What Parents Should Know LEAGUES All games will be played in accordance with the (FIFA) Law of the Game in conjunction with the Ontario Soccer Association s (OSA) Published Youth Soccer Rules, unless otherwise augmented within the Newmarket Soccer Club (NSC) Rules. These rules are available through the club website at The Newmarket Soccer Club offers leagues in individual age groups wherever possible. We reserve the right to combine age groups, if it deems it necessary to do so. Schedules will be provided for the leagues by the Club and distributed to all players. TEAM SELECTION Recreational teams will be populated using the following guidelines: U4 to U7 random placement, along with friend request information U8 and older - players will be placed on teams using information provided from player ratings, age and friend requests. The goal of this process is to create balanced teams within each division. If it is noted that one or more teams are dominating play within their division, the Club has the right to rebalance teams. Teams can be re-balanced at any point in the season. The team and player will be notified of the player movement and the player must report to the new team for his/her next scheduled game. In cases of disputes, a pro-rated refund will be available to a player refusing to change teams. Players linked via play-together requests will be moved together. EQUAL PLAYING TIME ALL players must be given equal playing time, during all games, to the extent that such is logistically possible. This will apply to all games during the season including Soccerfest and NSC Cup Games. A parent should report any discrepancies, in writing to the general manager. 5 P a g e
Long Term Player Development (LTPD) and AGE GROUP DIVISIONS LTPD is a program for soccer development, training, competition and recovery based on biological age (physical maturity) rather than chronological age. It is player-centered, coach-driven and supported by administration, sport science and sponsors alike. LTPD is not a new concept. It is simply an approach to create a great environment for developing young players properly to their full potential a philosophy that has already long been in place in the best soccer nations in the world. Our commitment is to make the game more fun than ever before for the recreational player and to provide better development opportunities than ever before for those with aspirations for a future in the sport. In short, it s about putting player-development first. At the end of the day, that s what everyone involved with our great sport wants. By ensuring fun playing experiences for children, a suitable player development pathway for youth, and opportunities for lifelong participation for all players regardless of age, gender, ability or disability, LTPD provides a framework for the growth and success of the beautiful game in Canada. Micro (U4-U6) Active Start (3v3) Active Start is a program that introduces the beginner to the game of soccer via a series of fun soccer related activities, where the coach is simply a facilitator who encourages all players. Players are learning in a safe, pressure free environment where the emphasis is on fun. U7 & U8 FUNdamentals (5v5) FUNdamentals continue within this age group as players are encouraged to develop within a small-sided game. The role of the coach is to act as a facilitator to guide the players and create an environment where players try to learn the game for themselves. Technical development is paramount at this age group. U9 to U12 Learn to Train (U9 & U10 7v7, U11 & U12 11v11) Also known as the Golden Age, players begin to identify with famous players and teams, and they want to learn imaginative skills. Repetition is key but creating a fun and challenging environment is still essential for stimulating learning. U13 and Up Soccer for Life (11v11) At this stage, players begin to focus on position-specific skills and physical preparation. It requires a fun and challenging environment but provide lots of activities to help contribute to an active lifestyle. 6 P a g e
AGE GROUP TRANSITIONS Moving from one age group to another can at times seem like a tough task, you just get comfortable with what is going on and then things change. With the new LTPD changes, it should make the jump up age groups for players easier to handle. Here are few little things that will help you with the transition: Micros to U7/U8 You no longer have support on-field every night from the mentor staff. The coaches are still allowed to be on the field with the players to help the players and manage the game. The field is also slightly bigger. All sessions are combined practice and game. There will be no referees at this age group. U8 to U9/U10 Players now move into 7v7 on a full mini field with referees. The coaches now must stay on the sidelines. As with U7/U8, it is still only 1 day a week with a practice and a game on the one night. U10 to U11/U12 & up Players have now fully graduated into 11v11 on a full size field with referees. Players now go from once a week to twice a week with a separate day for practices. 7 P a g e
PLAYERS EQUIPMENT A player must wear the proper uniform as provided by the NSC, including numbered team jersey, shorts and matching socks. A player must wear shin pads that provide a reasonable degree of protection and that are fully covered by the socks. A player must wear soccer specific footwear with rubber or plastic cleats. A player must not use or wear anything which endangers themselves or other players including: o Splints, casts or leg braces constructed of plaster, fiberglass, plastic, metal or other hard materials. o Metal Cleats. o Jewellery of any kind. This includes, but not limited to, necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings, leather or rubber bands or visible body piercings. Loose beaded hair is also not permitted unless tied back or covered by a net (Exception: Medic Alert Bracelets are allowed but must be taped. The taping should be such that the description of the medical problem is clearly visible). No bandanas, sweatbands, hats, bobby-pins plastic or metal headbands, clips or barrettes may be worn by players (Exception: the goalkeeper may wear a soft-brimmed hat provided it contains no metal or plastic parts). Only head protectors permitted by FIFA are allowed. Only sport-specific eyeglasses are allowed if they are deemed safe for the players themselves and for other players. Parents Responsibilities It is the responsibility of the Parent (or their designate) to accompany and stay at the field of play or practice with their child. A coach cannot transport or remain alone with any of their players; with the exception of their own children. Should the coach notice an unattended child, they will ask another parent to remain with the coach and the child until a pick up is arranged and completed. The coach will report the occurrence to the club office. Should the parent fail to prevent further incidents from occurring, the parent will face disciplinary action, which could include player suspensions and the possible removal of the player from the league. No parent, spectator or coach may sit behind the goal lines. No parent or spectator will enter the field of play during the game or at any stoppage of play; without the permission of the referee. No parent or spectator will sit or stand on the same side of the field as the players or the opposite players bench during games or practices. Spectating must take place from the OPPOSITE side of the field only and must be at least three (3) meters back from the sideline. No parent or spectator will coach from the sidelines. It is the responsibility of the parent to make themselves fully aware of the rules, policies and procedures of the club. 8 P a g e
Weather The clubs website has information on field conditions and availability. Check there to see if fields have been deemed unplayable and closed by the Town of Newmarket. It is updated on a daily basis. In the event of severe weather, coaches and their teams must present themselves in the vicinity of their playing field, at least 15 minutes before the scheduled game time, regardless of weather conditions. In the event of conditions which may be hazardous to the players and spectators, the referee and/or the league may suspend play until conditions permit safe continuation of the game. Only the referee and/or the club are authorized to postpone a game. The club reserves the right to shorten the length of any game, in an attempt to ensure that all games are played. The league may also cancel any games which, in its sole opinion, do not have a bearing on the final standings of any age group. A parent may withdraw their child from any game where they feel that the child may be at risk, but does not have the right to cancel or postpone a game. Referees and Assistant Referees Coaches, parents and players should recognize that referees are integral to the game of soccer. Under the Laws of the Game, referees are the sole authority on the soccer pitch during a match. But referees cannot see everything that happens on the field, nor will they necessarily interpret action on the field the same as the coaches, players or spectators. Referees should not change their call on the advice of a coach or a parent. Their calls cannot be influenced by intimidation from a coach, player, parent or spectator. A coach, player or spectator who yells at or threatens a referee is not maintaining a respectful and fun atmosphere for all concerned. No coach, player or spectator may approach the referee following the completion of a game. ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY: Any verbal or physical abuse of a referee or assistant referee from a coach, player, parent or spectator WILL NOT BE TOLERATED and will result in an automatic game ejection, and an automatic hearing which could result in a further suspension of up to one year, for the first offence. See the Discipline section of this handbook for additional information. A coach may address an issue they deem to be unfair with the club through the league manager of the division. The Referee is the sole authority for stopping or cancelling games. This means that if the field conditions become dangerous at any time before or during a game, the referee may stop the game at their discretion. Although the referee usually does this due to weather of turf conditions, it may also happen if the emotions on or around the field appear to be growing unsettled or threatening and the referee determines that it is best to stop the game immediately. The referee will file an incident report to the club. 9 P a g e
Recreational Events Microfest Microfest is our recreational festival style tournament for our Micro division (U4-U6) held on Saturday, June 13 th, Microfest is a fun filled day where teams play a game against a team from another night whilst also participating in other activities such as Live music, bouncy castles and other fun soccer activities. Soccerfest Soccerfest is our recreational tournament and will held June 20 th & 21 st, The U7 to U12 division will play two games on Saturday only in a festival format. The teams will be drawn against two teams from their age group to play two shorter length matches in one day. The U13 to U18 will play a tournament style competition where teams will compete in league format to determine two finalists and ultimately a champion. The headquarters of Soccerfest will be at the SoccerCentre (Club Office). All trophies will be presented to each member of the winning and finalist teams in each Age Group at this location. Division Championship The division champion will be deemed to be the team that, during the season, has amassed the most points, based on the criteria, as set out in the clubs policies of: League Standing & Tie Breaking. Please note: Division standings are only taken in the U14, U16 & U18 age groups which is line with LTPD principle of no scores or standings up to U12. NSC Challenge Cup The NSC Challenge Cup is an elimination tournament to be held on August 22 nd, It is held with a draw format that is completed randomly at the start of the season. An award will be presented to each member of the winning team in each group. Awards will be presented at the designated tournament headquarters. 11 Discipline The NSC deals with any misbehavior by its members through a discipline committee. The Discipline Committee will be comprised of an OSA certified Discipline Chair and two impartial appointed club officials. Players ejected (red card) from a game or accumulating three (3) cautions (yellow card) over the season, will be summoned to attend a disciplinary hearing to determine the length of his/her suspension, if applicable. A player, coach, team official, parent or spectator ejected from a game will be notified in writing of the length of their suspension, if applicable. Should an offending party wish to appeal the decision, they will be required to contact the club to receive details on the appeal process. Any player, coach, team official, parent, spectator and/or team may be subject to disciplinary action for flagrant or persistent violation of Newmarket Soccer Club or FIFA rules. Decisions of the Discipline Committee may be appealed, with cause, in writing, to the Board of Directors. The decision of the board will be final. Any decision regarding discipline and suspensions, which cannot be satisfied during the current season, will extend into any of the following seasons. Fields and Nets All fields used by the NSC are rented from the Town of Newmarket. The Town of Newmarket is responsible for ensuring all fields are cut and lined, this typically happens once a week. Nets are provided by the Newmarket Soccer Club on fields that are used for games; the NSC cannot guarantee that a school field or field only used for practices will have nets. The Newmarket Soccer do their best to maintain the nets but if you feel a net needs repaired or replaced please contact the club 11 P a g e
