2 Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship Valley Rovers Premier Intermediate Hurlers carried on their good form from their last performance against Inniscarra to record a well-deserved victory over near rivals Bandon on Saturday night last in Kinsale. Bandon drew first blood with a pointed free after 1 minute. An Eoin O Reilly free equalized two minutes later before Bandon took the lead again on 6 minutes. Eoin O Reilly levelled matters again with a fine score from play. Bandon got two more points either side of an Eoin O Reilly free. On 13mins Kevin Canty rose highest to grab a Willie Burke puck out before soloing up the right wing and landing a beautiful point. A minute later Eoin O Reilly scored a spectacular point from the right wing to send the Rovers into the lead for the first time, a lead they never relinquished. Chris O Leary added a free which was quickly followed by a Bandon point. A minute later Chris O'Leary scored a 65 followed by a Darragh Looney well worked point from the middle of the field. Eoin O Reilly and Chris O'Leary added two more points with Bandon responding with two also just before halftime, to leave 3 points between the side. A lead that flattered Bandon on the balance of play. Valleys took the game to Bandon on the resumption with Chris O'Leary pointing a free and Kevin Canty scoring from play within a minute. Eoin O Reilly pointed a free in the 35minute with Bandon responding 2 minutes later. Kevin Canty & Chris O'Leary traded points with Bandon before Kevin Canty won possession and when bearing down on goal was hauled to the ground for a penalty. Goalkeeper Willie Burke s penalty was saved but Kevin Canty was first to react to score the only goal of the game to leave the score Valley Rovers 1-15 to Bandon 0-10 after 46 minutes. Bandon tacked on a free before Chris O'Leary when surrounded by three players struck the ball over his shoulder for an inspirational point. Bandon scored two more points with Valleys scoring three from Kevin Canty, a Chris O'Leary free and a Darragh Murphy point to leave the full time score Valley Rovers 1-19 to Bandon The Rovers now advance to a Quarter Final meeting with Kanturk. Senior Football Kelleher Shield v Clyda After winning their first round championship game against Carbery Rangers on the May bank holiday weekend, the senior footballers took a back seat for almost three months before their recent league game against Clyda Rovers. Clyda the only team to defeat the Rovers in their league campaign in 2014 (final) again proved to strong for the visiting team. While never more than a score or two ahead through out the game Clyda were to sharp for the visiting team. Clyda opened the scoring in the opening minute with a 45 and were two points ahead at the break 0-5 to 0-3. The second half was similarly low scoring with the home team ahead at the whistle 0-9 to 0-6. 3 U21 Hurling Championship Valley Rovers bowed out of the U21 Hurling Championship when they were defeated by old rivals Ballinhassig in the South East Semi Final. This was a game Valleys feel could and probably should have won but the more economical Ballinhassig outfit lead at full time and it is they who progress to the final. Ballinhassig started the better with the first 3 points, and 5 points in the first 10 minutes. Valleys gradually came to grips with Ballinhassig, with two Eoin O Reilly points and one from Colm Butler narrowing the gap. Valleys had a penalty saved before Chris O Leary grabbed a long delivery in the square and finished expertly despite two Ballinhassig defenders surrounding him. Valleys dominated the next 15mins with points from Eoin O Reilly (3) and Derek Canty (2) extending their lead. One minute before half time a mix up in the Rovers defense let Ballinhassig in for a fortuitous goal to leave the half time score Valley Rovers 1-8 to Ballinhassig 1-9. Valley dominated possession in the second half but found scores very difficult to come by. Eoin O Reilly, Eoin Fallon, Chris O Leary shared five points in this half to be leading by two with a minute left. As so often happens with a two point lead the opposition pounced for a goal with only their third score of the second half. Valleys did have one late chance to level matters but a free sailed agonizingly the wrong side of the posts and Ballinhassig enjoyed the spoils on the night. This was good preparation for our Championship game with Kilmeen which is fixed for Bandon at 7.30 pm on Tuesday August 4th. Ahan Gaels opened the scoring with a point from a free in the 1st minute which was cancelled out by a point from play in the 2nd minute by Adam Settini. Over the next 3 minutes Ahan Gaels won good ball around the middle of the field and scored a goal and 2 points to open up a 5 point lead. In the 7th minute Pa Hurley scored a goal and when he converted a free in the 10th minute the gap was back to a point. Ahan Gaels got the next 2 scores a point from a free in the 11th minute and one from play in the 12th minute. Valleys cancelled these out with 2 pointed free s one scored by Gary Deane in the 12th minute and another by Pa Hurley in the 16th minute. In the 20th minute when William Hurley put the ball in the net it looked like Valley s were getting on top but Ahan Gaels finished the half the strongest scoring 3 points from play to go in at the break 1 point up on a score of Ahan Gaels 1 8 to Valley s 2 4.The 2nd half continued to be a tight contest with our lads getting the only 2 scores over the first 15 minutes a point from play by Rory O Sullivan and a converted free by Pa Hurley to leave Valley s a point in front. Ahan Gaels got 2 points from play in the 16th and 17th minute and again these were cancelled out by 2 points from play in the 18th and 19th minute from the boot of Adam Settini. The next 3 scores came from Ahan Gaels 2 points from free s in the 21st and 22nd minute and a point from play in the 23rd minute to edge the visitors back in front by a point with 5 minutes remaining. Then came the vital score a goal from a penalty converted by our goalie Cian O Donovan. When Ahan Gaels scored a point from a free in the 29th minute to leave only a point between the teams a draw looked on the cards but our lads hung on for a vital win to edge us to the top of the league table with only 2 games left to play. Junior A Football League Valley Rovers Junior A Footballers took on Kinsale in the league in Innishannon on Thursday evening. Valleys dominated the match from start to finish running out winners on a scoreline of Valley Rovers 4-22 Kinsale 0-3 with the Valleys goals coming from Hughie O'Donovan(3) and Mikey Power. Aided by the strong breeze Valleys started brightly with well taken points from Katie Lynch and Maryanne Hawkes from play and Lisa Lynch both from play and frees. The Rovers hurled well throughout the field but good defending from Fr O Neills reduced their scoring threat. Piling on the pressure shortly before the short whistle Orla Deasy finished to the back of the net to leave the half time score 1-6 to 0-2 in favour of Valleys. The Rovers were determination not to leave Fr O Neills get a grip on the game when they had wind advantage for the second half. Valleys were first to score adding to further points and Orla Deasy followed up with two goals giving her a hat trick on the night. Fr O Neills continued to battle to the end and have a well taken goal shortly before the end leaving the full time score Valleys 3-9 to Fr O Neills 1-4. Valleys final game in against Clonakilty who knocked them out of the competition last year in the semi final. 5 Fixtures: Senior B Ch'ship v Fr O Neills Monday July 27th in Blackrock at 7.30pm. Senior B Ch'ship Valley Rovers 2-9 Mallow 2-9 On Wednesday night last Valleys played Mallow in Castle Rd in their 2nd game of the Championship. Valleys started well scoring 1-3 in the opening 10 mins before Mallow opened their scoring. However Mallow started to pick off points and held Valleys to only one further points for the remained of the half. At the short whistle Valleys lead by just a point 1-4 to 0-6. Mallow started the second half with two goals but Valleys battled hard and reduced the deficit. Valleys second goal came from Katie Richardson with in the final few minutes of the game to leave just a point between the sides. Lisa Lynch's pointed free was the last score of the game and valleys now face Fr O Neills in their next game in this round robin Ch'ship. 6 Valley Rover Ladies Football and Camogie Club are running a joint fundraising initiative called the Golden Goal. We are selling scratch cards with a time on it ( example 12 mins and 43 seconds). If the first goal comes in at this time in the All Ireland Mens Hurling Final the winner gets 500 euro! If the ticket is unclaimed, the 500 goes to charity. Tickets will be distributed by the coaches at training sessions over the coming week. Each family will receive 21 tickets to sell. Tickets are 1 for 2 euro or 3 for 5 euro. Unsold tickets should be returned as soon as possible.
