JOHNNY CHEN AND ATLEY SHAPIRO 1 INTERCEPTION EACH Three turnovers and 21 points made the difference in the 1st half. By Sam Roach Last Friday night at Sultan the King s Knights clinched the top seed in the 1 - A classification from the Cascade Conference by defeating the Turks The Knights opening drive covered 55 yards beginning with an onside kick recovery by Jace Fransen to start the game and culminating with a four yard run by Caleb Perry at the 9:22 mark. Jack Van Dyke added the conversion to give the Knights a 7-0 lead. For the rest of the quarter, the two teams traded drives that stalled deep in the opponents territory. Leading the Knight s offensively were Perry, Andrew Cline, Van Dyke and Luke Wicks. The Turks, running a Wing-T were led by Tanner Belcher, Andy Sam and Noah Fleming. In the second period, turnovers became the factor that would ultimately determine the outcome of the game. Early in the quarter, after Kings had turned the ball over on downs, Sultan quarterback Alex Perrigo was pressured by Will Daniel and Jerad Stretton and floated a pass in the flat that was intercepted by safety Johnny Chen. King s scored on the next play on a three yard run by Perry. Later in the quarter, Jace Fransen recovered a fumble at mid-field that led to a third Perry touchdown. King s final points in the quarter came on a 34 yard pass from Van Dyke to Brennon Blevins that was set up by an Atley Shapiro interception. Going into the intermission with a 27 point lead, King s scored three more times in the second half, the final touchdown being a 16 yard pass to senior wide receiver Brevan Campbell. Defensively, King s limited an explosive Sultan offense to just seven points, their lowest total this season. Leading King s defensive effort was Stretton with seven solo tackles, Wicks and Perry with five solo tackles each. With the victory King s ended their Cascade Conference season with league record of 5-1 and a 6-2 overall record. Kings has a Week 9 bye this week and will await the final outcome of the Northwest Conference to determine whether they will play Meridian or Nooksack Valley at Woolsey Stadium on November 4th.

That s right, it may be mid October but we are talking about the playoffs because Friday night was just that. Friday night s game was scheduled last spring and, at the time, it was just another Cascade Conference matchup that, at best, had its traditional roots dating back to the 1960 s. King s at Sultan...ho hum. Then, out in Sultan, things happened. A new head coach, Jim Kruckenberg was hired. Kruckenberg is a Sultan alum who has spent the last few years of his coaching career as an assistant at Glacier Peak. Yeah, the Glacier Peak that s experienced playoff success in the 4-A football landscape recently, that Glacier Peak. Suffice it to say, there s a new sheriff in town. He brought in the Wing-T and Sultan runs it well. They didn t come to the King s team camp last summer so the first time the Knights saw the 2016 Turks was at the jamboree at Woolsey. The Turks weren t necessarily world beaters there but they competed as well as King s did. From the sidelines, Andrew Cline made this observation. Wow. How did Sultan get so big? I don t know. It probably has to do with the weight room. In any case, it s obvious that the Turks like Kruckenberg and they play hard for him. Now let s not kid ourselves. This game was a playoff caliber game featuring two good teams that had earned the right to be there. There was also the added elements that it was both Senior Night and Homecoming for the Turks, raising the stakes even higher Going into Friday night, the Turks were 6-1. In terms of being a contender, they were legit. Their first game of the 2016 season was a 42-7 blowout at home over Ever- green followed by a 47-6 win at Cashmere, a traditional playoff contender out of the Caribou Trail League. They followed that up with a 35-7 route over Cedar Park Christian. In 2016, if Sultan was looking to get people s attention they got it done. And then there was King s, a playoff contender in their own rite. 5-2 record, the only losses in 2016 to Burlington and Archbishop Murphy, the latter incidentally, being a loss that was earned on the field not in a meeting hall, quarterfinalist six years running from 2009 to 2014, and state runner-up in Aside from ATM, that starting defense had allowed only one touchdown in Cascade Conference play and the offense had forced a running clock in all four of their conference wins. The winner of the King s / Sultan game earned the top seed from the Cascade Conference going into Districts. The winner would get to host either Nooksack Valley or Meridian. The loser would get to travel to Mount Baker. In the end, it was quite apparent that King s was the superior team. Sultan has a good team but they had no one to match Caleb Perry s speed and the Knight s defense swarmed the Turks in the second quarter forcing three turnovers that they turned into 21 points on their way to a 48-7 victory. Incidentally, if Sultan could have eliminated costly penalties, it might have been a different game. In any case, with the win, King s will host a playoff game and Sultan will travel north to Whatcom County. Friday Night meant a lot to both teams. It had excitement and post season implications. It had all of the elements of a state playoff game except elimination. So yes folks. It was, in a manner of speaking a playoff game in October.

5 The EMAK Report: Down on the Farm: J.V. Knights conclude season with 34-8 loss By Sam Roach At Woolsey Stadium last Monday, the Sultan Turks used an opening drive in the third quarter that ate up almost nine minutes to break open a tight game on their way to a 34-8 win over the Knights. King s scored first on a 41 yard run by Michael Gabelein. Gabelein also added the two point conversion to give the Knights an early lead midway through the second quarter. Sultan answered by scoring twice to pull ahead 14-8 going into intermission. In the second half most of the game was played in King s end of the field as the Turks used a combination of blitzes to pressure King s and force several more turnovers. With the loss, the J.V. Knights ended their season with a 2-3 record. For the remainder of the varsity season, all eligible sophomores who played in Monday s game as well as Gabelein, Luke Marion and Davis Campbell will be suiting up on the varsity squad for the playoffs.
