POOL HOURS May 28th-August 13th ADULT LAP SWIM Mon-Fri: 7a-10a Mon-Fri: 11a-4p/6p-7p (limited lanes) Fri : 11a-6p (limited lanes) PUBLIC SWIM Mon-Thurs: 10a-4p Fri: 10a-6p Sat: 10a-3p Sun: 12p-3p COMMUNITY CENTER HOURS Mon-Fri: 7a-8:30p Sat: 9a-1pm Sun: Closed NOTE & FLOAT JACKET PROGRAM- LIFE JACKETS AVAILABLE FOR ALL NON-SWIMMERS. The City of St. Pete Beach will implement the Note & Float program at the Aquatic Center (requiring non-swimmers to wear life jackets) which is available for use, free of charge. Most importantly, non-swimming children simply are not going to drown wearing them. By using this nationally recognized life jacket program, the number of water rescues will significantly decrease and the aquatic center becomes a safer place for the whole family. Parents are still required to remain within arm s reach of the child in the water while wearing these life jackets; it is not a substitute or replacement for parent supervision. Just like we require young children to wear seat belts and sit in child car seats, this change to the water safety culture by encouraging the use of properly-fitting life jackets in ALL bodies of water including public and residential swimming pools, will make aquatic facilities a more enjoyable and safe environment. Parents are encouraged to also bring their own life jackets for their children, remembering that the ONLY safe flotation device in a swimming pool is a US Coast Guard Approved life jacket. The life jacket is the car seat for water and allows non-swimmers to enjoy the water and have fun in a safe manner. 3 OSafetySpot Community Risk Reduction BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY Welcome Back! F EST. E D Division of the Fire Marshal PREVENTION EDUCATION INTERVENTION IMPACT It s that time of year again where the kids are all headed back to school! During the flurry of getting school supplies, picking class schedules and filling out forms, take the time to talk to your kids about their safety going to and from school. Whether children walk, ride their bicycle or take the bus to school, it is extremely important that they take proper safety precautions. The St. Pete Beach Fire Rescue wants your children to be successful and safe this school year. To ride safely, you need to know the rules of the road. If you don t, then you should not ride in traffic or without an adult. Ride on the right side of the road or trail in a single file line in the same direction as other vehicles and come to a complete stop before crossing streets. Wait for a driver s signal before crossing the street. When you ride your bicycle, wear bright colors during the day and right before the sun rises or sets. Make sure that your helmet fits correctly. The helmet should fit low on your forehead so that two fingers fit between it and your eyebrows. Another way to check is to put the helmet on your head and look up. If you can t see your helmet, it is too far back.

4 S t. P e t e B e a c h F i r e R e s c u e Action Steps You Can Take: Community Risk Reduction More children are hit by cars near schools than any other location. Always obey the speed limit in school zones. Take extra care to look out for children in school zones, near playgrounds and parks. WALKING TO SCHOOL Walk to school with a group of kids and always have a responsible adult with you. Always walk on the sidewalk if one is available. If no sidewalk is available, walk facing the traffic. The safest place to cross is at a street corner or intersection. Before you step off the curb to cross the street, stop and look all ways to see if cars are coming. When no cars are coming, it is safe for you and an adult to cross. Look left-right-left as you do it, and hold the adult s hand. Walk, don t run. This gives time for drivers to see you before you enter the roadway. Running also makes you more likely to fall in the street. Don t dart out in front of a parked car. The driver of the car will not be able to see you. *Source SafeKids Worldwide CONTACT US FOR MORE INFORM ATION 7301 Gulf Blvd, St. Pete Beach, FL,

6 Immediate Release July 31, 2017 Media Contact Libby Bolling, Public Information Specialist, (727) Pinellas: $9.5 million Upham Beach project scheduled to begin Aug. 1 Permanent T-groins will replace temporary tubes to slow beach erosion at north end of St. Pete Beach Upham Beach to receive permanent T-groins; project scheduled to begin Aug. 1 Test of temporary T-groins determined effectiveness of $9.5 million project funded by state grant and Tourist Development Tax Work will temporarily close half of beach at one time during seven-month project A beach stabilization project is scheduled to begin at Upham Beach on Tuesday, Aug. 1. The $9.5 million permanent T-groin installation project will slow erosion at the popular beach, located at the north end of St. Pete Beach. Currently, yellow sand-filled tubes form five T-groin structures on the beach. Those will be replaced with four rock T-groins during the project, which is scheduled to be completed by February The work on the beach will proceed from the south to the north, with no more than half of the beach closed to the public at one time. More sections of the beach could potentially be closed for short periods as a safety precaution, depending on construction activity. The temporary sand-filled tubes were installed in 2005 to test their effectiveness in slowing beach erosion at Upham Beach, one of the fastest eroding beaches in the state. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection reviewed the results of the tests and agreed that the structures are effective and will provide improved storm protection, slow erosion and save money over time through reduced need for nourishment of sand. The project will be paid for using Tourist Development Tax funds dedicated to beach nourishment, with 50-percent of the total cost to be reimbursed from a state grant. Pinellas County s Environmental Management Division a division of Public Works is responsible for coastal management projects, including beach nourishment and stabilization projects. These projects align with the County s strategic goal of practicing superior environmental stewardship by preserving our beaches, and protecting and improving our water quality.
