1 ! Holy Cross Catholic Primary School Newsletter 19th October 2012 Lost property! I have been amazed at the number of unnamed items that have been found and placed in the lost property box at the front entrance. Named items will be returned to their owners. This box will be cleared at the end of this half term (26th October). Any unclaimed items of school uniform will be recycled through the second hand shop and other items will be disposed of to charity. Please could we urge you to mark your child s uniform and belongings so that we can return them. Mayor of East Cowes, Mrs Jane Rann will be formally presenting the school with the money it has received from the National Lottery to develop an outside learning area. The presentation will happen on Monday the 22nd October at 2.00pm at the school, all are welcome to attend the presentation. Late arrivals: We have altered the school timetable by moving our daily worship to am each day. Please could I remind parents that the doors open at 8.45 am with lessons starting at 9.00 am. Children who arrive after 9.00 am should report to the main school office to be registered. Safeguarding: Would parents who realise their child has forgotten an item for the day (after 9.00am) please drop it into the main office. Staff will ensure that your child receives it. Please do not attempt enter the classes once lessons have started. Absence requests: Please supply a full explanation for your request for pupil absence. I am only able to authorise absence in exceptional circumstances. All other requests will be logged as unauthorised. Holy Cross web site is now up and running, Please also note that we have a new address: admin@holycrossrcpri.iow.sch.uk Parents Evenings: Monday 22nd, 3.30pm- 7.00pm & Tuesday 23rd October 3.30pm- 5.30pm. Development day: The school we be closed to pupils on Friday the 26th October for staff development and training.

2 East Dene, Year 4 had a fantastic and only slightly damp time at East Dene. We spent time exploring Bonchurch, Luccombe and Ventnor. We spent a day team building and learning about leadership and we enjoyed some of the time in the evenings writing our diaries, playing games, watching the old movie Swallows and Amazons having a bonfire sing song and enjoying each others company. Thanks to Mrs Volley for volunteering and supporting us on our trip. East Cowes: On Tuesday, Years 3 and 4 went on a Local History walk around East Cowes in search of East Cowes Castle, the former home of architect John Nash, who is famous for designing Regent Street, Regent's Park and Buckingham Palace in London. We discovered that North Lodge, one of two gatehouses, still existed. Children also found the remains of an icehouse, used for storing ice and preserving food for the big house. Unfortunately, we found that East Cowes Castle no longer exists, and that, in its place, there are now modern houses and a small green area. However, the children did discover the remains of a garden wall and the steps and walls of the long conservatory, complete with mason's marks and various notches. They also found a circular brick structure and with the aid of old photos, paintings and plans, they were able to identify which part of the castle we had found. Fortunately the weather stayed dry and sunny for us and there is a display of pictures, maps and building material on display in the Year 3 and 4 classrooms.

3 Year 1 had a wonderful day at Naturezones last Friday. We enjoyed exploring the woodland, looking for animal tracks, worm- charming and working together to make collages with all of the woodland treasures that we collected. We hope to make a return visit in the spring when the bluebells are in flower! Year 1 had the opportunity of studying a Corn snake as part of their topic on animals. Thanks to Leo s auntie for showing and telling us about Rusty! Children's Liturgy at St David's, Sunday 28th Oct at 10 30am. Holy Cross School Prayer Father in heaven we give you today all that we think and do and say and we join it with all that was done by Jesus Christ your son. Amen. If your faith were the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it would move; nothing would be impossible for you. (Mt 17:20)

4 Parking & Road safety: We have recently reviewed our risk assessment for Holy Cross traffic management. This process highlighted a few areas of high risk, in particular cars picking up and moving in the junction between the Holy cross main drive and the convent. Please could parents not park or pick up in this area. We will attempt to park staff cars in this area to maximise space in the car park for parents and try to operate a barrier preventing access at the beginning and end of the day. If any parents are willing or able to offer some time to help manage cars in the car park we would be extremely grateful. Please could I draw your attention to the 10mph speed limit we have on site. North Pedestrian area No unsupervised Vehicular access Convent Holy Cross Pre- School OUT Access and parking for the Convent & Staff Only Holy Cross & Springhill Pre- School Staff car park (weather dependent) Holy Cross & Spring Hill Pre- School Parent & Visitor car park One way system in operation Please park as economically as possible. Please watch out for pedestrians IN Car & Bus Turning 10mph Speed limit.
