2 Learn to Train (U9-U12) Players go through their optimal window of trainability for Technique and skill An SAQ window is also present at the beginning and end of this stage for most players, and should be included in session plans. Basic principles of play are learned as the players come towards the end of this stage: Possession play, basics of defending and attacking, etc. Width, depth, movement off the ball, use of the body, communication, condensing to defend, spreading out to attack, etc. Individual habits should be instilled. TEACH THEM TO TRAIN!!!

3 Tactical Course Disclaimer We do not focus on team tactics during training. We do, however, instill tactical habits and abilities through small sided games, during game play, and other exercises. Technical work, ssg, and principles of play are the main focus. Tactics are to be understood by the coach, and applied by the coach to empower the players. This course is for us to be united in how we teach the game and to provide a common tactical setting within which our players can learn to be creative and to express themselves as players.

4 Game Tactics in mini soccer We aim to teach principles of play during games: Before the game with the team (using cones on the floor works well) While players are on the side (bench) speak with individual players With SIMPLE in game commands that don t direct their primary decision, but enforce habits and principles of play (Push up, get back, settle, head up, spread out, look to switch, etc) not commands of what to do with the ball, but rather intructions to remind them of what they should do without it. LET THEM MAKE THE DECISIONS!!!!! At half time After the game We teach tactics and principles of play during practice: By establishing a shape during small sided games and possession drills By structuring exercises to bring out the tactical elements that we want to drive home, while preserving decision making and creativity amongst players. Ie, various 1v1 games with restrictions Possession games that enforce principles of play: (spreading out, switching the play, attacking quickly, etc)

9 Pre-Game: Mini Soccer Check List - Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to kick off - Where required, coach sets up flags, and walks the field to check the nets, and quality of the pitch, looking for any defects, or hazards. - Any hazards or problems should be reported to the match official, and then to the facilities director (facilities@cumberlandsoccer.com). - Coach sets up warm-up exercises - Coach greets players as they arrive and checks their equipment - Players must have the proper uniform (socks, shorts and jersey MUST be proper) - Shin pads and cleats should be checked - No jewelry of any kind can be worn - Commence warm-up and prepare players for the match.

10 Pre-Practice: Mini Soccer Check List - Arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the session. - Check the field conditions as you setup your session. - Report any hazards or potentail problems to the facilities director (facilities@cumberlandsoccer.com) - Greet the players as they arrive and check their equipment: - Proper training uniform - Shin guards and cleats - No jewelry of any kind - Girls have their hair tied in some way (suggested) - Have the players start a pre-practice activity: - Suggest either small sided games, or keep away (3v1, 4v2, 5v2, etc).

12 General Mini Soccer Tactics: FOUNDATIONAL CONCEPTS FOR C.U.S.C is our basic, and initially mandatory fomration! Everyone Attacks, Everyone Defends We stay connected (from keeper to striker) We never boot the ball away We encourage individual Creativity HUNTERS on and off the ball! We communicate always! We look to switch the play (from back to front, and side to side)

15 Defensively General Concepts Everyone Defends! Stay compact and connected to defend Pressure the ball (hunt) as a team especially right after it is lost Win the ball constructively

16 Goal Keeper - Defensively - Communicates with the backs once the ball is lost (commands like: get together, protect the middle, see any players out of their vision) - Ready to intercept through balls or long passes behind the backs - Makes saves - Looks to distribute as quickly and constructively as possible (aware of options at all times)

17 2 Backs - defensively - Work together - Stay compact and connected with the team each other - Protect the middle above all. - 1 st player pressures the ball - Delay - Push the play away from goal - Win the ball constructively - 2 nd player covers - Ready to pressure a switch - Ready to help if 1 st defender gets beat - Around the penalty area, man marking and immediate pressure are key.

20 Defensively - Midfielders Drop back goal side when the ball is lost (and can t immediately be won back) Wingers inside CM gets goal side

21 Defensively - Midfielders Mids are generally responsible for their counterparts (Wing for Wing, CM for CM)

22 Defensively - Midfielders Additionally, midfielders: Provide back pressure (when outnumbered) Communicate with the striker in terms of pressure (where to press the defender) Hunt the ball!

23 Defensively - Striker - First point of pressure (pressures the defenders when there is a kickoff) - Directs the pressure in a specific and obvious direction - Hunts! - Scores goals!

26 Attacking General Principles EVERYONE ATTACKS! Creativity above all individually and as a team Brave with the ball Take players on 1v1 (when and where) Drive forward when possible Players should always be looking to switch and able to do so with their body shape and touch. With that said, players should above all LOOK to go forward: be aware, and WANT to go forward FAST!!!

27 Attacking Play General Principles Where should I look to play: 1. Play forward in possession. 2. Switch the play (play side to side) 3. Play back(wards) 4. Play into Space 5. Never use the word BOOT!

28 Attacking - GK - Starts the attack early and constructively (on the ground if possible truly on the ground, not bouncing) - U9-U11 league is set up to promote this - Quality of the first touch and first pass should be stressed! - Switches the point of attack and recognizes weaknesses or opportunities - Pushes up to support the play - Is used to keep possession and switch the play - Communicates Always!!!

29 Attacking 2 defenders Provide early width Protect middle and support the play once we are playing Use the keeper when needed and position to allow switching the play.

30 Attacking 2 defenders Be willing to use each other, and the keeper to keep possession and switch the point of attack

31 Attacking 2 defenders Look to play forward accurately, and if possible on the ground

32 Attacking 2 defenders Additionally, the 2 defenders: Should go forward to join the attack. One should always stay back with the opposing striker Should provide constant support and depth for their team mates drop off enough to get a pass back. Are encouraged to overlap and interchange positions OFTEN!

33 Attacking - Wingers - Provide width and angles to receive the ball - Go to goal when the attack is forming up the opposite flank - Provide width when the play is starting to be switched to their side - Show to feet when needed - Create space when needed - Hunt! They are confident to take players on, make runs forward, and drive the play forward. - Score!

34 Attacking Central Midfielder Occupies the center of the field Always showing and making angles Not OVER-eager to get the ball, but is always an option RECEIVES SIDEWAYS ON IS AWARE OF HIS SURROUNDINGS ALWAYS Looks to play forward, or switch the play as much as possible Supports wingers and striker Provides delayed runs into the box when the play is developing up the flank (a la Frank Lampard) Scores!

36 Attacking Central Midfielder When the defender is under pressure and needs help: The CM looks to show to feet and be an immediate option to retain possession.

37 Attacking Central Midfielder When the defender has time: The CM looks to make good angles in the pocket to both create space, and be an option to go forward

38 Attacking Strikers Provides Depth (in line with the last defenders... No closer than half) Is always making angles to receive a pass Shows to feet when needed Creates space when needed Gets in dangerous positions with and without the ball SCORES! SCORE

40 Attacking Corners Outside Mid or closest player takes the corner as quickly as possible Don t dwell on this much t he nearest player plays the ball in, as fast as possible. Usually it will be the positions mentioned above, just by nature. Find feet as soon as you can. Coach says: Find someone s feet! No Booting! Get the ball in play as fast as possible: Coach says go or ready-set-go, in order to speed up the process.

41 Defending Corners Defender on corner side takes away near post Winger on corner side takes away short corner CM Hunts in the center of box Defender and winger on far side defend man-to-man Striker stays up and pressure last defender (and keeps him honest)

42 Kick ins (or throw ins) Play as quickly as possible! Should be back in play within 3 seconds. Generally speaking the defender on that side takes all kick ins in the defensive half, and the winger takes all kick ins in the attacking half BUT!!!! Quicker is better, so the nearest person to the ball should always take it quickly and see if something quick is on. Coach says: FIND SOMEONE s FEET We don t boot, or even Serve the ball into the box. Find feet! Get the ball in play as fast as possible: Coach says go or ready-set-go, in order to speed up the process.

43 Free Kicks - attacking When in shooting range, shoot on goal. When out of shooting range, play as quickly as possible and find someone s feet. Get the ball moving. The kick should be taken by whoever is logically near the area of the set piece (ie: we don t need a free kick specialist taking a free kick near our defensive corner flag, when he is playing striker) Coach says: FIND SOMEONE S FEET We don t boot.
