After an even first half, the Pipers controlled a good portion of the second 45 minutes. They fired 14 shots in the second half, but the Gustie defense was there to turn away every Piper opportunity, and held on to complete the shutout. The Gusties came out firing and scored their first and only goal of the afternoon 7:03 into the match when Amanda Cartony (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) took a deflected pass by the Hamline defense and beat Hamline goalkeeper Molly Jacobs one-on-one to score her fifth goal of the season. Gustavus mounted another dangerous opportunity midway through the first half, but was unable to capitalize, and took a 1-0 lead to intermission. The second half was the defense s time to shine. Facing a total of 14 shots throughout the final 45 minutes (six of which were on goal), the Gusties defended flurries of Piper opportunities. The defense blocked four shots in the period, and senior keeper Jessica Richert (Sr., Freeburg, Ill.) saved the other six on target to keep the shutout in tact. Richert tallied a total of 11 saves on the afternoon.

4 SERIES SNAPSHOT Saturday marks the 20th all-time meeting between Gustavus and Bethel in women s soccer. The Gusties hold the upper hand in the series with a with a record of , including 11 shutouts and a record in Arden Hills. Last season brought the Royals success with a 1-0 victory at home. The only goal of the match came with five minutes to go that propelled them to the win. MATCH NOTES On The Road Again After a string of three road matches, the Gusties returned home for one match only to hit the road once again for two more games away from St. Peter. Gustavus has won three of its last four games, and will look to continue the strong play in the coming road games against Bethel and UW-Stout. Close Game Fame - Gustavus has enjoyed a great deal of success in close games this season. The Gusties boast a record of in matches decided by one goal. The Gustie women have thrived in close matches, and done so in regulation, as Gustavus has yet to go to overtime all season. In the history of the series, the Gusties have only gone to overtime once with Bethel. MIAC Ranks - Gustie goalie Jessica Richert (Sr., Freeburg, Ill.) is ranked among the best in the MIAC in saves. With 77 saves on the season, the senior ranks second in the conference in total saves. Amanda Cartony also ranks sixth in the conference in goals scored (6) and eighth in points (12). Early Offense - Gustavus will look to get off to a strong start in the match on Wednesday afternoon, as the Gustie women are 5-0 this season when they score first. Conversely, the Gusties are 0-5 when giving up the first goal of the match. Fresh Start - After starting the year in August and in September, the Gusties got off to a strong start in October with a win in their first contest Wednesday evening. At the halfway point in the season, Gustavus is overall and in the MIAC. The Gusties currently sit in a tie for third place in the conference. Royal Visit - Bethel enters Saturday s match on a roll, winning its each of its last four games. With win s over Saint Mary s (4-1), St. Catherine (3-2), Macalester (2-0), and Coe (2-0), the Royals have put themselves in second place in the conference standings. They are led by Jessica Huseby, who has scored five goals and tallied nine assists for 19 points. Her 19 points puts her in a tie for second in the league. Royal goalkeeper Callie Roseland has been sollid between the posts this season. The junior ranks second in the MIAC in goals against (5) and fourth in the conference in goals-against average (0.75).

5 HEAD COACH LAURA BURNETT-KURIE First Season at Gustavus Overall Office: Laura Burnett-Kurie will begin her first season as the head coach of the women s soccer program in Burnett-Kurie, a 2008 graduate of Hobart and William Smith Colleges (NY), is the fifth head coach in the 30-year history of the Gustavus women s soccer program. A licensed member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), Burnett-Kurie was most recently the assistant women s soccer coach at the University of Redlands in Redlands, Calif. since August of While on staff for the Bulldogs, Burnett-Kurie served as the team s director of recruiting and assisted in all aspects of the day-to-day operation of running a high caliber NCAA women s soccer program. Redlands compiled a mark of overall and within the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) during her two seasons with the program. The Bulldogs qualified for the SCIAC Post-Season Tournament both years following fourth place league finishes. Before taking the job at Redlands, Burnett-Kurie served as an assistant coach for the Gettysburg College (Pa.) women s soccer program from June At Gettysburg, Burnett-Kurie assisted in all aspects of team management and was specifically responsible for the in-season and off-season strength and conditioning programs for the team. As a college player, Burnett-Kurie was a four-year starter and captain (2007) for the Heron women s soccer program from During her tenure on the field, she helped lead the team to the program s first Liberty League Championship, one ECAC Championship, and two NCAA Tournament appearances. William Smith went a combined within that time, as Burnett-Kurie became just the fifth women s soccer player in Heron history to reach the 100-point milestone, registering 42 goals and 18 assists over her career. After being named Liberty League Rookie-of-the Year in 2004, she went on to be a two-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Third Team All-American (2006, 2007), and the Liberty League s Player of the Year in In addition to her accomplishments on the field, the Durham, N.H. native also garnered numerous academic honors. Laura was an ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America honoree in 2005, a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree ( ), and a three-time Liberty League All-Academic performer. In addition to her responsibilities as the head coach, Burnett-Kurie will also teach in the Health and Exercise Science Department.
