The 54-hole event will be conducted at Mission Hills Country Club on the famed Dinah Shore Tournament Course, home of one of the LPGA Tour s majors, the ANA Inspiration, formerly known as the Kraft Nabisco Championship. The nine-team field will play 18 holes on the par-72, 6,270-yard track each of the three days, following a practice round on Sunday. The Aztecs received the No. 2 seed are slated to tee off with No. 5 Nevada and No. 8 Wyoming in the second group on Monday, starting at 7:45 a.m. PT, while the pairings for the final two rounds with be based on team standings. A live scoring link will be available courtesy of Golfstat on GoAztecs.com. The MW Championship returns to Mission Hills for the fifth straight season after a two-year run in 2011 and 2012 at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz., just outside of Phoenix. During the 2009 and 2010 campaigns, the event was held at the Black Horse Golf Club in Seaside, Calif., near Monterey. In the league s 18-year history, the championships have also been conducted in three other states: Oregon, Utah and New Mexico. SDSU Lineup Avg. Low 54 Best Finish Sirene Blair nd Georgia Lacey T-2nd Fernanda Escauriza T-15th Haleigh Krause T-14th Natalie Vivaldi T-5th Aztec Lineup Sixth-year San Diego State head coach Leslie Spalding will accompany five golfers to the Palm Springs area next week, featuring senior Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah), junior Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.), freshman Fernanda Escauriza (Asunción, Paraguay), junior Haleigh Krause, (Eugene, Ore.) and senior Natalie Vivaldi (Oceanside, Calif.). Blair will be making her fourth and final appearance at the MW Championship, while Lacey finds herself in the thick of the fight for the third consecutive season. In addition, Krause will be competing at the conference tournament for the second year in a row, joining first-time participants Escauriza and Vivaldi. Blair occupies the 50th spot nationally in the latest Golfstat Cup standings, while Lacey enters the week at No. 97. Similarly, a quick look at the most recent Golfweek rankings finds Blair at No. 58, while Lacey checks in at No. 84. SDSU At The MW Championship The Aztecs came up short in their quest for a second consecutive league title last year after finishing second at the 2016 Mountain West Championship. Despite shooting a collective 2-under 286 during the final round, a school record for 18 holes in a conference tournament, SDSU landed in the runner-up spot at 22-over 886, nine strokes behind champion UNLV. In 2015, the Aztecs captured the first MW championship in program history after topping New Mexico by five shots. Despite falling on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff, Mila Chaves shattered the Aztec record for best individual score in a 54-hole league tournament after firing a 6-under 210, surpassing Jenna Wilson s total of 2-over 215 set in With her first-place tie in regulation, Chaves matched the finish of Christine Wong, who also lost on the fourth hole of a playoff in In 15 previous installments of the MW tournament, SDSU has finished fifth on seven occasions, second three times, third and seventh twice, while placing fourth and sixth once each. In 2014, the Aztecs landed in a three-way tie for third after occupying the fifth position in SDSU also posted back-to-back fifth-place performances in 2010 and 2011 to go along with another third-place effort in In addition, the Scarlet and Black wound up seventh in both 2008 and 2009, following a sixth-place result in The program was also fifth in 2003, 2005 and 2006, fourth in 2004 to go along with consecutive runner-up efforts in 2001 and The Aztecs were disqualified in the inaugural tournament in 2000, after two players turned in incorrect scorecards in the third and final round. Mountain West 4/12 4/12 SDSU Record Team Rankings Golfstat Golfweek vs. In San Diego State San José State UNLV Fresno State Nevada New Mexico Colorado State Wyoming Boise State The Competition Four of SDSU s opponents at the MW Championship are among the top 100 teams in the latest Golfstat rankings released April 12. SDSU is the highest rated squad in the field, landing in the 30th spot this week, while San José State checks in at No. 35, followed by defending champion UNLV (45), Fresno State (70) and Nevada (90). In addition, SDSU will lock horns with New Mexico (108), Colorado State (120), Wyoming (138) and Boise State (175), while the two remaining MW members, Air Force and Utah State, do not sponsor women s golf programs. The Aztecs own a 12-5 record in head-to-head results against six conference foes during the campaign, including a 3-0 mark against San José State. SDSU also possesses an unblemished record this year vs.colorado State (2-0) and Nevada (1-0), while maintaining the upper hand against New Mexico (3-1). In addition, the Scarlet and Black owns a 1-1 split against Fresno State, but has come out on the wrong side in three of four previous encounters with UNLV this season and has not faced Boise State or Wyoming. Individually, eight of the top-10 finishers return from last year s conference championship, including medalist Alexandra Kaui of UNLV, who emerged with a five-stroke victory over Colorado State s Katrina Prendergast, while Rebel teammate Mackenzie Raim took fourth. SD- SU s Sirene Blair (5th) is also back in the mix, joining SJSU s Abegail Arevalo (6th) and UNLV s Harley Dubsky (T-7th), along with Fresno State s Guðrun Björgsvindóttir (T-7th) and Kristin Simonsen (T-10th). San José State senior My Leander, who enters the week as the top-ranked golfer in the MW, is also expected to contend, along with fellow teammate Franziska Friedrich, UNLV s Elizabeth Prior and Alyssa Getty, SDSU s Georgia Lacey and Natalie Vivaldi, as well as Nevada s Mari Nishiura and Fresno State s Mimi Ho, all of whom are among the league s top 15 players in Golfstat s head-to-head rankings. Backspin: 2016 MW Championship San Diego State fell short in its bid for a second straight conference title after finishing second at the 2016 Mountain West Championship on the par-72, 6,291-yard Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club. Despite posting the lowest score of any team in the three-day event with a 2-under-par 286, the Aztecs managed to climb just one spot in the standings, completing the championship with a 54-hole total of 22-over 886. UNLV (+13) took the ceremonial plunge into Poppie s Pond after carding an even-par 288 during the final round to win by nine strokes, while Fresno State (+33) slipped into third behind SDSU, followed by San José State (+42) and New Mexico (+50). For the second straight season and just the third time since the league s inception, the Aztecs had two players finish among the top five individually at the MW Championship. Sophomore Mila Chaves climbed into the third spot at 2-over 218, while junior Sirene Blair vaulted into the fifth position with a combined 5-over 221 after each fired a final-round 69. Chaves was one of just two golfers, along with UNLV s Mackenzie Raim, to complete the final round without a blemish on her scorecard, notching 15 pars and three birdies to jump four places on the leaderboard en route to her second-lowest 18-hole tally of the season. Blair, meanwhile, sank a team-leading six birdies, including three straight on holes 7-9, to catapult 10 places from the previous round. Despite two bogeys on the back nine, the Utah native still managed her highest finish in three MW Championship appearances. Not to be outdone, Emma Henrikson also displayed upward mobility, jumping eight spots into a tie for seventh at 7-over 223. Along with Chaves and Blair, Henrikson was one of just six golfers in the field of

Despite a dearth of birdies on her card, the SDSU senior offset one bogey with the just the second eagle of the tournament on the par-5, 482-yard No. 2. Conversely, Georgia Lacey was not as fortunate, tumbling 13 places into 16th with a final-round 80, which did not count toward the Aztecs final team score. The SDSU sophomore, who entered the day in a tie for third, was unable to recover from three bogeys and two doubles on the front nine, ultimately completing the tournament at 11-over 227. Fellow classmate Haleigh Krause was also unable to advance up the ladder, slipping one notch into a tie for 30th at 16-over 233 on the heels of her second straight 77. Despite two birdies before, Krause was plagued by seven bogeys, including a pair on her final two greens. Mountain West History 101 In 2015, San Diego State became the first team other than New Mexico, UNLV and former conference member TCU to capture the Mountain West Women s Golf Championship. Prior to 2015, New Mexico and UNLV owned at least a share of all 12 MW championship records. However, the Aztecs Mila Chaves etched her name into the history books that season, opening with a 66 to set a conference tournament standard for lowest first-round score. New Mexico dominated the first four years of the MW Championship, claiming the team title by at least 11 shots in each of the first three years before coming back to defeat UNLV in 2003 by one stroke. The Rebels got their revenge against UNM over the next three years, edging the Lobos by two shots in both 2004 and 2005 to capture the conference crown before winning by five strokes in After TCU registered a one-shot victory over Brigham Young in 2007, New Mexico topped the Cougars by 19 strokes on its home course in the 2008 installment to usher in a three-year reign, which included two straight decisions over runner-up TCU in 2009 and However, the Horned Frogs managed to capture two consecutive championships of their own in 2011 and 2012 before bolting for the Big 12. The MW tournament witnessed a return to form in the following two seasons as UNLV and New Mexico captured titles in 2013 and 2014, respectively, before the Aztecs busted that oligarchy a year ago. Six different schools have had a player collect medalist honors, including New Mexico (2001, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2015), UNLV (2004, 2005, 2006, 2011, 2016), Wyoming (2000, 2009) Colorado State (2002, TCU (2012) and Fresno State (2014). The first Mountain West Championship took place in 2000 at the Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, Utah. The tournament then moved to Sunriver Resort in central Oregon over the next five seasons; however, the first round of the 2003 event was conducted at the Awbrey Glen Golf Course in Bend, Ore., due to inclement weather. The tournament has also been played at the Entrada at Snow Canyon Resort in St. George ( ), the UNM Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M. (2008), the Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, Calif. ( ) and the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz. ( ) Highlights Despite the loss of Emma Henrikson, the program s first All-American, and a schedule replete with high-level competition, San Diego State enjoyed another successful season in , posting top-10 team finishes in seven of eight stroke-play tournaments, highlighted by a pair of team titles at the Golfweek Conference Challenge and Meadow Club Intercollegiate. The Aztecs opened the season last September at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., where Sirene Blair finished alone in second place after posting a 13-under 203 to set a school record for lowest 54-hole score. In addition, the SDSU senior established another program standard for 18 holes after carding a 64 in the second round, highlighted by nine birdies. Later that month, the Aztecs returned to the Mountain time zone and successfully defended their crown at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Wolcott, Colo., withstanding a late charge by Denver midway through the final round to win by eight shots at 2-over 866. Senior Natalie Vivaldi tied for fifth place at 2-under 214, highlighted by a personal-best 67 en route to her highest finish as a collegian. In addition, Blair and junior Mila Chaves tied for 10th at 1-over 217, while junior Haleigh Krause tied for 14th with a 3-over 219. SDSU s battled the elements in its final two tournaments of the fall, as inclement weather reduced the Stanford Intercollegiate and Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown to 36 holes each. Georgia Lacey was the Aztecs top finisher in both events, earning Mountain West Women s Golfer of Month honors for October in the process. At Stanford, the SDSU junior tied for second with a 2-under 140, topping 29 individuals ranked in the Golfstat top 100, including four players in the top 10. The Torrey Pines High alum, who led the prestigious event in par-4 scoring (3.83), shot a career-low 4-under 67 in round one, highlighted by a team-best six birdies to go with an eagle-3 on the par-5, 495-yard No. 1 hole. Lacey also recorded a 4-under 140 on the par-72 layout in Las Vegas to tie for 15th on the individual leaderboard. In addition, Blair vaulted 43 places into a tie for 28th with Krause after shooting a final-round 67, helping SDSU to a respectable fourth-place tie in the team standings out of 19 schools. SDSU opened its second semester slate in early February at Ohio State s Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., competing in a stacked field that featured eight top- 30 squads. The Aztecs tied for eighth in the event at 27-over 879, while Blair finished in a four-way tie for seventh with an even-par 213, highlighted by a second-round 66 for her second-lowest 18- hole total of the year. Following a ninth-place standing at the Bruin Wave Invitational, San Diego State captured its second tournament title of the season at the Meadow Club Intercollegiate in Fairfax, Calif., edging runner-up BYU by four strokes. Four Aztecs finished among individual top 15, led by Blair (-1), who tied for fourth, while Lacey (+2) tied for ninth, followed by Vivaldi (T-12th, +4) and freshman Fernanda Escauriza (T-15th, +6). With its result, SDSU has collected two tournament crowns in the same season for the third year in a row, but just the fourth time since the campaign. After a two-week hiatus, the Aztecs conducted their fifth annual home tournament, the SDSU March Mayhem, which featured a match-play format for the third year in a row. In a competitive field that included eight top-40 schools, San Diego State finished eighth with a 1-3 ledger, dropping three matches by a narrow 3-2 margin. The Aztecs were led by Lacey and Vivaldi, who posted 3-1 individual records for the week. At San Diego State s annual scholar-athlete banquet on April 10, the Aztec women s golf program was presented with the award for high team grade point average for the 2016 fall semester. Entering the MW Championship, Blair ranks second in the conference with a scoring average, while Lacey (73.53) checks in at No. 5. Just A Chip Shot Away The winner of next week s Mountain West Championship earns an automatic bid to the NCAA regional tournament. If SDSU claims the MW title, it will head to the NCAA regionals, May 8-10, in either Albuquerque, N.M., Lubbock, Texas, Columbus, Ohio, or Athens, Ga. The trip to the NCAAs would be the team s seventh in the last eight years after three individuals, Christine Wong, Emma Henrikson and Paige Spiranac, were invited to compete in the Central Regional in Each of the four regional tournaments will include 18 schools, along with six individuals not on those qualifying teams. The participants will be selected by the NCAA women s golf committee and will be announced on Thursday, April 27 at 11 a.m. ET (8 a.m. PT) on the Golf Channel. The top six squads and the three highest finishing individuals not on those teams from each region will advance to the NCAA championships, May 19-24, in Sugar Grove, Ill. Head Coach Leslie Spalding Leslie Spalding, who was hired in August of 2011, is in her sixth season as head coach of the Aztecs. A native of Billings, Mont., Spalding played on the LPGA Tour from 1996 to 2005, competing in 215 events with seven top-10 finishes and earning more than $600,000 in prize money. After completing her playing career, she served as the head women s golf coach at Montana State from As a collegian, Spalding attended the University of Alabama on a golf scholarship from 1987 to 1991 and received her bachelor s degree in telecommunication/film with a minor in marketing in In 2016, Spalding was named Mountain West Women s Golf Coach of the Year after guiding SDSU to its first-ever conference championship.
