The four outside hitters, along with two middle blockers who also graduated, accounted for 1,018 of the teams 1,265 kills or 80.5 percent of the team s kill production. They also lost 62.1 percent of their total blocks from a year ago. Portland State had its second lowest kills per set mark dating back to The Vikings averaged kills per set in 2014, lowest since 1999 (11.86). Sophomore Erin Clark enters the season after starting 22 of the team s 29 games at the position a year ago. Sophomore transfer Kylie Copple will compete with Clark for the starting job after transferring to the Park Blocks during the middle of With Erin and Kylie coming off of one year of experience, I m more comfortable with their ability to lead offensively in those categories that aren t that obvious; getting their hitters hot, making sure they re taking care of attackers, Seemann said. And then also understanding what our game plan is and taking it out on to the court without overthinking it. They are both capable of doing that and both give us strengths in different categories. Clark started the first 16 games for the Vikings before they moved to a 6-2 rotation. She averaged 7.59 assists along with 1.86 digs per set a year ago. She was second on the team with 24 service aces. Erin is right now one of our best servers, Seemann added. We need her serve and will use her serve. She is a great back-row setter, running through the back three rotations. Her quickness of delivery is good and accurate, so she s someone that we see helping us go through the back three rotations. Copple joined the Vikings after the 2014 season and was with the team all through spring camp. The transfer averaged 9.33 assists per set at Central Michigan over her freshman season. Kylie is a more solid front-row player. She does a good job of sealing the net, Seemann added. She doesn t block much higher than Erin, but she does a better job blocking the stuff hit into her. She has an edge on the net play in that regard. They compliment each other well, but we d love if both of them improve and become more complete. OUTSIDE HITTERS Arguably the biggest unknown for the Vikings this season will be the play of their outside hitters. Portland State does not have a returning outside hitter on the roster. It lost two outsides to graduation while another two decided to leave the program. That leaves room for four young but extremely talented additions to the roster. The elder stateswomen of the group, and the roster as a whole, will be junior transfer Pati Anae. Anae spent her first two seasons at the College of Southern Idaho where she averaged 2.10 kills, 1.89 digs, and 0.83 blocks per set as a sophomore. Pati is our oldest member of the team and she hasn t even been here, Seemann said. She is extremely vocal. You re going to walk into the gym and hear her. When I went and recruited her I heard her more than anyone else, and it wasn t because I was there. She is a skilled enough player to back it up. She has huge hands and is a big blocking presence. She can do a lot of things. Along with Anae, the Vikings welcome three true freshmen outside hitters to the team in Sarah Brennan, Eva Linden, and Jenna Mullen. Brennan, a Kirkland, Wash. native, was an All-King Conference first team selection as a senior while earning the Juanita High School Most Valuable Player honor. Sarah is a 6-foot-3 outside who can pass and get out and hit, Seemann said. It s possible that we see her on the right side and be a good blocking presence. Eva Linden, from Fife High School in Milton, Wash., was the league MVP and an All-Area first team selection her junior and senior seasons. Eva is a probable starter. Of the four right now, she has demonstrated that she ll be one of the passers and stay out on the floor, Seemann said. She hits well out of `the back row. She is a utility player. She can play left. She can play right. She is very level headed and someone who is a candidate for contributing right off the bat. The final outside on the roster is freshman Jenna Mullen from Emerald Ridge High School in Puyallup, Wash. Mullen graduated with career records in kills (1,313) and blocks (122) Big Sky Standings North Big Sky PCT. GB Overall PCT. 4 Double-Doubles Erin Clark - 5 Triple-Doubles Double-Digit Kills Double-Digit Digs Tasha Bojanic - 5 Erin Clark - 5 Jenna has a lot of heat on the ball. She doesn t hit clean all the time, but she hits dangerously, Seemann said. She can be very productive offensively and is a solid server, but she needs to improve her blocking game. We anticipate she ll find her way on to the floor sooner rather than later. MIDDLE BLOCKERS The Vikings return a pair of middles to the roster in 2015 in Sarah Liva and Emani Jackson. Liva led the Vikings with 1.01 blocks per set while adding 1.32 kills per set. She was one of just two players in 2014 to start every match. Sarah is a probable starter, Seemann said. She s had a great winter and is touching 10-1, so she s playing high. She s stronger. She s hungrier. She did everything right over the offseason. We want to expand her role offensively and give her more opportunities to swing because I believe she s more terminal. She was terminal last year, but we couldn t get her the ball often enough. Jackson saw limited action later in the season, primarily on the right side. She played in 13 matches and tallied 28 kills and 20 blocks. Emani is someone who had a good winter, Seemann added. She s someone who could play right side for us; she did that for us last year. She has the advantage playing last season and being here for a year. She trained as a middle during the winter and showed some good improvement. Mikaelyn Sych joins the Vikings in the middle. The true freshman from Airdrie, Alberta, Canada helped her high school to a top-4 finish in the 3A Alberta Provincials in She also played for an extremely successful Junio Dino s Women s Volleyball Club the past few seasons that won the Division 1, Tier 1 National Championships in Mikaelyn is an extremely quick and bouncy middle, Seemann said. She is a true middle and a very good blocker. The biggest test for her will be playing at this pace. She has dominated since she was on the 14 s team on the best club in her region. The way she blocks and her speed are extremely positive. The final middle blocker on the roster is freshman Katy Wilson from Highlands Ranch, Colo. Wilson finished her high school career as Douglas County High School s all-time kills leader with 813 and was an all-conference selection as a senior. Katie is a question mark. She s slight when you see her but she jumps a mile, Seemann added. She hits really well behind the setter and first tempo. She is a good blocker but not a huge blocker. She has great arm speed and the ability to terminate. She s someone that we see as a middle, but she may see some time on the right side. LIBERO/DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST The Vikings will have to replace a three-year starting libero and two-time Big Sky Libero of the Year in Kasimira Kasi Clark who rounded out her senior season as the Vikings all-time digs leader. Sophomore Tasha Bojanic is the front-runner to replace Kasi Clark after serving as a defensive specialist in The native of Belgrade, Serbia played in 24 matches making 13 starts as a DS. She averaged 2.12 digs per set, third on the team. She also added 10 service aces. Tasha stands as the most likely libero candidate. She had all that we could hope for in a freshman year, Seemann said. Just about every team tested her, especially when we were on the road. She had a great winter and has done everything she could to get stronger. The way she thinks and perceives that game is right on. She has more experience than almost anyone on the team because she s been playing in Serbia against other women who were 25 or 28 for most of her life. Because of that nothing really frazzles her. Hadley Heck and Olivia Skalbeck are a pair of walk-on defensive specialists that were added to the roster during the spring. Heck, a Corvallis, Ore. native, led her Crescent Valley team in digs her final two years playing as the team s libero. Skalbeck lettered all four years at Portland s Central Catholic. She led her team to a second-place finish in the Oregon 6A State Championships her final two years after winning the state championship as a freshman. Hadley and Olivia are both local walk-on defensive specialists, Seemann said. When you watch Olivia she s going to do things that nobody else on her team can do. She ll rob obvious kills and just get underneath it and pop it up. She s one of those people who will flop and twist and you ll think, didn t that hurt? She s very good at doing those things. She s a decent passer but she s smallish so she doesn t have a lot of range. Hadley is more of a steady passer and has the ability to make plays like Olivia. 4 Big Sky Regular Season Champions: 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013
