2 DERC DOLPHINS SUMMER SWIM TEAM Welcome! 1. Weekly practice schedule will begin the second Monday in June through the end of July, Monday through Friday 10:00 11:00 am. 2. Swim Meets will be scheduled in advance. Schedules will be provided once available. 3. Swimmers are expected to compete in swim meets. Swimmers 8 and under must be able to swim 25 yards unassisted. 4. Parents are expected to help and volunteer as timers or stagers during swim meets. 5. 3 What to bring during swim practice? DERC DOLPHINS SWIM TEAM Year Swimsuits: For girls, a one-piece suit is recommended. For boys, the suit will be the knee length style ("jammers"). Board/baggy shorts are not recommended since they create too much drag. If that reasoning does not work, let your son go to practice in his shorts; eventually he will pick up the idea from his fellow teammates. 2. Goggles: Goggles are required for all swimmers. Goggles protect the eyes from chlorine and help your child see underwater. For new swimmers, goggles will also allow them to swim with their eyes open. This gives them greater confidence in the water. The coach will help them adjust the goggles and teach them how to dive so that their goggles stay in place. Prescription googles are available at 3. Swim Cap: A swim cap should be worn at practice as well as meets by girls as well as boys with longer hair. Once your cap is dry, a light dusting of baby powder will keep your latex cap from sticking to itself. Silicone or Lycra caps are easier to put on and take off, they last longer, and they do not pull hair as much. All swimmers are required to wear the D.E.R.C. Swim Team cap during swim meets. Wearing the team cap promotes team spirit and helps enable teammates, parents, and coaches to identify DERC swimmer(s) in competition. 4. Towels: Bring extra towels, if possible. 5. Water Bottle: Bring a water bottle. Stay hydrated to prevent muscle cramps during swim practice. 6. Sunscreen spray and sunscreen stick for the face. 7. Listening ears, a good behavior and have fun!!! What should you bring to a Swim Meet? Swimsuits/Jammers Goggles Swim team cap Water bottle and snack One or more towels Sunscreen & face stick A Sharpie fine-point permanent marker Between-event activities, such as handheld games, cards, board games, books, and crayons/coloring books for the younger kids. PLEASE make sure your child s name is clearly marked on the items. Umbrellas or ponchos if rain is in the forecast. Chair(s) - Although there are quite a few chairs at the host pool but there are not enough for the entire participating team. You will want to bring a couple of your own. You can always leave them in the car if you don t need them. *Note to Parents: Swim coach/assistant coaches can use your help during swim meets. Please participate at swim meets by volunteering to be a timer and stagers. Timers: You will be stationed at one lane where you will use a stop watch to obtain and record times. Best seat in the house! Stagers: You will ensure swimmers are staged and lined up in the correct heat and lanes. Make sure the swimmers do not miss their race and are in the right spot at the right time. This helps the meet run smoothly and efficiently. *During a meet, swimmers will be asked to remain in their own team area with the rest of their team, unless they are swimming. Please supervise any other children you bring with you. Page 3

4 Strokes, Events, and Swim Terminology you should know The four competitive strokes are freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. 1. Freestyle: A term given to any stroke, but generally applies to crawl stroke in competitive swimming. A crawl stroke is A stroke performed in which the swimmer lies face down. Each arm in turn is pulled throughout the water in a windmill fashion from in front of the body to the side and back around. The elbow is bent on the return. The hand enters the water again in front of the shoulder. The feet perform a constant flutter kick throughout the arm stroke process. 2. Backstroke: A stroke in where the swimmer lies on his/her back. One at a time the arms are raised over the head. They sweep backward into the water in a windmill movement while the feet kick. 3. Breaststroke: A stroke, in which the swimmer lies face down, arms straight out. The arms are pulled back in a half circle until they are even with the shoulders. They are then brought in close to the body with the hands under the face. The swimmer then performs a whip kick as the arms return to the starting position. 4. Butterfly: A stroke performed by the swimmer lying face down. Arms moving in unison. The first dolphin twolegged kick is when the two arms are entering the water in front. The arms are then pulled down through the water in a keyhole pattern. Next another two legged dolphin kick is made followed by the arms coming out of the water at the same time behind the swimmer. Then the arms come back around to the starting point making a full cycle. Some of the terms used in swimming and at swim meet: Lap: One length of the pool regardless of pool length. 25: One lap of the pool. The Smyrna pool is 25 yards. We may swim at some pools that are 25 meters. 50: 2 laps of the pool 100: 4 laps of the pool IM (Individual Medley): One swimmer performs all four strokes in the race in the order of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle (helpful tip to remember order of strokes: butter your back, breast free). Relay: 4 members selected by the coach to form a team. Each member swims one leg of the race. The "leg" length depends on the age of the child and may be either 1 or 2 laps. Medley Relay: Each member of the relay team performs a different designated stroke, in the order of backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle (order of strokes is in alphabetical order). NOTE: Not the same order at the IM. Free Relay: Each member of the relay team performs the freestyle stroke. Legal: Swimmer can perform start, stroke and turns correctly according to league rules. 6 & under will work to become legal in only freestyle and backstroke. All other swimmers will work to become legal in all 4 strokes. Start: In the start, the swimmer is called to the starting position by the starter via a series of whistle blows, who then visually checks that all swimmers are motionless. When all swimmers are set, the gun or starting horn is sounded to start the race. If the starter or referee feels that one of the swimmers has moved, left early, or gotten an unfair advantage, the race will be recalled. This is called a false start. When the starter directs the swimmer to "take your mark," the swimmers should assume a starting position. No swimmer shall be in motion until the starting signal is given. A swimmer will be disqualified on his/ her second false start. Also, a swimmer who unnecessarily delays in assuming a completely motionless starting position shall be charged with a false start. Heat: When more than six swimmers enter one event the swimmers are divided into subgroups. Each event may then consist of two or more heats of that same event. Heat Sheet: A program for a swim meet. Swimmers are listed by their event number and heat. Seed (an event): Refers to how swimmers may be placed to swim in an event. In championship meets swimmers are seeded by their time in an event. Dual Meet: Any swim meet where two teams compete. Disqualification: When a swimmer does not follow one of the rules governing an event. His/her swim does not count and is not placed or scored with the other swims in that event. Labeling Swimmers: It s extremely helpful for the swimmers and the coaches to have the swimmers marked up before the meet starts. A good method of marking the swimmers will be to label the event, heat, & lane that they will be swimming in. In the example below you can see that the first event that the swimmer is swimming in is Event 1, Heat 2, Lane 3.
