1 The Hundred Parishes Walks from railway stations number miles (10kms) from Bishop s Stortford to Stansted Mountfitchet Start: Bishop s Stortford station (Grid Reference TL492209) (ample parking and station toilets). Finish Stansted Mountfitchet station (TL514248) (parking in Station or Mountfitchet Castle payand-display car parks.) Public may use toilets at Stansted s Kings Arms and Yeoman s Cafe. Ordnance Survey Explorer Maps 194 and 195. Varied terrain, mostly on gently-undulating country footpaths. Whilst the town of Bishop s Stortford does not fall within the Hundred Parishes it is a convenient starting point with many eating places. The route passes a pub with restaurant in Birchanger after 4 miles (Three Willows, ) and there are further eating places near the finish. Tip: If travelling by train to and from the two stations it is usually cheaper to buy a return ticket for the most distant station, rather than two single tickets. Tip: If travelling by car, it is suggested that you park at the finish and catch the train to the start, thereby avoiding the possible pressure to finish the walk at a certain time. Leave Bishop s Stortford station by the main exit, through the booking office on the Northbound platform. Outside, turn left towards a large white building in the distance. Pass through a car park, keeping to the left, and watching out for moving vehicles. Exit the car park, turn left and almost immediately left again into another car park. Keep to the right, heading towards a white steel footbridge over the River Stort. Do not use the footbridge, but turn left along the towpath beside the river. When the towpath meets a road (the busy London Road, B1383) turn left and, almost immediately, cross the main road at pedestrian lights. Turn right, cross a minor road and then cross the river. Continue along the pavement for a short distance before forking left onto the footpath, now with the river on your left. Pass under a railway line to leave the outskirts of Bishop s Stortford. Cross a long bridge above a weir. At Southmill Lock, cross the river, at the same time leaving Bishop s Stortford in Hertfordshire and entering Great Hallingbury in Essex. Continue now with the river on the right for a short distance. Pass the clubhouse and soon turn left onto a path / track. When the track turns left, keep straight ahead, passing an aggregate yard on the left, to reach a road that is sometimes busy.
2 This is the A1060 and traffic can travel fast along here. There is no pavement. Turn right on this road for about 100 metres, and cross it with great care. Turn left into Jenkins Lane. The road rises for about 400 metres and the spire of St Michael s Church in Bishop s Stortford appears over to the left. Where the lane bears right, go left onto a tree-lined footpath (probably not waymarked) if you reach Fairhaven, you have gone too far and should retrace to the footpath. The path descends gently and gradually deteriorates. After 300 metres, the narrow path turns sharp right and passes several buildings on the right. Keep straight ahead to meet a road at a T junction. Turn right and cross the road when safe to use the pavement on the left side. Pass the cricket ground on the right and The Hedgerows on the left. Keep straight ahead along this road (Beldams Lane), passing several turnings on the left until the road ends just after Little Beldams. Turn left onto a field, keeping the hedgerow and houses on the left. Pass between allotments and a golf course before emerging onto a lane, where turn left. This is Haymeads Lane. When this reaches a junction keep straight ahead, still on Haymeads Lane, and now back in Bishop s Stortford. Pass an estate of flats on the left, built in the grounds of what was once a workhouse, later became Haymeads Hospital and then Herts & Essex Hospital. The street names echo its medical heritage. Keep straight ahead until the Nags Head public house, where turn right onto the busy Dunmow Road. Stay on this side of the road and soon turn right into Brooke Gardens, a relatively new residential close. Cross onto the pavement and follow the residential road for 100 metres until it bears right. Here, turn left into an alley. The short alley crosses the route of the long-gone railway line that once ran between Bishop s Stortford, Great Dunmow and Braintree. The alley emerges into another close, Norris Close. Go straight ahead along this residential road for 200 metres and turn left into another residential road, Manor Links. Cross to the right hand pavement before the road reaches a roundabout. With care, cross the road that comes in from the right and on the far side enter a public bridleway, signposted to Birchanger. Keep the hedge on the left, following it round to the left and then right before crossing a small ditch. Turn right, keeping a school fence on the left. At the end of the fence turn left into Birchanger Wood. This is ancient woodland that was acquired by a consortium of local councils and is now managed by the volunteers of Birchanger Wood Trust. Follow the clear main path that winds through the wood with houses not far away on the left. After 600 metres the path reaches a crossroads of paths with a fenced compound straight ahead. To the left there is an exit from the wood and a tall white water tower. However, we want to turn right at this crossroads, immediately before the compound. As you walk away from the compound you will be leaving Bishop s Stortford and Hertfordshire, passing into the Essex parish of Birchanger.
3 After about 100 metres, go straight across another path to arrive at a road, the busy and fastmoving A120, Bishop s Stortford bypass, which was cut through Birchanger Wood in the 1970s. Descend to the road and be patient whilst waiting for an opportunity to cross. At the far side, go straight ahead, ignoring paths to left and right, and soon keep straight ahead along a field-edge path. When the path reaches a lane, turn right, keeping a paddock on the left. The path emerges onto a road, where turn right. We are now in the village of Birchanger, on Birchanger Lane. Cross the road and stay on the pavement on the left. After a double bend, the lane reaches the Three Willows pub. From the pub, retrace 50 metres to the corner and turn right onto a bridleway. Almost immediately turn left and follow a field edge path with a hedge on the left. Keep straight ahead, pass a cricket field on the left, and then pass between a hedge and a wooden fence. On reaching a building, turn left to go around the building, turning right and right again onto a tarmac surface. This lane becomes a path and passes between a few houses before reaching the corner of Digby Wood. Here there is a choice for 300 metres either keep straight ahead along the field edge or fork right into the wood and there follow the path parallel with the edge of the wood until it turns left to rejoin the field-edge path. Back on the field-edge path, ignore a path that goes to the left. About 100 metres before farm buildings, follow the bridleway round to the left, past Parsonage Farm, shown here. We are now in the parish of Stansted Mountfitchet. The village comes into view on the left, with its windmill, St John s Church and the 21 st century housing development called Foresthall Park. Continue on the bridleway, crossing a road, and descending gently until the bridleway rejoins the road. Keep on the right. At Churchill Corner turn right, staying on the right. Pass entrances to a leisure centre and a school before turning right onto Church Road. Cross this road at the pedestrian crossing and 100 metres later turn left. Immediately fork right to pass through the cemetery to 12 th century St Mary s Church. This is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust and is often open It has some interesting memorials.
4 Leave St Mary s churchyard through the gates on the far side of the church. Turn left through the parking area and soon turn right onto a footpath. This was once the main route between the church and the centre of the village of Stansted Mountfitchet. Keep straight ahead on the path and then on a lane. Over to the right, the wooden buildings and stockade of Mountfitchet Castle come into view. When the lane meets a road, Church Road, turn right. On the left, Fuller s House was built as almshouses. Pass Elms Farm on the right and almost immediately on the left is the approach road to the southbound platform of Stansted Mountfitchet railway station. Take care if you choose to cross the road here. Alternatively, especially if you would like refreshment (there is a good choice here) or to visit the Norman Castle, carry on over the railway bridge. For the northbound platform, cross Church Road with care and turn left into Station Road. This is the main entrance to the station, with the booking office and ticket machine on this platform. The two platforms are connected by a footbridge. Not all trains stop at all stations so, before boarding one, please check that it is scheduled to stop at your intended destination. A map of the route, drawn by Glyn Kuhn for the Hundred Parishes Society, is shown on the next page.
