The win sealed another above-.500 record for the Lions in the preseason as they finished 3-1. Under head coach JIm Schwartz s guidance, the Lions are 15-5 overall in the preseason. When asked at his postgame press conference how soon the preseason was behind him and when the focus would shift to Sunday s game vs. Minnesota, he glanced at his watch and simply said, Five minutes ago. With preseason wins over the New York Jets, New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills this year, Schwartz recognizes the real work is yet to be done and emphasized the importance of carrying a winning mentality into the regular season. Schwartz on getting everything he wanted out of the preseason: We don t look and say this is what we were trying to get out of preseason. Players have worked hard and stayed focused. We improved in a lot of areas that we wanted to improve, but that s just our normal work ethic. There weren t other things we were trying to accomplish. Just keeping our nose to the grindstone and just keep on working. Sunday s game against the Vikings marks only the fifth time both teams have met on opening day as the Lions have 50 wins in home openers, the second most of any team in NFL history. With a victory over the Bills in the preseason finale last week, Detroit enters the regular season riding a two-game winning streak, and Schwartz emphasized the importance of ending the preseason on a high note. Schwartz on finishing the preseason with a win: We needed to get through this one. There was some things that we executed better than the first three games, there was still some work to be done. A few guys didn t play but the guys that did play played well. QB Matthew Stafford played just two series vs. the Bills, but the fifth-year quarterback is confident the offense and the team are in the right place for the season opener. Last season, Stafford led the Lions to a come-from-behind opening day win over the St. Louis Rams, tossing the gamewinning touchdown pass with only 10 seconds remaining. Stafford on how the offense has progressed heading into the regular season: I think we re right where we need to be. Keep progressing, get some of our guys back on the field and go out there and get ready for Minnesota. preseason improvements After finishing 30th in the League with a turnover differential of -16 in 2012, it is evident through the preseason that the Lions made it a priority to correct the team s inability to force turnovers last season. Taking care of the ball on offense and generating turnovers on defense have been points of emphasis this preseason as the team finished with a +6 turnover ratio. The defense forced nine turnovers in the four games, while the offense only committed three (1 int; 2 fum), an early improvement Schwartz has praised his team for throughout the preseason. Nobody is trying to fumble the ball or trying to throw an interception. Our offense has done a good job of protecting the football. Our defense has been opportunistic to strip the ball and to make plays. You need to balance both of those, but it s something that has been good to see the response that we have had over our troubles last year. In addition, the Lions demonstrated their depth on offense as the first-team and reserves alike showcased their ability to score. Overall, Detroit was fourth in points per game differential (11.0 points per game) and third in total points per game (28.5) this preseason. Injuries across the board last season resulted in inconsistent lineups on both sides of the ball, something Schwartz believes his team will now be better prepared to adjust to in Schwartz on having depth heading into the start of the regular season: It s been said a long time the preseason games don t count, but they matter. What matters is how you play within the structure of what you re doing offensively and defensively, how you execute, how guys respond to game situations, those things all matter. I think that if we keep our eye on those things then we ll be successful. GETTING TO REGULAR-SEASON FORM Now that the Lions have trimmed the roster to 53 players, the Lions know it is time for those who made the final cuts of training camp to earn playing time in the regular season. On offense, Detroit will be looking for that next playmaker behind RB Reggie Bush and Calvin Johnson as receivers Nate Burleson, Ryan Broyles and Patrick Edwards and Kris Durham will have opportunities to show their stuff in the passing the game. Burleson, now in his 11th NFL season, sees potential in his position group, but emphasized a need for the unit to correct mistakes heading into the regular season. Burleson on sharpening up the receiving corps: As a receiver, I m like, OK, if I hang on to the ball, we keep the chains moving. So, I m not worried about that. Now, if we were getting stopped, guys weren t getting open, Matt (Stafford) couldn t get the ball off, then that s when problems all need to be addressed. From a physical standpoint, all we have to do as receivers is catch the ball. It s just something we do. In order for those playmakers to have opportunities to succeed, however, the revamped offensive line will need to provide consistent protection for Stafford. With G Rob Sims and C Dominic Raiola as the only returning starters from last season, G Dylan Gandy, G Larry Warford, T Jason Fox and T Corey Hilliard will all be looking to establish their spot in the trenches, specifically on the right side of the offensive line. Schwartz on if the right side of the offensive line has been solidified: I think there are still possibilities there. It s coming to focus over the course of training camp. There could still be something that could change our minds. It s important to finish strong and finish the way we started. It s starting to come in. 4 are starting to come into focus, but none of them are cemented yet. OTHER PRESEASON NOTES Preseason Scoring ¾ The Lions capped the preseason with a 40-9 win over New England followed by a win at Buffalo. It marked the first time since 1954 that the Lions scored 35+ points in back-to-back preseason games. ¾ The Lions 40-9 win over the Patriots marked only the eighth time since 1949 that Detroit has scored 40 or more points in a preseason game and the first since ¾ Overall, Detroit was fourth in points per game differential (11.0 points per game). The Lions averaged 28.5 points per game (third in NFL) and allowed 15.8 points per game (tied for sixth). Turnovers ¾ Flipping the turnover ratio and generating big plays were areas the Lions focused on improving this year. During the preseason, the Lions were fourth with a +6 turnover margin. The team also tied for eighth with nine takeaways (4 int, 5 fum). They did not record a giveaway in three of the team s four preseason games. Team Passing ¾ Offensively, Detroit ranked eighth in the NFL during the preseason in team passing yards with yards per game. ¾ The team s quarterbacks tied for first in the NFL by connecting on eight touchdown passes during the preseason. Pass Protection ¾ As the team continued to adjust their offensive line and players competed for not only positions on the roster but also starting spots, the Lions finished third in sacks per pass play (3.33 pct.). Detroit tied for second by allowing just five sacks in four preseason games. Team Defense ¾ Not only was the Lions defense stingy this preseason in points allowed, they also limited opponents offensive total output. Detroit ranked 10th in total defense (308.3 yards per game) in the NFL. They were most stout against the run. Overall, the Lions in the preseason finished third in rushing yards allowed (79.5 yards per game) and second in rushing yards allowed per attempt (2.9). ¾ The Lions defense batted down 24 passes in the four preseason games, ranking fourth in the NFL and second in the NFC. ¾ Second-year LB Travis Lewis led the team in tackles with 16 (eight solo). Special Teams ¾ One of the highlights of the preseason included the team s special teams play and its kickers. As a team, Detroit ranked second in net punting average (44.8). Rookie P Sam Martin (fifth-round selection), finished first among all punters in the League during the preseason with a net punting average of 46.5 ¾ As a team, the Lions tied for fifth with 12 touchbacks on kickoffs. Martin, who is also handling kickoffs, registered eight touchbacks. ¾ K David Akers finished 10th in scoring during the preseason with 30 points. He made 7-of-8 field goals along with nine PATs. ¾ The Lions cover units were quite strong in the preseason. On punts, the Lions allowed a punt return average of 4.1, the second-lowest in the NFL. On kickoffs, the team allowed an average of 20.5, also the second-lowest in the NFL Notable Player Milestones wr CALVIN JOHNSON ¾ Needs two 200-yard receiving games to surpass Lance Alworth (5) for the most all-time. In six seasons, Johnson has four career 200-yard receiving games. ¾ Needs 1,500 receiving yards to join Andre Johnson (3), Marvin Harrison (3) and Jerry Rice (4) as the only players with at least three such seasons in NFL history.
