1 GUS SPORTS PAGE Volume 22 Edition 9 November 2, 2018 Girls Soccer Edges Brookwood 2-1 With lots of rain over the weekend and then more on Monday morning, Bartlett Field was unplayable and the girls game, that was originally scheduled to be played at GUS, was moved to Brookwood School. By game time the sky had cleared and sun, cool temperatures, and breezy conditions greeted the GUS girls when they arrived in Manchester. GUS began the game with Mikaila Bennett in net, with a defense of Barrett D Orio, Sasha Milendorf, Gigi Richon and Emery Weber-Provost. Backing up on defense were Ani Stephan and Chloe Stevens. Stationed in the midfield were Q Kelley, Maia Monahan, Hannah O Neil and Anna Gibson. Backing up in the midfield were Hannah Gorton, Paige Walor and Eliza Loring. Lila Graves, Anna Mayer, Anna Leavitt and Zoe Moriarty rotated through at striker. There was a lone goal scored in the first half and it Hannah Gorton excelled in win at Brookwood. came off the foot of Lila Graves in the 6 th minute of play. The play was started when the hustling Gibson rushed down the left side with the ball and made a nice crossing pass into the middle where a well-positioned Graves was waiting and promptly put it the net. The rest of the half saw back and forth action with both teams having a few chances but neither was able to score. For GUS, Bennett made several saves as she continues to shine as a goalkeeper. The second half began with most players in the same positions, but with Mayer moving into goal and Bennett to the midfield. In the 35 th minute Brookwood scored the equalizer when the GUS defense got caught off guard, which led to a breakaway goal. The tie was short lived though as GUS retook the lead three minutes later on a goal that showed great teamwork. Kelley stole the ball at midfield, passed it to D Orio who then fed a pass to Gibson who scored on a nice low shot to the far corner. That would turn out to be the last goal of the game as GUS held on for the well-deserved 2-1 victory. Hannah Gorton, Barrett D Orio and Q Kelley each stood out in the game making excellent plays throughout. Boys Tie At Brookwood Carl Meyer drilled a shot from 25-yards out in the final minutes of play to even the game at 2 and earn the visiting GUS Boars a tie in Manchester on Monday. It was breezy and cool on the turf at Brookwood School when the teams took the field and from the opening kick Brookwood gained a sense of control of the play. In the 8 th minute the host team grabbed a 1-0 lead when they intercepted a GUS goal kick and converted it into a goal. Brookwood made it 2-0 in the 20 th minute when their striker lofted a shot from

2 the left side over the keeper and into the far corner of the net. The remainder of the half was scoreless and Brookwood took their 2-0 lead into the halftime break. At the beginning of the second half GUS seemed to pick up their energy and began to seize the momentum and control the play. Hard work paid off midway through the half when Mac Trotman found the back of the net. The play began when Will Brown gathered the ball on the left side of the field; he played the ball up to Carter Long who then centered a nice pass to the waiting Trotman who knew what to do. GUS continued to pressure the Brookwood net and in the 57th minute earned a penalty kick, but the resulting shot sailed high and GUS remained down a goal with three minutes remaining. GUS continued to apply pressure on the Brookwood defense, which resulted in Meyer s heroics in the final minutes. Brown, Cade Furse, Carter Long and Gavin Doyle spent most of their time at striker, with Meyer, Will Fogelgren, Sammy Parisi, Brady Patten and Mateo Geringer in the midfield. Marshall Aptt anchored the defense along with Ethan Thorn, Elijah Reulet, Morgan Proops and Michael Todd. Trotman spent the first half in goal with Furse between the pipes in the second half. Carl Meyer tied the game in the final minutes. Girls Blanked By Pike A very talented and experienced Pike girls soccer team came to Bartlett Field on Tuesday and shutout the host Lady Boars 4-0. The GUS girls showed excellent hustle and desire throughout the game but it was not enough to keep up with their visitors. Pike netted three first half goals in the 6th, 15th and 16th minutes of play to take a commanding lead, which they would not relinquish. They added their last goal in the 40th minute during the second half. The score could have been a bit more in Pike s favor had it not been for the stellar goaltending of Barrett D Orio. Making her debut in goal D Orio made at least a dozen saves, several of which were of the highlight variety. GUS used a lineup that featured Paige Walor, Lila Graves and Lily Westermann at striker. In the midfield Zoe Moriarty, Kate Ferriter, Grace Romanelli, Maia Monahan, Sasha Milendorf, Libby Pottle and Ryan Delay rotated through. At the defensive positions Maren Graves, Emery Weber-Provost, Sadie MacKilligan, Fionna Flynn, Morgan Brown and Chloe Stevens each took turns slowing the Pike attack. Despite the score of the game the Lady Boars played pretty well on the day. Kate Ferriter returned from a foot injury and was seemingly everywhere on the field making plays. Grace Romanelli played perhaps her best game of the year, and Sasha Milendorf made her presence felt in the midfield. Sadie MacKilligan and Ryan Delay each played well throughout the game. Despite the score the Lady Boars played well and and earned the respect of the Pike coaches. Barrett D'Orio played great in goal vs. Pike on Tuesday.

3 Boys Soccer Team Falls At Pike It was a cloudy and cool Tuesday in Andover when the GUS boy s soccer team made the trip to play The Pike School in their final game of the season. The game did go the way the Boars had hoped for in their last game dropping a 7-0 decision to a strong Pike squad. Pike did most of their damage in the first half tallying 5 goals on a variety shots. GUS played hard, especially the always busy defense of Ethan Thorn, Carter Long, Carl Meyer, Chris Foraste and Marshall Aptt. Mac Trotman was in net and made several good saves or the Pike total could have been higher. GUS midfielders Will Brown, Gavin Doyle, Mateo Geringer, Brady Patten and Elijah Reulet had their hands full and did their best to slow down the potent Pike attack. Cade Furse, Will Fogelgren and Morgan Proops were at striker and did a fine job helping out on the defensive end. In the second half Furse moved into net with Trotman moving to the midfield. Several others got opportunities in other spots and it seemed to work a bit better as GUS limited Pike to just 2 second half goals. Girls Tripped Up In Final Game The 2018 edition of the GUS girls soccer team finished their season yesterday on a cloudy and cool Bartlett Field. The opponent was Shore Country Day School, and they beat the host Lady Boars 2-0 in a well-played game. Shore scored in just the first minute of play when they were able to dribble through the GUS defense and place a good shot in the corner. After that the game was played quite evenly with neither team controlling the play more than the other. The GUS defense played very well with Kate Ferriter leading the charge from her sweeper position, and Barrett D Orio in goal who made several excellent saves. Also playing well on defense were Ryan Delay, Eliza Loring, Sadie MacKilligan, Maia Monahan and Fionna Flynn. Anna Leavitt played very well at striker for GUS showing good speed and ball skills. She had several runs up the field to put pressure on the Shore defense. Lily Westermann and Anna Mayer also played striker and did a good job. In the midfield, Hannah Gorton, Anna Gibson, Grace Romanelli, Libby Pottle, Hannah O Neil, Q Kelley and Morgan Brown each rotated through and showed hustle and desire.when the halftime whistle sounded Shore still held their 1-0 lead. Morgan Brown battles for the ball yesterday. To begin the second half Mayer replaced D Orio in goal with D Orio moving to the midfield. The play was much the same as it was in the first half with Shore again scoring early in the period. They scored in the 6th minute of the half on a nice shot from 18-yards out into the far corner. GUS sets up the defense against a Shore free kick.

4 D Orio and Gorton both played exceptionally well in the midfield, as did Ferriter on the defensive end. The play of these girls sparked the rest of the team to step up their game. In the end the Lady Boars did everything well except put the ball in the goal in dropping the 2-0 decision. Coaches Emerson and Burroughs were both very happy with the effort, spirit and hustle the girls showed not only in this game but also throughout the year. Anna Mayer, in goalie shirt, has the attention of the team to begin the second half yesterday. 5th & 6th Graders Play Wednesday On Wednesday the fifth and sixth-graders will play a pair of games with Brookwood. The girls will travel with Coach Summer Burroughs on a school bus to Brookwood for a 3:00 game. After the game concludes at about 4:10 the team will board the bus to come back to GUS. If a parent wants to take their daughter home from the game they must sign her out with Coach Burroughs. The boys will play at home on Bartlett Field under the direction of Coach Bruce Emerson. Their game will also kick-off at 3:00 and should be over about 4:10. All members of both teams will need to have their cleats, shin-guards, soccer socks and shorts. We will provide the game shirts for the game and collect them after the game. All 5th & 6th graders are expected to be at the game, however if for some reason a student can t make it to the game please contact Bruce Emerson.

5 Cereal Bowl To Begin Monday Next week the 25 th annual Cereal Bowl Soccer Tournament will begin. The teams will be announced on Monday, and then the games will begin. Play will continue until the Monday before Thanksgiving when the Cereal Bowl championship game will be played. The Cereal Bowl teams are Cap n Crunch, Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, Lucky Charms and Rice Krispies. All the 7 th and 8 th grade soccer players and cross country runners take part in the tourney. The 5 th & 6 th grade Fruit Cup will begin on the following Monday. This is an intramural soccer tournament much like the Cereal Bowl. The 5 th & 6 th grade will be divided into four teams and after round-robin play a Fruit Cup Champion will be crowned. One of the traditions of the Fruit Cup is each team creating their own team names. The name must contain some sort of fruit and is usually very creative. We are sure this year will be no different. November 8 Grandfriends Day Rehearsal 5/6 No sports 7/8 Cereal Bowl GSP Notes: There was an excellent crowd at all the girl s games this week and it was much appreciated. In fact all season all the teams were supported very well. It means a great deal to the kids, regardless of what they may say, to have people in attendance supporting them. It is tournament time in high school sports and there are several GUS Alums in action. Kellen Furse 16 helped the Manchester-Essex boy s soccer team into the tourney where they will play Lynn Tech on Saturday at Manning Field. Maddy Rostad 17 and her Hamilton-Wenham girl s soccer team will be playing Lynnfield today Duncan Moreland 16 and the Beverly football team has advanced to the second round and will play at Tewksbury on Saturday. The Beverly girl s soccer team will be playing Arlington in the first round but sadly Alyssa Moreland 17 a star back on the team will miss the remainder of the season and the upcoming basketball season after tearing her ACL a few weeks ago and under going reconstructive surgery. Alyssa is in good spirits and has begun her rehabilitation Kieran Patch 16 and Lincoln Proops 17 of the St. John s Prep football team will play their second round game of the playoffs tonight when they host Acton-Boxborough.
