All-time, Utah State is 9- in exhibition action. The Aggies have not lost an exhibition game since the season when they fell to the Utah Pride, 66-65, and Northwest Sports, Utah State is 4-0 in exhibition play under fourth-year head coach Jerry Finkbeiner. SCOUTING THE RED STORM The Aggies play their first in-state match-up of the year this weekend against Dixie State. The Division II school is located in St. George, Utah and plays in the Pacific West Conference. Saturday s exhibition will be the first of the year for the Red Storm. Last season, Dixie State finished the year with an 8-18 record, going 7-13 in PacWest action. The team s sole non-conference win came over Cal State San Marcos. As a team, Dixie State averaged 68.1 points and 44.5 rebounds per game last season. The Red Storm shot 38.7 percent from the field (666-of-1719), 6.5 percent (130-of-490) from three and 65.5 percent (308-of-470) from the free throw line. Head coach Jenny Thigpin took over the program in an interim role last November, becoming the official head coach in January. Senior center Taylor Mann is the top returner for the Red Storm this season, as she averaged 11.4 points and 9.0 rebounds per game last year. Dixie State returns two starters and nine letterwinners from last year s squad. Utah State and Dixie State have played in exhibition games before, but have met just once in the regular season. The Red Storm came to Logan to open the season, topping the Aggies, FRESH FACES There are several new players on the Utah State roster this year as the Aggies welcome nine newcomers to the program. Joining the team as junior college transfers are junior forwards Angelica de Paulo (São Paulo, Brazil) and Antoina Robinson (Dallas, Texas) who were teammates at New Mexico Junior College. In addition, seven freshmen are starting their collegiate careers at Utah State in guard Rachel Brewster (Melbourne, Australia/Rowville Secondary College), guard Taylor Enders (West Linn, Ore./West FOLLOW THE Utah State Athletic Media Relations - Megan Allen, Asst. NO PLACE LIKE HOME After playing eight of the 13 non-conference games on the road during the season, the Aggies are excited to spend the majority of this year s preseason inside the familiar walls of the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. Including the two exhibition games, Utah State will open the season with five-straight home games. The team will not leave the state until December, when the Aggies play at Northern Colorado. Since the reinstatement of the USU program in 003, the Aggies are 88-7 when playing in the Spectrum. GIVE ME FIVE Utah State returns just one starter to the court this season in sophomore guard Funda Nakkasoglu. The one starter is the fewest the Aggies have had returning in a season since the program was reinstated prior to the campaign. The single returner is the fewest in the Mountain West, as all other conference teams return at least two student-athletes to its starting lineup. TOUR OF UTAH There are eight NCAA women s basketball programs in the state of Utah. Of those, the Aggies will play games against five of them this season. Utah State hosts Dixie State in exhibition action (Nov. 7) before Westminster travels to Logan on Nov. 16. Utah State will travel to Utah County twice in the preseason, playing at BYU on Nov. 4 and at Utah Valley on Dec. 10. The Aggies will conclude the non-conference season at home on Dec., hosting Utah. All-time, Utah State is against in-state opponents. The Aggies lead the all-time series against Utah Valley (6-3), Westminster (1-0) and Southern Utah (5-) and trail against BYU (3-33), Dixie State (0-1), Weber State (16-3) and Utah (3-3). OUR OWN UNITED NATIONS The Utah State coaching staff continues to recruit outside of the United States, building a roster that features five international players from four countries and three continents. Melbourne, Australia has proven to be kind to Utah State, with sophomore guard Funda Nakkasoglu and freshman guard Rachel Brewster joining the team from Down Under. Europe is represented through senior forwards Julianne Anchling (Faverges de la Tour, France) and Tijana Djukic (Kikinda, Serbia). This season, Utah State also welcomes junior forward Angelica de Paulo, a native of São Paulo, Brazil. DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS Another strong recruiting area for the Aggies is the Lone Star State. This season s team has four Texas natives on it, who all come from rich basketball backgrounds. Junior college transfer forward Antoina Robinson is a Dallas native, while freshman guard Victoria Price grew up in Grand Prairie, a Dallas suburb. Sophomore guard Baylee Peck hails from Leander, about 180 miles outside of Dallas, and freshman center Deja Mason went to high school in San Antonio. STOPPING THE CAROUSEL As Utah State head coach Jerry Finkbeiner enters his fourth season at the helm of the program, this will be the first time he has had the same full staff of assistant coaches for two consecutive years. Micha Thompson is the longest-tenured Aggie assistant, as she joined Finkbeiner in his first season at USU in 01. Ben Finkbeiner and JC Carter both joined the staff last season. The Aggies spent last Thanksgiving in Waco, Texas, playing at the BTI Classic, hosted by Baylor. The 013 holiday found the team in Northridge, Calif., at the Radisson Hotel Chatsworth Thanksgiving Classic at Cal State Northridge. In 01, Utah State played in and won the Great Alaska Shootout, hosted by Alaska-Anchorage. Along with a Thanksgiving break, the Aggies will have a full week off between the non-conference and Mountain West portions of their season. The team hosts Utah on Dec. before San José State visits Logan on Dec. 31. SOMETHING TO PROVE Utah State women s basketball has been picked ninth in the Mountain West Women s Basketball Preseason Poll as voted on by a panel of the league s 11 head coaches and media representatives. Colorado State, the regular-season champion, was picked to finish first in the conference with 37 points, including 1 first-place votes. New Mexico was tabbed second with 1 total points and seven first-place votes, while last season s tournament champion, Boise State, came in third with 15 points, including six firstplace votes. Fresno State was selected fourth with 18 points, followed by UNLV (138 points) and San Diego State (135 points). Wyoming was slated seventh (15), with San José State coming in eighth (93). EARLY ACCOLADES Utah State sophomore guard Funda Nakkasoglu, the defending MW Freshman of the Year, was selected to the Preseason All-Mountain West Team. Nakkasoglu is the first Utah State player to receive the preseason nod since the Aggies joined the Mountain West. She is the first to be named to the preseason all-conference list since Devyn Christensen was named to the Preseason All-Western Athletic Conference First-Team prior to the season. Joining Nakkasoglu on the preseason team is Boise State junior guard Brooke Pahu- Utah State Game Notes Oct. 8, 015
