Week 1 & 2 Activity 1 - Red Light, Green Light Activity 2 - Magic Gates All players have a ball and dribble around inside the area following the coaches instructions Red Light = Stop, Green Light = Go, Mommis driving = go slow, daddies driving = go fast, pump the gas = toe-taps, clean the car = soccer boxes., U-turn = player puts their foot on the ball and does a pullback move (use other turns as well), Runaway truck = coaches chases players and tries to kick their ball out of the area. If players ball is kicked out they try to kick a different players ball out of the area. Last player with a ball wins. Introduce each part of the activity gradually. Make sure you point out coaching points of dribbling toe down, use laces, inside, outside and bottom to change direction.. Using cones mark a number of magic gates each gate should be about 1 yard wide. On the coaches command each player has 30 seconds to dribble through as many magic gates as possible. Players get one point for each gate they dribble through. Make it a competition and see who can get the most points. After a few goes try to challenge the players and have them perform a skill every time they go through the gate i.e. they must do a pull-back and go back through the gate, complete 4 soccer boxes/toe taps, then go through gate.. Finally have a few players kick their balls out. These players are the gate keepers and they try to run around and kick other players balls out as they are trying to go through the gates. If there ball is kicked out they go and get it and come back in trying to get more points. Play for 30 secs then change roles. Dribbling technique and using different turns. Activity 3 - Treasure Chest Arrange players with 2 or 3 players in each corner and all of the balls in the middle of the square. Let the players know that they are all pirates and the balls in the middle are treasure. When the coach says go it is a relay race with one Activity 4 - Treasure Chest - Cont. coach Pirate from each corner racing into the middle and dribbling a piece of treasure back to their corner, they tag the next player and they go. This continues until all of the treasure in the middle is gone. The progression to this game is to make players perform a certain turn when they come out to get the treasure. If they don t perform a turn then they must return the treasure to the middle. Also, when all of the balls have gone from the middle you can give the players 30 seconds to go and take treasure back to their corner from other corners. The set up for the game is the same with the only difference being that the coach has all of the balls/treasure off to the side. The coach throws in 2 balls at a time and 1 player from each corner races out to try and get one of the balls back to their corner. Players now need to be aware of other players trying to take their ball.
Week 3 & 4 Activity 1 - Foxes n Farmers Players are the foxes and the coach is the farmer. The players take a piny and place it in the back of their shorts so it looks like a tail. They run around the area without a ball and the coach chases them trying to steal their tail. If a player has Their tail taken they become a farmer and chase the other players around. After playing the game a couple of times now introduce a ball so that all players dribble around with a ball while the coach chases them still trying to steal their tale. Try to introduce two or three different turns in the game to have players turn away from the farmer. Activity 2 - All hands on deck Turn the ship = perform a turn Players dribble around in a square (pirate ship) performing different commands. Scrub the decks = Roll bottom of foot on top of ball as if scrubbing the decks. Hoist the sale = throw the ball in the air and try to control it. Sword fight = Soccer Boxes Pirate invasion = run to the lower deck (small square) before the coach (invading pirate) catches you. Dribbling technique and using different turns. Keep ball close and under control when running from the coach Activity 3 - Red Light Green light - Race version Activity 4 - Toy Story 3 Just like the version of red light green light from week one but this is a race. All players line up on one end line and when the coach says green light they start dribbling towards the other end line. When the coach shouts red light players must stop immediately, anyone moving must go back to the begin- Other things to add Pump the gas = toe taps Clean the car = Soccer boxes Police chase = coach stands at the finish line and chases all players back to the original start line, anyone the coach tags must do a fun punishment i.e. donkey kicks. Keep ball close and under control The players all stand on one side of the area and choose if they want to be buzz light year, woody, Ken, Barby or any of the other good guys. The coach stands in the middle of the area and is Lotso the nasty teddy bear. When the coach says go all players have to try and dribble across the area (Sunnyside daycare). The coach tries to kick each players ball out as they go across the area, if they get to the other side they stay there until the coach tells them to go again. Players now need to be aware of other players trying to take their ball.
Week 5 & 6 Activity 1 - says Activity 2 - Chain Soccer This game is the same as Simon Say but it is coach says. Players move around and follow the commands of the coach - but only do the command if they hear coach says first. Come up with fun things for them to do i.e. dribble with their head, ear, Butt etc. Try to mention coaching points for dribbling and also have them do different foot skills i.e. toe taps, soccer boxes etc. Kicked out see which player built the biggest chain. Dribbling technique and using different turns. Have all players arranged in an area with a soccer ball. Select 2 players to kick their soccer balls out. These 2 players race around trying to kick everyone else's ball out of the area. If your ball is kicked out of the area you hold hands with the person that kicked it out to start forming a chain. When all the balls have been Keep ball close and under control when running from chain builders Activity 3 - Hungry Hippos The players all stand on one side line with a ball. They are the explorers going through the jungle. The coach stands in a channel in the middle of the area which is the river. Players need to dribble through the river to the other side of the area with their ball and try to avoid the coach (Hippo) who is trying to take their ball. If a player has their ball taken then they join the coach in the river and become another hippo. Keep ball close and under control Activity 4 - Everyone Plays GK Mark out 2 large goals and divide the players into two groups. One group stands in one goal and the other group stands in the opposite goal. The coach stands of to the side with all of the soccer balls. The coach serves in 1 soccer ball at a time and calls a number. The players with that number run out and go against each other trying to score on the opposite goal. All other players are goalkeepers. If possible have a couple of parents/assistants help each team. Try to keep ball close and beat player they are competing against
Week 7 & 8 Activity 1 - Freeze Tag Ball and join back in the game. Players all dribble around the area with a ball. The coach runs around trying to kick each players ball out. If a players ball is kicked out that player must freeze like a statue until another player passes the ball through their legs. They then go and get Start to introduce basic passing technique when freeing a player Activity 2 - Clean your room Have the players arranged so that there is a group in each corner with one ball in the group. In the middle of the square place a bunch of pinnies. Players take turns dribbling out from their group to the middle and picking up some dirty laundry then taking it back to their corner (the laundry room). After picking up a piece of laundry they Pass the ball back to the next player in the group who then repeats. All dribbling techniques worked on. Pass with inside part of the foot, no toes. Lock the ankle Place non-kicking foot next to the ball. Activity 3 - Topple the coconut Play for 1 minute or until a certain score is reached. Keep ball close and under control Use the passing technique from previous exercise Players are arranged in pairs with 2 balls. One ball is on the floor and the other ball is on a cone next to the players. The first player dribbles all the way to the far cone then performs a turn, on the way back they make a pass from at the first cone trying to knock the other ball off the cone. The other player waits to control the ball then repeats. Activity 4 - Cat n Mouse Arrange players in pairs. One with a ball the other without a ball. One player is the cat (player with ball) and the other the mouse. The cat chases the mouse dribbling the ball and the mouse runs around the area trying to lose the cat. When the coach shouts freeze everyone stops. The mouse faces the cat with their legs open. The cat then passes the ball trying to get the ball through their legs. Players then switch roles. Keep ball close and under control, keep head up to see where the mouse is going. Use the passing technique from previous exercise
Activity 1 - Piny Tag Week 9 & 10 Activity 2 - Candy Game Arrange players in the area each player with a ball. Give 3 or 4 players pinnies to hold in their hands. When the coach says go all players dribble around and if you are holding a piny you try to throw it and hit another player with it. If you get hit you pick the Piny up and chase someone else. Play for a set time and at the end of that time the players holding pinnies do a fun punishment (i.e. donkey kicks) All players are arranged in the area with a ball. Ask the players to name their favorite candy and select four of them. Assign each side a candy name (i.e. one side is snickers, the next side is milkyway etc). The players dribble around in the area and every time you shout out a different candy they must dribble to that side. The last player there doesn t get an imaginary piece of candy or has to do a fun punishment. After a few goes make the game more challenging by shouting out one candy then shouting a different one as they are dribbling to the first. This forces players to change direction and use their turns. All dribbling techniques worked on. Keep ball close. Use different turns to go from one side to the other. Activity 3 - Target game Players are arranged in 2 teams all players have a ball. Have one team on one side and the other team on the opposite side. Place 1 ball in the middle (if possible bring a big beach ball or exercise ball to make things fun!). The teams try to pass their ball so that it hits the ball in the middle and pushes it out on the opposite side. The team that knocks the ball out on the opposite side gets one point. All players should be passing continually until the ball in the middle is knocked out. Players don t need to chase after their ball instead wait for a ball being passed from the other side. Passing technique discussed before Use inside of the foot. None kicking ball next to the ball using the toe to aim. Keep ankle locked. Activity 4 - Castle game been assigned that number races out and goes against the other players with that number from the other corners. The aim of the game is to get one of the balls, dribble and knock down a castle in one of the other corners with a pass using the correct technique. If you knock down a castle you pick the castle up and go back to your corner. The coach then shouts another number and you repeat the game. The winning team is the team with the most castles in their corner at the end. Try to keep ball close Arrange the players so that there are 2 or 3 in each corner with 3 or more pointed cones. These cones are castles the coach throws in 2 balls and calls a number (1, 2, 3 etc), whichever player has Passing technique from before.
Week 11 & 12 Activity 1 How Long s Left Ref? Arrange the players on one end line with a soccer ball. The coach goes and stands on the opposite side of the area facing away from the players. The coach is the ref (explain to those that don t know what the ref is in a soccer game!), players must yell out How long s left ref? The coach responds with a number and then counts down Activity 2 - Super Hero Game Have 3 or 4 players with a ball lining up on one side of the area. They chose their favorite superhero and that is who they will represent. Arrange the other players one player each between a pair of cones. These are the bad guys and are trying to stop the super hero s from making it to the other side of the area and saving the world. From that number 10, 9, 8 etc players must dribble as fast as they can and see if they can make it to the other side where the coach is. When the coach gets to zero they will turn around and anyone moving must go back to the beginning. Players must be stopped with their foot on the ball. Other commands you can respond with It s goal time = players leave their ball and run around celebrating. It s Red card time = tell the players they are getting sent off and they must go down on their knees and plead not to be sent off. It s injury time = players roll around on the ground injured until the coach comes around to make them better. They must stay between their cones and can only move side to side. Play for a minute then move the bad guys to a different pair of cones so they have turns being the first, middle and last guy. After a few minutes switch roles. If anyone makes it to the other side they save the world and the teams automatically switch roles. Activity 3 - Attacking Moves 1 v 1 Arrange players in groups of 3 facing each other. The coach will serve a ball in and the players go 1v1 attacking the two wide goals on the opposite side of the area. You are only permitted to score on the goals opposite. Try to keep things moving quickly and if one pair are taking a long time call them off. Players should be encouraged to use the attacking moves that they have been working on and fake like they are going to one goal then attack another goal. Keep ball close. Dribble with the laces, Use different attacking fakes and be sure to use the entire body to fake a player out. Activity 4 - Attacking Moves 1 v 1 (cont) Arrange players in groups of 3 facing each other. The coach will serve a ball in. Players must run around and through the goal they are defending then go against the other player. There is only one goal for them to attack now so the game becomes harder. Players should be encouraged to use the attacking moves that they have been working on and fake like they are going to one goal then attack another goal. Keep ball close. Dribble with the laces, Use different attacking fakes and be sure to use the entire body to fake a player out.
