The No.2 seed Oakland women s soccer team (7-5-7, 6-1-2) squares off against No.4 seed Wright State (9-7-2, 5-3-1) for the Horizon League Championship at host site Milwaukee, with a trip to the NCAA tournament on the line. Since joining the Horizon League in 2013, the Golden Grizzlies have appeared in the championship game twice in the last three years. HOW THEY GOT THERE: With the season on the line, Oakland defeated Northern Kentucky in penalty kicks 4-1 to advance to the title game. Oakland s Sydnye Gagner, Cecilie Dokka, Ali Amante and Jamie Horne all scored penalty kick goals, while Emily Zweng stopped three shots. ALL-LEAGUE SELECTIONS: The Golden Grizzlies landed four players on the all-league teams as Oakland s Joan Sieja and Alice Palmer were named to the All-Horizon League first team, while Emily Zweng and Maria Zandi were selected to the all-freshman team, as voted by the league s head coaches. STARTED FROM THE BOTTOM: In September the Golden Grizzlies found themselves ninth in the league standings and winless in their first nine games. Since, the Golden Grizzlies are unbeaten in their last 10 games, going and finished second in the final league standings. In that time, they have outscored opponents 14-2 and have recorded six-consecutive shutouts. A LOOK AT THE RAIDERS: Wright State topped Valparaiso 2-1 in the first round of the tournament then defeated top-seed Milwaukee in penalty kicks 4-3 on Nov. 5 in the Horizon League semifinals. Against the Panthers, the Raiders scored the game-tying goal in the 82nd minute from Natalie Sedlock and converted on penalty kicks from Bryce Hueber, Niki Romero, MacKenzie Hamilton and Mattie Cutts. Oakland defeated Wright State on the road 1-0 on Oct. 10 and owns a all-time record against the Raiders. SHARING IS CARING: Oakland s Joan Sieja got her teammates involved all year finishing second in the Horizon League in assists with seven. She also led the Golden Grizzlies in points with 13. ZWENG EXCELLING: Oakland goalkeeper Emily Zweng has not lost a game in her early career, going In 11 games, Zweng has made 29 saves allowing just two goals, equaling a save percentage of.935 and a goals against average of She was also named Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 5 and notched an assist against Valparaiso, becoming the first Oakland goalkeeper to record an assist in the Division I era. EXTRA TIME: Oakland s 0-0 tie with Northern Kentucky in the conference semifinals (Nov. 5) marked the seventh this season, a school record.
