5 Formation Wide 1. Has a player in every zone in Defenders, 1 midfielders and strikers 2. Forces our team to play through the team and not direct Wide players make good soccer shapes in diamonds and triangles with central players 4. 6 It all starts from the back To get the team comfortable in playing from a goal kick To do this the goalkeeper places the ball in the center of the oal area (small box) The central defenders and wide players go wide and central midfielder and striker make the diamond Note: if the opponents mark up all of our player the K is encouraged to kick to space or the field players look to change places 9+10

8 Dribbling D Players have a ball each Players move with the ball with relaxed habits Challenge: Can they move with the ball without breaking a jog/skip 1. et the players used to the term PREP Touch 2. On the coaches call the players should PREP for 5 seconds with the ball and then relax 3. Have the player comfortable using PREP as they dribble close to another player Three cones 2x Orange and 1 Blue 3 cones to every 2 players Player dribble towards the Blue cones and PREP Change pace and direction to get around the orange Have them PREP with one foot and change pace and direction with the other Coach the player to do this in order 1. Relax in space 2. PREP and ENAE 3. Change PACE and DIRECTION Can they do it as late as possible? 11 Playing from the back- adding pressure C S One striker is added in Striker scores in the goal Players try to play out without the striker scoring 1. Serve the ball to the striker to establish transition 2. Add in a 2 nd striker 3. Remove the cones as players gain comfort Awareness of pressure Recognition of when to change the point of attack Can the goalkeeper create space by holding the ball C C 30x40 -two three yard counter goals Two teams of 5 1 K 2 defenders 1 midfielder 1 coach striker Team scores by dribbling through side gates or passing to coach in center Start with 1 defender Allow 2 defenders Allow 3 Encourage team to stay in their half with ball to develop comfort Progress to allowing more defenders to cross et up to 3 defenders as that is usual game pressure Take away the mid zone and free play Coach has a supply of balls and serves in to 1. Turn the defense 2. Play from the goalkeeper Ask players what's the best way to score Can they threaten with one way and then hit an opposite way Can they prepare technically to score in the correct way Have the goalkeeper hold the ball and play when pressure comes in Speed of play Recognize when to break out Coach in the flow at this point

12 Dribbling for Speed 30 x40 yard Area 1 ball each moving around 1. On coaches call players have 3 seconds to cover as much ground with the ball as possible 2. Players stop the ball before covering ground 3. Players perform a fake before covering ground 4. Players perform a turn (inside outside or pullback) Area 30x40 with 5 (free areas) three yard squares in the corner of the field and one in the center - 2 Minute games - Two defenders at first, If players lose their ball to a defender they switch roles 1. Players dribble in and out of as many squares as possible 2. Add another defender Awareness of space Large controlled touch out of feet Use Laces Body mechanics-et low and drive Awareness of pressure Awareness of space Change speed under pressure Recognize when to shield/ dribble Area 30x40 with a five yard end zone 3v3 Players score by dribbling the ball into the end zone Teams can only pass the ball backwards Team Shape Recognition of space Preparation to accelerate Final ame 30x40 with 2 five yard zones on side 4v4 players can have 2 touches in middle and unlimited in wide channel Free play no zones Awareness of space

13 Receiving and Dribbling for speed In groups of 7 each on the corner of a 25 yard square One ball Players move the ball as quickly as possible around the outside of the square following the ball to the next corner Add in a 2 nd ball on the outside 1 st touch receive Inside Receive on the back foot Use the laces for the 2 nd touch et low and ready to drive Large touch across ¾ of area Pass with the 3 rd Add in a 3 rd ball that is different color and is run across the area on the inside as quickly as possible Awareness of the 2 nd ball 1 st touch a large one and away from the 2 nd ball Communication becomes key Be ready to receive central ball with any foot that it comes to

14 Dribbling for Possession Objective: To improve each players ability to turn with the ball Area 25x20 3v3 with 4 goals T 2 goals to defend and 2 to attack Teams score 1 point for passing through goals and 3 points for dribbling through Coach the rules of the game Praise anyone that does it DO NOT STOP THE AME TO COACH This is your starting point In a 25x20 yard area each player has a ball Player looks to execute 1. Inside Cut 2. Outside Cut 3. Pullback Players dribble up others and turn Players kick as many other peoples balls without getting theirs kicked Area 25x20 1 ball between 2 players Coach says go and when they say stop who ever is in possession gets a point Attacking player walks in possession Players can go for anyone else s ball Play the 1 st game but coach the decision making Recognition of the goal to attack 1. 16 Playing out of the back Switching Fields Team switching fields successfully Player being invited in with a pass Area 30x 40 yards with a halfway line and counter goals 5v5 Each team has 2 defenders, 1 Midfielder 1 goalkeeper, 1 forward Forward is restricted to staying in opposite side of the field 1. With 1 ball per team have the players pass around their team (unopposed) 2. Striker must stay in opposing half- 1 player can advance out of the defensive end by passing to striker or dribbling through the counter goals Reset formation on ball going out Periodically the coach will restart the game From the goalkeeper From an outside defender From a forward inviting a player in (though side goals) Coach the team to provide angles of support Coach to attack with speed on one side of the field Coach the players decision to switch the field directly (long pass) or indirectly (2-3 short, quick passes) Coach may have to Join in and play to demonstrate getting open on the weak side or switching play Communication Coaching points Move to support as the ball moves Recognition of what side of the field to attack Awareness of strikers position Play the way you face when facing goalkeeper Angle and distance of support Supporting players open body shape to the field (don t turn their backs) Selection of pass- Long/Short Attack with decisiveness to create scoring opportunities or to create a weak side and a need to switch fields Speed of play Attack with speed dribbling threats Deception Movement of the forward to create a weak side

17 Passing- playing the way you face C Area 40x30 Two teams 1 ball Teams complete 4 passes and must score on the 5 th pass players cannot turn with the ball Do this with no defenders then add one If ball is out coach serves to the opposing team Progress to more defenders +gk In groups of 4 passing in sequence Players pass to get down technique of passing Both groups make 4 straight passes and on the 5 th pass twice diagonal Can they do it all 1 touch? Area 5 yard square roups of 4 Defender is restricted to square Players keep possession on outside If defender intercepts he comes out Progress to less touches play the 1 st game again but coach it Add in the rule that no player can turn with the ball If players can do this progress to only allowing each player to have one touch at a time Finish with 4v4 to 2 goals Play the game with no coaching Coach the rules and have the players keep the score Accuracy of pass/weight of pass Readiness to receive Position of non kicking foot Lock ankle-swing through and not across Timing Awareness of other ball Angle of support Early movement Communication Always move to the open side to make a triangle Play out of trouble Awareness of team mates Awareness of opposition When to go long/short Team shape Speed of play

18 Receiving C C Players work in lines of 3 Two end players are a 20 yards apart with one in the middle 2 end players can only pass to the middle player in front of them Middle player must do two things with the ball 1. Pass to the opposite side ( switch) 2. Pass to other players not in their line As the players become more familiar the coach adds more soccer balls This exercise should be pushed to being one and two touch We have added more balls The outside players can pass to players either side of them Check at an angle Inside Receive with shoulders facing the other way ( half turn) Have 1 st touch out of feet Work off this check list Check at an angle Look for an open player Receive ball and guide it in its new direction Pass the ball to its new group Look again at their two players either side Coach the players to check as the ball is coming to their outside player Coach the outside player to look in to see if central player is available Outside player has 1 st touch in the direction of the outlet either in or out Outside players check back from the cone to receive Look to players next to them if central players are not available

19 Receiving Primary objective: To improve the players ability to receive the ball under pressure Secondary objective- To improve the players ability to play away from pressure C C 3 teams of 3 area 30x20 - this game has a two touch maximum This is a restrictive 3v3+3 Coach plays the additional player in support If you have 10 have the 10 th play the coaches role Blue team are central team and have one in the middle reen team are the supportive team on the outside restricted to a side of the field If you have more use them as additional help to the blues Objective is to keep possession If the red team win back possession they replace the team that gave them the ball either blue or green Progress to playing 4v4 + 4 with 12 players Finish with a final game of 3v3 two touch Check at an angle Angle of support Inside Don t double support and block another players pass 1 st touch away from pressure Recognition of 2 nd defender to switch to the other half of the field Quality of pass Short to go long Central player always looking to receive with shoulders facing away Central player should play like the 10 and dictate play Outside Angle and distance of support Speed of play

20 Total Team Shape Technical Focus K Warm up- Area 30x40 Quality of pass/ accuracy /weight 5 4 Positions marked in cones with a player on each Balls and additional players start in opposing goal Communication Rhythm of 1 touch to receive and 1 touch to pass Player 1 dribbles the ball and passes to the goalkeeper and follows their pass The goalkeeper passes and also follows 1 st touch of ball in direction of pass Check away from cones when they get a visual cue they will receive 10 The next receiving players look to pass and follow to another position either backwards or forwards Object is to work the ball the opposing goal Add in 2-3 balls at the same time #6 Always Checks in 5 and 4 Check out/ back Early movement Open body shape- try to receive facing the other teams goal 1 Take away the guiding cones Coach players to be aware of other balls and play away from them D K M D Add a dividing line through the middle of the field lengthways and across and one defender Yellow defender scores in the goal Blue team score by 1. 21 Dribbling for possession Objective: improve each players ability to keep possession through Shielding Area 30x40 Blues Vs Reds All Blue players start with a ball 2 minute game After time the team with the most balls wins Team has the option of passing for support or shielding play a few times Coach the rules of the game Praise anyone that does it DO NOT STOP THE AME TO COACH This is your starting point In pairs with 1 cone Player 1 protects the cone and player 2 tries to stamp on the cone Challenge players to protect cone for a minute Have one player protect and the other can stamp on any cone Area 30x40 Blues Vs Reds All Red team players start with a ball Coach times 2 minutes After time whatever team has the mot balls wins Team has the option of passing for support or shielding 3v3 with a oalkeeper in a 30x20 yard area Restarts-are all pass ins Start the game with a pass into the forward or defender close to their goal Sideways on- lean into pressure Arms out for balance Keep feet shoulder width apart Change feet when defender changes direction Step across defender on changing feet Maintain habits above without the ball moving Maintain balance with 2 feet on the floor Do not put foot on the ball Keep ball in playing distance Recognize how to shield against 2 players Recognize when to support, shield or press Team Shape Coach players ability to shield and turn away from trouble

23 Playing into the striker Shadow play Forward moves away to create space- defender supports ready to shoot Area 30x 40 yards with a half line 5v5 Each team has formation of 2 defenders, 1 midfielder 1 goalkeeper, 1 forward Positioned like across Each team has a ball each and passes the ball around in their defensive half When the forward checks to the ball the team plays the ball across and the forward dribbles back and changes places with a team mate Coaching points Off the ball Forward starts deep- level with the other teams last defender Defensive half players play with their body shape open to the forward Players in defensive half play like an owl with their head looking at the forward and the ball TIMIN- the forward should be arriving and not waiting and should still be close to the opposing defender Progress to a supporting player ( not the passer) joins in and gets a support pass from the striker This exercise is shadow play so each team uses their opponents as cones and no tackling takes place On the ball Be aware of forward Quality of pass Selection of pass- Long/Short Ball passed into forward and defender supports The plus side of this exercise is that the players get success The down side is that with no opponents players can get sloppy with their passes Challenge players to do this with speed Older players U11/12 Speed of play can you play slow across and quick to the forward Early movement to support

24 Playing into the striker Possession and patience Area 30x 40 yards with a half line 5v5 Two 3 yard counter goals on the side of the field Each team has formation of 3 defenders, 1 Midfielder 1goalkeeper, 1 forward Positioned like across Coaching points Forward Forward moves away 1 st to create space (see across) Timing to come back and receive a pass Selection of surface as the ball comes in Defenders are stopping the wide players so the ball can be played into the forward Teams are restricted to their own half Teams score by 1. Putting together 5 passes in their own half 2. Dribbling through the side gates and back into your own half 3. Passing to the forward and getting a return pass Progression 4. Passing to the forward and another player receiving a one touch pass in the opposing half Be aware of forward Quality of pass On the ball Selection of pass- Long/Short Be aware of offside Older players U11/12 Opposite movement- short to go long- log to check short From here go to a real game Defenders are concerned with the forward so wide defender dribbles in

30 Switching play A oal and a goalkeeper is added 5 yards behind the two counter goals Have the players once again become comfortable with passing the ball in their W formation and include the goalkeeper Team Shape 1 st touch in a new direction Try to play 2 touches Using the halfway line as a divider play a possession game with 1 Ball 1 st one defender can defend Add in a 2 nd defender With each team having the shape of 1 goalkeeper 2 Defenders 3 midfielders Play to two goals a regular game with a safe zone that defenders cant be pressured in Play 5v5 to 2 goals normal scrimmage Can the players play away form pressure Can they maintain their shape Can they change positions and still keep their shape Can they move the ball across their shape and away from pressure Team Shape Awareness of opponents Awareness of forward pass Coach the teams recognition of which side of the field to attack
