Frogbone Offense, V:1.5 The ullfrog Spread Option The ullfrog Spread Option, what we call the Frogbone, is a series based offense that uses the Triple Option as the core scheme, and is executed from a Run and Shoot Formation. The Frogbone has the potential to have WR's in the pass game and run an option game with R's. Thus spake the master oach: When you can know the error in the mesh, it will be time for you to leave.

TRIPLE OPTION SERIES

Inside Veer Option The Inside Veer option requires a reading or keying on certain defensive people Two defensive men on the line of scrimmage are not blocked by the offensive team The first defensive man past the nose of the defensive tackle is not touched and the next man out does not have to be blocked. The quarterback can either hand the football off to the dive back (fullback usually) according to the move of the first option man (dive key), or he can keep, or pitch on the movements of the next defensive opponent (pitch read).

Strengths of Inside Veer Option Series Since there are numerous plays in the series it can be the only series that has to be utilized by the offense It is easy to learn and understand for the offensive line, blocking rules are simple and not difficult to execute Only the defensive players inside of the offensive tackle have to be blocked along the LOS The other defensive players outside of the offensive tackle do not have to be forced or driven off the LOS Maximum speed is used along the entire line Offensive receivers release from the LOS forcing the defensive secondary to remain back or retreat The backs are running straight ahead Quick and fast option plays develop along the LOS Faking and deception occur along the LOS and not in the backfield Usually the best back is used to run the football with the quick hitting play Average personnel can easily be used with the entire series, brute force and power is not necessary ounters, reverses, and other options can easily be used with the Inside Veer option Play action passes can be used easily, because the offensive receivers are continually releasing from the LOS on every play

Inside Veer Option Summary Advantage of the Inside Veer option Attacks the open side of the defense Forces the defense to play assignment football away from the tight end Downhill blocking schemes create movement Zone combinations allow for easier blitz pickups Easy read for the Q omplementary and play action pass cause conflict in defenders Installation Rules Run to a 1/5 technique Run away from the TE T attacks outside hip of the guard Q reads the jersey number of the 5 tech If the 5 squeezes, pull and replace If the 5 comes upfield give and replace

Rules for Successful Inside Veer option To be successful at least two of the three phases (give, keep, pitch) have to be effective. To be really great all three phases need to be effective. It is best to have the strongest back at the / back position There cannot be AN penetration by the defense ecause the defenders at the end of the LOS are not blocked the offense can t afford to have any other defenders in the backfield The quarterback cannot be indecisive First decision Who is the dive read? annot allow a poor mesh with the fullback This can happen if the fullback gets off the path or the Q footwork is not proper annot allow poor perimeter blocking Receivers should spend more time on blocking than on catching the ball Offensive linemen have to get to the next level OL must get off the LOS and into the L s to cut pursuit

Expected Defensive Responses Forces the defense to play assignment football away from the tight end The DT/IL will take F on the dive to force the keep The DE takes the Q to force pitch The OL//S (outside force) will take the pitch Advantage of the Inside Veer option Attacks the open side of the defense Downhill blocking schemes create movement Zone combinations allow for easier blitz pickups Easy read for the Q omplementary and play action pass cause conflict in defenders

Inside Veer Option Operations Stance The Q s stance should be a comfortable one with his feet shoulder width apart and his knees flexed slightly. The knees should be flexed to allow the Q to explode from the center on the snap. The Q s hands should be placed under the center with his thumbs side byside and his fingers spread and relaxed Just prior to the snap he shifts his weight to the backside foot so he can push off hard with the playside foot UNDER ENTER: After receiving the snap the Q s first step is an open step at a 5 degree angle away from the LOS PISTOL: After receiving the snap the first step is to pivot forward on the playside foot. If the play is to the right he pivots on the right foot. To the left he pivots on the left foot. y stepping away from the LOS the Q accomplishes things Steps He has moved away from the distraction of the blocking on the LOS which will allow him better concentration He has moved the mesh area into the backfield which eliminates the possibility of a defensive linemen getting his hand involved in the mesh. This eliminates a possible fumble in the mesh phase of the Inside Veer. He has given himself a better angle to read the hand off key He has given himself a better angle to approach the pitch key, He is moving to the pitch key down hill, which enhances the play because the pitch key must make a quicker decision. Also, by approaching the pitch key at this angle, the Q actually improves his running ability because he will be upfield sooner if he keeps the ball.

Inside Veer Option Operations Phase Give Read 1st defender on the LOS outside the block of the playside tackle Pitch Read Next defender outside of the End defender on the LOS (EMLOS) Action If the hand off key is crashing toward the fullback, the Q pulls the ball into his own numbers without meshing The Q then positions the ball for a quick pitch as his eyes go directly to the pitch key. If the hand off key does anything else but crash the Q places the ball in the fullbacks hand off pocket while still reading the hand off key The Q takes his second step which is a catch up step with his off side leg The Q should ride the fullback toward the LOS until he decides to give or to keep Q reads the jersey number of the Give Read If the Read Key squeezes, pull and replace If the Read Key comes upfield give and replace If the Q decides to give the ball he removes the hand closest to the fullback from the ball and pushes the ball into the fullbacks numbers with the other hand After giving the ball to the fullback the Q must accelerate to the pitch key and fake a pitch If the Q decides to keep he pulls the ball into his own numbers and accelerates to the pitch key He does NOT belly back or give ground, he attacks the inside shoulder of the read key The quicker the Q decides to give or keep the better the play will be executed The sooner the decision is made the sooner the fullback will know whether he is a blocker or runner which will make him more effective at either. The fullback is NEVER a faker He is either a blocker or a runner The sooner the decision the faster the Q can get to the pitch key and either run or pitch The speed of the play is dependent upon a quick decision by the Q The final advantage of the quick read is the reduction in fumbles

If going for the onside gap, throw head in front and attempt to stop pursuit of the defender. Drive lock #1, may double with to SIL Fire out hard and low for the defensive counterpart. Keep a wide base, shoulders square, tail down, and head up to make a good block. Read the defense for the proper block. ST Drive lock # Fire out hard and low at defensive man. Throw head for mid section and slide tot he onside. Use hands if going to the ground. Keep a wide base and head up when performing the block. lock outside 1/3 or run fade (9) If running fade, go hard on pattern. Do not slow up. Defender will eventually know when the play is going away. If blocking, go full speed. It does not do any good to slow down. If the the slot/flanker does a good job, the counters and counter options execute well.

Triple Option Tags hanging the blocking calls MA change who the Q sees as the read keys. Just as the defense will attempt to control who gets the ball by setting their assignments, these blocking schemes attempt to confound those assignments by varying who the play side A back is blocking. While the PS A is attempting to make these blocks, and there are Q thoughts associated with each, the Q has to make his reads and decide on the fly, he cannot make the decision who gets the ball pre snap based simply on the blocking call. These tags DO NOT alter the OL blocking assignments in any way. Tag PS / Q/1 PS A 3/ / S A 3/ Tag Notes Arc #1, Option F/$ Dive Pitch Normal call, meaning the PS A is blocking the safety, who will normally be taking the pitch (force player). Will have the two reads close so the Q should be thinking that pitch is likely. ob #1, Option OL Dive Pitch PS A is blocking the OL who would normally be the Q keep/pitch read. The pitch may be covered so the Q should be thinking that keep is likely. ubble #1, Option Pitch (ubble) Dive MDM Triple option with no motion. The PS A is the 'Pitch' player by running the ubble route. Flip #1, Option ut Motion, ecome Dive back Pitch Stalk #, MDM The assignments for the A back and the back are swapped. There is no lead blocker, the defense is likely to rotate to account for the motion. Load #1, Option EMLOS (rack) Dive Pitch PS A is blocking on the EMLOS who is usually the dive read. This means that the keep and pitch options may be covered. The Q should be thinking that give is likely. Shovel #1, Option OL Pitch Dive The back goes in Pitch path and the A back becomes the dive back. The Q makes the read and if it is a Give he passes forward to the A back, the Shovel pass. Switch F/$ Option #1, Dive Pitch The / and the PS A switch assignments, the PS A goes to #1, usually the, and the / attacks the $ who is usually the force player. Wheel & Seal control the gap oaching Points ounter Option requires that the pulling guard get a good log block on the DE. This is a difficult block and must be practiced. If the DE is taught to lock Down Step Down then it is likely that the OG can get the block. The play starts like Inside Veer to the right then the Q and motion back stop and reverse path.
