2 GHSA02 I 2008 STATE FINALS GREAT VOLLEYBALL ACTION! Dear Supporters of GHSA Volleyball: elcome fans of GHSA Volleyball! WI anticipate that the 2008 Georgia High School Association Volleyball Championship matches will be a spectacular event. Throughout Georgia, the level of play continues to rise, and the competitive balance of volleyball programs increases each year. The GHSA wants to thank all those who have planned the event and who will manage this large championship event. Patty Craven (Classes AAAAA and AAAA) and Brooke Kline (Classes AAA and A/AA) have worked hard for many months as GHSA Volleyball Coordinators. Special thanks go to our host, Marietta High School, for its willingness to host this event and for the tireless work of their personnel. Special appreciation also goes to Lynne Malloy and the GHSA Seeding Committee. Besides chairing that committee, Lynne is the GHSA representative at these matches. The GHSA could not put on outstanding championship events without the corporate partners whose signs are seen around this venue. Please support these groups that are interested in assisting high school athletics in a very tangible way. Now, get ready to enjoy the exciting action of championship competition. Vigorously support your school with the highest standards of good sportsmanship that will reflect positively on your school and yourself. Best wishes, Dr. Ralph E. 4 GHSA04 I 2008 STATE FINALS GREAT VOLLEYBALL ACTION! Volleyball Final Four matchups feature state s top teams and lots of depth he battle for Georgia high school volley- state titles is down to the final four Tball teams in each of the sport s four classifications. The state tournament s Final Fours get underway Thursday, with Kell and Marist serving as the host sites. The Class AAAAA and Class AA/A matches will be held at Kell, while the Class AAAA and AAA matches will be played at Marist. Marietta will be the site for all four classifications championship matches, which take place on Saturday. A lot of success and talent is represented in each of the foursomes, as eight teams bring 38 or more wins to the table, and the four teams that ended the regular season atop of the respective coaches polls for each classification each made it the Final Four. With such loaded fields, here is a look at how each classification shapes up. CLASS AAAAA No. 1 Pope (46-3) comes into its semifinal matchup with Kell having won 26 consecutive matches. Sophomore outside hitter Mary Hoey (the classification s leader in kills with 522), junior setter Hannah Farmer and sophomore libero Danielle Thompson heads up a roster that has only one senior and three juniors. The Greyhounds are hoping to win their first state championship. It would mean a lot to the team, just to be able see their hard work pay off, said head coach Bryan Jones. Pope is no stranger to Kell, as both the Longhorns and Greyhounds hail from Area 1. Head coach Gena Ridings s squad features senior leaders in captains Amanda Jones and Taylor O Brien. Kell (41-15) slumped down the stretch before winning three sectional matches to reach the Final Four. Now, the Longhorns hope that playing on their home court will spur them to a victory over the Greyhounds. The other semifinal matchup pits Northview against Lassiter. The Titans (47-6) are the lone 2007 state champion to make it back to the Final Four and head coach Jeff White s team is pinning its hopes of a repeat on the play of Lauren Busing, Ashley Veach and Gaby Smiley. Of Northview s six losses, three came to out-of-state teams, as Chattahoochee is the only Georgia team to defeat the Titans this season, doing so three times. Included in Northview s victories were wins over Kell and Lassiter. Speaking of Lassiter (38-10), the Trojans are the third Area 1 team in the semis, as they finished as the area runner-up to Pope. The Trojans are an imposing squad with 6-foot-5 middle blocker Taylor Montgomery and Melissa Woodall, while Chrissy Ricketts and Katie McCollister are savvy contributors. They will try and help their team avenge two regularseason losses to Northview. CLASS AAAA The favored team going into the semifinals is No. 1 Marist. The War Eagles (35-11) are looking to win their second state championship in three years. I think it [would] mean a tremendous amount, said head coach Anna Bush. Every year we go into a season with that goal in mind. Marist is led by outside hitter Paige Weiland and libero Nicole Choi, as well as fellow seniors Whitney Hagan and Whitney Weiland (Paige s twin). Their opponent in the semis is a surprising Sprayberry team. The Yellow Jackets (29-15) came into the sectionals as the third seed out of Area 7, but defeated Monroe Area, Harris County and Area 6 s No. 2 seed Chamblee to reach the Final Four. A week earlier, Marist defeated that same Chamblee team to win Area 6. Now, senior outside hitter Haley Winston will try and help her Yellow Jackets knock off the Area 6 champions. Two familiar foes will do battle in the other semifinal match. Sandy Creek (48-13) faces Area 3 rival Whitewater for the fourth time this year. The Fighting Patriots are a perfect 3-0 against the Wildcats (45-12) this year, including a win in the finals of the area tournament. Head coach Paul Collins s team was the state runner-ups in Class AAA a year ago, but Cheri Smith, Mallie Haumann, Jennifer Dunn and Katie Davenport have Sandy Creek thinking of getting the big prize in AAAA this season. Ben Thacker s Whitewater squad is very used to winning as well. Seniors Anna Wilson, Brittany Woods, Charmaine Kehoe and Camille Butler do not want their career to end with a fourth loss to Sandy Creek. CLASS AAA St. Pius X and Woodward Academy are two Class AAA powerhouses that are also two of the better teams in the state. Both schools were members of Class AAAA a year ago, making it to the Final Four where they both bowed out. St. Pius X (48-12) finished the regular season ranked No. 1 and despite its outstanding volleyball tradition is looking for its first appearance in a state title game, and its first banner. In our gym, you get a banner for winning the state championship or being a staterunner up and that s it, said head coach John Frederick. It would mean a lot to these kids to be the team that put the banner up. Some of the standouts for the Golden Lions are All- Area players Ellen Marsau, Michele Barnes, Hannah Sprague, Emily Schultz and Kayte Brinkman. Their opponent in the semis is Area 7 champion Creekview. The Grizzlies (32-13) feature middle blocker Hillary Turner, outside hitter Cayla Degen and setter Katie Battani. Head coach John Edwards s program is in its third year of playing varsity volleyball and is making its first Final Four appearance. Woodward Academy (33-13), which owns more state championships than any other school in the state (seven), is on an eight-match winning streak and boasts a lot of talent. Mariah Woodson and Gabi Smith are two of the better players in Georgia and Lauren Hatcher, Briana Spruill and Zoey Morton are good in their own right. Woodward faces Oconee County, which is the Area 8 champions and has a 10-match winning streak. Laura Guest, Darby Rogers and Tania Tauiliili help drive the Warriors (35-17) ship. CLASS AA/A After being a dominant program in Class AAA, winning five state championships from , Westminster now finds itself in Class AA/A. The Wildcats (38-2) are the No. 1-ranked team in AA/A, having not a lost a match to a team from the classification. Nevertheless, Westminster head coach Jona Braden knows AA/A has a lot of talent. This classification just has a wide range of very, very good teams, so to be in the position we are, we feel very fortunate, Braden said. Meg Buker, Meredith Kolff, Annie Martin, Kealy Hartman and Kelly York are some of the key players for a deep and wellbalanced Wildcat team that ended Wesleyan s run of four consecutive state championships with a win in the sectionals. Westminster takes on Savannah Christian in the semifinals. The Raiders (21-14) won the Area 2 championship and are led by five seniors. They include Jessica Green, Allyson Faircloth and Jordan Shealy. Savannah Christian dropped a tough contest 2-0 (25-20, 25-15) to Westminster earlier in the season. The other semifinal has Lovett facing Holy Innocents. Lovett (33-10) lost in the Area 5 finals to Westminster, but rebounded to drop only one game in the sectionals. Libero Mai Bui and setter Natalie Rast are reliable performers for head coach Mary Buczek s Lions. The Golden Bears (23-11) came into the sectionals as the No. 3 seed from Area 7, but beat North Oconee, Calvary Day and Walker to reach the Final Four. Meg Yanda, Kelly Reagan and Carole Malcolm lead the way for Holy Innocents. All photos in this guide are courtesy of Photographic Arts ( Butler can be reached at jbutler@scoreatl.com.
