Spring, Colorado The U.S. Olympic Committee has secured the rights to broadcast the Paralympic Games in the United States, and its writers, photographers and camera crews will be creating multiple daily news and feature stories about Paralympic athletes, competitions and other London events. This will be in addition to the 600 hours of live web streaming done by the International Paralympic Committee, as well as highlight shows on NBC Sports Network (Sept. 4, 5, 6 and 11 at 7 p.m. ET) and NBC on Sept. 16 from 2-3:30 p.m. The USOC s daily video content will be available on it YouTube channel. By John G. Miller The point of this missive is not to pick on a nice guy, but to show how easy it is to say, I believe in accountability! and then not practice it. A month ago we had a gent named Kyle, representing a large landscaping firm, come to our house to talk about a major project. Kyle is the general manager of the company and its many employees. This is no mom and pop shop. As this likeable fella and I chatted and connected he asked what I do for a living. I told him I m an author of books about personal accountability. His immediate response was, Well, that s the way I raise my kids. It s all about being responsible, ya know! I said, Really? That s terrific. Good for you. It s the only way to live. Fast forward one month. And now the rest of the story.

The Leadership Coach By Peter Burwash Appreciating Self-Starters After the NFL draft was held in April, the Oakland Raiders new general manager, Reggie McKenzie, made it clear that he was going to change the team s culture after the passing of Al Davis. What stood out most to me was his comment that only self-starters need apply. In the last decade or two, we have seen an increase in people having a sense of entitlement and expecting things to come to them as opposed to earning the rights and privileges. What a leader truly appreciates in someone is the ability of the individual to do things without being asked. They do not need to be prodded, forced or begged to get the job done. Because of the entitlement attitude that has become so prevalent, so many leaders, whether in the sports arena or not have been forced into being baby sitters. Leaders like McKenzie should not always look for the fastest, the strongest or the biggest names. Instead they should focus on getting players who will be on the field before practice begins or stay after it ends to refine their skill set. Those will be the players you want to have on your team in those last few minutes of a tied game. You can trust that they will be prepared.
