Indoor Soccer Rules Warning: Your participation in this sport could result in physical injury, which could be serious or fatal!! The University of North Carolina Wilmington assumes no responsibility for injuries and related medical expenses received during Intramural Sports activities. Students, faculty and staff are reminded that Intramural participation is completely voluntary. It is strongly recommended that all participants have a physical examination and secure adequate medical insurance prior to participation. All yellow highlighted rules are new rules for this year. All questions about rules/procedures not found in this document should be directed to the Competitive Sports staff. All rules not specifically covered in the Competitive Sports Indoor Soccer Rules will follow NFHS Soccer Rules. Staff may be contacted via ; imsports@uncw.edu, phone; PLAY (7529), or in person in the Student Recreation Center room Requirements (Valid UNCW One Card, Athletic Attire) a. All participants must present a valid UNCW One Card before participating in any Intramural game b. Shin guards STRONGLY encouraged c. Jewelry: NO JEWELRY! Earrings, rings, watches, bracelets and necklaces may not be worn during intramural competition. There will be no exceptions to this rule. Participants will be required to remove anything deemed harmful by the IM staff. (This can include rubber bands, necklaces, etc.) Any player wearing jewelry that cannot be removed quickly must leave the game and cannot return to the game until the next dead ball situation after the ball is returned to play. 2. Players a. The game shall be played with five (5) players on each team. A minimum of four (4) players is required to begin and continue play. b. One player must be designated as a goalie. The goalie may be substituted out, but the referee must be informed if this occurs. The goalie must wear a jersey that is a different color from their teammates and the opposing team. c. The goalkeeper may use his/her hands to handle the ball as long as the totality (one foot) of the goalkeeper s body and legs is in the confines of the vertical
plane of the goal area. The penalty for a goalkeeper handball infraction could result in a red card or indirect kick from the spot of the infraction. d. Substitutions will be made by means of the "on the fly rule". All substitutions will be on the fly, including the goalkeeper. The substituting player must remain in the team bench until the other team member is off the playing surface. The remaining team members must remain inside the team bench with the door shut and latched. Failure to do so will result in an indirect kick for the opposite team. This includes goalies, however, they need to notify the official before substituting. 3. Playing Field a. All games will be played inside the SRC MAC Gym. 4. Playing Time a. The game consists of two 20 minute halves. There will be no time-outs. There is a five (5) minute halftime. The clock shall run continuously. Ties will be broken with one 3-minute sudden death overtime; if the game is still tied, it will be broken with a shootout. 5. Start of Play a. For the kickoff, the ball is placed in a stationary position on the center spot. The referee gives a signal for the kickoff and a player of the team kicking off then takes a place kick. (This is the only place kick in the game). Every player must remain in his/her own half of the field until the ball has been played, and players of the team opposing the kicking off must be at least 10 feet from the ball until it has been kicked off. The ball must be kicked backwards into a team s own half of the field during the kickoff. b. During the kickoff the ball must travel the distance of its circumference to be in play. The kicker must not play a ball a second time on the kickoff until it has been played and/or touched by another player. 6. Ball In and Out of Play a. All walls are in play for the ball. b. Any ball kicked into the open spaces above the goals will be considered out of play. The ball is also out of play if it hits the net, screen, or above the first teal line on the wall. Balls kicked out of the playing area will be put in play by an indirect kick where the ball left the playing area, depending up on the judgment of the official. c. Any ball going out of play above the goal, or in contact with the areas designated above, will be put in play at the 28 mark on the basketball court (end of the coach s box). d. Any ball going above the second teal line in the air, hitting the ceiling, lights, goals, or any other structure will be placed directly below where the ball hit and put back into play by an indirect kick.
7. Goal Kick a. A goal kick must be taken by a player of the defending team. During the goal kick, the ball is not in play until it has passed beyond the limits of the goal area. The opposing team players must remain outside the goal area during the goal kick. Goal kicks are to be taken behind the end line. 8. Corner Kicks a. Ball is placed at the twenty-eight-foot mark on the basketball court s sideline. Members of the opposing team shall not be within 15 feet of the ball until it is kicked. The kicker shall not play the ball a second time until it has been touched by another player. 9. Free Kicks a. All free kicks are indirect b. Indirect free kicks A goal cannot be scored directly from an indirect free kick. All free kicks will be indirect, with the opposing team at a distance of 10 feet from the ball. Any penalty occurring in the goal box area (defined by the arced solid line) will result in a penalty kick (from the designated penalty spot), with all participants removed from the area (defined by the arced dashed line) except a goalie and a person taking the kick. Once the kick is taken regular play begins 10. Penalty Kicks a. Penalty kicks are awarded in cases where a violation committed by a defending player ordinarily requiring a direct free kick occurs in the penalty area. It shall be taken from the penalty spot and all players, except the kicker and the opposing goalie, are outside of the penalty area which is defined by the dashed arced teal line. The ball must be kicked forward and the kicker may not play the ball a second time until it has been touched by another player. The goalkeeper may move laterally on the goal line before the ball is kicked on a penalty kick but is not permitted to come off the goal line and move forward. 11. Goal Keeper a. The goalkeeper shall release the ball into play within six (6) seconds after taking possession/control and may not deliberately delay in getting rid of a ball in their possession. They may not be interfered with or impeded in any manner until the ball is cleared. Outside the penalty area the goalkeeper will not be afforded any special privileges. Goalkeepers may not touch the ball with their hands if it has been received by a directly kicked ball from a teammate. PENALTY: Indirect Free Kick awarded to opponent at spot of violation unless in goal area. Goalkeepers will not be allowed to punt or drop kick the ball. The ball must be thrown or rolled out at all times; balls may not be thrown past mid-court in the air, unless it has touched the ground, wall, or another player.
12. Slide Tackling and Play Against the Boards a. All players and goalkeepers are held to the following standards for sliding and checking players in the boards: i. Any slide without contact in the visual field of the opponent will result in an automatic Yellow card * This rule has changed in which the second person to slide without contact is no longer ejected. The player will still fall under the slide tackling provisions. ii. Any slide with contact or outside of the visual field of the opponent (i.e. from behind) will result in an automatic Red Card iii. Any attempt to check a player into the boards will result in a Yellow Card iv. Any actual check into the boards will result in a Red Card b. It is the Competitive Sports Staff Members discretion if a player should receive a red or yellow card for these infractions * All cards due to sliding are the judgement of the official and may not be protested. 13. Offsides will not be observed in any Intramural Sports Soccer Leagues. 14. Scoring a. In order to be a goal: i. A - The entire ball must pass completely into the recessed goals in the walls. ii. B - The ball must not be thrown, carried or propelled by the hand or arm. 15. Tie Game a. The following procedure will be used for games ending in a tie: i. A three-minute sudden death overtime period will determine the winner b. If the game is still tied at the end of the three-minute overtime i. A coin toss will take place with the team winning the toss having the choice to kick first or last in the series of penalty kicks. ii. Each team captain will choose five (5) players and arrange them in the order desired. iii. Each team will be given five (5) penalty kicks, taken by the five (5) players chosen and in the order as arranged by the team captain. iv. Kicks will be alternated between the teams. Player #1 from Team A; Player #1 from Team B, Player #2 from Team A; Player #2 from Team B; Players #3, #4, and #5 respectively. 1. In Men s and Women s Soccer, if the game is still tied after the five (5) shooters, the game will continue with a one (1) player shoot-out until a winner is determined. A team must exhaust all players before reusing a player again to shoot.
2. In CoRec, if the game is still tied after the five (5) shooters, the game will continue with another five (5) player shoot-out. Any five (5) players can shoot, meaning the same five can shoot. a. The shoot-out must alternate gender (male/female or female/male) v. Players who will kick must be ready within 15 seconds of the previous shot. From the time the referee blows the whistle to indicate the beginning of the kick, the player has 10 seconds to take a shot-on-goal. vi. All penalty kicks will be taken from the 3-foot line just outside the teal arc in the MAC GYM. Both teams will use the same goal. vii. Teams not meeting the time specifications will forfeit that kick on goal: 1. Kicker not ready forfeit that kick 2. Goalie not ready automatic goal for opposing team. viii. The goalie may be substituted for, but the referee must be informed. ix. In the event the score remains tied following the exchange of kicks, the process shall be repeated in a sudden victory format using one player from each team. x. If the goalie is guilty of an infraction, kickers may take the result of the attempt or attempt a re-kick. 16. Unsportsmanlike Conduct i. Unsportsmanlike conduct is penalized by a free kick. The referee may remove a player or spectator from the game and playing field if they deem it necessary. Any deliberate foul designed to prevent an obvious goal scoring opportunity will result in a disqualification (red card) being given to the offending player. ii. Any player that has been removed from the game must leave the field area. iii. If a player is ejected by receiving two cautions (2 yellow cards) or a player is disqualified for receiving a red card and a substitute may replace the ejected player. 17. Additional Co-Rec Modifications a. A regulation Co-Rec team consists of 5 players (one of which is the goalkeeper). A team may play with a minimum of 4 players. A MAXIMUM of 2 players of either gender is allowed on the playing field at a time, this does not include the goalkeeper. b. In case of a penalty kick, the person taking the kick must be of the same gender as the person who was fouled. c. The goalkeeper can be of either gender and may be substituted for at any time. d. If a shootout overtime period is needed, teams must alternate shots on goal between males and females. Both genders must attempt at least 2 of the 5 shots.
