3 Collisions in Calgary in Fatal, 2,539 Injury, 33,851 non-injury Collisions Societal cost estimate of $1.04 B 215 casualty collisions / 100,000 pop. (National: 348/ 100,000 pop.) On track for Vulnerable Road Users and Non-Intersection collision targets; continued effort needed in these areas and intensified effort needed in other areas. 5 Speeding Issue in Calgary Exceeding the speed limit is endemic in Calgary Common responses from citizens are that it is ok to exceed the speed limit by 5-10 km/h or by 10-15% Citizens regularly express frustration about others speeding on their streets May 4, 2016 Calgary s Speed Limit Observation & Warning System V03 5

6 Why is speed important? 10 km/h or 15 km/h over the posted speed feels like a safe speed and is seldom enforced, propagating the myth that it is ok to go a little over This requires changes to the road environment to make speed limits more credible, social norms, user behavior, education and enforcement, judicial system, health system etc. Transportation is an every day activity and there are many factors that influence traffic safety also the economy. Kinetic Energy = ½ Mass x Velocity 2 1% increase in speed ~ 2% increase in collisions, ~3% increase in injuries, ~4%increase in fatal collisions.
