The 54-hole event will be contested at Mission Hills Country Club on the renowned Dinah Shore Tournament Course, home of one of the LPGA Tour s majors, the ANA Inspiration, formerly known as the Kraft Nabisco Championship. The nine-team field will play 18 holes on the par-72, 6,270-yard layout each of the three days, following a practice round on Sunday. The Aztecs received the No. 2 seed are scheduled to tee off with No. 5 Fresno State and No. 8 Wyoming in the second group on Monday, starting at 7:45 a.m. PT, while the pairings for the final two rounds with be based on team standings. A live scoring link will be available courtesy of Golfstat on GoAztecs.com. The MW Championship returns to Mission Hills for the sixth straight season after a two-year run in 2011 and 2012 at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz., just outside of Phoenix. During the 2009 and 2010 campaigns, the event was held at the Black Horse Golf Club in Seaside, Calif., near Monterey. In the league s 18-year history, the championships have also been conducted in three other states: Oregon, Utah and New Mexico. SDSU Lineup Avg. Low 54 Best Finish Sara Kjellker T-3rd Gioia Carpinelli T-2nd Mila Chaves T-9th Fernanda Escauriza T-6th Georgia Lacey T-17th Aztec Lineup Seventh-year San Diego State head coach Leslie Spalding will accompany five golfers to the Coachella Valley next week, featuring freshmen Sara Kjellker (Hollviken, Sweden) and Gioia Carpinelli (Boppelsen, Switzerland), seniors Mila Chaves (Asuncion, Paraguay) and Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.), along with sophomore Fernanda Escauriza (Asunción, Paraguay). Escauriza will be looking to defend her individual title from a year ago, when she became the Aztecs first-ever medalist in a conference tournament after shooting a 6-under 210 to win by two strokes. In addition, Chaves will has found success in her two previous MW Championship appearances, falling on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff as a freshman in 2015, before finishing a solo third the following year during her sophomore campaign. Lacey also finds herself in the thick of the fight for the fourth straight season, posting her best placement in 2016 with a 16th-place effort, while Kjellker and Carpinelli are each making their conference tournament debuts. SDSU At The MW Championship Despite boasting individual medalist Fernanda Escauriza and setting a program record for lowest 54-hole team score in a conference tournament with a collective 7-over 871, the Aztecs finished in second place at the Mountain West Championship for the second year in a row last season, finishing three strokes behind UNLV (+4). SDSU also came up short in its quest for a second consecutive league title the previous year after finishing second at the 2016 Mountain West Championship. Despite shooting a combined 2-under 286 during the final round, a school standard for 18 holes in a conference tournament, the Scarlet and Black landed in the runner-up spot at 22- over 886, nine strokes in back of champion UNLV. In 2015, the Aztecs captured the first MW championship in program history after topping New Mexico by five shots. Despite falling on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff, Mila Chaves shattered the SDSU record for best individual score in a 54-hole league tournament after firing a 6-under 210, which was ultimately matched by fellow compatriot Escauriza last year. With her first-place tie in regulation, Chaves equaled the finish of Christine Wong, who also lost on the fourth hole of a playoff in In addition to its conference crown that season, San Diego has finished fifth at the MW tourney on seven occasions, second four times, third and seventh twice, while placing fourth and sixth once each. In 2014, the Aztecs landed in a three-way tie for third after occupying the fifth position in SDSU also posted back-to-back fifth-place performances in 2010 and 2011 to go along with another third-place effort in In addition, the Scarlet and Black wound up seventh in both 2008 and 2009, following a sixth-place result in The program was also fifth in 2003, 2005 and 2006, fourth in Mountain West 4/10 4/13 SDSU Record Team Rankings Golfstat Golfweek vs. In San Diego State UNLV San José State New Mexico Fresno State Colorado State Nevada Wyoming Boise State to go with consecutive runner-up efforts in 2001 and The Aztecs were disqualified in the inaugural tournament in 2000, after two players turned in incorrect scorecards in the third and final round. The Competition Five of SDSU s opponents at the MW Championship are among the top 100 teams in the latest Golfstat rankings released April 10. Defendng champion UNLV is the highest rated squad in the field, landing in the 41st spot this week, while San José State checks in at No. 58, followed by New Mexico (65), Fresno State (80) and Colorado State (84). In addition, SDSU will lock horns with Nevada (129), Colorado State (120), Wyoming (138) and Boise State (175), while the two remaining MW members, Air Force and Utah State, do not sponsor women s golf programs. The Aztecs own a 6-2 record in head-to-head results against four conference foes during the campaign, including 2-0 marks against New Mexico and Fresno State. SDSU also maintained the upper hand in its lone encounter with San José State, but came out on the wrong side of standings in two of three tournaments competing against UNLV. Conversely, the Scarlet and Black has not faced Colorado State, Nevada, Wyoming or Boise State. Individually, six of the top-15 finishers return from last year s conference championship, including SDSU s Fernanda Escauriza, who captured medalist honors, while San José State s Abegail Arevalo landed three shots behind in the third spot, followed by UNLV s Elizabeth Prior, who tied for fourth. Fellow Rebel teammate Mackenzie Raim (12th) is also back in the mix, along with New Mexico s Ingrid Gutierrez (T-13th) and Colorado State s Katrina Prendergast (T-15th). UNLV freshman Polly Mack, who enters the week as the topranked golfer in the MW is also expected to contend, along with teammate Nastasia Kossacky, the Aztecs Sara Kjellker, Gioia Carpinelli and Mila Chaves, Fresno State s Mimi Ho and Brigitte Thibault, SJ- SU s Alexandra Cooper and Franziska Friedrich, as well as UNM s Darian Zachek and CSU s Ellen Secor, all of whom are among the league s top 20 players in Golfstat s head-to-head rankings. Backspin: 2017 MW Championship San Diego State s Fernanda Escauriza captured the individual title at the 2017 Mountain West Championship after shooting a 2-under-par 70 during the final round at Mission Hills Country Club. With her total, the Aztec freshman completed the event with a 54-hole total of 6-under 210 to become the program s first-ever medalist in a conference tournament. Fernanda played extremely well in all three rounds, said SDSU head coach Leslie Spalding. She told me this course reminded her a lot of her home track in Paraguay because of its firmness. It was certainly fun to watch her this week, and she has the ability to accomplish anything she wants in golf. As a team, the Aztecs landed in the runner-up spot behind UNLV for the second year in a row after logging a 5-over 293 during the final round on the par-72, 6,270-yard Dinah Shore Tournament Course. SDSU led by as many as three strokes early on the front nine, but was unable to withstand the Rebels surge after the turn. With their result, the Aztecs finished three shots in back of the leader at 7-over 871 for the week, while San José State (+12) took third, followed by Fresno State (+25) and New Mexico (+31). Escauriza, who began the day in a tie for second on the individual leaderboard, got off to a wobbly start after notching a pair of bogeys on the par-4 third and the par-3 fifth following a birdie-4 at No. 2. However, the soon-to-be champion played spot-free golf the rest of the way, notching three birdies on the back nine, including a successful drain on the par-5, 485-yard 18th to win by two shots over San José State s My Leander, who wound up at 4-over 212. Sirene Blair also notched a top-10 placement in her final MW Championship appearance for SDSU, finishing alone in eighth at 3-over 219 on the heels of a 74. The Aztec senior found birdies elusive after circling her scorecard at No. 2, but a steady diet of 14 pars was

Haleigh Krause also matched Blair with a 74, highlighted by an eagle-3 at No. 2. The SDSU junior was cruising after reeling off six consecutive pars; however, a bogey at the par-5 ninth would foreshadow trouble on the back nine. Despite carding six additional pars after the turn, Krause was undone by three straight bogeys on No , finishing the week in 11th place with a 5-over 221. In addition, Georgia Lacey had her final-round 75 count toward the Aztecs team score in the final round. The Aztec junior opened with nine straight pars, but quickly ran out of steam thanks to four bogeys on her first five holes after the turn. Lacey regrouped with three pars and a birdie on the par-4 No. 16, which ranked as the fourth-toughest hole of the tournament. With her spurt, the Torrey Pines High alum managed to move up one spot into 17th at 9-over 225. Rounding out the SDSU delegation was Natalie Vivaldi, who slipped three places into a tie for 13th at 7-over 223 after settling for a final-round 77. The Aztec senior sank three birdies on the day, the second-highest total on the team, but four bogeys and two doubles hastened her drop. Mountain West History 101 New Mexico dominated the first four years of the Mountain West Women s Golf Championship, claiming the team title by at least 11 shots in each of the first three seasons before coming back to defeat UNLV in 2003 by one stroke. The Rebels got their revenge against UNM over the next three years, edging the Lobos by two shots in both 2004 and 2005 to capture the conference crown before winning by five strokes in After TCU registered a oneshot victory over Brigham Young in 2007, New Mexico topped the Cougars by 19 strokes on its home course in the 2008 installment to usher in a three-year reign, which included two straight decisions over runner-up TCU in 2009 and However, the Horned Frogs managed to capture two consecutive championships of their own in 2011 and 2012 before bolting for the Big 12. The MW tournament witnessed a return to form in the following two seasons as UNLV and New Mexico captured titles in 2013 and 2014, respectively, before the Aztecs busted that oligarchy in In 2015, San Diego State became the first team other than New Mexico, UNLV and former conference member TCU to capture the MW Championship. However, the Rebels have taken home the last two crowns and will be vying to complete their first three-peat since Prior to 2015, New Mexico and UNLV owned at least a share of all 12 MW championship records. However, the Aztecs Mila Chaves etched her name into the history books that season, opening with a 66 to set a conference tournament standard for lowest first-round score. Last year, SDSU s Fernanda Escauriza became the first freshman medalist out of four competitors to complete all three rounds of the MW Championship below par ( ). Seven different schools have had a player collect medalist honors, including New Mexico (2001, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2015), UNLV (2004, 2005, 2006, 2011, 2016), Wyoming (2000, 2009) Colorado State (2002), TCU (2012), Fresno State (2014) and San Diego State (2017). The first Mountain West Championship took place in 2000 at the Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, Utah. The tournament then moved to Sunriver Resort in central Oregon over the next five seasons; however, the first round of the 2003 event was conducted at the Awbrey Glen Golf Course in Bend, Ore., due to inclement weather. The tournament has also been played at the Entrada at Snow Canyon Resort in St. George ( ), the UNM Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M. (2008), the Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, Calif. ( ) and the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz. ( ) Highlights Despite the loss of four-time all-mw honoree Sirene Blair and facing a schedule replete with high-level competition, San Diego State enjoyed another successful season in , posting top- 10 team finishes in seven of nine stroke-play events, including a pair of fourth-place performances at the Bruin Wave Invitational and Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational. The Aztecs opened the season last September at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., where Gioia Carpinelli, Sara Kjellker and Georgia Lacey all tied for 25th, helping the Scarlet and Black finish fifth in the team standings. SDSU came up short in its quest for three-peat at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Wolcott, Colo, settling for a fifth-place tie, while Lacey tied for 17th on the individual leaderboard at 3-over 219. The Aztecs faced some robust competition in their next two events, tying for 12th at Northwestern University s Windy City Collegiate Classic, just outside of Chicago, Ill., before landing in the ninth spot at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas. Kjellker held her own in the latter tournament, tying for sixth at 2-over 218 for her first top-10 finish in a Scarlet and Black uniform. SDSU wrapped up its fall slate with four individuals competing at the UC Irvine Invitational, as Fernanda Escauriza tied for sixth at 2-over 218, while Daniela Anastasi posted her first top-20 placement as an Aztec, tying for 14th at 6-over 222. During the winter break, Chaves won the South American Women s Amateur Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she carded a collective 6-under 282 to edge Colombia s Silvia Garces (-5) by one stroke, chipping in for a birdie-3 on the final hole of the tournament to erase a two-shot deficit. For the second year in a row, SDSU opened its second semester schedule in early February at Ohio State s Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., finishing 18th in an almost-exclusive field that featured 13 top-30 squads. Two Aztecs received Mountain West Women s Golfer of the Week honors for their efforts in SDSU s next two tournaments. Kjellker tied for seventh at the Bruin Wave Invitational, topping seven players ranked in the Golfstat top 80. As a team, the Aztecs were the only non-pac-12 member to finish in the top six, landing in the fourth position. Two weeks later, Carpinelli collected the conference s weekly award after tying for second with an even-par 216 at the Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, helping the Scarlet and Black to a fourth-place standing. Shortly thereafter, the Aztecs returned stateside to conduct their sixth annual home tournament, the SDSU March Mayhem, which featured a match-play sequence for the fourth year in a row, following an opening round of stroke play. All 12 schools in the competitive field were ranked among the Golfstat top 60 entering the week, as San Diego State finished sixth with a 1-2 ledger, dropping matches to Texas and UCLA, sandwiched around a victory over Colorado. Individually, Kjellker tied for third in the stroke play; Chaves and Carpinelli posted 2-1 records in their respective matches, while Lacey went Kjellker collected her second MW Women s Golfer of the Week award after tying for eighth at The Bruzzy Challenge outside of Dallas, Texas. Playing in chilly and windy conditions, Kjellker shot a 10-over 226 in tournament where none of the 80 participants finished below par. At San Diego State s annual scholar-athlete banquet on April 11, the Aztec women s golf program was presented with the award for highest team grade point average for the 2017 fall semester. Just A Chip Shot Away The winner of next week s Mountain West Championship earns an automatic bid to the NCAA regional tournament. If SDSU claims the MW title, it will head to the NCAA regionals, May 7-9, in either Stanford, Calif., Austin, Texas, Madison, Wis., or Tallahassee, Fla. The trip to the NCAAs would be the team s eighth in the last nine years after three individuals, Christine Wong, Emma Henrikson and Paige Spiranac, were invited to compete in the Central Regional in Each of the four regional tournaments will include 18 schools, along with six individuals not on those qualifying teams. The participants will be selected by the NCAA women s golf committee and announced later this month on the Golf Channel. The top six squads and the three highest finishing individuals not on those teams from each region will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 18-23, in Stillwater, Okla. Head Coach Leslie Spalding Leslie Spalding, who was hired in August 2011, is in her seventh season as head coach of the Aztecs. Since her arrival on Montezuma Mesa, Spalding has guided SDSU to nine team tournament titles, including the 2015 Mountain West Championship, which marked the team s first-ever conference crown. For her efforts, the Billings, Mont., native was named MW Women s Golf Coach of the Year. During her tenure, Spalding s players have garnered 16 all-conference accolades, including Emma Henrikson, who became the team s first-ever All-American after receiving honorable mention in In addition, Spalding s charges have excelled in the classroom, earning 19 all-academic honors from the MW to go with nine scholar-athlete certificates. Spalding played on the LPGA Tour from 1996 to 2005, competing in 215 events with seven top-10 finishes while earning more than $600,000 in prize money. After completing her playing career, she served as the head women s golf coach at Montana State from As a collegian, Spalding attended the University of Alabama on a golf scholarship from 1987 to 1991 and received her bachelor s degree in telecommunication/film with a minor in marketing in 1992.
