3 AND ANOTHER THING!! - 2 FROM THE EDITOR S DESK IT S GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH FOOTBALL!! 2 things today: (1) DID YOU QUEUE UP TO SEE THE GROMITS RECENTLY? No, nor me, but I m certainly not knocking those who did, because the kids have loved it all this past few months & Bristol has embraced it all as a city. Some people might have thought it sad that other people may have queued more than 6 hours to see a lot of painted statues of a TV dog, but far sadder are those who queued for TEN HOURS or more just to get the latest i- phone when it came out a few weeks ago and will soon be passed by the next new phone! My one regret for the Gromits? There should have been a MANGO GROMIT. Imagine him in his Maroon & Sky Blue kit. (2) SPECIAL THANKS TO MUFC SUPPORTER DAVE BLACKMORE FOR THIS ONE, and it is just a very simple question really: What was the name of Captain Hook before he got his hook? FOURTH BATCH OF QUICKIES: Now did anyone notice the other week that 2 of the Braintree Town scorers in the 3-1 win v Alfreton Town were MARKS and SPARKES.And over in Holland, Ajax were 0-0 at half time v Go Ahead Deventer, but then FOUR goals in the first EIGHT minutes of the 2 nd half set them up for a nice 6-0 win. Mind you, listening to TalkSport the other week after both Man Utd & Man City both lost on the same day, you d have thought it was like a national disaster on the phone-ins afterwards. One defeat & they re all panicking. Come and try supporting the 2 Bristol clubs, Mancastrians, then you ll know what PROPER panicking is, because fans of our 2 clubs have been doing it for years.and then you do wonder how indicative statistics are about a game. Take Bristol City v Colchester the other week. According to the Bristol (Evening) Post, City had 23 goal attempts (including 8 on target), whilst Colchester had just 8 goal attempts in total but in the Sunday Independent, where home players are marked with X stars out of 5, City s best player was said to be the GOALKEEPER Eliot Parish who had 4 stars out of 5, whilst everyone else had 2 or 3!! But what do the statistics matter to City fans when your team STILL cannot win?...so who do you blame when the match report in the Non-League Paper says, MUFC 3, Slough Town 1 instead of v Thatcham Town, as they were told. Can t anyone get anything right??!!! ANYONE WATCH CELTIC v BARCELONA RECENTLY?? Not the greatest spectacle was it, although it did liven up after half time with the sending off & the late Barca goal, but the latter killed the game anyway, that was it, game over. Now I wondered why ITV showed this game on mainstream TV in ENGLAND in the first place? The answer is obvious, I suppose Celtic did really well v Barcelona last season & it was the chance for the masses to see Barca in action again. But does an English person REALLY want to see a Scottish team live when other English clubs were in action in the same tournament on the same night? No and if Scotland gets its independence in the future, that s an even bigger reason for NOT showing Celtic live on ENGLISH TV. AND THEN THERE WAS THE GAME ITSELF YAWN! I see a number of MUFC fans criticize Barcelona on football forums for their tippy tappy style of play, because it becomes boring & it s not hard to see why. They continuously pass the ball backwards & forwards between themselves constantly, without ever making up much ground, passing the ball up to 30 times as they look for an opening. Yes, of course Barca are a great side & have been for a few seasons now, but their style of football needs freshening up in some way, because their tippy-tappy football is fast becoming irritating. Celtic spent most of the game trying to get the ball off Barcelona (who had over 70% possession) & when they did, they wasted the few chances that came their way & Barca later punished them with one of their quick break-outs. That was enough to win a game which looked great on paper even without Messi but also was to become as dull as watching a chess match, because one of the sides was so damned good at keeping possession all the time, which was enough to frustrate their opponents as well as the home crowd. So should Barcelona start playing Route 1 instead? Probably not, because Route 1 (or Hoof it as we fans call it!!) gets criticized enough as it is, but there needs to be a balance somewhere between the 2 styles because even the tippy-tappy passing game employed by Barcelona (one of the best club sides we ve seen in a long time) is sending certainly at least this fan to sleep. THE FIELD MARSHALL FIELD REVIEW - 24 After the FA Trophy win against Thatcham Town, we were hopeful of carrying that form into the clash against division leaders NORTH LEIGH, but The Millers showed that they will be a difficult side to beat this season and will surely be in the mix at the end of the season. It could be said that we gave them all the help they needed, conceding an own goal and a penalty, and for RYAN BENNETT it was probably an afternoon he would rather forget! One person asked if perhaps Ryan had created some sort of a record for the club in that, he scored our goal, got himself booked, gave away a penalty and was then sent off! Possibly, but don t worry Ryan. Football can be like that at times and we do still love ya! (wherever you will be playing in the future). The side, as a whole created very little and KEVIN SAWYER was the busiest of the keepers. TOM PARRINELLO, under pressure put the ball into his own net to put The Millers on level terms and their late spot-kick sealed the game. Worryingly, we had another poor gate of 106, it was our second home defeat so far this campaign and we had another player sent off. We know that this side has been underachieving because we do realise the potential that we have, but losing players due to suspension has been hurting us a lot. Heading to Meadowbank for the Trophy clash with SHORTWOOD UNITED & missing SHAUN LAMB, LUKE BALLINGER & LEWIS POWELL, we needed someone to step up and take responsibility for finding the net, and JOSH EGAN duly obliged with a brace, which included a rather spectacular second goal from almost thirty yards! The potential of the side, at last came together with a superb victory at Fairfax Park as previously unbeaten BRIDGWATER TOWN, were despatched 3-0. It was our 3 rd away win in succession, with BEN HUNT scoring two and MATT SYSUM getting the opener. It pushed us into 10 th place in the table, and was the marker after 10 league games, when managers like to assess their side. FIELD REVIEW - 1 As if we needed further proof, the lads then went to EVESHAM UTD and secured their 4 th away win on the bounce, again with a 3-0 scoreline. Incredibly, we had to do it the hard way when KEVIN SAWYER was sent off in the 55 th minute, although most observers claim it it seemed a very harsh decision. It became our 5 th dismissal of the season. It was down to RYAN BATH to go in goal and with a little bit of luck and some tenacious defending, he kept a clean sheet! Our goals came from RYAN BATH (before his heroics between the sticks), BEN HUNT and JOSH EGAN. It was a defeat for Evesham which saw the end of their manager s reign. We were hoping for a repeat performance against TIVERTON at Ladysmead in the FA Carlsberg Trophy, but it was not our day and we never really got into the game and crashed out by 1-3! Our defence of the Gloucestershire Senior Challenge Trophy started at BISHOPS CLEEVE, whom we, of course, welcome to The Glass Consultants UK Stadium today. After a first round bye, we won the quarter- final tie 2-0 with an early goal from LUKE BALLINGER and a very late strike from LEWIS POWELL. We had to do it without RYAN BENNETT, who made the decision to leave the club. We are sorry to see him go and we wish him all the best and thank him for his efforts on our behalf. WIMBORNE TOWN have strengthened in the close season and were yet another side unbeaten at home in the league. As a team we gelled from the start and sealed the points with a 75 th minute strike from LEWIS POWELL. A great performance all around and a result which keeps us halfway in the table and not that far off a play-off place. Thankyou all for your support, especially The Ultras behind the dug-out. So, remember the cry COME ON THE FIELD Or if you prefer COME ON THE MIGHTY MANGOS!! Don t forget STRATFORD TOWN are here on Tuesday! A Warm welcome to The Mitres! EDITOR

4 For Life Insurance, Pensions and Savings Contact or Roman Glass, 332, Two Mile Hill Road, Kingswood Bristol Marcus Hudd, AND ANOTHER THING!! -1 Plenty to chat about today, & some of it s a few weeks old, so let s crack on without further ado: FIRST BATCH OF QUICKIES: Now I did hear recently that all Swindon players & officials had left our ground by 5.30pm a fair few Saturdays ago, which is indeed quick, following the end of the game. Now I don t know how true that is because I was well home by 5.30pm myself anyway! But assuming it was true, then there could be one of 3 reasons why they supposedly left early: (1) Perhaps they were just a little disappointed at losing the game in the way they did? (2) Perhaps they had something else on to get back to Swindon for ASAP; or (3), perhaps they left early to go & join the lengthy queues that weekend to see the Gromits!!...Meanwhile, it has also been reported that Clevedon Town s recent home gate of just 84 v Guildford City was their lowest ever Saturday home attendance for a league match since they moved to the Hand Stadium around 20 or so years ago. This was also the club s first Saturday home game since the club was re-branded by their powers-that-be in more ways than one (new kit, new website, new club badge etc), so perhaps that low attendance figure sent out a certain type of message on its own Now TalkSport was quite lively recently following the Manchester derby, as fans from both clubs rang in, either elated or deflated, but one United fan (and I don t think he came from Croydon this time) took the 4-1 defeat really badly, and stated that his side wouldn t even finish in the top 6 this season, which means that they d only just get into the Europa League next season! Man Utd not in the top 6 come May? Surely not? This was just 1 defeat, but it was later followed by the equally poor WBA defeat.. SECOND BATCH QUICKIES: So there ll be no Bradford City-style fairy tale story of a little team getting through to the League Cup Final this season it ll surely be one of the big boys who ll win it now, especially as most of them seem to be taking it more seriously so far this season Mind you, I did like the comment on the radio made when the Arsenal line-up was announced for their League Cup trip to West Brom Blimey, this Arsenal line-up s so young, I doubt if most of them have even started shaving yet..but what would have been interesting was to have been a fly on the wall when Bristol City head coach Sean O Driscoll no doubt chatted to Southampton s stillcan t-speak-english manager Mauricio Pochettino after the game you d have one head coach not being able to UNDERSTAND a word the other guy was saying, and you d have had the other guy not being able to HEAR what the visiting head coach was saying. Meanwhile, I watched about half of the recent England v Turkey women s international, which ended 8-0 & OK, maybe the Turkish girls were not the strongest opponents England could have faced, but you can only try & beat what is in front of you. Bottom line, though, was that it was nice just for once to watch an England game with some spark about it, but that was pre-montenegro & pre-poland, after all THIRD BATCH OF QUICKIES: Well, it sure was BIG MOAN time for some fans on Radio Bristol after the recent City & Rovers defeats by Peterborough & Dagenham and Redbridge respectively what a state our 2 clubs have been in since the season began.there were some odd goingson in European football recently, weren t there Inter Milan winning 7-0 away from home in a Serie A match (and when was the last time ANY Italian side scored 7 in a game?? It s not in their nature, is it?); Ajax getting hammered 4-0 by PSV Eindhoven & then despite beating Rayo Vallecano 4-0, Barcelona finished the match by having less possession than their opponents, for the first time in 317 games! Remarkable, but more on them later. Watched another of those Big Match Revisited shows on ITV4 the other day, this one featured Fulham v Carlisle on a truly shocking mud heap of a pitch in 1983 (did these clubs ever employ any sort of grounds men in those days??!!), but it was also interesting to see Fulham boss Malcolm MacDonald SMOKING A CIGAR in the dugout Meanwhile, one advertising jingle for a radio show on TalkSport claims that the show covers football from Falmouth to Fife. Rubbish. All they ever talk about on that show is the top end of the Premier League & I doubt if they have even heard of Falmouth Town England are through to Brazil 2014, of course, so let s enjoy the moment of qualifying & hope that our side a good mix of youth & experience can impress next summer. None of us do wild predictions any more re England, but let s see what they can do, and leave it at that but it just shows what a funny game it is when Ukraine go & score 8 in their final game, yet they still didn t qualify first time around And Brazil 2014 reminds this scribe of Brazil 1970 when I was watching 11pm kickoffs with a school book on my lap with an O Level due the following morning. 8 MUFC - SECONDARY SPONSORS WHAT THE PAPERS SAY THE LADS ARE DEVASTATED. WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE LEAGUE TABLE, IT MAKES YOUR HEART SINK. The words of Sheffield United defender Harry Maguire, as quoted in The Sun on 30 September 2013, after the Blades lost 2-0 at Wolves & dropped to the bottom of League One. Manager David Weir lasted just another week before he was sacked. I think Bristol City fans will more than identify with that quote above, with the season they re having! But aside from a woeful league season, I think that, come the season s end, whatever happens and some City fans truly fear the worst, even now the 2-1 defeat at Wycombe in the JPT Trophy will come back to haunt them. Mickey Mouse cup? Maybe, but City have reached the final of that tournament several times in the past. They first won it 1986, beating Bolton 3-0 at Wembley in front of 54,000. It was not a Mickey Mouse Cup on that particular day. I remember it as being a wonderful day out from start to finish, with the right result & it was a truly memorable moment for me as a football fan. It wasn t quite the same in the following year s Final, but that was down to City wearing a different, one-off kit & it jinxed us big time. City also won the trophy in 2003, though not at Wembley & they ve also been losing finalists twice, so clearly, it is something to be taken seriously. Besides, if it s been not a great season for the Robins fans (and many would say that this season is a disaster so far), then the JP Trophy does keep the interest going for everyone; there s a place at Wembley up for grabs and all the rest of it, so why did SOD field a weakened side at Wycombe when City had no league game for TEN DAYS?? OK, there were one or two injuries, but he did not field anything like his strongest possible side on the night & City paid the price for a poor very first half performance. League 2 Wycombe also fielded a weakened side, which is their choice to do so, but City STILL could not beat them. Dear oh dear Interestingly, 2 days after the Sheffield United sacking, Gillingham did likewise with manager Martin Allen, following a 2-0 defeat at Shrewsbury. Another struggling club, who obviously decided enough was enough, and they did it whilst there was still time to do something about it. And here s another quote that Bristol City fans can identify with: IF ANYONE THOUGHT THAT COMING INTO THIS DIVISION WOULD BE EASY, THEN THEY KNOW DIFFERENT NOW. Those were the words of Rotherham defender Pablo Mills, as quoted in The Sun on 14 October 2013, following the Millers 4-0 lesson-learning home defeat by Swindon. For City fans, there were no visions of grandeur for the about going straight back up to the Championship, like Wolves & Peterborough probably will. It was all about stopping the rot & consolidating after several years of struggle. Not happened yet, has it? And with FA Cup Round 1 fast approaching, was there any truth in the views of some City fans that they were DESPERATE to be drawn against a League 1 or 2 side, home or away, instead of a nonleague side, so that the embarrassment of going out of the Cup in Round 1 (again) would be slightly more acceptable?? PLAYERS AND YOUNG PEOPLE DO MAKE MISTAKES. I MADE A MISTAKE. I SPOKE TO THE BOSS ABOUT IT AND WE SORTED IT OUT. HE PUT ME IN THE TEAM ON THE FOLLOWING SUNDAY AND I REPAID HIM WITH A GOAL, SO HOPEFULLY, IT IS ALL DONE NOW. The words of Arsenal s Jack Wilshere, as quoted in the Metro on 9 October 2013, after he had been photographed smoking a cigarette inside a night club in the early hours a few days beforehand. Yes, it was a mistake, being caught smoking like that, but young person or not, Wilshere had recently become a father, so what was he doing out night-clubbing in the first place? These young players are in the media eye all the time. Photographers are everywhere. No one s expecting him to sit at home & read War and Peace every night, or update his stamp collection like a good little boy; he is going to want to go out to places where other young people go & that s never going to stop. Just use some common sense next time! FIELD REVIEW - 21

9 MOMENTS IN FOOTBALL This article contains rare archive photographs from the Press Association, many unseen for decades. They have been taken from the book 100 Years of Football, by ROBIN McKELVIE & JENNY McELVIE and we duly acknowledge their work and thank them for allowing their use. ALEXANDER WILSON JAMES was born in September 1901 and died when only 52. He was a Scottish footballer who was most noted for his successwith Arsenal. He is pictured holding the FA Cup aloft in 1936 when, as Captain, Arsenal had beaten Sheffield United 1-0, the scorer being Ted Drake. He was regarded as one of the alltime greats, arguably the greatest. As a midfielder, his passing and supreme ball control, led many to compare him with players like Dennis Bergkamp. Because he suffered from rheumatism, he wore baggy shorts, to hide his long johns, which he wore, simply to keep warm. The baggy appearance became his trademark. Alex James left Preston N.End for Herbert Chapman s Arsenal in 1929 for 8,750, making his debut against Leeds United in August In order to circumvent the maximum wages rule, Arsenal arranged that his employement at the club was supplemented by a 250-a-year sports demonstrator job at Selfridges, the London department store. Over time he settled into his role and became part of England s dominant side of the 1930s. Because he played so deep as a supporting player, he scored relatively few goals for the Gunners only 27 in 261 appearances but he created many times that number. James s passing and vision supplied the ammunition that David Jack, Cliff Bastin, Ted Drake and Jack Lambert all put into the net. James helped Arsenal to their first ever First Division Championship in 1930/31, but he was injured during the title race the following year, and without him Arsenal finished second behind Everton and lost the 1932 FA Cup Final to Newcastle United. He recovered to help Arsenal to a second title in 1932/33, as they scored a club record 118 goals in the league that season. Although Arsenal retained their title in 1933/34, it was without a thenagain injured James and they scored far fewer goals, 75. He recovered from injury and they won a fourth title and a third in a row, in 1934/35. They did it in style with Ted Drake scoring 42 league goals that season, many of them supplied by James. The following season, he won a second FA Cup winners medal, as mentioned above, captaining the Arsenal side to that 1-0 win against Sheffield United. BISHOPS CLEEVE FC In their long history, Bishops Cleeve have wandered about more than most clubs, but at long last, they have their very own, new stadium. For many years, they played on a ground in Stoke Road. Facilities were all rebuilt and re-opened in 1971, by Ted Croker, who was then Secretary of the Football Association. However, in 1995, their landlords, the Church Commissioners, sold the land for housing and so Bishops Cleeve FC, became homeless. On the pitch, Cleeve soon became regular champions. When they left their Cheltenham League roots for the first time, they won four championships in their six seasons in the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League. After dropping back to the Cheltenham League, Cleeve gained promotion to the Hellenic League in They quickly established themselves as a force to be reckoned with, finishing 4 th in their first two seasons in Division One. They followed this by finishing 3 rd and then as Champions. The five seasons in the Hellenic League Premier Division were a struggle, although they did win a trophy, - the Premier Division Cup during that time. Returning to Division One, Cleeve then had a period of re- building both on and off the field. In order to preserve their Hellenic League status, the club entered into several groundsharing agreements and the grounds of Moreton Town, Wollen Sports at Highworth, and Forest Green Rovers, were all called home at one time or another. During this difficult time, the club was kept alive by the efforts of a few devoted members, spearheaded by former Cheltenham Town legend, Dave Lewis, whose efforts were recognized by Carling Brewery, who awarded him their National title of Club Man of the Year. Approval of a new site at Kayte Lane was given in 1997, and members built a new clubhouse and changing rooms, using materials donated by local employer, Smiths Aerospace. Once this approval was given, there was tremendous transformation in results on the field and they were duly promoted in In order to take up this promotion opportunity, one final ground-sharing agreement was arranged with Southern League club, Evesham United. For season , the team made a triumphant return to their own ground after the new stand and floodlights were approved. The FA Charter for Football in the Community was awarded to the club in December 2002, thanks to the efforts of Club Chairman, Dave Walker, in partnership with Cleeve Colts Youth team and the local council saw the completion of the magnificent new clubhouse and changing rooms, which benefit the community, as well as the club. In 2006, the club gained promotion to the Southern League, something that looked like a pipe-dream ten years previously. In their first season, the club finished a creditable 13 th in the Midland Division and improved to 12 th in 2007/08. They were then moved sideways to the Division One South & West and in 2008/09 finished in 18 th place and in 2009/10, they were 11 th. In 2010/11, they were 15 th, in 2011/12, they were 11 th, and in 2012/13, they finished in a lowly 21 st place their worst position at Southern League level. This is their 8 th season in the Southern League. The club started the 2013/14 campaign with a new management team of JOHN BROUGH, an ex- Cheltenham Town defender together with his Assistant Manager, MICHAEL JACKSON, who was team-captain last season. Come on, there s a fridge magnet, or a badge, waiting for you! We hope that the fans will support our events planned for the season. It all helps the coffers and then we can give the football club even more money! The end result, will be better facilities within the ground, floodlighting (eventually), and more success on the pitch and we all want that!! If any of the supporters have any ideas or proposals that they think would help MUSC, then please see a Committee member so that they can discuss this at their next monthly meeting. The players selected are, Rhys Baird (G/K), Ben Hemmings, Dan Stevens, Jack Rhys Jones, Jack Broughton and Kyle Ford. MUFC would like to congratulate all six players on gaining recognition and selection for the County squad. Gloucestershire will also play in the South West Counties Championship & The Mick Parry Memorial Trophy. 33 goals in the last five games have seen the youngsters go to the top of the SFY League and also march into the second round of the GYFA Shield. The Brislington fixture was brought forward to avoid congestion later in the season and following on from the 6-1 drubbing of Taunton Town, the lads hit another 7 which put them top of the league table. Gotherington were then crushed 8-0 in the GFAS which gives us a home tie with Lydney Town. Struggling Ashton & Backwell then came under the hammer as our youngsters recorded a 6-1 away victory. We then repeated the scoreline against Ashton & Backwell, at home. The five matches saw Ben Hemmings score 7, Liam Monelle 4, Jack Broughton 7, Jack Rhys-Jones 2, Dan Stevens 2, Daquon Henry 3, Justin Lee 3, Danny Dodimead 2 & Josh Shamrock, Liam Henderson, & Tyrell White with a goal each. Following on from our first round win over Keynsham Town in the Roger Stone Memorial Cup, we received a BYE in the second round and now are at home to Paulton Rovers in the quarter-final. FIELD REVIEW - 18 INTRODUCING THE MITRES JAKE LEE DEFENDER / STRIKER Jake joined Cleeve after being released by Cheltenham Town during the summer of 2009 on work experience, and then joined when he was released by The Robins. Known more for being a striker, his conversion to centre-half, last season, by then manager Alex Sykes looked to be something of a master-stroke, but he has now returned to a role up front. He came to the Supporters attention when he spent part of the campaign on loan, but was well known to Alex Sykes much longer as he was once his schoolteacher. JOE TURLEY MIDFIELD Having previously played for Cheltenham Town, Joe signed for The Mitres from Mangotsfield United in July He made 9 (5) appearances for The Field JAKE MORGAN MIDFIELD Jake joined this season from Lydney Town, after playing in the Cheltenham Academy. He is an exciting winger who is great at getting in crosses from wide positions. LOUIE BARNFATHER GOALKEEPER Louie spent a short time with The Mitres on work experience from Cheltenham Town and had a short spell with Blackpool before coaching in the USA. JAMIE LOCK DEFENDER/MIDFIELDER Jamie has progressed from youth and second teams to become a regular 1 st team member. Passes the ball well with a strong left peg. MIKE SHOLLEY MIDFIELD Shols has undoubted quality and is a great asset to the team. He doesn t stop working and is technically very good. He has worked his way through the ranks to break into the 1 st team. LORCAN SHEEHAN MIDFIELD A former Hartpury College student and Cheltenham Town Youth, Lorcs has played for Oxford United, FGR, Evesham United and Cheltenham Saracens. Versatile and committed, Ad will always score goals. His former clubs include Harrow Hill, Lydney Town, Newent Town, Hook Norton, Cirencester Town, Cinderford Town, Yate Town and Swindon Supermarine. FIELD REVIEW - 6 A much-changed side this season, BISHOPS CLEEVE have had a topsy-turvey campaign so far. The club had already changed their strip to Green & Black during the summer, and also the nickname of the club has been changed from The Villagers to The Mitres. Of their 13 league games, they have yet to record a draw, winning four and losing nine. The opening day of the season saw them crushed 1-5 at Bridgwater and then they were beaten 0-3 at home to Cinderford. They recovered to give Surrey side Godalming Town a 5-0 thumping at Kayte Lane, but then narrowly lost 1-2 at Yate Town. A 2-1 home win against Shortwood United was followed by a 3-4 home defeat against Thatcham Town. They had a good 4-0 win at struggling Didcot Town and followed this with a fine 3-2 victory at Evesham United. That was their last win and their last five games have all ended in defeat. They have been beaten at home 1-3 by Wimborne Town and 0-5 by Clevedon Town. On their travels, they went down by 1-4 at Paulton Rovers, 1-3 at Wordsworth Drive Taunton and 2-5 at new boys Stratford Town. Of course, we have been to Kayte Lane recently, defending our Gloucestershire Senior Trophy title and came away with a 2-0 win. Nonetheless, The Mitres are always committed opponents and will give us a stern test this afternoon. We extend a warm welcome to everyone from the club, especially our ex-players, ALEX HOYLE & JOE TURLEY. We trust that they will enjoy their short stay with us and have an uneventful short journey back to Kayte Lane. Welcome to the Glass Consultants UK Stadium, at Cossham Street. QATAR FOOTBALL Graham Mills is based in St. Neots, Cambs. He produces the Eynesbury Rovers programme and pens articles for Bristol Rovers. He has very kindly passed on some very readable articles for the FIELD REVIEW. Following the somewhat controversial awarding of the 2022 World Cup Finals to Qatar I thought that I would take a look at the country and in particular its football culture and history. Also known as the State of Qatar it is an Arab country in the Middle East, occupying the small Qatar Peninsula on the northeasterly coast of the much larger Arabian Peninsula. The state is surrounded by the Persian Gulf and is bordered by Saudi Arabia to its South. A strait of the Persian Gulf separates Qatar from the nearby island nation of Bahrain. Qatar is a nation made rich through its oil and gas reserves and has been ruled by the Al-Thani family since the mid-19 th century. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Qatari economy was crippled by a continuous siphoning off of petroleum revenues by the Emir, who had ruled the country since His son, the current Amir Hamad bin Khalifa al- Thani, overthrew him in a bloodless coup in In 2001, Qatar resolved its longstanding border disputes with both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. The official language is Arabic and the population as at the 2010 census was 1,696,563. The capital of Qatar is Doha and the total area of the country is 4,416 square miles. The first football club in Qatar was formed in Dukhan in 1948, when Bedouin Nomads were still roaming the desert! In 1950 the first Doha club, Al-Ahli was established however the Qatar Football Association was not founded until ten years later and in 1970 became associated with FIFA. The Qatar Stars League is the highest professional league in Qatari football. The league was formed in 1963 and has slowly expanded since the turn of the century, moving from nine clubs to ten and then to twelve for the start of the 2009/10 season. There are two divisions in the Qatari football structure and the league has previously seen one club promoted and relegated each year except in expansion seasons. However, there are only six teams in the second division. It was announced on 15 April 2009 that no clubs would be relegated from the top flight due to expansion reasons; however the announcement was made with just one game remaining! The top four clubs at the end of the regular league system participate in the Qatar Crown Prince Cup, which was formed in the 1994/95 season. The Emir Cup, Sheikh Jassem Cup and the Stars Cup are also competed for. The current champions are Al-Gharrafa. Qatar s football teams have large and modern stadiums with a capacity of up to 50,000 (Khalifa Stadium). Al Sadd (who hold the record for most league championships 11) are the best supported team although supporters of their close rivals Al Arabi might disagree. Al Sadd is a street in the capital of Doha which gives some idea of the scale of things in Qatar football. In 2003 each football team in Qatar was given an initial ten million dollars to go out and employ some big foreign names. The two biggest names to play at that time were Argentine International Gabriel Batistuta and Nigerian Jay-Jay Okocha (formerly of Bolton Wanderers). Anyone attending a match will notice the wild Arabic football chants and drumming sounds making the match more akin to an African game rather than European. The preferred option for celebrating a victory is for fans to hop in their Landcruisers and drive up and down the Corniche, leaning out of their windows, honking their horns and letting off firecrackers. Qatari s, unlike hotel residents, are not allowed to drink alcohol and are often prevented from entering night clubs. The Qatar FA is aiming to develop home grown footballing talent and in 2006 they launched a Sports Academy called Aspire to do so. Every year the academy aims to take on 70 youngsters in Qatar to develop their sporting talent. Looking ahead to 2022 Qatar s plans include 12 eco-friendly, carbon neutral stadiums. All of the stadiums will harness the power of the suns rays to provide a cool environment by converting solar energy into electricity that will then be used to cool both players and fans. When games are not taking place the solar installations at the stadiums will export energy into the power grid. The upper tiers of nine of the stadiums are to be removed after the tournament and sent to developing nations which lack sufficient football infrastructure. The capacity of most of the stadiums will be 40,000 50,000 with the new Lusail Iconic Stadium, with a capacity of 86,250 hosting the opening match and the final. All the grounds are within 30 minutes of each other which was a major selling point in their World Cup bid. Whatever you think about the decision to award the 2022 World Cup Finals to Qatar there seems no doubt to me about their ability to host the tournament after carrying out research for this article. Anyway 9 years is still a long way away. I ll be nearly 60! It doesn t bear thinking about! FIELD REVIEW - 17

14 VILLAGE GOSSIP Mangotsfield United Football Club would like to place on record its thanks to Commercial & Marketing Manager SHAUN HONOUR, who recently left the club. Appointed to the role in February, Shaun was instrumental in bringing in added revenue through sponsorship and events staged at the club, as well as increasing the club s profile in the Bristol area. We all wish him well for the future. SUPER SUNDAY is running now, Every Sunday until Christmas and is an idea by the club to reward you fans by reducing the cost of your pint. CARLING, BLACKTHORN & NATCH will cost just 2 a pint between midday and 6pm. Live Premiership football will also be showing on the big screen. Sunday afternoon Sky Sports football shown on Sundays will feature, Sunderland v Newcastle, Chelsea v Manchester City, & Manchester United v Arsenal, and many many more. A good chance to see some great football on the box, enjoy a cheap pint and give the social club a vibrant atmosphere. In what was the last week before a draw was to be made for cash prizes of 500, 200 & 100, one lucky person correctly predicted the scores of the three selected fixtures on the Three Match Pool fundraiser. After being the only person to correctly predict the scores of the Liverpool v Crystal Palace and Bristol Rovers v Fleetwood Town games, VAL GRZESICZEK, the Bar & Functions Manager at the club then had to wait until the end of the 5.30pm kick-off and was amazed to learn that her anticipated result of Manchester United 2, Sunderland 1, had earned her the 800 jackpot! Well Done Val. Ex Mangotsfield United forward, DEAN GRIFFITHS, has left the Bridgwater Town revolution and returned to Chippenham Town where Steve Winter WAS the Manager. He was sensationally relieved of his duties whilst on holiday following the Bluebirds 0-9 home defeat by Stourbridge!! Meanwhile BRIDGWATER TOWN flatly refused an approach from Frome Town for their manager RICHARD FEY and so The Robins have now settled on BRIAN O DONNELL (ex AFC Bournemouth) as their new manager following the sacking of Derek Graham. Also involved in the merry-go-round is NATHAN RUDGE, who was at Chippenham, with Richard Fey, and he has now joined TAUNTON TOWN as their Player/Coach! Toolstation Premier league side, BRISLINGTON created a piece of history for the club by reaching the 4 th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup and drawing Welling United to Ironmould Lane. A crowd of 700 saw them narrowly go down by a single goal. SHORTWOOD UNITED went one better and after a draw at Meadowbank, they beat ALDERSHOT TOWN 2-1 in the replay to set themselves up with a home tie against PORT VALE. That was shown LIVE on BT Sport on Monday. The financial rewards for The Wood must be enormous. They put on a very good show against formidable odds, and despite going down 0-4, the last two late goals came through fatigue. Excellent showing by The Wood Stoke City keeper Asmir Begovic was in the news recently, when he scored a rather spectacular goal against Southampton, after just 12 seconds. Dave Blackmore was quick to point out to me that Steve Book, who was a former pro, had to wait until he dropped out of league football before he scored his first goal, and of course, he did it for Mangotsfield United. That was in August 2006, in his 3 rd game for the club, in a 2-0 win at Rugby Town. His 90 th minute free-kick from his own area sealed the game for us after GARY WARREN had given us a 35 th minute lead. One season later, another Mangotsfield keeper found the net. With the club struggling against relegation from the Premier Division, JOSH CLAPHAM scored our 3 rd goal against Chippenham, with a drop kick and we went on to win 4-1. It was huge result for us and we did stay up. You will recall that CARDIFF CITY fans were in uproar when their new Malaysian owners changed their strip from Royal Blue, to Red & Black, with a new badge and crest. Still called The Bluebirds, there is a small bird on the base of the crest, but with such a massive change to the club s tradition, you might have thought their second strip would be blue. It might appease the fans. But no, they went to Aston Villa and wore ALL YELLOW!! You do wonder, you really do!! FIELD REVIEW - 8 THE WORLD OF SOCCER WELCOME ONCE AGAIN to THE WORLD OF SOCCER, the column that brings you news stories from around the globe. Let s begin today in TUNISIA, where in early October, club side CS Hammamm-Lif were roared on to a 1-0 victory in a crunch relegation clash in an empty stadium! But in actual fact, it s like that all across the North African country because since the 2011 revolution, all fans have been banned from attending all matches there! There is a way around it though creative agency Memac Ogilvy Tunisia invented an app called, The Twelfth Man, and by tapping keys on their devices, fans can choose applause, sing, cheer or drums and then loudspeakers in the stadium pump out the noise! Bizarre Now in PORTUGAL recently, one of Europe s top referees was left stunned when a pregnant woman told him that she hoped that her child would grow up to kick his backside! Portuguese referee Duarte Gomes, who has officiated in World Cup qualifiers & Europa League fixtures, thought he was doing a good deed by giving up his place in a queue to a very expectant mum-to-be, only to receive the surprise retort. Gomes told the media, The woman thanked me, but then added What I really need is for my baby to be born, grow up quickly and kick your backside so hard, that you will soon stop ripping off my club. Unfortunately, the press report in the Metro did not name the lady fan s club in question, but it was probably one of the Big 3 in Portugal Benfica, Sporting Lisbon or Porto. Now former GERMANY captain Lothar Matthaus recently revealed to the media that he is still very much alive after being labelled deceased! Matthaus, who captained the West Germany* side to World Cup success in Italia 90, was left fuming after a letter sent to him over an alimony claim from his ex-wife was returned unopened to a court with the word deceased stamped across it. Matthaus told the media, This is outrageous. You can find me anywhere. Everyone can see that I am still alive, whether on TV or on the football field, and if someone wants to send me a message, it is very easy. I moved to Budapest in Hungary 9 years ago, but it is still on the planet. Sounds to me as if the deceased stamp on the letter may have been a prank by a postie perhaps! *The 1990 World Cup win for West Germany gives Matthaus a particular claim to fame because it was the last tournament to feature a German side representing the divided Germany, with the country being re-unified later in And staying in GERMANY, it appears that German Chancellor Angela Merkel once caught sight of one of her country s top footballers in the altogether! It was recently revealed by Wolfgang Niersbach, president of the DFB, that, whilst attending a top game in her political role, Ms Merkel once wandered into the dressing rooms as the birthday-suited player emerged from the showers. Asked to name the mystery player, Herr Niersbach said, I am not telling you. Besides, that would be embarrassing for Bastian Schweinsteiger. Next, we cross the border into HOLLAND & a story that goes back to around Now the Dutch police occasionally stage practice riots, as a training exercise for their rookie cops & there s something at the back of my mind that tells me that we once did a report in the FIELD REVIEW even prior to 2006 about one of these riots that actually turned into the real thing, but don t ask me which programme it was in! Anyway, what happened 7 years ago was that Dutch Ere Divisie side Go Ahead Eagles FC, who are based in Deventer in northern Holland, posted an advertisement, backed by the police, for volunteers to take part in such an event at their stadium. Problem was, some of the locals saw the advert ( Put up stiff resistance and get a free ticket and a drink ) & literally took it at its word! Police were forced to repel 2 individuals who were hurling rocks at them after they objected to being cleared from the ground. A police spokesman later said, We decided to halt the drill because a number of supporters were not behaving as we had earlier agreed. You don t say! Go Ahead Eagles, by the way, may not be among the more well-known Dutch sides like Ajax, Feyenoord or PSV Eindhoven, but Bristol City fans with EXTREMELY long memories may recall a pre-season friendly with the Deventer outfit at Ashton Gate around about I know I was there, & I think City may have won 2-0 or 2-1 perhaps? In the meantime, though, there ll be more from the WOS again soon. FIELD REVIEW - 16

17 THAT WAS THE MONTH THAT WAS! Time now for a nostalgic look back at a particular month in recent or not-so-recent years & see how we fared in hat period. We enjoyed a very good season & were still top in April as we approached the final hurdle, but we eventually finished 3rd as Liskeard Athletic caught up on their games in hand & finished the season as GML Champions. Our application to join the Southern League (then the Beazer Homes League) proved unsuccessful, but the seeds had been sewn for a far more successful campaign in THE GAMES IN QUESTION A hectic November 1989 began with a surprise 1-0 away win at YEOVIL TOWN in the Somerset Cup, but I ve no details to hand who scored the winning goal! But 3 days later, we were back down from Cloud 9 after losing 3-2 at neighbours BRISTOL MANOR FARM in the FA Vase. MARTIN BOYLE gave us the lead on 17 minutes, but Geoff Bray levelled for Farm with 3 minutes left. Our hosts forged ahead in extra time, thanks to Roger Coke (93) & Dean Newman (103), but ROGER MILLETT s goal on 118 minutes proved to be too little too late. Next up was a routine 3-0 home win over those Super Greens from TORRINGTON, with all the goals coming after the break courtesy of Nigel Reed (own goal 58), MARTIN BOYLE (68) & DAVE JARVIS (80). The programme for the game was significant in that it contained a photo of MUFC fan Chris Beanland IN BED!!! Hhmm.. Four days later, we ran riot against a very young BATH CITY RESERVES team in the LPC, winning 8-1 against their GML side who played at Radstock in those days. Our goals came from CARMELLO MICCICHE (5 & 87), MARTIN BOYLE (9, 37 & 40), WAYNE MORRIS (38 & 57 pen) & DAVE JARVIS (45), with Phil Underhill netting for Bath (80 pen). Poor finishing (what, after Bath??) & an inspired performance from home keeper Kevin Malloy then led to a 2-1 loss at our (then) bogey side TAUNTON TOWN for whom Phil Hunt netted an 88 th minute winner, but 4 days later, we were smiling again after our trip to the old North Somerset coalfields when we triumphed 3-0 at WELTON ROVERS. Our goals came from MARTIN BOYLE (11) & TIM BANKS (32 & 55) & a note I made in the programme afterwards simply said, Floodlights failed after 30 seconds. Welton s keeper failed to arrive & Mark Church went in goal. Mark Church was an ex- MUFC player who was programmed that night to play at No 8 for Welton! Looking back more around 24 years now, I don t remember a thing about the game at all, even though I was there! Next up was a 5-1 demolition of Dorset side SWANAGE TOWN & HERSTON, with goals from MARTIN BOYLE (9 & 13), ROGER MILLETT (27), ANDY BLACK (57) & JIMMY WRING (84), with the Swanage goal coming from Mark Turner (48) & the month ended with a 3-1 win at FROME TOWN, where goals from CARMELLO MICCICHE (2) & ROGER MILLETT inside the first 12 minutes secured the win! That s it for now, so there ll be more from TWTMTW again soon. FIELD REVIEW - 15 LUKE BALLINGER FORWARD Sponsored by BOB JENKINS 25 year-old Luke has re-joined Mangotsfield in September 2013, after leaving Frome Town. He first signed for us in 2007/8 from Toolstation League Premier Division side, Melksham Town, where he found the net on 29 occasions during the 2006/07 campaign, thus helping the Wiltshire club to a respectable 5 th place in the table. He also had a short loan spell at Chippenham Town. Played Futsal for TeamBath & captains the England side, and was in the Frome Town side in 2011 that beat us 3-0 in the Play-off semi-final, scoring the third goal.he made 37 (7) appearances for The Field in the 07/08 season and scored 9 goals. 18 DAVE S DIARY - 1 GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE & WELCOME TO THE GLASS CONSULTANTS UK STADIUM for today s Calor League clash against our friends from BISHOPS CLEEVE. Yes, it s a home game at last, believe it or not! I d forgotten what they were! Anyway, we ll talk about some of the recent away games today & the rest on Tuesday when we play STRATFORD TOWN. Please, then, give Our Boyz all your support as we strive to pick up the 3 points on offer - COME ON THE FIELD!! MEANWHILE, OUR LAST HOME GAME, WHICH SEEMS AGES AGO NOW ended in a 2-1 home loss v league leaders NORTH LEIGH (well, they were at the time!) & it was indeed disappointing because although we matched them in most areas of the field, we didn t create enough chances & that was the main difference between the 2 sides. Yes, KEVIN SAWYER was the busier of the 2 keepers, but he wasn t over-stretched by any means & I felt a draw was about right. North Leigh weren t top of the table for nothing & they looked like a side who grind out results, & that s certainly what they did against us, winning thanks to an unlucky own goal & a penalty. Still, that s football, but in our case, we re still trying to get some sort of consistency going. When you read what some Tiverton fans were saying on their forum after our 3-2 win at Ladysmead some weeks back, they were certainly praiseworthy of our side as a whole (in what was a cracking game, I m told) & they admitted that the Tivvy defence found LUKE BALLINGER & KYLE TOOZE (in particular) in top form on the night. Well, every game is different, of course, and every team in the land tries to find consistency week in, week out & it s something we ourselves are seeking right now. There s still plenty of time, of course, with a heck of a lot of football to be played over the coming 6 months or so, but a couple of back-to-back wins can do wonders for any side & that s what we d like right now. FORTUNATELY, WE FOLLOWED THAT DEFEAT ONE WEEK LATER with a very welcome 2-0 FA Trophy win at SHORTWOOD UNITED, which ultimately rewarded us with a trip to TIVERTON in the next round. Two goals from JOSH EGAN did the business up there in North Gloucestershire & whether Shortwood had one eye on their FA Cup tie v Aldershot one week later, we will never know. Besides, that wasn t our problem anyway. We can only try & win the game on the day, regardless of any other situation going on elsewhere & that s just what we did. UNFORTUNATELY, HEAVY RAIN PUT PAID TO A QUICK RETURN VISIT to North Gloucestershire on the following Tuesday as our GFA Trophy clash with BISHOPS CLEEVE not surprisingly fell victim to a waterlogged pitch. THE FA TROPHY DRAW ON 21 OCTOBER DID THROW UP ONE OR TWO INTERESTING TIES as well as pairing us with Tiverton Town. For instance, former Clevedon Town programme editor Steve Small lives in North Norfolk these days & I still keep in touch with him regularly. Whilst Clevedon were winning 2-1 at AFC Totton in the Trophy, Steve was watching one of his local Norfolk sides, Wroxham, lose 9-4 (!!) at home to Margate in another Trophy fixture. It turned out that one of the Margate players was Phil Walsh, an ex-clevedon player who, I dare say, played against us a fair few times years ago. And then came the Trophy draw on the following Monday: Clevedon away to Margate!! So the Seasiders will have come up against one of their former players 2 weeks ago & in fact, he scored against them in Margate s 4-1 win. Margate that s almost abroad! BUT FOR STEVE TO SEE NO LESS THAN 13 GOALS IN ONE GAME did make me wonder re what was the game that had the most goals I had ever seen? For me, it has to be MUFC Reserves 17, Weston St John 0 from the late 1990s, but that s not quite the same as a 9-4 as it was so one sided & could have been many more. I was present, though, about 5 years ago when Radstock Town lost 8-5 at home to Truro City in an end-of-season Toolstation League fixture! That was a crazy game too. Truro led 6-1 at half time & quite honestly, even then, everyone was having a job keeping up with the score, and by the end of the game, the locals had seen their team score five goals at home, and still lose! Amazing really, it s not often that has ever happened before! Meanwhile, it would be interesting to know if any Mango fans out there have witnessed any more goal feasts such as that and preferably more than 13 goals in one game!! Come & see me in the Club Shop with the info. MISSING YOUR GOALS AT MANGOS, DAVID! ANY CHANCE OF A COME-BACK? Sealy replied a short while later & said, I M TOO OLD NOW MATE AND THE BODY S IN BITS! Ah well, it was worth a try! But it s good to know that The Seal Man is still out there & judging by the names he liaises with on FB, I m sure he keeps an eye on our results. BUT ONE THING YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT when you go on forums of any sort is to avoid putting your foot in it, by saying the wrong thing & I m sure we ve all done it here & there & that s especially so when you re writing programme articles as well! A good example was when a recent FA Cup draw was made & a Yate fan announced the cup draw on a forum by saying, DRAWN AT HOME AGAINST HAMPTON & RICHMOND WHEN WE BEAT GLOUCESTER ON WEDNESDAY. I think the use of the word when was the problem here because, of course, it didn t quite go that fan s way in the end! And with that Gloucester v Yate replay in mind, it was interesting to note that our former striker DARREN EDWARDS had 4 assists in Gloucester s 7 goals on the night, proving that all the experience he has of Conference North football is still proving him to be a class act & a vital part of the Tigers squad. I note that the Bluebells later bounced back (winning 6-0 at Fleet) as you learn from a loss like that, as I m sure we would do, if it happened to us and knowing football as we do, it probably will happen to us one day, but not yet please! AND THAT REMINDS ME, I KNOW THAT IT IS STILL ONLY NOVEMBER, but our home derby tie against the Bluebells of YATE TOWN is only a few weeks away Saturday 7 December in fact. I know the old cliché about only taking one game at a time and that s very true, but even so, everyone players, fans, managers, programme editors alike all know what s coming up in the coming weeks & for us, Yate are just over the horizon right now, but they re not too far away. It is unusual that we re not playing Yate on Boxing Day for once & to have them here on a pre-christmas Saturday when everyone starts thinking about shopping has not been well thought out by the fixture planners either. Having said that, there s not a lot we can do about it anyway and besides, a trip to Clevedon on Boxing Day will be something different for once. Yate fans might also say the same thing about a trip to Bishops Cleeve, because that s who they have on Boxing Day this year! SO WE WILL LOOK FORWARD TO PLAYING YATE ON DECEMBER 7 and as President Roosevelt said on that date in 1941, following the attack on Pearl Harbour, it s a date that will live in infamy but of course, in terms of a football match, I just hope that we can win against our nearest & dearest on that day! Everyone knows that our record against the Bluebells in the last 5 or 6 years is not very good & that especially applies to here at Cossham Street. They tend to win here in the league most of the time these days. That s got to change this season! Still, as I said earlier, that game s a few weeks away yet & we ve a busy time to get through first, including today! SEASON HOME ATTENDANCES STATISTICS (up to & including v North Leigh ) Tel Col.
