FirstNews Lead Story: Article Analysis Special Report: Walk To School Week 2013 (Issue 361: May 2013) Walk to School Week 2013 NEXT week (20 24 May) is Walk to School Week, brought to us as part of Living Streets National Walking Month. Walk to School Week brings together nearly one million schoolchildren, young people, teachers and parents, all with one message in mind, to promote the many benefits of walking to school. Here, Tony Armstrong, Chief Executive of Living Streets, tells First News about the charity and what we can expect from Walk to School Week What is Living Streets? Living Streets is the national charity that stands up for pedestrians. We started out way back in 1929, when we were known as the Pedestrians Association: a group of concerned citizens who cared deeply about the rise of the motor car and the spiralling amount of children and adults who were being killed or injured on the streets. In 1995, we launched Living Streets Walk to School campaign, a nationwide scheme which aims to see that every child who can walk to school, does so. Every May, Living Streets runs National Walking Month, a campaign to get everyone walking more. As part of the month we run Walk to School Week, a fantastic week with events and activities happening up and down the country. The benefits of walking to school and Walk to School Week 2013 National Walking Month is a month of raising awareness of the benefits of walking but it s also about having loads of fun along the way. Walking to school seems like a simple idea, but many children and young people are driven to school in cars or use other forms of transport. That means they miss out on all the benefits that walking brings and all the fun, too. This year, Walk to School Week aims to highlight the benefits of walking. Each day of Walk to School Week will focus on a different aspect of walking. We have great resources available, and our mascot Strider will be encouraging you all to take his five-day walking challenge. Walk to School Week is a great opportunity for parents and children across the UK to try walking to school. Parents have told us that walking to school is less stressful than other forms of transport. They save money on petrol costs, and they have found that their children generally feel healthier and perform better in the classroom. Schools and councils up and down the country will be taking part, and the Walk to School mascot Strider will be very busy, popping up for appearances here, there and everywhere. With events happening all over the country, it looks set to be a very busy Walk to School Week: a week in which we hope many of you are taking part. Our work Living Streets has been working in schools since Our work has so far reached 1.9 million each year. Walk to School Week gets bigger and better every year. Just adding half an hour of walking into your day can make Strider, the mascot of Living Streets an enormous impact on your overall heath. Walking is known to improve concentration and improve mood. It s a brilliant way to have a catch-up with your friends and is great exercise. Why not see what events are happening at your school and throughout your community or try one of the many walking feats over on livingstreets.org.uk?

Teacher answers and assessment level guidelines The teacher answers are intended to provide a guide as to the AF strand of the question and possible responses from pupils working at different levels. In the level 5/6 answers we try to provide the most complete answer possible in order to provide teaching points when discussing the answers with pupils. Part A: Find the facts (AF2) A1. What is Living Streets? L4 - relevant points identified Living Streets is the national charity that stands up for pedestrians. L5 - additional relevant information It started as the Pedestrians Association: a group of concerned citizens who were worried about the rise of the motor car and the amount of children and adults being injured or killed on the streets. The charity is in favour of more walking and runs National Walking Month. A2. Why is 1995 a significant date for Living Streets? Possible answer: L4/5 - relevant points clearly identified 1995 is a significant date for Living Streets because it is when the charity first started working with schools. It is when the Living Streets Walk to School campaign was launched. A3. When and what is Walk to School Week? L4 - relevant points identified Walk to School Week 2013 takes place on May. It is a nationwide scheme which aims to see that every child who can walk to school, does so. L5 - relevant points clearly identified The week is part of National Walking Month which is run by Living Streets. As part of the week, events and activities happen up and down the country. This year, Walk to School Week aims to highlight the benefits of walking. A4. According to parents, what are three benefits of walking to school? L4 - relevant points identified 1. Walking to school is less stressful than other forms of transport. 2. They save money on petrol. 3. Their children feel healthier and perform better in the classroom. A5. Who, or what, is Strider? L4-relevant point identified Strider is the mascot of the Living Streets charity. A6. What is happening as part of Walk to School Week? L4 - some relevant points identified L5 - relevant points clearly identified Each day of Walk to School Week will focus on a different aspect of walking. Strider will be encouraging everyone to take a five-day walking challenge. Schools and councils up and down the country will be taking part and resources will be available. Strider will be making appearances here, there and everywhere.
Part B: interpret the information (AF3) B1. The writer admits that walking to school seems like a simple idea. So why is so much effort being put into promoting it? AF3 - deduce, infer or interpret information, events or ideas from texts L4 - appropriate inference To raise awareness of the benefits of walking and how much fun it can be. L5 - more complex inference with explanation In the article it says that many children and young people are driven to school in cars or use other forms of transport. This suggests that with motorised vehicles being so commonplace these days, many have forgotten about the benefits of walking and how enjoyable it can be. They need reminding. Walk to School Week aims to make people consider walking if it is a practical option. B2. Why do you think that the charity has a mascot? AF3 - deduce, infer or interpret information, events or ideas from texts L4 - appropriate inference Costumed mascots provide a memorable image for an organisation to help to establish a common public identity. So Strider is used to make the Living Streets charity and the work that it does, more well-known. L5/6-comments clearly develop explanation of inferred meaning Costumed mascots are often used to target children and young people in particular. As the charity has been working with schools and young people since 1995, it is appropriate that it has a mascot in order to appeal to that target audience. Indeed, Strider is being used to promote the Walk to School Week with his five-day walking challenge and the way in which he will be popping up for appearances. The charity also wants to focus on how walking is fun. Strider is a bright cheerful orange colour and looks like a cartoon foot with a face! His zany appearance is obviously intended to make the charity and its campaigns seem fun. B3. Why does the writer of the report include the information about what the charity used to be previously? AF3 - deduce, infer or interpret information, events or ideas from texts Possible answer: L4/5 - appropriate inference with some explanation In explaining what the charity used to be previously, the writer includes the detail that it started way back in As this was a long time ago it shows that the charity has a long history. This gives it status as it shows that the charity s views are long-held and it takes its work very seriously. Therefore it seems worth supporting the campaign. B4. Give possible reasons to explain why the Pedestrians Association changed to become known as Living Streets. AF3 - deduce, infer or interpret information, events or ideas from texts L4 - appropriate inference Living Streets is short and snappy. It makes it clear what the charity focuses on. L5 - comments develop explanation of inferred meaning A Living Street is a street designed to reduce the speed and dominance of motorised transport. The focus is on the interests of pedestrians and cyclists and there being attractive space for people to meet and walk around safely. Therefore, the new name of the charity explains what it is aiming for. Pedestrians Association doesn t give any indication of why the pedestrians need to meet. The new name makes the charity seem more purposeful.
Part C: Analyse the writing and presentation (AF4-7) C1. Living Streets runs National Walking Month. So why does this report just focus on Walk to School Week? AF6 - identify and comment on writers purposes and viewpoints, and the overall effect of the text on the reader L4/5 - main purpose and target audience clearly identified This report focuses on Walk to School Week because the target audience for this report is First News readers. First News readers tend to be young people between the ages of 7-14 which means that they are of school age. Therefore, the Walk to School week is aimed at them and the purpose of the report is to encourage the readers to get involved with the scheme. It is appropriate that the Walk to School Week campaign is the focus rather than National Walking Month in general because the information is more likely to appeal if it is directly relevant to the target audience. C2. Comment on the choice of the name Strider for the mascot. AF5 - explain and comment on writers use of language, including grammatical and literacy features at word and sentence level L4 - simple comments on language choice Strider is another word for a walker. Since Living Streets is a charity concerned with pedestrians and raising awareness of the benefits of walking, it is appropriate that the mascot for the charity is called Strider. L5/6 - some detailed explanation of language choice A strider walks in a decisive manner. The word suggests a forceful, brisk style of walking. The word pedestrian can seem dull, and walking is sometimes also thought of as slow and boring. Naming the mascot Strider draws attention to the fact that walking can be vigorous and this in turn makes the charity that the mascot represents seem more dynamic. As striding is more energetic than just walking, the name of the mascot also highlights the health benefits of walking. C3. What is the effect of showing Strider pictured by the London Eye? AF4 - identify and comment on the structure and organisation of texts, including grammatical and presentational features at text level. L4 - simple comment on the presentational device As the London Eye is instantly recognisable, it shows that the mascot is visiting London and thus supports the comment in the main body text that Strider will be busy visiting places all over the country during Walk to School Week. L5/6 - some detailed comments on the presentational device The London Eye is situated on the bank of the river Thames in London, the capital city of England. As a capital city London is renowned for being a vibrant place with lots of famous attractions, such as the London Eye, to see. By showing Strider by the London Eye it implies that the mascot will be visiting lots of interesting places and doing lots of exciting things during the Walk to School Week as it makes appearances here, there and everywhere. This makes it more likely that readers will want to get involved.
Part C: Analyse the writing and presentation (AF4-7) C4. What persuasive techniques have been used to convince the reader to get involved with Walk to School Week? AF5 - explain and comment on writers use of language, including grammatical and literacy features at word and sentence level AF6 - identify and comment on writers purposes and viewpoints, and the overall effect of the text on the reader L4 - some basic features of writer s language identified (AF5) - simple comment on overall effect of the text on the reader (AF6) L5 - various features of writer s use of language identified, with some explanation (AF5) - general awareness of the effect of the text on the reader, with some explanation (AF6) L6 - some detailed explanation, with appropriate terminology, of how language is used (AF5) - the effect of the text on the reader clearly identified, with some explicit explanation (AF6) Use of direct address you. E.g...we hope many of you are taking part. This involves the reader and gives the impression that the message applies directly to them. Use of rhetorical question. E.g. Why not see what events are happening at your school...? Makes the reader think about it and if they can t think of any reasons why not to then they might just get involved. Use of sub-headings and pictures breaks up the text and makes it look more appealing and seem more accessible. Therefore, readers are more likely to actually read the information about the campaign and be persuaded by it. Use of dates and statistics. E.g. Started in 1929, started working with schools in 1995 and has so far reached 1.9 million each year. Such information makes the charity seem well established and well organised and thus encourages the reader to support it. Use of adjectives such as great and brilliant make the Walk to School Week sound like a really positive initiative. Reinforcement of the message about the health benefits of walking to school. First the information is given from the point of view of parents. They have found that their children generally feel healthier and perform better in the classroom. Then similar information is given as a fact in the final section of the report. Walking is known to improve concentration and improve mood. This hammers home the point and makes it more believable. Repetition of the website address to make it memorable and thus easy for readers to access the information and join in with the events happening. C5. Walk to School Week 2013 is a Special Report. How does a Special Report tend to differ from other newspaper reports? Is Walk to School Week 2013 an appropriate subject for a Special Report? Explain your answer. AF7 - relate texts to their social, cultural and historical traditions Possible answer: L4 - some identification of features of a Special Report applied to the article. Some limited comparison with other types of newspaper report. L5/6 - features of a Special Report clearly identified and applied to the article with detailed explanation. Clear comparison with other types of newspaper report. The Special Reports in First News are feature articles. Feature articles are often written to entertain and inform the reader. They do not report the latest breaking news but instead take an in-depth look at a subject. Writers of feature articles have the space and time to expand on the details of the subject. Walk to School Week 2013 is more persuasive than entertaining, but it is informative. Also, it isn t breaking news as it is about a future event. It is written in-depth as it even contains details about the history of the charity in addition to information about the current campaign. As it is common for charities to write feature releases to publicise their events Walk to School Week 2013 is an appropriate subject for a Special Report. Furthermore, it is written in a style appropriate for a feature article.
