2 The Competitive Season Off-Season Cycle Off-season will start in the spring each year abiding by NCHSAA rules and regulations. Players will be given a strength training plan and a fitness training plan. Pre-Season Cycle Pre-season will start over the summer each year abiding by NCHSAA rules and regulations. Players will continue strength and fitness training. During the phase more work with the ball will be introduced. The goal is to have players fit, strong, and ready to start the season with team camp in July. Tryouts Tryouts will be held the first day the NCHSAA allows for teams to practice. Tryouts will consist of a 3-day process in which two teams will be picked Varsity and JV. Tryouts results will be posted online. Regular Season Training All training sessions will be planned and outlined in a session plan. All assistant coaches will receive the session plan the night before, so all coaches will be on the same page during the session. In general, sessions will last 90 minutes, have a theme, and will have a goal that is trying to be accomplished for that session. The training ground is where the team will improve the most. The team will train hard and compete hard in practice according to the program philosophies outlined later in the document. The Program The Program is made up of a JV team and a Varsity team; however, every player is part of the soccer program. Each team will support the other. JV It is very important to build and develop players on this team. We want the players on this team learning the system and preparing to be the future Varsity team. We need players playing, getting experience, etc. In addition, training sessions will generally be very technical in nature. It is also imperative to start instilling the values of the soccer program at these early ages. Varsity This team is the present and will be built to put the most competitive team on the field every night within the guidelines of the core values of the program. The goal of this team will be to continue to Philosophy & Core Values Page 2
3 develop players in an atmosphere that breeds excellence. The team will follow the philosophies and core values listed below, play at a very high level, and leave a legacy. Core Philosophy #1 We Set Goals for Growth Pinecrest Men s Soccer (PMS) believes that players will not improve if they are not setting goals and getting feedback from coaches and peers. PMS will practice the following regarding goal setting and feedback: All players will set performance goals for the season, each month, and each match. The coaches and players will record and track these goals throughout the season. All players will set outcome goals for the season and for each match. The coaches and players will record and track these goals throughout the season. Coaches will evaluate players after every match. It is important for the players to receive this feedback and to understand how to take the feedback and work to improve. Core Philosophy #2 We Are One #Brotherhood The team will be a group of young men who grow to want to play for each other. They will learn to give up a piece of themselves for the greater good of the team. Core Philosophy #3 We Are Technically Sound Technical, confident players can play anywhere and at the next level. PMS wants to compete at a high level in all matches, but more importantly wants to create highly-technical, confident players. A portion of training each week will be dedicated to being on the ball, meaning age and skill-level appropriate ball skill training (especially at the JV level). PMS wants to create players who want the ball at their feet, and we will train each week on these fundamental, technical pieces of the game. Core Philosophy #4 We Work Hard PMS players train and work at an elite level. When we step on the field to train or to play, we will be focused on the job at hand. When we are off the field, we will have fun and allow the players to be kids. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn t work hard. Tim Notke Core Philosophy #5 We Compete An element of competition will be built into everything we do. Positions and playing time will be earned! Philosophy & Core Values Page 3
4 When you compete with someone as good or better than you, you may not always win, but you never lose. Michael Jordan Core Philosophy #6 We Are Mentally Tough PMS will consist of players who are mentally tough. We will develop this mindset in everything we do. We will worry about what we can control and we will not let things distract us that we cannot control. Players will be worked with constantly on how to block everything else out and focus on the job at hand. There will be growing pains, but players will be required to be mentally tough. Players who get useless yellow and red cards for not being mentally tough will find their way off the team. PMS players will be known for being hard working, competitive players, not players who cannot control themselves. Core Values PMS will be guided by the following core values. The players will know these values, live these values, and play by these values: We are committed We choose to be positive We don t complain We work hard We take risks without the fear of making a mistake We play for each other - #Brotherhood We want these four years to be rich, valuable, and profound We treat everyone with respect We care about each other as teammates and human beings - #Brotherhood We are well led We are leaving a legacy Core Traditions The roots of the soccer program are firmly attached right now. The roots are strong and rich, but there needs to be tradition added that cements the legacy of the PMS program. The following traditions will be part of the PMS program going forward to help continue to build the legacy that is Pinecrest soccer: 1. Show me your Patriot Pride Each season, every player and coach will inform the team how he will be showing his Patriot Pride this season. It is very important for the players and coaches to support the Pinecrest Philosophy & Core Values Page 4
5 community in more ways than just soccer. It could be as simple as I will be at every football game handing out programs to as complex as running a student-led club. 2. Jersey time capsule At the end of each season, senior players will be asked to write a letter about what the Pinecrest jersey number they are wearing means to them. They will be writing the letter in the context of it being read the next season by the player that comes in and gets that same number. Over a course of many years, these letters will accumulate for each jersey number, and every few years a brand new player wearing that number will go and read what it meant for other players over the years to wear the jersey. Coaches do not read these. These are for the players and sealed for the next player to read. 3. Brotherhood There will be a special way we take the field each game that will be very unique to PMS. It will demonstrate our team unity and brotherhood. You all will find out about this at the first game. Philosophy & Core Values Page 5
