3 When the Lights are Flashin, Don t be Passin Oct , 2017 More than 90,000 children rely on a school bus to safely transport them to and from school every day in Nova Scotia. School bus safety is an issue that requires ongoing attention. The annual School Bus Safety Awareness Campaign promotes school bus safety throughout the province. School buses are designed specifically with child safety in mind. We aim to educate drivers who approach school buses as children walk to and from the school bus through regular awareness messages and our annual campaign. We remind drivers to take caution when they approach school buses. We remind drivers to stop in both directions when the lights are flashing. We also promote safety procedures to school staff, students, and parents. There is a high rate of drivers who illegally pass school buses that are stopped for children to board or exit the bus. These incidents are called red light violations. In Nova Scotia, 1,450 violations were recorded by school bus drivers in These violations put our children at serious risk when simply boarding or exiting the school bus. Bus drivers, parents, schools, and other safety groups have shown a strong interest in our School Bus Safety Awareness Campaign. This is your opportunity to be involved with a campaign that addresses an important public issue. The Annual School Bus Safety Awareness Campaign will take place from October 16-20, The following is a list of activities and promotional materials that we have planned for this campaign. These depend on both in-kind sponsors as well as sponsors that provide financial support. Video contest for elementary, junior high, and high school students with cash prizes. Kids will create videos that will stress the importance of school bus safety and remind drivers not to pass a school bus when its lights are flashing. The contest will run in the fall, and we will announce the winners in December. Information cards that the police and motor carrier inspectors will distribute to the driving public Safety messages from media sponsors Extensive use of social media for regular and promotional messages Articles posted in SSNS member newsletters News releases and resulting news stories Launch event

5 Protecting Our Children On and Off The Bus SCHOOL BUS DESIGN A school bus is designed primarily for children. There are close to 40 federal standards for the design of school buses. These standards cover safety features such as the following: Burn resistance for materials used inside the school bus A frame to help the school bus remain intact in a rollover crash A protective cage for the fuel tank to reduce the possibility of fuel leaks Seats are high off the ground to reduce of injury in a side impact collision The bus is painted yellow and has reflective tape to attract attention SCHOOL BUS DRIVER REQUIREMENTS In Nova Scotia, school bus drivers must follow the requirements listed below: Have a class 1 or 2 license with a B or C endorsement Pass their medical and eye exams Complete training requirements of their school board Make sure the school bus is in excellent mechanical shape Perform a daily pre-trip inspection of the bus and report any safety defects Perform a safety inspection twice a year Maintain order on the school bus to minimize distractions SEAT BELTS ON SCHOOL BUSES Seat belts are not provided on the school buses; however, the school bus seats are designed to provide optimal safety for students without these restraints, a form of protection is called "compartmentalization." School bus seats have high backs spaced closely together with soft padding so that children are kept between seats in the event of an accident. BUILT-IN CHILD CAR SEATS Transport Canada testing has indicated that child car seats may improve safety for preschool aged children under 18kg (40 lbs), when travelling on a school bus. School boards in Nova Scotia order built-in child car seats when they order new buses. Depending on the type of school bus, there are up to eight built-in child car seats per bus.

6 Safety Tips for Kids To help ensure your safety and the safety of your classmates, read these tips on how to stay safe when getting on and off the bus. I N T H E M O R N I N G 1. When the school bus approaches, line up in single file 2. Stand back from the edge of the road 3. Wait until the bus has come to a complete stop 4. Walk a safe distance from the edge of the road to the bus and do NOT run 5. Wait for the bus driver s signal if you re crossing the road 6. Look both ways for traffic 7. Take 10 steps in front of the school bus, where the driver can see you I N T H E A F T E R N O O N 1. When you get off the bus make sure you take 10 giant steps ahead 2. Stop and look at the bus driver 3. The driver will signal when it is ok to cross 4. Walk in front of the bus and then stop 5. Look both ways to check for vehicles 6. If nothing is coming you can continue crossing the road Remember to never walk behind the bus.
