As the name implies, the LTA Tournament Committee expects this to be a long-running and prestigious tournament that will certainly garner respect and notoriety for LTA. SEE PAGE 3 Thank You! Becky Fell Becky has served as Vice President and league coordinator of the LTA since its founding in early 006. Under her leadership, the LTA league participation resulted in our association being ranked in 34th place among all of the 18 CTA member organizations in 006 an awesome accomplishment for a brand-new CTA member! Unfortunately, because of growing demands for her time from a new job, Becky has resigned from the board and as league coordinator in February. Becky, you have been fantastic! Your expertise and passion for the LTA will be greatly missed on the Board of Directors. Women s Spring Tennis Laurie Chrisman is hosting Spring Tennis Ladders, which will begin Wednesday, March 1st. The deadline for signups, on a first-come basis, is Thursday, March 15th. Four (4) Singles Ladders are offered with a limit of 6 players in each. Four (4) Doubles Ladders are offered with a limit of 0 teams in each. To sign up, contact Laurie at lgchrisman@hotmail.com LTA MISSION STATEMENT Longmont Tennis Association (LTA) is a nonprofit community-supported organization dedicated to promoting the sport of tennis and improving the Longmont-area tennis experience. Utilizing local facilities, LTA organizes USTA and CTA-sanctioned leagues and tournaments, as well as LTA-sponsored ladders, socials and drop-in tennis events for its members and their guests. LTA seeks to provide social and competitive tennis activities at minimal cost in a structured, safe environment for players of all ages and skill levels.

2 From the Chair... GREETINGS LTA, As the 007 tennis season approaches, I want to take this opportunity to talk about one of the most important long-term goals of Longmont Tennis Association. Longmont has many area parks with tennis courts, but none large enough to host USTA Adult league matches, which require 5 courts. Area high schools suffice for these league matches, but LTA defers to the high school schedule. Longmont s population is increasing and city leaders have resolved to provide additional recreation options for Longmont residents. Hence, LTA s ultimate goal: A 1 court tennis complex at the Quail Campus for LTA leagues, tournaments, clinics, drop ins, socials, and high school/junior tournaments. Our community ultimately also needs a complex with indoor courts for year-round play. With your participation in LTA membership, leagues, and attendance at the Quail Campus planning meetings, our goal of a large, year-round multi-court facility can be achieved. In 006, LTA was 34th out of 18 organizations that hosted USTA Leagues in Colorado. We need to exceed these numbers this year. I am sending out a challenge to all LTA league participants to play your USTA Leagues through the LTA. You will be showing support for community tennis in the Longmont area, and reaffirming the need for a Tennis Complex, complete with indoor courts. Thank you for your continued support. Dan Raykovitz President Longmont Tennis Association 007 Memberships Since LTA memberships officially expired on February 1, 007, it s time to get on the ball and renew your membership. The easiest way for present and new members to renew or join LTA for 007 is to sign-up on the LTA website using a credit card. As an alternative, a membership form may be printed out from the website, filled in with key information and sent with your check to the LTA mailing address: Longmont Tennis Association, PO Box 5, Longmont, Colorado NOTE: To play on an LTA-sponsored league team, you must be both a USTA member and an LTA member. LTA Mixed & Men s Ladder Tennis Bruce Ross, Ladder coordinator, is in the process of formulating plans for 007 scheduled ladders. His ladder committee, which currently consists of himself and Bob Prater, would like to set up scheduled ladders for mixed doubles, men s singles, and men s doubles, if it can attract additional members to help coordinate these ladders. If you are interested in serving on the committee or if you have suggestions, please contact Bruce at: Bruce.Ross@longmonttennis.org League Coordinator LTA is in urgent need of a league coordinator chairman. If you would like to fill this position or wish to serve on the league committee, please contact any LTA board member. League Coordinator duties are temporarily being filled by Dan Raykovitz, Bruce Ross, and Candee Rundall.

3 more LTA News & Notes LTA Longmont Open Tennis Tournament The Longmont Open will be held this year from June 3rd to June 30th. The tournament desk will be located at Longmont High School, with Carr Park, Skyline High School and Pratt Park used as overflow facilities. Offered events include men s and women's singles, doubles and mixed. There will be a first-round loser s consolation for the divisions. For further information, take a look on-line at using reference tournament ID # or contact the tournament director, Gina Walker, at gina.walker@longmonttennis.org. Gina has prepared a form letter for businesses interested in sponsoring the Longmont Open. Sponsors may have their logos placed on the tournament T-Shirts, their banners displayed at the tournament sites, and their names recognized on the LTA web site and in various LTA publications. Anyone interested in sponsoring the tournament should contact Gina. Many volunteers will be needed to make this event a success for the LTA. Please contact Gina if you are interested in helping out or donating to the 1st Annual Longmont Open. Tennis Socials Although the Greeley WOW facility is an outstanding facility per the LTA participants at winter socials, the unpredictable winter night time drive and the commuting time outweighed the benefit of an evening of tennis. Rather than continue an unpopular event, the LTA board decided to cancel the remainder of the WOW socials. In its place, the LTA has offered Tennis Socials, held on Friday nights at the smaller Longmont Athletic Club tennis bubble. The member response for these new events has been very high, with four Friday night bubble socials filled to capacity. Due to potential LAC schedule conflicts on Friday nights, additional Friday night LTA socials cannot be scheduled until LAC releases these dates. Therefore, any upcoming LAC socials will be announced via . Provided spring does arrive and the snow is off the courts, an Outdoor Tennis Social, 007 LTA Icebreaker, will be scheduled on a Saturday afternoon in late April at Carr Park. For league details visit: NEW USTA/CTA LEAGUE TIEBREAKER This year the CTA has decreed the Coman Tiebreaker will be used in lieu of the standard tiebreaker. The first question is What is a Coman?? Could it be the brother of Conan the Barbarian, late night talk host Conan O Brien, abbreviation for Colorado Man, share responsibility for man like co-chairman, or what? The answer is, none of the above, as the Coman Tiebreaker is named after John Coman, a California tennis umpire, who has been promoting without success, this form of tiebreaker for over a decade. Here is how the Coman Tiebreak procedure works: Same as the existing Standard Tiebreaker, except for the procedure for changing ends of the court. For the Coman tiebreaker, players exchange ends of the court after the first point and every four (4) points thereafter. This tiebreak procedure allows doubles teams to continue serving from the same side of the court as they have been doing throughout the set or match. Also, it evens out court environmental difficulties due to wind, sun, background, noise, etc. How to Find an LTA League Team 1. Send an to leagues@longmonttennis.org expressing your interest in finding a league team to play on. Be specific in your on what you are looking for, and what your ability level is (NTRP rating, competitive experience, etc.).. A member of the LTA League Committee will get back to you by or phone to discuss your interests. We cannot guarantee success, but we will try our best to hook you up with a team or possibly to help you to form a team. LTA CAPTAIN S SIGN-UP PROCEDURE Steps to registering your team for LTA/USTA/CTA Leagues: 1. Visit the LTA website home page at Click on LTA League Registration 3. Download the captain s registration form 4. Fill out and complete the form and send the completed form along with a check to: LTA, PO Box 5, Longmont, CO Upon receipt, the league coordinator will supply the team captain with the USTA/CTA team number 6. Captain and players will then sign-up for the team on the USTA/CTA web site NOTES: All league participants must be members of the USTA and LTA To obtain a team number, the captain must submit the minimum number of players for the respective league: USTA Summer Adult leagues, 8 players; Twilight leagues, 4 players; Senior leagues, 6 players For a team to be included in the league schedule, the minimum number of players must sign up on the USTA web site prior to the deadline Players added after the initial registration form is submitted may sign up on the USTA/CTA web site; however the team captain is responsible for collection and submittal of the LTA fee to the LTA Any questions should be sent to leagues@longmonttennis.org

5 more LTA News & Notes Quail Campus Tennis Courts If you have visited tennis facilities in Boulder and Larimer counties, you have noted most of Longmont s neighboring cities have large multi-court tennis facilities (at least eight courts), while Longmont relies on St. Vrain Schools for two six-court complexes. Loveland, Greeley, Superior, and Fort Collins and Boulder all have large multi-court complexes, some located at recreation centers and others located in city park settings. Ever wonder why Longmont does not have a multi-court facility? The answer is The squeaky wheel gets the oil, and in the past, Longmont tennis players have been quiet and not squeaking. If we, (the LTA membership) desire to have a 1-tennis-court complex in our future, it s time to start making irritating squeaking sounds! The City of Longmont will be holding three Quail Campus Public Hearings at the Longmont Museum starting at 6 pm on: March 5 Visioning (Mandatory to include courts in initial planning) April 16 Review and Comments May 17 Final Plan Review and Comments The purpose of the hearings is to solicit citizen input on how the city should utilize the unused space at the Quail Campus. The City has contracted a consultant to summarize citizen input and prepare alternative master plans for the Quail Campus. Longmont has many other organizations with a different agenda than the LTA. To name a few: Softball fields, soccer fields, skate parks, In-line hockey area, open space, prairie dog land, dog s gone wild area, basketball courts, horseshoe pits, rose gardens, outdoor concert area, picnic tables and benches, bicycle paths, jogging & walking paths. Many of these are good choices for the Quail Campus usage, but the LTA s goal is to have a multi-court tennis facility included in the master plan. Wouldn t it be great to have Longmont host the high school playoffs, similar to what Pueblo does now or have the Longmont Open and leagues played at one central facility? If there is a chance for Longmont to have a large multi-court tennis facility, the LTA needs a LARGE turnout at the public meetings. Please plan to attend these meetings and contact any board member if you would like to provide input at the meetings. Adopt a Park The first cleanup of Carr Park for 007 is scheduled for Sunday, March 18, at 5 PM. If you are interested in helping, please contact Jerry Seguin at (303) Jerry asks that you bring a broom and plastic bag. Since this is the first cleanup after the long winter snow, it might also be wise to bring a pooper scooper and plastic gloves. See you there! 5
