We can only be successful in aquatics by sharing our experiences and knowledge with others and learning from them in return. I've only been successful because I was lucky enough to have people in my life (professionally and personally) that allowed me to be involved on a local, state and national level and always encouraged me.

Get involved and network with your fellow professionals. Someone out there is going through the same issues you are or has gone through it and can help you. Only through talking to people will you be able to get that extra help. CPRS is a great resource and I have found great value in my leadership involvement. It has given me exposure to do things that have helped me advance personally and professionally. A great start is to attend the California Aquatic Management School!

If nothing else, focus on these core principals with your staff: Prevention: lifeguards are there to prevent major injuries.

In short, they should be lifeguarding with a sense of fear of the unknown.

9 Tom Hellmann What I believe today: Lifeguarding has evolved so much in the 20+ years I have been involved. While the skills, equipment, and make up of a lifeguard has changed over that time, the primary core principals have not. If nothing else, focus on these core principals with your staff: Prevention: lifeguards are there to prevent major injuries. Teach them what to look for that is dangerous and how to interject in a polite manner for great customer service. Vigilance: staying aware and staying observant. In short, they should be lifeguarding with a sense of fear of the unknown. Recognition: teaching what drowning looks like to the staff is vital to them being successful and knowing when to act. Response: physical fitness and hydrodynamic abilities are critical to being able to confidently perform a rescue. Water Rescues: focus on shallow water rescue and active rescue (statistics show these are the 2 primary rescues performed by lifeguards throughout the state).

Why did the staff stay there so much longer than average? Perhaps it was the culture of the organization we had there. In a survey of former staffers at the pool, 58% of the survey respondents applied to the pool because they had a friend who worked there and most applied because they had heard it was a great place to work, had an atmosphere that was community or family oriented, and bosses were cool. The facility supervisors and coordinators framed the culture found at the facility and over time, the staff took it upon themselves to reinforce the existing culture.

Chris Chamberlain Teamwork was vital to this culture, and 97% of the survey respondents stated they had participated in some form of team sports growing up.

The Same Team culture helped bond the staff together in enacting the mission of the organization.

The high sense of community and camaraderie among the staff was something that came to be called Same Team. The Same Team culture helped bond the staff together in enacting the mission of the organization. The community culture also manifested itself among the seasonal management staff, where meetings were often open discussions about operations, noting staff observations to assist pool managers in coaching younger staff members, and opportunities to develop leadership skills and abilities.

Many people ask me Cullen, why do you always sign the number 41 on your autograph? My father always wanted to be a professional basketball player, his jersey number was always 41. Unfortunately his dream didn t come to pass. He did develop a new dream though, it was for me to follow in his foot steps and become a professional Basketball player. We practiced day and night, but after almost drowning and seeing my first swim meet I fell in love with swimming. Being the great man that he was, he always supported me. Unfortunately when I was only 16, he passed away. My father always told me to reach for my dreams. After becoming a professional athlete I vowed that although it wasn t in the sport he dreamed, HIS dream would live on through me. So the 41 is to honor my father and his dreams for me.

15 Manuel Gonzalez San Diego County Aquatic Council Past President Princeton University CPRS Award of Excellence: Drowning Prevention Program City of San Diego District Manager Cogito ergo sum = I think, therefore I am Rene Descartes People in aquatics need to start recognizing just how important they are to the community they serve aquatics is just as indispensable as other Departments in public safety, and if we don t believe that then nobody will. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. People need to look at what others are doing! Establish a good support to bounce off ideas, problems and solutions. It s important not to be insular, and this support network really needs to extend outside their organization.

I think the joy that showed through in my swimming movies comes from my lifelong love of the water, she explains. No matter what I was doing, the best I felt all day was when I was swimming.

I would really like it if, when they hear a statement, to ask why. I would like to see the aquatics professionals use a true inter-disciplinary approach to aquatics. People don t realize how quickly and silently a drowning can happen, whether at a commercial aquatics facility or in a backyard swimming pool. We need to educate them.
