Introduction There are a lot of drills to be done in order to improve a player's game. We are going to solely focus on various drills for doubles play in this ebook. As the game of doubles requires a good court skill and combination with partner, there are quite a number of drills that can be done in order to improve the player's coordination with his/her partner. Inside this ebook we will show you 9 double drills that can help you and your partner improve. If you are not use to these training methods, start slowly and do not overdo it as you might get injured. Upped the pace and sets only when you are ready and fitter. All the best! Player A s shots Player A s movement The feeder s shuttle direction Copyright Page 3
Drill 1: Attack and Defend Drive Drill - In this drill, Player A will stand in front of the net and player B will stand a little bit further to the rear court. Player A and B will drive the shuttle to each other but player A will start to pressure player B first by driving the shuttle right in front of the net. Player B will have to defend all the shot executed by player A and return it to player A's position. - If possible, player B must make the effort by turning his defending position into attacking position to counter attack player A. However, player A should not kill the shuttle but he/she must maintain the pressure given to player B. And player A shouldn t stand too close to the net because it will be easier for player B to counter attack player A as player A won t have any space to recover because they are too close to the net. - The benefit of this drill is to improve defensive skills and develop counter attacking ability in the game. Some players are good when they are defending side to side but they might be weak if opponent tends to smash or attack their body. A good and fast hand skill is required to return opponent's body smash which can be gained from this drill. - Player A can also improve their drive skills as he/she have to maintain the pressure driving to player B in order to avoid them get attacked by player B in this drill. This will improve on their wrist work and speed at the front at the net. -30 times x 6 sets (30 seconds rest between each set) Copyright Page 4
Drill 2: Shuttle Control Drill (Attacking) - In this drill, the feeder will feed the shuttle to player A and B to attack. All the smashes executed by player A and B must be defended by the feeder of the shuttle to any direction in the court. The feeder must also give the front player to attack and kill the shuttle. -Player A and B can rotate front and back anytime they like. Rear court player have to smash all the way to kill the shuttle while the person who takes care of the front must get ready to find the opportunity to kill the shuttle when there is a floating shot at the front court. - This will improve on the partnership combination as they have to communicate with each other while they are in the game. They will have to rotate front and back to attack at various position so that they don t waste their energy killing their opponent. - This drill will also improve the consistency of the smash as players have to keep attacking the feeder without making mistake. In a competitive game, every single mistake you make will gain your opponent a point and this might cause you to lose the game. - The feeder will benefit by improving his defensive skills as he/she is able to defend the shuttle and return them to various spots of player A and B's court shuttles x 3 sets each side (30 seconds rest between each set) Copyright Page 5
Drill 3: Drills (Front 2 Corners) - The feeder will throw the shuttle randomly to 2 front corners in front of the net. Player A will have to retrieve every shot thrown and kill as many shot as possible. If the shot can t be kill just execute a net shot. Feeder must make player A move as fast as possible by throwing the shuttle as fast as possible. - Player A will benefit by improving his/her speed at the front court. In the game of doubles, the pair which attacks more will normally dominate the game because they are forcing their opponent to defend every shot executed. -The front player plays an important role by setting up the rally into an attacking position. It is important for the front player to move fast so that the front court is fully guarded. -20 shuttles x 6 sets (30 seconds rest between each set) Copyright Page 6
Drill 4: Multiple Shuttle Drill (Drive Side to Side) - In this drill, the feeder will hit the shuttle randomly to 2 corners of the court which is the left and right side of the court. The shots given to player A should be hit to 2 corners of the court randomly with pace. - Player A will have to move randomly side to side to drive back the shuttle given by the feeder. - In the game of doubles, the drive shot is often played. Players need to be able to move around the court to retrieve and execute the drive shot in order for them to control the game. -This drill will help the player improve speed to move side to side smoothly and sharpened the drive skills in the game shuttles x 6 sets (30 seconds rest between each set) Copyright Page 7
Drill 5: Multiple Shuttle Drill (Smashing) - The feeder in this drill will feed the shuttles randomly to the rear court. Player A will need to anticipate and smash every single shot given by the feeder. -The faster the feeder feed the shuttle, the better the drill will be because player A will have to move and smash as fast as possible. - This multiple shuttle drill will benefit player A by improving his/her consistency and speed of smashing. In doubles, opponent will defend by sending the shuttle back to the rear court most of the time. Player who executes the attack should be able to continue attacking so that they can maintain the pressure given to their opponents. -This drill will also help develop follow up ability so that players will be able to kill their opponent effectively shuttles x 4sets (30 seconds rest between each set) Copyright Page 8
Drill 6: Multi Shuttle Drill (Drive) - In this drill, the feeder will continuously feed the shuttle to player A's body. Feeder should feed to any parts of player A's body but mostly on the upper part. -The faster the shuttle is fed, the better it is. Player A must retrieve and drive all the shuttles. While driving the shuttle, Player A should put his/her hand up so that it is easier for them to anticipate every shot. - In doubles game, once again drive shots are very important. This drill will benefit by improving hand speed and also accuracy of the drive shot shuttles x 6 sets (30 seconds rest between each set) Copyright Page 9
Drill 7: The Drive and Net Drill -Player A in this drill will move 4 sides in the court which is the 2 side courts and the front court. In this drill, player A will shadow drive at the side of the court and comes in front to the net to put in the shuttle thrown by the feeder. -Player A will start from the backhand side corner, point 1 and then rush to the front forehand corner, point 2 to net the shuttle. And then player A should recover to the center and go to the forehand drive shadow at point 3 followed by going into the backhand net corner point 4. -The feeder in this drill will throw the shuttles to 2 front corners on the front court. Feeder should wait for the player to reach the center of the court before throwing the shuttle to the front. The height of the shuttle thrown should be just nice for a net shot. -The benefit of this drill is to enable the player to move smoothly in the game. In doubles, opponent seldom clear the shuttle to the rear court in order to avoid attacking shots. It is therefore important for the player to be able to move randomly side to side and also to the front in order to retrieve opponent s shots. -It can also sharpen the net skill as player practice to perfect every single net shot in this drill. It can also improve singles play as the player is moving in 4 different directions in the court. -10 shuttles x 6 sets (30 seconds rest between each set) Copyright Page 10
Start with a backhand shadow corner. Forehand shadow comes next after the backhand net shot. Copyright Page 11
Drill 8: The Defend Drill - Player A will stand at the center to defend the shuttle thrown by the feeder. The feeder will sometimes throw the shuttle to the front court to let player A retrieve it. -While defending, player A must also get ready to lunge forward to retrieve the front shot. Player A must keep his racket up while defending and also keep his body bending down consistently to avoid from being flat footed. -While getting ready to retrieve, it is best to bounce a little bit with the support of both ankles so that it will be easier for player A to move front and back. -This drill is beneficial by improving player s defensive skills. In a game, players who have a strong defensive skill will gain an advantage by tiring the offensive opponent and giving them a hard time to finish the rally. It is therefore important for the player to defend bravely in order to pressure their opponent. -20 shuttles x 6 sets (30 seconds rest between each set) Copyright Page 12
The feeder will throw the shuttle into the player s body and player A must be able to defend every shot thrown. Feeder will throw the shuttle forward sometimes. Player A must lunge forward in order to retrieve the front shots. Copyright Page 13
Drill 9: Defensive Chair Drill -Player A will defend in this drill but this time it is a slightly different one with a chair placed behind Player A. - Player B will stand at the rear court to smash and player C will wait at the front court to anticipate any floating shots. However, player B can t lob the shuttle because there is a chair blocking player A from moving to the rear court. -Player A must defend every single attacking shot given by player B. The shuttle retrieved must be flat enough and shouldn t be floating in order to avoid player C to intercept the shot. -This drill will sharpen Player s defensive skills as it is designed based on a real game situation. In a match, the opponents who are attacking will normally have a formation of 1 standing behind and 1 standing at the front court. Players who have strong defensive skills will have an advantage in sustaining the rally and even winning it. -A chair is put behind player A to avoid player A going behind while defending as this will cause player A to become much more defensive than before. -In a real game, players who defend really deep in their court will have a disadvantage if their opponent suddenly dropped the shuttle to the front court. It will be hard for the player to recover and retrieve the opponent s shots in time. - 5 minutes x 3 sets (30 seconds rest between each set) Copyright Page 14
While defending, racket must be consistently up so that the shuttle can be retrieved earlier. The chair is placed behind player A to prevent him from retreating too deep while defending. Copyright Page 15
