2 RECREATION DIVISIONS Due to a now continual low player registration in the upper age groups the divisions for the 2014 season have been modified as follows: A U11 Division has been created with 4 teams. The U14 division was limited to 2 Co ed teams. Both divisions will compete with Rec teams in Montville and Norwich. U6 and U8 divisions will remain unchanged. PRACTICES The first day of practice is permitted August 1st. We are not able to practice prior to that date and all practices must be held at Griswold Soccer designated fields, for insurance reasons. Field space is at a premium so make sure that you use only the amount that is required for your team. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. FUNDRAISER NEWS The fundraiser for this year will be SpiritWare and Magnets that will be available at the concession stand. We will send more information in the coming weeks. REFEREE NEWS For safety and insurance purposes, no jewelry will be allowed on the field. Jewelry must be fully removed, not taped or covered. To verify sanctioned volunteer coaches, referees may check photo Id s prior to the start of each game. GOAL SAFETY NEWS Coaches, please be aware that it is imperative that the goals are inspected for damage and to make sure they are secured to the ground with sand bags, not bricks or concrete blocks. Coaches please warn all players and parents of the dangers of goal posts to include horseplay on or around goals, this includes goalies hanging from the posts. Please make sure that spectators watch the game in designated areas while providing positive feedback to ALL players. This is for everyone s safety and enjoyment of the game. Thank You. Issues with Rosters If you have any issues with your rosters and/or issue contacting parents please contact your division coordinator first. U6 Division Ramona Grey U8 Division Rick Silva U8 Showcase Game As a way to promote promotion to our travel programs we will hold a showcase event in U8 league. 3 Griswold Mission Statement It is the mission of the Griswold Soccer Club to promote the game of Soccer in the town of Griswold and the surrounding communities. The program is designed for all skill levels, motivation and capability with an emphasis on acquisition of soccer skills to enable the realization of a player's development in the game. The Club strives to set standards of good sportsmanship, fair play, and training excellence while providing guidance, encouragement and support of player development and providing opportunities to those athletes who strive for further participation on travel, state, regional, national olympic development teams, collegiate and/or professional programs.

4 Impact of Coaches I HAVE COME TO A FRIGTHENING CONCLUSION I am the divisive element on the soccer field It is my personal approach that creates the climate. It is my daily mood that makes the weather. As a coach, I possess tremendous power to make an athlete s life Miserable or Enjoyable. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor.hurt or heal. I can make my players hate or love the game. I can have My team work hard for me or We can work hard together to make Our team good. It is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de- escalated and an athlete humanized or dehumanized.

5 Silent Sidelines A SOCCER STORY... A mother was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her teenage son. Suddenly the boy bursts into the kitchen. "Careful! Careful! Put in some more butter! Oh my goodness! You're cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh my! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They're going to STICK! Careful!... CAREFUL! I said CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you're cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you crazy? Have you lost your mind? Don't forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the salt. USE THE SALT! THE SALT!" The mother stared at him. "What's wrong with you? You think I don't now how to fry a couple of eggs?" The son calmly replied, "I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I'm trying to play soccer." Each Fall and Spring playing season CJSA sponsors a statewide Silent Sidelines weekend. The Spring Silent Sidelines weekend will be the third weekend of May and the Fall Silent Sidelines will be the third weekend of October. Coaches will be permitted to give players direction from the sidelines. Spectators will be directed to refrain from making any comments to players, coaches or referees, but will be permitted and are encouraged to applaud efforts by all players. The goals of Silent Sidelines Weekend are to: 1. develop our players to make decisions on the field without sideline intervention. 2. improve the players communication on the field by reducing the outside noise level. 3. support our youth referees by eliminating dissension from the sidelines. Visit CJSA's Silent Sidelines page for more information.
