4 Solid Spring Sparks High Hopes For Panthers UWM looks to make mark in region and nation, return to NCAAs The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women s volleyball team knows it will once again have a big target on its back when the 2006 Horizon League season begins in September. After all, the Panthers have won the last three Horizon League regular season titles and have posted a record in regular season league matches since But, if the results and progress from the recently completed spring season are any indication, the Panthers have their sights set much higher than winning the Horizon League. I think our team knows that they should do well in the Horizon League, but I think they are hoping to look beyond the league, UWM head coach Kathy Litzau said. This group wants to be one of the best teams in the region and then compete against the best teams in the country. I think this spring helped give us the vision that it is possible. UWM s two biggest spring highlights came on the final two weekends of the schedule. In their own tournament, the Panthers beat Northwestern, UIC, UW-Green Bay and a team of UWM alums to claim the unofficial tournament title. Then, the next weekend in Aurora, Ill., UWM knocked off Dayton, Marquette and Iowa while falling in tight matches to Big 10 powers Minnesota and Purdue. Plus, before those two tournaments, the Panthers pushed Wisconsin to four games on its home floor. It was a defining time over the last two weeks of the spring, and we were extremely successful, Litzau said. A lot of the matches were very competitive and we came up big down the stretch. And, in the matches we lost to Purdue and Minnesota, they had to step up and win those matches we did not back down. It is always nice to beat conference opponents and rivals, but we also got the chance to show we could compete against the best teams in the Big 10. A lot of people will say it is just the spring, but everyone is still competing and we fared very well. The spring season also saw the Panthers develop a number of different options in the positions that figure to see the biggest battles for playing time in the fall. While UWM seems set in the middle with seniors Cheryl Hegemann (All-Horizon League) and Sarah Moore (AVCA Honorable Mention All- Region), a growing list of players are battling for time on the outside. Melissa David, Monica Ferguson and Kelley Olson lead the list of candidates for one outside spot, while Jamie Gabrielsen and Nicole Vilter both shined on the right side in the spring season. Things have definitely gotten very competitive and a lot of people are stepping up, Litzau said. We have a lot of options Page 4 Milwaukee Volleyball 2006 Season Prospectus on the outside, and all of those options have improved from last fall until now. It was a really good spring for everyone. I ve always thought of the spring as a chance to train in position, but also step in to other spots. It helps everyone s experience and we really get the chance to see people blossom. Junior Leanne Felsing appears to be the odds-on favorite to take over the setter role from Melissa Lange, who graduated after earning All-Horizon League honors in each of the past two seasons. Felsing was UWM s main setter during the spring campaign and excelled in that role. Freshman Kellye Zaporski should provide competition for Felsing this fall. Meanwhile, UWM also finds itself loaded in the back row, with reigning Horizon League Co-Newcomer of the Year Becky Peters leading the list of defensive specialists. Peters set a single-season UWM record for digs last season. She is joined by junior Breit Nelson, who has played in a defensive specialist role for the past two seasons. Plus, UWM will add freshman Lauren Felsing for the fall, giving Litzau plenty of options in the back row. Our backcourt defense should be very good. Becky obviously proved herself and it is her position to lose. But Lauren Felsing is a great defensive player. Plus, Breit played well this spring, Litzau said. I can definitely see us having two or three defensive specialists see time on the floor. I am really excited about how good we can be defensively, and that in turn will help our passing and our offense. The other new addition to the roster this fall will be freshman middle hitter Maddie Sueppel. With Hegemann and Moore ahead of Sueppel on the list of middles, it would seem unlikely she would crack the rotation this season. But, Litzau seems to think she ll find a way to get Sueppel on the floor. Maddie is the one true hitter in our recruiting class, but she is a middle where it would seem like we are set, Litzau said. Yet, she is one of the best middles we have ever recruited. I ve always had the philosophy of putting our best six or seven players on the floor, and there will be a lot of competition in the battle for getting on the floor regularly. UWM has not released its 2006 regular-season schedule yet, but much of it is complete and it will provide plenty of challenges. In fact, each weekend of the non-league slate will provide a chance for Milwaukee to battle at least one NCAA Tournament-caliber team. UWM will open the season with tournaments at Illinois and Alabama before hosting its own Panther Invitational, which is expected to include Wisconsin. The Panthers also then have a non-league match the next weekend at Louisville, which. The Badgers finished 10th in last year s AVCA poll, while Louisville finished 11th.

5 Kathy Litzau has started her second decade as the head coach at UWM right where she left off the first one. Entering her 14th season as the head coach at UWM, Litzau s resume is full of successful notes. She has been named the Horizon League Coach of the Year six times while leading the Panthers to seven Horizon League regular season titles. UWM has also won at least 20 matches eight times under Litzau and advanced to the NCAA Tournament five times. Plus, she has 118 Horizon League victories, by far the most of any active Horizon League coach. Litzau s teams have even found a way to increase their level of success in recent seasons. Over the last nine campaigns, Litzau has directed her team to a remarkable record in league matches, which adds up to an astounding.890 winning percentage. The Panthers have also won 95 of their last 106 home matches. Litzau led the Panthers to yet another stellar season in UWM won its third-straight Horizon League regular-season title and claimed non-league wins over Charlotte, Virginia Tech and Georgetown. Two Panthers earned all-league honors while Becky Peters was the League s Co-Newcomer of the Year. The 2004 season saw Litzau lead the Panthers to the Horizon League regular season title and earn league coach of the year honors. Standout Karen Fruit won Horizon League Player of the Year honors - the fifth Panther to win the award under Litzau - while Leanne Felsing was named the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year. As has often been the case for the Panthers under Litzau, the team showed a steady improvement as the season progressed. Thanks to a difficult non-league slate and playing with just one senior on the roster, UWM opened play 4-5. The Panthers then recovered to win 15 of their next 16 matches - including a string of 11-straight victories - and earned the top seed for the league tournament. But, as the career numbers show, success is nothing new for Litzau and the Panthers. The 2003 season saw UWM win 25 matches and claim the regular season Horizon League championship. The 25 wins tied a school record for victories - something accomplished four times under Litzau. And the individual honors also rolled in, as Litzau was named the league s coach of the year and Lindsey Spoden won league player of the year honors. After starting the season 7-0, and with wins in 10 of its first 11 games, the Panthers continued that pace in the league season. In fact, UWM won its first 10 league matches and wound up winning 13 of its 14 regular season league contests. In that span, Litzau recorded her 200th career win with a victory at Loyola, making her only the second coach at UWM to win 200 Division I games in any sport. Litzau s success at UWM has come in nearly every way imaginable. Kathy Litzau Head Coach 14th Season at UWM The 2002 season marked one of Litzau s finest coaching jobs. She took a team that started 1-7 and was slowed by injuries all season long and led it to a mark and an NCAA Tournament berth. In fact, the Panthers won 18 of their final 23 matches. Tari Boutin wound up being named the League s Player of the Year and Spoden won League Tournament MVP honors. Under Litzau, the Panthers have also won the League Tournament title on their home floor (2001), set a school-record for a winning streak (2000) and claimed at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament (1999 and 2000), the only Horizon League school ever to do so in volleyball. The Panthers have also had the chance to play in some of the best volleyball environments in the country, including Wisconsin, Minnesota and Northern Iowa. And, Litzau has led her team across the country, playing in tournament and post-season play from coast-tocoast, including a trip to Charlotte and Virginia Tech this past season. UWM s schedule has also consistently boasted some of the top names in volleyball. Two years ago, the Panthers faced Washington, ranked #1 in the country much of the season. Litzau has coached plenty of other players to league and regional honors. Two other Panthers have been named League Players of the Year - Dallenbach in 2000 and Sue Raschka in And, both Spoden and Fruit have earned honorable mention All-America honors. Plus, Litzau was named the AVCA Region VI Coach of the Year in Litzau s recruiting classes have also paid dividends. In 2000, Spoden was named the league newcomer of the year and the Midwest Region Freshman of the Year. In total, Litzau has coached five league newcomers of the year and 13 players on the league all-newcomer team. Litzau came to UWM after an impressive start as a player and assistant coach. As a player at Notre Dame, Litzau was a four-year letterwinner. She was a captain and was named the team s most valuable player as a senior. She led the Fighting Irish to an NCAA Tournament appearance as a junior. During her sophomore year, she represented the West at the 1987 U.S. Olympic Festival. After graduation, Litzau was named an All-American, a member of the all-rookie team and a 1992 USVBA National Champion. Litzau then got her coaching career rolling as an assistant coach at Illinois in While with the Illini, she received her master s degree in kinesiology. She also served as an assistant at Wisconsin in 1992 and at Michigan State in the spring of 1993 before being named the head coach at UWM. Litzau has also been involved in volleyball off-the-court, working as a color analyst at the MCC Tournament and the NCAA Regionals. A native of Naperville, Ill., Litzau attended Naperville Central High School, where she lettered in three sports. Litzau was married in May, She and her husband, Steve, make their home in Greendale. The couple has three daughters, Lauren (7), Danielle (6) and Kayce (4), and a son, Nicholas (2). Milwaukee Volleyball 2006 Season Prospectus Page 5
