The weekend begins with LA Tech taking on North Texas at 7 p.m. Friday in the TAC before the Lady Techsters welcome UAB to Ruston for a 1 p.m. match Sunday. Sunday will officially mark Tech s annual Dig Pink match which is part of The Side-Out Foundation s October event that brings together volleyball players across the country to raise funds for breast cancer research. The first 150 fans at Sunday s match against the Blazers will receive a free Breast Cancer Awareness bracelet. There will also be a donation box at the entrance to the TAC for both Friday and Sunday s matches with all proceeds going toward Wiggin Out. LA Tech enters Friday s match against the Mean Green with a 6-11 overall record with the Lady Techsters in search of their first C-USA victory of the season. On Friday, the Lady Techsters will face a North Texas team that is ranked third in the league standings with a 3-1 mark in C-USA and an 11-8 overall record. In Sunday s showdown with the Blazers, LA Tech will battle a UAB team that comes in with a 7-13 overall record and 0-6 mark in league play. STAT LEADERS Offensively, LA Tech is led by redshirt sophomore Marta Monne who returned from injury last week to record seven kills against the Blue Raiders. Monne has totaled 142 kills (2.96 per set) through 15 matches, but the Lady Techsters also have additional weapons with Helena Gunnarsdottir, Angela Papach and Alexa Lister all over the century mark in kills heading into the weekend. At the net, the Lady Techsters have combined to total 96 blocks with Alexa Lister accounting for almost a third of those alone with 30 as a freshman. Hannah McRee is second on the team with 28, while Natalie Leui continues to perform well for LA Tech in her first season with 23 blocks. Junior libero Lala Aviles enters Friday s matchup against North Texas as LA Tech s leader in service aces with 21 on the season, a mark that also ranks her sixth in Conference USA. The seven upperclassmen (2 seniors, 5 juniors) on this year s roster make the 2015 Lady Techsters the most experienced squad since the 2010 season. THREE LADY TECHSTERS RETURN AFTER 100+ KILL SEASONS LA Tech returns three players from last season s team (Angela Papach, Helena Gunnarsdóttir, Adria Morales) that recorded at least 100 kills over the course of the 2014 season. Gunnarsdóttir totaled 149 a season ago in her first season at Tech after transferring from Lee College. The Iceland native averaged 1.60 kills per set, while also recording 128 digs and 25 blocks for the Lady Techsters in Papach ranked second on the team last year with 193 kills and 1.99 per set, while also totaling 35 blocks (2 solo, 33 assists) as a sophomore. TECH TO HOST HOME INVITATIONAL FOR 3 RD STRAIGHT YEAR For the third straight season, Louisiana Tech is set to host the Lady Techster Invitational with ULM, Southern and Lamar set to visit Ruston for the two-day tournament in September. C-USA VOLLEYBALL GAINS SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE Due to the gaining popularity of the sport and the continued success of the league s 13 volleyball members, Conference USA has launched a Twitter account solely dedicated to #CUSAVB. WKU LOOKS TO DEFEND TITLE Following a share of the C-USA regular season crown and a C-USA tournament title during its inaugural season in the league, WKU made its eighth appearance in the NCAA tournament, facing Iowa State in The Lady Toppers only lost one league match en route to their titles, and the squad has been tabbed to repeat in the C-USA Volleyball Preseason Poll, where it collected 163 points in votes as selected by the league s 13 head coaches.
