The previous record of 53 was also set last year on the same day against Oral Roberts. SANTOS SHINES IN OPENER In her first match as a Sooner, two-time junior college All-American (College of Southern Idaho) Eliane Santos posted a double-double with 19 kills and 12 digs for the Sooners. Barnes, the only freshman to play in the match, showed promise adding five digs for the Sooner defense and adding one assist for the Oklahoma offense. SCHMITT EARNS ALL-TOURNEY HONORS Despite not playing in the final match of the Hampton Inn Bama Bash due to injury, Oklahoma junior outside hitter Joanna Schmitt was still selected to the Hampton Inn Bama Bash All Tournament team for her efforts against Indiana and Loyola-Chicago on Friday, Sept. 2. Schmitt hit at an impressive.547 clip in tournament action while pounding 42 kills and collecting 16 digs in two matches. In addition, The preseason All-Big 12 team member pounded a match-high 19 kills against Loyola-Chicago while hitting at an impressive.567 clip, a new career high. Schmitt s previous career high in hitting percentage was.486, set against Oral Roberts last September. Schmitt set a new three-game rally-scoring record with her 19 kills. Schmitt held the previous mark of 18 that was set her freshman season against Drake. WEILAND SERVES UP NEW RECORD Sophomore transfer Sarah Weiland, a Tulane product, broke all sorts of records after serving up nine aces against Loyola-Chicago Friday afternoon. Weiland set an Oklahoma sideout-scoring record as well as a new rally-scoring record Former Sooner Sheena Werling held the rally-scoring record with six aces while Gloria Holcomb held the sideout record with eight. In addition, the Sooners totaled 17 aces which set a new team-rally scoring record. Weiland also set new Big 12 records with her strong performance. She now holds the four-game rally scoring aces record mark in the conference. The previous record was eight and held by Katia Lara of Texas (2000). Currently, Weiland leads all Big 12 players with 15 aces on the season (1.25 per game). NEWCOMER CONTRIBUTION The Sooners have had multiple newcomers who have been strong additions to the Sooner lineup. Sophomore transfers Hannah Sharp (Louisville) and Sarah Weiland (Tulane) have been consistent leading contributors to the Sooners defensively and offensively. Sharp has collected double-digit digs in four matches while Weiland adds 1.07 aces a game and 2.53 KPG. Abbi Owens, a 5-9 outside hitter from Missouri, had been the lone freshman Sooner to receive noticeable playing team. Owens missed most of preseason after suffering a concussion, but made her first collegiate appearance against Loyola where she tallied five kills in two games. Following Loyola, Owens played in all three games against Indiana and collected five digs for the Sooners. SCHMITT SETS NEW CAREER MARK It only took her one match into the 2005 season to break the rally-scoring career record in digs for the Sooners. Junior Joanna Schmitt, a preseason All Big 12 selection, set the new career bench mark of 622 digs after collecting a team-high 13 digs in her first outing of the season (8/27). The Cottage Grove, Wis., native already owns the rallyscoring career mark in kills with a current tally of 990 and two more seasons ahead of her. Additionally, Schmitt is on pace to break the rally-scoring aces mark (73) and needs only 14 more to do so. Schmitt led the team in aces in 2004 after recording 20 over the course of last season. 3 HEAD COACH SANTIAGO RESTREPO Second Season At OU Seventh As Head Coach Career Record: (.610) Familiarity surrounds the OU volleyball program as second year coach Santiago Restrepo enters the 2005 season. A year after leading Oklahoma to its best finish since 1997, Restrepo now returns five starters and has signed an elite class of five newcomers that include a two-time Junior College All-American and four others that will be expected to contribute immediately to the lineup. It is quite clear why excitement and enthusiasm surround the 2005 squad as it enters the second season of the Restrepo era. In his first season at the helm of the Sooner program, he led the 2004 OU squad to a record. No Sooner squad had produced a better record since the 1997 squad that reached the NCAA Tournament. While it was a significant achievement for the rookie Sooner coach, Restrepo was not satisfied with a ninth place conference finish. At the forefront of Restrepo s mind is determination to reach the NCAA Tournament and finish in the upper echelon of the Big 12 Conference. In Restrepo fashion, he has made it clear to his players and others around the league that hard work will be the means to get there. The reigning Conference USA Coach of the Year, Restrepo, left Southern Mississippi to fulfill a dream of coaching in the Big 12. Restrepo completed his third season at USM and led his 2003 team to a program-best 27-6 record. That squad reeled off three winning streaks of at least six matches, including one eight-win string, the longest in school history. Three Golden Eagle players garnered All-Conference USA honors during Restrepo s tenure, including two in the most recently completed season. He left Southern Miss with a record of (.565) and an overall mark of (.638). Prior to coaching at Southern Miss, Restrepo served three seasons ( ) as an assistant coach at Saint Louis University under Marilyn Nolen. A native of Bogota, Colombia, Restrepo served as the women s head coach at East Stroudsburg (Pa.) University from He led the Warriors to a record and a semifinal finish in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in his first season in the league. Also highly involved in the international circuit and USA Volleyball, Restrepo was selected as co-head coach of one of two USA Volleyball under-22 select teams that toured Argentina in June The squads, which included OU junior Joanna Schmitt, traveled Buenos Aires and the surrounding cities competing against the Argentina Youth National Team. 4 RECAPS UTA, 3-0 (9/7) The Oklahoma volleyball team swept UT-Arlington (32-30, 30-26, 30-11) in the team s first appearance in the newly remodeled Howard McCasland Field House Wednesday night. The Sooners pulled from behind to claim game one and took games two and three in the sweep. Highlighting the Oklahoma offensive charge was junior setter Rachel Jackson who led the Sooners to a team hitting percentage of.319 while adding 56 assists, a new three-game rally-scoring record. Jackson broke her own previous record of 46 that she set last year on the exact same date (Sept. 7) against Oral Roberts. In addition to setting an individual record, Jackson led the Sooners to a new three-game rally-scoring team assist record of 57. The previous record of 53 was also set last year against Oral Roberts. For the first time this season, OU had four Sooners with double-digit kills. Headlining the group was junior Eliane Santos, who was making her debut in the Sooner uniform. Santos pounded a match-high 19 kills and added 12 digs to earn the first double-double of her OU career. Santos 19 kills tied teammate Joanna Schmitt s mark for the most kills in a three-game rally-scoring match at OU. Schmitt set the record last weekend against Indiana. Defensively, Hannah Sharp continued to direct the Sooners. The sophomore transfer added double-digit digs for the fourth straight match, collecting a matchhigh 13. The Sooner defense held the Mavericks to a clip of.165, including a.000 hitting percentage in the final game of the match. ALABAMA, 0-3 (9/3) The Oklahoma volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday in a sweep (19-30, 26-30, 6-30) to Alabama at the Hampton Inn Bama Bash in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Crimson Tide earned their third straight Hampton Inn Bama Bash title while Oklahoma dropped its first tournament match under second-year head coach Santiago Restrepo. The Sooners were playing without preseason All Big 12 member Joanna Schmitt, who suffered an injury in Friday s match against Loyola-Chicago. However, the junior outside hitter was still selected to the Hampton Inn Bama Bash All Tournament team for her efforts against Indiana and Loyola-Chicago on Friday. Schmitt hit at an impressive.547 clip in tournament action while pounding 42 kills and collecting 16 digs in two matches. While OU s offense struggled with a.153 hitting percentage against Alabama, the host school was hitting on all cylinders. The Crimson Tide hit.580 for the match, an opponent high under Restrepo at Oklahoma. Highlighting the Sooner offense were sophomores Anna Stadel and Sarah Weiland who tallied 10 kills each for OU. Senior Gabriela Tonon didn t record double-digit kills for the first time this season. The outside hitter was two off the mark after posting eight in Saturday s match. Junior Rachel Jackson and sophomore Julie Chester split the setting duties with Jackson recording 17 assists and Chester besting her with 18. Defensively, sophomore Hannah Sharp continued to show consistency after leading the Sooners in digs for the second straight match. The transfer from Louisville collected eight digs against the Crimson Tide. LOYOLA, 3-1 (9/2) The Oklahoma volleyball team picked up its second straight win of the day with a four-game victory over Loyola-Chicago Friday afternoon at the Hampton Inn Bama Bash in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Sooners took control of the first game, winning 30-22, but stumbled in the second game and dropped one to the Ramblers, OU bounced back to claim the next two games, 30-28, 30-25, and push its overall season mark to 3-0. After suffering injuries to starters Jennifer Adams and Joanna Schmitt, the Sooners battled back with newcomers and upperclassmen taking the reigns. The status of Schmitt and Adams for Saturday s match against Alabama is unknown. One of the Sooners stepping it up was sophomore transfer Sarah Weiland, a former Tulane product, who broke a school record with nine aces in the contest. Weiland broke both the sideout-scoring record as well as the rally-scoring record. Despite suffering a late injury, Schmitt led all players with 23 kills in the contest which also tied the OU record for most kills in a four-game rally-scoring match. Senior outside hitter Gabriela Tonon also continued her stellar play after posting 14 kills in the match. It marked the third straight match for Tonon to post double-digit kills. Newcomer Hannah Sharp (a sophomore from Louisville) continued to impress in the Sooner uniform. The defensive specialist collected a match-high 15 digs, marking her third straight contest to top the double-digit mark. At the net, Oklahoma recorded nine team blocks with the help of sophomore Anna Stadel and junior Laura Tomes, who each posted a match-high three block assists. INDIANA, 3-0 (9/2) The Oklahoma volleyball team swept Indiana (30-28, 30-20, 30-22) Friday morning in the opening round match of the Hampton Inn Bama Bash in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The difference in the game was marked by the offensive production from both squads. The Sooners out hit the Hoosiers.347 to.095 while tallying 50 kills in the contest. For the second straight match, junior outside hitter Joanna Schmitt fueled the Sooners offensively. The preseason All-Big 12 team member pounded a matchhigh 19 kills while hitting at an impressive.567 clip, a new career high. Schmitt s previous career high in hitting percentage was.486, set against Oral Roberts last September. In addition to setting a new career high, Schmitt set a new three-game rally-scoring record with her 19 kills. Schmitt held the previous mark of 18 that was set her freshman season against Drake. Senior outside hitter Gabriela Tonon added double-digit kills for the second straight match this season. Tonon added 11 kills for the Sooner squad that hit a.571 clip in the final set. Sophomore transfer Sarah Weiland (Tulane) also contributed to the Sooner offense with eight kills while hitting at a match-high.583 clip. Junior setter Rachel Jackson continued to show consistency after tallying 41 of the team s 45 assists. Leading the charge defensively was sophomore transfer Hannah Sharp (Louisville) who collected a match-high 10 digs for the Sooners. It marked the second-straight match that Sharp posted double-digit digs. Schmitt also added nine digs for OU. AT TCU, 3-1 (8/27) The Oklahoma volleyball team opened the 2005 season with a strong start after recording a victory over TCU Saturday night inside the University Rec Center in Fort Worth, Texas. The Sooners took three out of four games from the Horned Frogs, winning the opening game and the final two (30-24, 23-30, 30-22, 30-19). It was no surprise that junior outside hitter Joanna Schmitt was the star of the match for Oklahoma. Defensively, Schmitt led the way as well providing a team-high 13 digs for the Sooners. Schmitt now owns the OU rally-scoring mark in digs with 622. Schmitt passed previous record-holder Christina Maynes who had 621 digs. The Sooners were strong offensively, hitting at a.347 clip in the three games they won and finishing with an overall hitting percentage of.278, which is just short of the OU four-game rally scoring record of.289.
