3 Post Speed Limits (Engineering) Street needs to be at least ¼ mile in length. Petition is required to be signed by 67% of the owner/occupants along the Street. A petition is not required if an Engineering Study determines an accident problem or safety hazard exists along the street.

5 Multi-way Stops (Engineering) Average Daily Traffic Volumes (ADT) must be less than 3500 vehicles per day. Spacing between stops must be 800 feet. A petition is required to be signed by 67% of the residents who live along the street. If an Engineering Study determines that a multiway stop would correct an existing traffic hazard, then a petition is not required.

8 Neighborhood Speed Watch (Education) Radar Trailer is available for use by neighborhood. Neighborhood is encouraged to take the Pace Car Pledge. Speed watch signs are posted if neighborhood takes pace car pledge and periodically uses the radar trailer.

10 Pace Car Program (Education) The program is modeled after similar programs that have been successfully implemented in other US cities. By signing the Pace Car Pledge and displaying the Pace Car window/bumper sticker, Greensboro citizens set the pace for safer Greensboro streets. Citizens take the Pace Car Pledge and agree to: Drive within the speed limit on City streets, especially in residential areas Stop at all stop signs Stop at all red lights Stop to let pedestrians cross the street Be courteous to bicyclists Display the Pace Car sticker

26 Speed Hump Programs Most programs in NC have a set annual budget ($100,000 to $600,000) Most programs in NC have at least 1 staff person dedicated to their speed hump program. Most programs evaluate/rank streets Top rated streets get treatment
27 Speed Humps Studies show that speed humps need to be spaced at 500 intervals to be effective (5 MPH reduction in speeds) Over 1000 miles of residential streets in Greensboro Potential for 10,000 speed humps in Greensboro Speed Humps cost $3000 to $5000 (Capital Cost) A speed hump program would require additional fulltime staff to administer. A speed hump program would cost an additional $250,000 to $500,000 annually to implement.
28 Possible Enhanced Traffic Calming Program Phase I Conduct neighborhood speed study. Conduct neighborhood meeting. Post speed limit of 25 MPH on residential streets and 30 MPH on collector streets. (petition required) Install multi-way stop signs where appropriate. (petition required) Increase Police enforcement of established speed limits and/or multi-way stops. Implement Neighborhood Speed Watch Program and Pace Car Program.
29 Possible Enhanced Traffic Calming Program Evaluate Effectiveness of Phase I Conduct neighborhood speed study. Conduct neighborhood meeting to share results of the speed study. If the 85% speeds are still 5 MPH above the posted speed limits, then other traffic calming devices such as speed humps will be considered.
30 Possible Enhanced Traffic Calming Program Phase II GDOT staff will develop traffic calming plan for the neighborhood and determine speed hump location. Neighborhood meeting will be conducted to reveal traffic calming plan and speed hump locations. Petitions will be circulated for speed humps. A petition must be signed by 67% of the residents that live along the affected streets.
31 Possible Enhanced Traffic Calming Program Phase II Implementation GDOT staff would evaluate Phase II traffic calming projects and rank the projects based on projected effectiveness and neighborhood support. Phase II traffic calming projects will be implemented in order of ranking as budget permits. There is no current budget for speed humps.
