Clearing Principles in 4 SITUATIONS
Clearing principles in 4 situatins (Nte: Flash mvies f each principle can be fund in the Level 1 resurce library) A quick clear after a sht: After a saved sht, the clearing team shuld be wrking t gain a numerical advantage ver its ppnent. Cmmunicatin is key - after the galie saves the ball he shuld yell break! indicating that he r anther defender has pssessin f the ball and the defense shuld nw begin cutting t receive and clear the ball. If the galie has the ball he shuld use all fur secnds t scan the field and determine the best passing ptin. He may: Use an utlet pass ver tp (See ptin D in the flash mvie) Pass t a teammate serving as an utlet n the wing Run the ball up the field t draw a defender and then pass t anther pen teammate Use the back f the gal t settle and set up a clear. The defensive player (wh culd be a midfielder r defenseman) furthest up the field when pssessin f the ball is gained, is respnsible fr cheating and has the freedm t cut straight t the restraining line t receive a pass. ( The defensemen r middies behind the gal r behind gal line extended shuld break perpendicular r at a 90 degree angle t the sideline depending n the psitin f the player they were cvering. If their player is up the field they shuld break at a 90 degree angle t the sideline. If their player is behind them, their break shuld be at a 45 degree angle t the sideline. When a player is breaking ut with a 45 r 90 degree angle twards the sideline, he shuld lk ver his utside shulder t receive the pass. After he catches the ball he can then lk up field and thrw acrss his bdy, r plant and rll if a defender slides n him t his utside. Anther ptin is t catch the ball ver the inside shulder. When a clearing player receives defensive pressure, he shuld always curl away by making a big turn away frm pressure and using the pen space n the field. One lng stick defender shuld be respnsible fr the crease area until the ball prgresses safely up the field. He is there in case an utlet pass is mishandled and an unsettled situatin is created with the riding team cming back twards the gal fr a sht. If the ball is redirected (pssibly frm ne side f the field t the ther), the crease lng stick defenseman can break ut at 45 degrees, verlading the side t which the ball is redirected. When the clearing team has t re-cut, the middies shuld break back t the sidelines and lk fr utlet pass as the galie retreats behind r redirects the ball t ppsite field US Lacrsse Caches Educatin Prgram
2. Break ut after a grund ball in the defensive end Once pssessin has been gained, and depending n hw many players respnd t the lse ball, generally thesame break-ut patterns shuld be used as thse used fr a quick clear after a sht. The ball carrier shuld lk up t the farthest player up the field breaking perpendicular t the restraining line. If the ppsing team is pressuring the ball, the ball carrier shuld run twards the sideline r endline, curling away frm pressure and lking t redirect the ball. Fr a pass that becmes redirected, the same patterns are used as well; the middies shuld be re-cutting t the ball. The galie n the clearing team shuld step ut behind the gal. Usually after the ball has been passed frm the clearing galie t anther clearing player, the galie is nt cvered by the riding team. If all clearing players in frnt f the gal are cvered the galie may be used t mve the ball t the ther side f the field quickly and safely. The crease defenseman des nt break up field until there is clear pssessin and n the redirectin can lk t break ut at a 45 degree angle t verlad the ppsite side f the field. 3. Clear ff a face ff twards the defensive end When the face-ff midfielder pulls the ball between his legs twards the defensive end and gains pssessin, he has tw ptins: Optin (A): He can pass the ball t the galie wh has stepped ut f the cage t receive the ball and scan the field fr quick clear. Optin (B): He can pass t a defender n the wing breaking ut twards the sidelines, wh then lks immediately up the field fr a pass r can pass the ball t the galie wh can use all ten secnds t make a gd clear. Optin (C): The galie can als lk t push the ball up quickly with the lng stick. The face-ff midfielder remains n the field either fr a fast break r mre likely, a slw break. Cmmunicatin with the wing midfielder and face-ff midfielders must begin with the galie. He must tell the face-ff midfielder t g back (pass back t galie) r t turn up the field fr the breaking midfielder r defensive wing US Lacrsse Caches Educatin Prgram
4. Clearing after a quick restart f the game Restarting the game means fficials have paused the game because the ball has been lst by the ffensive team either n a change f pssessin penalty r because a sht has gne ver the end line and the defensive team is clsest t where the ball went ut f bunds. In these situatins the defensive team will immediately be awarded pssessin withut a hrn and the whistle will be blwn within 5 secnds. The player with the ball then has tw ptins: Optin (A): He can attempt t push the ball up the field as quickly as pssible t his ffensive end withut any substitutins. Optin (B): He can redirect the ball back int the defensive end t allw fr the necessary substitutins. In this situatin the player with the ball must read whether his ppnents will als substitute n fly with his teammates r if his ppnents will immediately begin a pressure ride. If the ppsing team immediately begins a pressure ride, the player with the ball shuld cmmunicate that a pressure ride is ccurring and all players n the field shuld break back twards the ball t assist in the transitin. Regardless f which ptin the player with the ball chses: There shuld be a midfielder near the ball carrier t serve as a quick utlet pass shuld the player with the ball receive pressure frm a defender. Players frm the clearing team shuld be ready by the substitutin bx fr a quick exchange f clearing players cming ff the field. When a defender steps ff, a shrt stick midfielder shuld step n t clear with tw defensemen, ne galie, and fur midfielders. This midfielder can be a quick utlet while the ther midfielders cut t help clear the ball. At whichever side f the field the ball is cleared, the midfielder in the ppsite crner n the restraining line is respnsible fr staying nsides (i.e., he will stay back s that nly fur players (3 field players and the galie) are n the defensive side f the field). If a defenseman begins the clear and brings the ball ver t the ffensive end, the midfielder n that side f the field shuld still spread the field by keeping distance between himself and the defender with the ball. One f the midfielders in the middle f the field nw must stay nsides s the defender can cntinue t carry the ball ver t the ffensive end and t make sure ffsides is nt called US Lacrsse Caches Educatin Prgram

Executin: Midfielders set up alng ne side f the field, defenders n the ther. The middle middie and defender pinch in tward the center. Midfielder ges ne n ne with defender in an pen field situatin and the ladder mves up field with him. Shuld he nt be able t beat the defender, he shuld reverse the ball by passing t the galie wh acts as an utlet pass and then passes it t the defender n the ppsite side f the field. The clearing team then attempts t mve the ball up the field n the ther side. This is a mre advanced clear. The primary danger f using this clear is that lng ple defenders are receiving lnger passes. Executin: There shuld be fur defensive players (the galie, a midfielder, and tw defensemen n either side f the gal) in the defensive end, and three players (tw midfielders and a defenseman) near the midfield line. Caching Tip: Place the defenseman near the bx side fr an easy substitutin f a midfielder. The midfielder in the defensive end (this player shuld be yur best ball handler) starts with the ball. 1. He may g ne n ne with his defender, 2. He may pass the ball t the near defenseman wh can then pass t the middle midfielder. 3. He can pass the ball t the middle midfielder immediately. The midfielder wh just passed the ball shuld lk t set up a give and g situatin. 3 US Lacrsse Caches Educatin Prgram 2007
T imprve the decisin-making and passing skills f defensemen as they ddge attackmen t clear the ball. Half-field Balls Only 8-10 defensive players shuld participate in this drill at a time. Start three clearing defensemen in a skinny V -shape that is apprximately 25 yards high and 10 yards wide. Start tw riders n the tw defensemen wh are clsest tgether. A cach stands abut 5-8 yards frm the third defensemen and rlls a ball t him. This defenseman scps the ball and ddges the cach wh applies tken defensive pressure. As he passes the cach, the tw ther defenders cut twards him t create passing lanes, and ne f the riders leaves his man t apprach the ballcarrier. The first defender passes t his pen teammate and, after receiving the pass, this secnd defender turns up-field. As he des this, the secnd rider leaves his man t pick up the new ballcarrier, wh then passes t the third defender. After this grup has successfully cleared the ball, the defenders rtate psitins. 9 Ddging and cutting t create passing lanes Reading defenders t find pen teammates Clearing decisins and passes T increase the cmpetitiveness f the drill, challenge defenders t keep the ball frm hitting the grund--- give them a certain number f drps which they must stay under. T increase the difficulty f it, start with a smaller triangle s that the riders have less distance t cver and the defenders must make quicker decisins. 10 T imprve crdinatin and cmpetence f a team s clearing skills. Half-field Balls The first variatin f this drill shuld include n mre than 6-8 players, plus a galie. And, the secnd shuld include n mre than 15-18, plus a galie. If riders are added, these numbers can be dubled. There are tw versins f this drill, bth f which can be very helpful: 1. Withut midfielders: Start three defensemen arund the crease and a galie in the cage. On a cach s sht, tw f the defensemen break ut t the galie s wings and the third stays put by the crease. The galie utlets the ball t ne wing defender wh starts t head up-field. The third defender breaks up the field in frnt f him, lking fr a pass. The defender with the ball then rlls back and re-directs the ball acrss the field. The middle defender adjusts his cut and heads-up field in frnt f the secnd wing defender. The secnd wing defender receives the pass, heads up-field, and thrws the ball t the middle defender wh carries it ver midfield. 2. With midfielders: Start six defensive players (three defensemen and three midfielders), alng with a galie, arund the crease as if they were playing defense. Caches can pass a ball between them frcing the defense t adjust psitins accrdingly. On a cach s sht, all defenders break ut (ne defenseman t each wing and ne in the middle, ne midfielder t each crner f the midfield and ne straight up twards the face-ff X ). The galie utlets the ball t ne side. The defenseman n that wing receives it, lks up-field, and re-directs it t the ppsite side. As the ball is re-directed all players cut and adjust their psitin t create passing lanes. The secnd wing defenseman and passes it t the middle midfielder cming back t the ball. He turns up-field, and passes the ball t the crner midfielder n the same side. 6 US Lacrsse Caches Educatin Prgram 2007
C D 3 D 1 D 2 G Breaking ut, maintaining spacing, and cming back t the ball T increase the challenge f the drill, add riders (either caches r ther players start with tw and, as clearing prficiency increases, add mre) t cver the clearers. T increase the cmpetitiveness f it, keep scre as yu add riders. Full Fluxcapacitr Full-field Clearing 1-n-1s Up the Wing 7 US Lacrsse Caches Educatin Prgram 2007
T imprve clearing, passing, and cutting skills Full-field Balls An entire team, including at least tw galies, shuld participate in this drill at ne time. Divide players int eight even lines (as seen in the diagram belw) and start ne galie in each gal. A cach s sht starts the drill and the galie utlets the ball t the line at his right. This player turns up-field and passes t the line that starts at the restraining line. This player turns up-field and passes t the line that starts at the midfield line. This player turns up-field and passes t the line dwn the wing n his side. This player turns t the middle f the field and passes t the cach in frnt f the gal. The cach shts the ball n the galie, and the drill repeats itself up the ther side f the field. After a player thrws the ball, he fllws his pass and runs t the end f the line where he threw the ball. (It is imperative that all players cut hard t the ball t receive the pass, then turn up-field befre making the next pass.) x 4 x 7 x 5 x 6 G C C G x 2 x 1 x 3 x 4 8 US Lacrsse Caches Educatin Prgram 2007
Passing and catching n the run Maintaining apprpriate spacing and making apprpriate lks n clears T increase the difficulty f this drill, add a secnd ball. T increase the cmpetitiveness, cunt the number f times the ball hits the grund and give the team a number t try t stay under. By mving the starting psitin f players, yu can mdify this drill t fit yur wn clearing pattern mre exactly. Full Fluxcapacitr Breakut Drill 1-n-1s Up the Wing 9 US Lacrsse Caches Educatin Prgram 2007
