4 1 Joint Chair / CE Report Our Vision During early 2009 the board set a vision for SNZ of being World Class in Every Pool. This vision encapsulates the picture of where swimming in New Zealand will be. We can see ourselves in that picture and feel what it will be like. Whether it is success on the international podium, in the teaching pool, supporting our coaches and teachers, grassroots participation or as a National Sports Organisation, we will strive to get world class outcomes. At the most fundamental level our purpose is to develop the swimming community in New Zealand, promote our brand, events, swimmers, members and products, govern at best practice standard and lead as the authority and change maker for swimming in New Zealand. During 2010 all of swimming has worked hard to continue the journey towards achieving the outcomes outlined in our purpose and vision. Major Highlight The major highlight of the year has to be that State Insurance has partnered with SNZ and become our first ever principal sponsor. This sponsorship will assist SNZ to deliver success and build future capability across a broad range of areas that support our key goals. State Insurance needs no introduction to New Zealanders; They like SNZ, have been involved in NZ communities for over 100 years. There is a lot of synergy between the cultures of SNZ and State and they are already proving to be fantastic partners of our organisation. We are looking forward to working closely with them over the next three years on initiatives which will help grow the profile of our sport and span our entire strategic plan and allow State Insurance to meet their goals from our partnership for the benefit of the community. Our other key achievements include: Competitive Success The year started with top 12 performances from Hayley Palmer and Moss Burmester at the world championships in Rome. We made a number of changes to the Performance and Pathways programme such as the employment of Mark Regan as our new head coach and the introduction of the Australian Coaching Accreditation scheme. These changes will ensure our growth and development towards closing the gap on the world s best. We have selected a strong team to represent us at the upcoming Commonwealth Games and have three swimmers attending the Youth Olympic Games. A team of

5 14 is attending the Pan Pacific Games and six the Junior Pan Pacific Games. We hosted a strong team from Australia for the annual Trans Tasman competition the first time this competition has been held in NZ. The exciting news that the government is investing significant funding into the expansion of the high performance environment at the Millennium Institute will further strengthen our programme in future years. Teaching Standards We have realigned our team to ensure that the priority areas of supporting swim schools, SNZ clubs and primary schools receive the right focus. Our primary schools learn to swim programme has been reviewed and we are ready to release a significantly enhanced programme over the next few months. We are improving our ability to support primary schools through establishing seven new community positions with the full support of a number of new partners. These positions will provide hands on support to schools in the community with a view to working closer with our clubs and supporting better linkages with schools to drive increased interest in young people choosing swimming as their sport. Delivering Valued Services In 2008 as an outcome of the AGM, we launched an initiative (Project Vanguard) to review the way the entire organisation delivers its products and services to the community. We have begun phase 2 of this project and this will be a major priority for During phase 1, Project Vanguard has sought feedback from clubs and regions and it is very clear that what we have always done and the way we have done it will not be anywhere near enough to secure a successful future for our clubs and their members. We must change our organisation so that consistency, communication and collaboration are features of the service we provide to all members of our sport. As a forward thinking organisation we cannot continue to ignore the imperative for change. Maximise our Profile Our new partnership with State Insurance will provide SNZ with significant opportunities to maximise its profile over the next three years. During the last financial year, we have made considerable progress towards this goal. Our achievements include: the inaugural State sponsored SNZ Awards dinner bringing the swimming community together the SNZ Legends Relay which raised over $40,000 for charity the EPIC Lakeswim series which was launched at Lake Taupo and which may be expanded this year to include Lake Pupuke in Auckland the naming of our national team: The State AquaBlacks Resource our organisation During the year we have continued to grow our organisation and our ability to deliver the ambitious goals that we have set ourselves for We have recorded another strong financial result and the combined efforts of the SNZ Board, its committees, our auditors and the management team have ensured high standards underpin our financial controls and risk assessment processes. We are well positioned for the challenges of We acknowledge the challenges with finding a new database solution for our sport. This project is vitally important for many valid reasons and whilst it has taken longer than expected we continue to work through the options available to seek a win-win solution. To deliver a broad programme that consistently provides NZ swimmers and coaches with international podium success. 2 To develop and govern world class standards of education that support all swim teacher and coach pathways. To continuously deliver valued services to our membership, through the most effective structures. To boldly promote swimming and our people as vibrant participants in the sports and leisure sector. To lead, develop and sustain people, finance and technology resources sufficient to achieve our vision. Summary In this year s annual report you will read in more detail about the many outstanding achievements that have occurred during Everyone in the NZ swimming community should have a sense of pride in these achievements. Without the support and passion of you all, swimming in New Zealand would not be progressing as it is. To all our swimmers, parents, coaches, officials and volunteers we thank you for your dedication and commitment and we look forward to working with you all during 2011.

6 3 A word from Principal Sponsor State Insurance State partners with Swimming New Zealand and becomes principal sponsor State Insurance recently announced the biggest sponsorship deal in its one hundred year history of supporting New Zealand communities. The sponsorship is providing critical resourcing for leading organisations in the swim and swim safety sector responsible for education; Swimming New Zealand, Surf Life Saving New Zealand and the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series. State s sponsorship of Swimming New Zealand enhances the essential services Swimming New Zealand currently provides and allows Swimming New Zealand to: Substantially increase its limited resources to support all primary schools and commercial swim schools in teaching water safety skills. The goal is to be able to provide every major community in New Zealand with dedicated learn to swim support. New Zealand has one of the worst annual drowning tolls in the developed world and State wants to change this by helping these organisations continue to teach swim and survival skills so that we can all enjoy the water, safely. Learning to swim and survive in the water is also essential to enjoying so many other pursuits that we kiwis love such as surfing, fishing and kayaking. SNZ s Learn to Swim Team teach water safety skills that will keep children safer in the water and ensure recreational swimming and aquatic activities are among their options as they go from paddling pool to podium.
