1 Wellness Champion Playbook_v12_Layout 1 3/11/14 5:03 PM Page YOUR MONTHLY THEME: American Heart Association s National Start Walking Campaign! brings us longer and warmer days and more opportunities to be physically active! Regular physical activity is one of the most important things people can do for their health and well-being. DID YOU KNOW: Physical activity helps associates: Stay healthier and live longer Have more energy Reduce weight Look better Reduce risk for developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, depression and some forms of cancer Manage stress Strengthen bones and muscles Be a great role model for family and friends Sleep better Physical Activity Recommendations MODERATE Moderate activity (e.g., brisk walking) means that your heart is beating faster. You can still carry on a conversation, but you ll be breathing heavier. And you ll notice that you re starting to sweat. The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of moderate activity per day, five times per week. The great news is that exercise can be broken down into as little as 10-minute sessions and still provide great benefits! Good Advice: Something is always better than nothing! And everyone has to start somewhere. Even if you've been sedentary for years, today is the day you can begin to make healthy changes in your life. If you don't think you'll make it for 30 minutes, set a reachable goal for today. You can work up toward your overall goal by increasing your time as you get stronger. Don't let all-or-nothing thinking rob you of doing what you can every day. Associates should always consult with their doctor before beginning an exercise program. YOUR ROLE: We are requiring Wellness Champions to use their allotted 2 hours per week on the clock this month to support the American Heart Association s National Start Walking Day campaign by: 1) Spreading the word about the benefits of walking as a form of physical activity 2) Identifying and mapping out The Home Depot Mile at your location 3) Getting a pledge from at least 25% of your location s associates to incorporate physical activity into their day, beginning with National Start Walking Day and then keeping it up long-term 4) Highlighting our Company s commitment to our core value of taking care of our people by promoting initiatives that create a supportive wellness environment in each location 5) Completing the Quarter 1 Wellness Champion survey by 30 at livetheorangelife.com/wellnesschampion Sources: American Heart Association and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention TAKING CARE OF OUR PEOPLE is one of our Company s core values and this month provides a great opportunity for our valued Wellness Champions to use your company allotted time to: Provide leadership in your location and Display your commitment to our associates and their health and well-being.
2 Wellness Champion Playbook_v12_Layout 1 3/11/14 5:03 PM Page Spread the Word: Walking With A Purpose! Regular, brisk walking is the activity of choice for millions of Americans because people are more likely to stick to walking than any other form of exercise. Done often and properly, walking can deliver the same benefits as those often gained from more vigorous physical activity and sports regimens. Walking is free and requires no equipment other than a supportive pair of walking shoes. 76% of people are more likely to walk if they know another person is counting on them, so grab a friend, family member, co-worker or group of people and have fun! Associates should always consult with their doctor before beginning an exercise program. Communicate to associates in your location about the benefits of walking and physical activity. Remind associates to speak with their Primary Care Physician about the benefits of physical activity and walking to their health. Identify a Home Depot Mile track at your work location (this is a required responsibility as a Wellness Champion). Use a roller wheel to mark the 1-mile track. Come up with competitions to encourage fun and excitement so associates will use the track to be healthy! For more information, visit livetheorangelife.com/wellnesschampion. Design a map of your Home Depot Mile track you identify and post in a highly visible place in your location for associates to view. Make sure associates are aware of your Home Depot Mile. Provide examples to associates of ways to incorporate more walking into their day even if it s in 10 minute increments! Take the stairs Gardening Park in the farthest parking spot from your destination Walk The Home Depot Mile at your work location Moderate to heavy housework Walk the dog Walk around the field while kids are playing sports Ride your bike or walk to work Walk while catching up with friends
3 Wellness Champion Playbook_v12_Layout 1 3/11/14 5:03 PM Page National Start Walking Day Event National Start Walking Day is a nationwide call-to-action in for Americans to adopt a healthy lifestyle and keep it up long-term. Our associates can join thousands of others across the nation as they pledge their commitment to a healthier lifestyle as part of this annual American Heart Association event. Host a National Start Walking Day event at your location! Start by determining a date in to host the event where you will encourage associates to walk for 30 minutes that day (even if it is broken up into 10 minute increments) in hopes they will continue this walking/physical activity regimen long-term. Be sure to coordinate the date with your location management team and ask for their support in promoting and implementing a successful event. If an associate doesn t normally exercise and wants to pledge less than 30 minutes, that is fine too. The key is to get started. Update the National Start Walking Day flyer in your monthly communications kit with the identified date of your location s event. Make copies of the enclosed Pledge Form for at least 25% of the associates at your location to complete. Promote the event to your associates in advance and get at least 25% of the associates at your location to make a pledge to you (by returning the enclosed pledge form) to incorporate 30 minutes of physical activity into their day on your location s identified National Start Walking Day. Post the pledges you receive in the break room to build momentum and inspire others to make the pledge. On the days leading up to the event, spread the word about the importance of physical activity and walking and remind associates who made a pledge to participate. Encourage associates to walk the identified, accessible and convenient Home Depot Mile walking track in your location before work, after work or while on break to help accumulate a total of 30 minutes of physical activity on your event day. Associates can also walk outside or on their own time at their chosen location and let you know that they participated. Make sure associates who ve made the pledge participate on the day of the event. Take pictures of your event and submit them to (choose success story/wellness patch nomination form) with a summary of your event success! Find A Walking Path Are your associates looking for a new walking route now that warmer weather is on its way? Great news the American Heart Association has gathered nearly 30,000 walking paths, spanning more than 132,000 miles and ranging in difficulty from easy to challenging. Trying out a walking path is a great way to experience new scenery, change up a routine or learn about great hidden trails in your local area. Encourage associates to find available walking paths in their area by searching their zip code on the American Heart Association s website They can print out the path to try or follow it on their smartphone or tablet. There is also a convenient tracking tool for logging miles. Look up the most convenient paths to your work location too and share them with associates. Encourage associates to share with one another the local walking paths that they have found on the website or on their own and to get walking and physical activity incorporated into their day. Encourage associates to buddy up with family, friends or coworkers to walk together! Associates should always consult with their doctor before beginning an exercise program.
4 Wellness Champion Playbook_v12_Layout 1 3/11/14 5:03 PM Page Health & Fitness Discounts Did you know that our valuable Home Depot Associate Discount program is available to all associates? There are more than 260k registered users on the discount website and associates saved over $8M in 2013 by using this Company-offered benefit. The associate discount website offers a wide variety of discounts that allow associates to save money on health and wellness products/services, and health/fitness club discounts to support them in getting both physically and financially healthy. The associate discount website is accessible by visiting and logging in to Your Benefits Resources > Associate Discounts tab. Promote the associate discount website to all associates. Encourage at least 5 associates in your location to register on the website to begin utilizing this valuable benefit! Healthy Living Associate Spotlight Associate MELISSA WEISER from Store 2207 Melissa Walked Her Way to Better Health In March 2013, Melissa decided it was time to improve her health. She started her journey by walking as much as she could. Last month, she ran her first 5K the Polar Strut. Today, she jogs seven miles several times a week. Melissa also used Home Depot s BEFORE associate discount program to join a gym. Along with exercise, Melissa s health improvement journey has included big changes in her eating habits. She has replaced diet soda, fast food and chips AFTER with green tea, water, vegetables and turkey. The result: she has lost 65 pounds! Melissa s goals are to lose another 100 pounds and inspire and encourage her fellow associates to walk a mile in her shoes and improve their health. Melissa s accomplishments are the reason The Home Depot rewards associates with the Building Better Health recognition patch. Note to Wellness Champions Don t forget to check out livetheorangelife.com > Healthy Living > Healthy Living Resources for a full list of health and wellness resources that our company offers to help support associates in their health journey! Actively promote these benefits throughout each month. Associates will be encouraged to continue their physical activity journey this summer during the annual 6-Week Home Depot Health Challenge, a great resource that more than 63k associates took advantage of in 2013 to improve their health. More information coming soon!
