1 NORTHERN VALLEY DEMAREST BOY'S SOCCER PLAYER DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM & SYSTEM OF PLAY
2 NORTHERN VALLEY DEMAREST PLAYER DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM TRAINING Freshman and Junior Varsity s primary focus is to develop technique and speed of play. Training will spend 60% on technique and 40% on tactics (1st, 2nd, 3rd attacking and defending). Players are to touch the ball as much as possible. Exercises with lines will be used as less as possible. Varsity team s focus will be more on tactics and speed of thought/reading the game (60% on tactics and 40% on technique). Training sessions are player based, where players are placed in situations where THEY must learn to make the correct decisions or corrected into making the proper decisions to accomplish the goal. Small sided games will be used almost at all training sessions. Training sessions are INTENSE, thus increasing the physical fitness and other physical demands of the game Before Training Begins: Players arrive minutes before training sessions dressed appropriately (soccer specific training shorts and designated training shirt, soccer specific socks, shinguards, and cleats) Once players are dressed, they must do one of the following short passes with a partner or group juggle by themselves, with a partner, or a group play keep away (4v2 or 5v3) no players by any means are to start shooting on net or passing long balls Training Format: Warm Up can be one or more of the following, SPARQ/Agility exercises A technical component based exercise with little to no opposition Players are to be touching the ball as much as possible for this exercise Exercise 1 and 2 will focus on Technique at hand with little opposition, a lot of repetition, and variety Players will need to be shown how to perform the technique to the best of the ability of the trainer Do not necessarily have to go to goal, however must have gradual increase in opposition Exercise 3 will focus on Small sided game format with triggers Trigger a condition to the game that will enhance the amount of opportunities to practice the technique
3 Activities are to goals with many attacking and defensive opportunities 5v5 or 6v6 only, rotation of teams after 3 5 mins of playing Scrimmage Scrimmages are done in small sided game formats without triggers, free play 6v6, 8v8, 9v9 games only numbers of attackers and defenders must be the same Once Training Ends: Cool down, if recommended by the coach Cool downs do not require slow jogging A player can lay on their back while another player shakes out their legs and then stretch ALL players and coaches are responsible for the equipment, not only the youngest ones ATTITUDE/PERSONALITY All the following characteristics that will be enforced fall under the core values all players must have to participate in the program: respect, discipline, unity, and hard work. Sportsmanship and Professionalism, respect for the opponent, teammates,coaching staff, and referee Communication Skills, able to listen and have dialogue with teammates, coaching staff, and referee Open Mindedness, open to opinions of others, critical of their own achievements, and analyze their own game Conformity to the values of NVD Boy's Soccer Program and that the team supersedes the individual Maturity to listen to their own bodies, avoid injuries, total concentration SELF EVALUATION & MATCH ANALYSIS Reflection is key for forms of growth. Reflection will be a key component of player development, however depending on coach s level of commitment will determine how much it will be used to influence the players. Post Game Self Evaluation after each game, a player will be given an index card where they have to respond to the following questions regarding the game Name: Date: Opponent: 1) How did you feel about your performance? 2) How was your level of determination? 3) What were you thinking about immediately before the game? 4) When were you playing your best, what was your focus? 5) What should be changed or adapted for the next game?
4 Match Analysis Depending on available technology, it is recommended for the teams to hold Classroom Match Analysis Sessions so players can review their matches and critique their own play as individuals and as a team Post Season Evaluation players are to evaluate their season as a whole Person Being Evaluated: Disagree Somewhat Neutral Somewhat Agree Disagree Agree I evaluate my performance by my own standards; I am self driven I tend to lash out and lose control; often have negative energy Through adversity, I remain positive I find myself saying, How does this benefit me? I find myself saying, What can we achieve together as a team? I see challenges, not problems My attitude and performance remains at a high level no matter what I set my own standards I am always dependable I am mentally insecure; I can become irritated and discouraged I have a positive, infectious energy and my teammates know it I can be trusted I have the potential to earn the right to be part of our elite team culture.
5 NORTHERN VALLEY DEMAREST SYSTEM OF PLAY Style of Play Attacking Principles of Play Penetration Combination Passing give and go s, overlaps Taking advantage of 1v1 and small sided situations where we have numbers up Create as many scoring opportunities as possible and shoot as much as possible Depth/Support Use of 2nd and 3rd attacker Passes are made to feet or onto the path of a run, NEVER to an open where players are not making that run and are made to chase Mobility 2nd and 3rd attacker constantly moving to make combination passing opportunities and unbalance defense Width Outside mids and defenders will use every inch of the pitch and get involved as much as possible in the attack Crosses will be used as much as possible Improvisation/Creativity Players are encouraged to use 1v1 moves, attack open space with and without the ball, and take risks Defending Principles of Play Pressure Constant pressure Aggressive, tenacious, relentless Delay Reading the situation Knowing when to contain and wait for help Depth/Balance/Compactness Reading the situation Providing the right coverage to make recovering possession easier Under , , or and it s different variations Attacking Combination Passing give and go s & overlaps Long Balls for switching point of attack and diagonal passing never played behind defense for mids and strikers to chase Penetrating passes are short to feet or to the path of a run Outside backs if possible, can play as role as outside mid from overlaps Center backs
