Week 1: Dribbling 1v1 Cones set up in diamond pattern with 3-4 players + 1 ball on each. 1 player from each dribbles out until they meet another player, turn and go back releasing the next player to go. Go to the group to your right. Go to group on your left. Go to any group while keeping 1 ball to each group. 2 opposite players go at a time, they must change direction around opposite player and join opposite group. Close, controlled touches. High tempo, but not a race. Different turns and moves to change direction. Awareness of other players Red player attacks the opposite goal, while player comes into defend. Defender s aim is to steal ball and dribble out of the area. Immediately on a goal, or ball leaving the area, a new white player attacks opposite goal and original red becomes defender. Pattern is continuous. See next exercise Attack at speed, attack space. Awareness of defender s positioning. Unbalance the defender with skill moves/turns/changes of direction. Be creative. React quickly to become defender.

Week 1: Dribbling 1v1 Same set up with a 3 rd team and goal added. Red attacks white goal, blue attack red, white attacks blue. Play is continuous with attacking player always transitioning to defense. Regular scrimmage set up, with a break out zone/goal off to one side. Players are all numbered white = even, red = odd. Coach calls a number, that player comes into the breakout zone to play 1v1 against defender. That player then is the next defender. 1v1 goals are added to the match score. Full scrimmage, encourage players to create and recognize 1v1s Attack at speed, attack space. Awareness of defender s positioning. Unbalance the defender with skill moves/turns/changes of direction. Be creative. React quickly to become defender. Be positive and look for the opportunity to shoot Attacking mindset to beat the defender. Be creative, try things to be the defender!

Week 2 Running With The Ball Players are in groups of 3, 1 player breaks from their zone and travels with the ball to the opposite group, and passing to the next person in line. Teams race to complete 10 lengths. Players spread out instead of line, and must play 3 passes between them before releasing the next player. Positive first touch into space. Controlled, but bigger touches, push ball out in front of you with laces to cover ground quickly. Head up, while travelling with the ball. 4v2 in each end zone. Team of 4 attempts to keep possession until they have a chance to release a player into the center zone, who drives with the ball and plays me opposite team, who then do the same. Point for each successful drive. A defender may give chase through the middle zone to stop the player running with the ball. Play a lead pass for player to run onto and attack space. Positive first touch, pushing ball out in front to cover ground quickly. Carry the ball with head up between touches.

Week 2 Running With The Ball Reds vs White. Blue players in end zone are target players. 2 points for dribble into end zone, 1 point for a pass to target player. Wide blue players are neutral, 1 neutral blue in center. Remove central neutral player. Scrimmage with coned off wide channels. When a ball is received in the channel, defender may only enter the channel behind the ball. Full scrimmage Move the ball, and work as a team to create space. Awareness of opportunities to drive with the ball Mentality/attitude of players to attack space. Open body when receiving, positive first touch. Lead pass to enable team mate to attack the space. Get the ball out of feet to cover ground quickly.

Week 3: Passing & Receiving Start with 2 balls in opposite corners. Repetitive passing pattern into center player, out out to next corner. Everyone follows their pass. Change direction Add ball. Up to 4 balls depending on level/success. Check off the cone to receive the ball. Open body and receive on the back foot so you re facing next target as you receive. Weight and speed of pass. Try to move the ball on in 2 touches. Start with 2 balls in opposite corners. Repetitive passing pattern as before, but now corner player receives the ball back for a give & go (A in diagram). Same rotation of players as before. B in diagram center player plays a second give and go as they follow to the next corner. Change direction, add balls. Check off the cone to receive the ball. Open body and receive on the back foot so you re facing next target as you receive. Be precise try to weight and time the passes to help your team mate play in less touches.

Week 3: Passing & Receiving Reds v White possession with target players on the outside. Reds play top to bottom, whites left to right. Teams score a point each time they transfer the ball from target to target. 1 st target player can join in the main area to create overload until possession is lost or other target hit. Player passing to target player replaces target player as play continues. Quality of passing weight, accuracy. Movement off the ball to create space to receive or for team mates to pass forward. Communication. Don t force, be patient in possession. Regular scrimmage, but teams can only lead by 1 goal so leading team should aim to keep possession. If other team ties the game, both teams can score again. Regular scrimmage Movement and shape of team to keep possession. Direction doesn t matter so use the while area. Losing team cant concede again so can use the goalkeeper for overload.

Week 4: Switching Play Passing pattern balls follow the arrows in a figure of 8 pattern. Change direction Introduce more balls. 2 touch Make teams, compeition as to which team completes most circuits completed Movement of the central players to give a better angle to get the ball from one side of the field to the other. Instep for shorter passes, driven passes for longer balls. Open body and receive on the back foot to open up to other side of the field and move on the ball quickly with minimal touches. 2 way communication between passing and receiving players. Passing pattern as before, but introduce the white player as a forward who starts high and check in to receive and lay of to central player for switch Add a second forward player on the other side of the pattern. 2 touch 1 touch. Movement and timing of movement to receive in the central areas. Open up body to make switches easier/quicker. Continue to encourage high tempo and quality passing and receiving. Communication on every pass.

Week 4: Switching Play Play 9v9 half field, 4 min goals all facing outwards. Both teams can score in any goal. Full game 1 touch finish Spread out in possession to keep the field big. Look to switch the ball around the field to attack an open goal. short passes to draw opponents in, long passes away from pressure. Don t force, be patient in possession. Encourage players to keep possession, and continue to look for the switch of play.

Week 5: Defending Players dribble at speed and pass the ball through the blue cones to the next player in the line joining the line they pass to. Both lines go at the same time. Player now passes the ball through the blue cones, runs around the orange cone and chases the player on the ball trying to tag them on the back for a point. Good first touch into space Try and move ball without breaking stride Smaller last touch to allow good pass through Change of speed to chase player Smaller steps around the cone Make run to chase player and try and block pass through the cones.

Week 5: Defending GK starts by throwing the ball out to the attacking team. Once an attacker touches the ball the 2 defenders on the outside run around the orange cone and back and then into the area to become recovering defenders creating 4v3 in favour of defenders. Defenders try and pass ball to next waiting defenders to win point. Red team try and score. Play 7v7, 8v8, 9v9 - angle and distance of cover - intercept pass (deny turn, deny penetration) - tracking (recovery runs etc.) - changing role of pressure and cover - visual and verbal communication If low numbers play with even teams or have a neutral player who plays for both teams.

Week 6: Defending Set cones out as show 10 yards apart. Players run out and apply pressure to cone by getting good defensive body shape. The move onto next cone (shown by line 1) Now players curve their run to apply pressure (shown by line 2) Now 2 players go at the same time, one applies pressure Line 3, player 1), the second provides cover (line 3 player 2) Get to the ball quick Surfer body pose when applying pressure Knees bent for balance Curve run to narrow options for attacking player Nearest player applies pressure, covering player drops back but mirrors body shape of pressuring player. Each line of cones now has a number (shown above) coach callls a number. The first player in each of the 4 lines move out. Nearest player to the numbered cone calls applies pressure. The other players provide cover and balance for pressuring player. As they get to the cone coach calls out new number and players move to the next line of cones. Until end of set of cones. Players must move and maintain shape, angles and distances as they move. Move at the same speed at player moving to pressure the ball Keep distances between players the same as players move.

Week 6: Defending Now create 2 teams for each of the 4 channels creating a 4v4 game. Players cant leave their channel. Teams try and get ball over opposition end line. Offside apply. Play 9v formation Apply quick pressure when ball in your channel Provide cover when ball in the channel next to yours.
