Most of these players trying to get registered before their events proved to be chaotic. Long queues snaked around the buildings, we took over three hours, and we were the lucky ones. Unfortunately things went into meltdown and caused no end of trouble. Still everyone eventually got to their Centres or Arenas. So the Games began. Editors: Arlene Verplak Andrew Beaton Assistant Editor: Contributions to: Andrew Beaton arlene_verplak@ yahoo.com or Contributions abeaton@ to: arlene_verplak@ supernerd.com.au yahoo.com Tel: Tel: Two hundred and forty seven table tennis players were keen to get started at the Hurstville Centre. They came from many countries including Germany, Russia, China, Taipei, Brazil, France, Denmark, Japan, Hong Kong, USA, Canada, Malaysia and Ukraine. There were lots of smiles, friendly faces, different accents, hardly any English from the visitors and lots of noise. This made for exciting table tennis throughout the week.

The regular team of Bev and Brian James headed the Organising Team with plenty of help from TTNSW and Angelo Tabone. It was interesting to watch Bev take the heat out of an argument between a fiery Brazilian and an equally fiery Chinese girl, neither could talk English and there was much shouting from both. Bev with her usual calmness found a way to defuse the argument and both went away satisfied, I think? In the Teams events, Victoria won five gold and one silver: O40 Men Brian Berry, Lory Bisiach Gold O70 Men Case de Bondt, Geoff Nesbitt, Gordon Lee (WA) Gold O70 Men Fred de Bondt, Bruce Greenwood, Werner Krafft (QLD) Silver O70 Women Pam Tait, Margaret Mulcahy, Toshi Amano (Japan) Gold O80 Men Gary Luu, Tom Boyd (NSW) Gold O80 Women Joan Guggenheim, Doreen Bridson (WA) Gold In the Individual events all of the Over 30 men and women were Australians. Russia was the standout in the Over 40 men where six got through the round robin event into the main draw. Brian Berry was also there, winning a tough match against A. Momzerov of Russia to make the semi finals, he won Bronze. Belgin Bennett featured in two medal matches, the Doubles with W. Deng winning Silver and the Mixed Doubles winning Bronze. Fifty three players from all over the world contested the Over 50 Men s Singles, but it was four Australians who made it to the Semi Finals (no Victorians). In the Women s Singles Leonie Whiteford (NSW) was the only Australian to make it to the Semi Finals, but lost to L. Chan (China) in the Bronze play-off. New South Wales dynamic duo Wayne Heginbotham & Bill Robson were never threatened in the Men s Doubles.

3 NETS & VETS Page 3 W O L R D M A S T E R S G A M E S SYD N E Y 2009 T A B L E T E N N I S C O N T. Only one Australian got through to the Semi Finals in the Over 60 Men s Singles, Inh Van Le (NSW), who lost both the Semi Final and the bronze play-off. Buddy Reid had a heart stopping game against Davydenko (Russia) to get to the Quarter Finals, but then lost to Inh Van Le. Mick Wright and Michael Ede were at their best in the final of the Men s Doubles, winning against the hard hitting pair from Taipei. Igof Klaf and Inh Van Le defeated Ken Cole (NSW) and Herbert Neubauer (FRA) for the Bronze. Averil Roberts teamed up with NZ friend Val Beaver to take silver from our Japanese friends in the Women s Doubles. Mick Wright teamed with Pam Tait in the Mixed and got the better of Igor Klaf and Joan Munn for the Bronze. The Over 70 Men s Singles was in doubt until the last minute when Case de Bondt got over the line to win the title from Gordon Lee (WA). Fred de Bondt was not so fortunate and lost the Bronze to Y. Gorbadev (RUS). Pam Tait won Gold in the Women s Singles, and Margaret Mulcahy defeated Toshi Amano (Japan) for the Bronze. Case de Bondt and Geoff Nesbitt teamed up and won Gold in the Men s Doubles. Case de Bondt and Margaret Mulcahy also got Gold in the Mixed Doubles, while Geoff Nesbitt & Lois McConnell beat Nick McConnell & Beryl Davies (NSW) for the Bronze. It was all Australia in the main draw of the Over 80 s. Gary Luu, the only Victorian, won his 3 round robin matches to make it to the main Draw, but lost to KC Trinh (NSW) for the Bronze. Joan Guggenheim got Silver in the Women s Singles losing to Doreen Bridson (WA). Joan teamed with 99 year old Dot de Low (NSW) to get Gold in the Women s Doubles and with Gary Luu in the Mixed Doubles to defeat Gerry and Doreen Bridson in the final. The results show that hardly any of the Semis and Finals were easy, and throughout the week there were many brilliant and exciting matches, it was a good week s table tennis.

This calls for a reconstruction job on the elbow, and means that Lizzie s stay in hospital will be a bit longer. Lizzie is one of our stalwart Friday night workers giving out entries, receipts for money taken etc. and making sure that Tim fills the urn we will miss her smiling presence. The Victorian Veterans Committee and all the players wish her a speedy recovery and hope that she will soon be home again.

5 NETS & VETS Page 5 N O T I C E B O A R D In the O75 Women s Doubles Finals, Joan Guggenheim and Betty Bird were down 2 sets against Prisca Rosario and Dot Sanders. Joan and Betty rallied to make it 2 all. In the 5 th set, a collision occurred and both landed on the floor. In this age group that could be dicey, but Joan and Betty must have been alright, as the last set was 11-1, their way. In a match with President s A Team, Libby Haughton forgot to use her puffer for her asthma, as a result she had a whooping fit wherein air was not getting inside her lungs, a time-out was called. Trish was torn between staying in the umpires chair or calling an ambulance. Thankfully Libby was able to get her breathe back she also won that match! Clive Sim brought the wrong pair of glasses to one of his matches.he could not see the ball if his life depended on it. It s like watching a blind person play table tennis, not possible. Roy Cintolo (Room 212) forgot to turn the TV off one night and fell asleep. Bothered by the noise the TV was making, Jan Tuckwell (Room 213) tried knocking on his door to no avail. She went down to get the Night Manager to unlock Roy s door. Both went in, turned the TV off and everything was quiet again. Roy was completely out of it. talk about a sound sleeper! What was up with Debbie Wilson? Missed the O40 Women s Team medal presentation. Off to the Blue Mountains with a secret admirer.

6 Page 6 Newsletter No 67 AU S T R A L I A N VE T E R A N S TA B L E T E N N I S C H A M P I O N S H I P S W R A P U P by Arlene Verplak The 26 th Australian Veterans Table Tennis Open Championships held this year at Hurstville, NSW, saw 93 teams, 347 players and 9 international countries taking part. Flashback to the inaugural event held in Kingston, Tasmania wherein there were 11 teams and 51 players and New Zealand was the only other country taking part. To say that we have grown is an understatement.. we have in effect, taken off!!! Last year in Perth, I was bewailing the fact that I only got to play one match per day as there were only 6 teams in the O40 Women s Event. This year, there were 9 teams and most days I got to play 2 matches a day. Even though I was so tired at the end of most days, it was OK, because that is what we all came for, to play table tennis with everything we ve got and if that requires sore muscles, aching bones and seeing double at the end of the day, so be it. The Opening Ceremony was held at the Peakhurst Bowling & Recreation Club. We were all adequately fed; the food kept coming (it seem to disappear as soon as the plates landed on the tables, heck, sometimes the waiters had their plates emptied before they reached the tables!). The oldest playing member, Dot de Low was presented with her 99 years old Birthday cake (shaped like a table tennis table, complete with a net, bat & ball). At this point in time her goal is to compete at the World Veterans Table Tennis Championships in Hohot, Mongolia next year.

The photo session for each State Team took quite a while, going alphabetically; Victoria always ends up last (although West Australia should really have that spot). We were all eager to get back to the Hurstville Aquatic Leisure Centre, as several events were set to start. So the competition began! Starting on time and having the events flowing smoothly was really appreciated, the Organizing Committee deserves special mention: Tournament Director Leonie Whiteford Tournament Controllers Brian & Bev James Organising Committee NSW Veterans Table Tennis Assn. Tounament Administration Ted & Jan Davis, Michael Turner, Phil Males Venue Manager Douglas Flood Referee Ian Finlay Asst. Referees Stephen Gillespie & Graham Boyton Media & Promotion Dennis O Brien & Daniel Lee Organising Committee Jennifer Aduckiewicz, Carol Cowie, Rosemary Towers, Anna Pha, Gillian Hutchi A lot can happen in a year. O40 Women s B Team captain Verna Ho was diagnosed with breast cancer early this year. She has valiantly battled this disease and has undergone chemotherapy sessions. I was proud to be in Verna s team, she showed good judgement, fairness, and never ran out of encouraging words even in the face of numerous defeats (which we had plenty).

8 Page 8 Newsletter No 67 AU S T R A L I A N VE T E R A N S TA B L E TE N N I S C H A M P I O N S H I P S W R A P U P C O N T. Husband Clive Sim, was never too far away to give his personal support. In one match against Queensland B team, Verna was really struggling, you could see the sweat poring off her, the exhaustion in her face, the pallor pronounced. Mark Hall went to where Clive was sitting (as their team also had a match going) and told him, your wife is really battling Clive just sprung out of his chair, left his team mates and immediately went to Verna to give some needed moral and emotional support the tea Clive gave Verna must have contain some magic herbs as Verna won the match in the 5 th set. Even though the team lost 1-10, Verna s triumph was a win for us all. The team events wrapped up on Wednesday. Victoria got the most medals, but NSW got the most Gold this year. The Open Events and awarding of medals went smoothly. A lot of exciting matches and great table tennis was seen. Jeff Drew (WA) was sidelined with a torn calf muscle, hence disappointing his groupies (of which I am a member, but not the President) as he was unable to play in the Open Events. However, wonderful classic shots were seen from Wayne Heginbotham(NSW), Max Wellington (Qld), Craig Campbell (WA) and Niels Ramberg (Den). The Closing Function was held at the Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club. The food was good, the music even better and the ambience and setting was great. This event will be quite a challenge to top, NSW really pulled out all the stops for this shindig. After a week of seeing players in sweaty shirts, boxy shorts, tousled hair, and 6 o clock shadow, it is quite a sight to behold when everyone cleans-up to attend this Social Dinner Dance.

Peter Sheedy dancing with 3 women. must be the suit, but he carries it well (complete with his number attached at the back)...just in case someone wants a match. Mick & Judith Wright, it s like watching Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in one of their movies. they move so well together, and what about the queen of Saturday Night Fever, I would award that to Jan Paolini. The Dancing Queen award however still belongs to Ivana, but the Lady in Red award was Belgin s. Michael Donlon was all concentration when it came to those dance steps, his dancing partner made sure they were in rhythm. Roy Cintolo and Jim Furness saw the girls (Vicki, Debbie, Trish, Jeanne, Ivana, the two Jan s (Paolini & Tuckwell), Jean & Roma) doing a group dance and they just ambled along and joined in. doing the jive, the twist or mostly flailing around with style. I successfully dragged Andrew to the dance floor, but dancing seems more tiring than table tennis. In the end, just watching everyone have a great time, was the best part of it all.
