Friday night s matchup will be held at the GIANT Center in Hershey, Pa., before the teams end their series Saturday at Greenberg Ice Pavilion. SCOUTING OHIO The Bobcats are the fifth-ranked team in the American Collegiate Hockey Association. Led by 12th-year head coach Dan Morris, the Bobcats have won their past five games and hold a 22-5-3 overall record. LAST YEAR VS. Penn State held a 48-31-5 record against the Bobcats from 1981-2012. The teams faced off in the national championship game five times with Penn State prevailing twice (1998, 2003) and Ohio winning in 1988, 1995 and 2004. SUCCESS IN FIRST B1G ROAD TRIP The Nittany Lions travelled to Big Ten country for the first time, splitting their weekend series with Michigan State. After falling to the Spartans, 5-3, Jan. 25, the Nittany Lions erased a 2-0 deficit in a 3-2 victory in their first nationally-televised game (BTN) Jan. 26. Defenseman Mark Yanis put Penn State on the board with a second-period power-play goal before Casey Bailey tied the game at 3:13 of the third period. BIG TEN SUCCESS Penn State is 2-1-0 against future Big Ten opponents in 2012-13. The Nittany Lions defeated Ohio State in the Three Rivers Classic Dec. 29 and split their two-game series against Michigan State Jan. 25-26. COMING TOGETHER Since being placed on the same line against Fredonia State Dec. 11, freshman Casey Bailey (7g, 6a), sophomore Max Gardiner (9a) and junior Taylor Holstrom (6g, 4a) have combined for 32 points to lead the Nittany Lions. Rich O Brien (20), Connor Varley (18), Joseph Lordo (18), Peter Sweetland (17) and Nate Jensen (14), are among the team s top shot-blocking defensemen. Michael Longo (16) leads the Nittany Lion forwards. IN THE CIRCLE Freshman David Glen leads the team with a.585 faceoff percentage with at least 75 draw attempts Eric Steinour (.542), Max Gardiner (.541), Taylor Holstrom (.539) and Casey Bailey (.495) round out the team s top-five centermen. MAKING IT COUNT The Nittany Lions are 8-5-0 when David Glen records at least one point and 8-6-0 when Casey Bailey reaches the scoresheet. Penn State is 6-4-0 when sophomore Max Gardiner registers an assist. POWER PLAY FOR THE WIN Penn State holds a 7-2-0 record when it scores a power-play goal. PENALTY KILL Penn State has given its opposition at least two power-play opportunities in each game this season. After surrendering five goals in 19 chances to open the season, the Penn State penalty kill has gone 73-for-84 (.869) during the last 16 games. FRESHMAN IMPACT All nine of Penn State s skating freshmen have recorded at least one point during the 2012-13 season. Penn State freshmen account for seven of the Nittany Lions top-10 point-scorers. SPREADING THE WEALTH Penn State has had at least five different goal scorers in three games this season (Oct. 26 at Army, Oct. 27 at Sacred Heart, Nov. 10 vs. Air Force). Nineteen players have recorded at least two points, while 21 Nittany Lions have reached the scoresheet. LIONS KNOCK OFF VERMONT Junior Taylor Holstrom and Justin Kirchhevel recorded two points each and four different Nittany Lions scored in a 4-2 win against Vermont at Wells Fargo Center Jan. 19. Freshman Casey Bailey and David Glen also tallied their then-team-leading 11th goals of the season.

RECORD-SETTING CROWD With 19,529 in the stands at Wells Fargo Center Jan. 19, the Penn State vs. Vermont game was the most attended college hockey game in an NHL arena. PENNSYLVANIA TOUR The Nittany Lions have played in both Pennsylvania-based NHL arenas, as well as the Penguins AHL venue in Wilkes-Barre. Penn State also defeated RIT, 3-2, at the home of the Rochester Americans. GADOWSKY MILESTONE With Penn State s 4-2 victory against Vermont Jan. 19, head coach Guy Gadowsky set a new personal best as a first-year bench boss. During his first seasons with Alaska and Princeton, he guided the squads to six and eight victories, respectively, before leading the teams to program highs. Gadowsky led Alaska to its only 20-win season as a CCHA member in 2001-02 and guided Princeton to a program-best 21 victories in 2007-08 before garnering 22 victories the following season. QUICK TO THE NET Against UConn Jan. 5, freshman forward Casey Bailey scored the fastest goal in program history when he lit the lamp just 13 seconds into the game. ENDING A STREAK With Casey Bailey s goal against UConn Jan. 5, the Nittany Lions broke a streak of eight straight NCAA Division I contests of allowing the game s first marker. Penn State last held a 1-0 lead Nov. 10 against Air Force. PENN STATE FALLS TO NEUMANN The Nittany Lions fell to Neumann, 3-2, in overtime at Greenberg Ice Pavilion Jan. 15. Freshmen Casey Bailey and David Glen tallied their team-leading 10th goals of the year. LIONS SPLIT WITH TEAM USA The Nittany Lions split its weekend exhibition series with the U.S. National Under-18 Team Jan. 11-12. Friday night, Penn State erased a 2-0 deficit with five straight goals in a 5-2 win. Kenny Brooks led Penn State with a pair of goals, while George Saad, Tommy Olczyk and Joseph Lordo also scored. Matthew Skoff turned aside 27 shots. Team USA rebounded with a 3-0 victory Saturday night. PJ Musico made 41 saves against the U.S. LIONS END AHA SCHEDULE Penn State finished the Atlantic Hockey portion of its schedule with two losses to UConn Jan. 4-5. The Nittany Lions went 5-8-0 against AHA foes in 2012-13. Penn State s Atlantic Hockey schedule consisted of AIC (10/12-13), RIT (10/20), Army (10/26), Sacred Heart (10/27), Air Force (11/9-10), Holy Cross (12/7-8), Robert Morris (12/15, 28), UConn (1/4-5). BAILEY S BIG NIGHT Freshman Casey Bailey recorded a career-high four points (2g, 2a) in Penn State s 5-4 victory against Ohio State Dec. 29. The Anchorage, Alaska, native had a hand in the Nittany Lions last four goals and was named to the Three Rivers Classic All-Tournament Team for his efforts. RECORD CROWDS Penn State was greeted by the thenlargest crowds to ever watch Nittany Lion hockey at the Three Rivers Classic at CONSOL Energy Center. Against Robert Morris Dec. 28, 11,663 fans watched Penn State battle the Colonials while 10,797 fans made their way to CONSOL for the Ohio State matchup Dec. 29. THREE RIVERS CLASSIC RECAP Penn State fell to Robert Morris, 6-0, in the opening game of the Three Rivers Classic before defeating Ohio State, 5-4, Dec. 29. The Deephaven, Minn., native, who tallied three points (1g, 2a) in 17 games with Minnesota in 2010-11, has two goals and six assists in 2012-13. LIONS SPLIT WITH FALCONS Penn State split its weekend series with Air Force Nov. 9-10, falling to the Falcons 5-1 Friday night before rebounding with a 5-1 win Saturday. Air Force s 5-1 victory snapped the Nittany Lions four-game win streak. Justin Kirchhevel scored the lone goal Friday, while five different Lions reached the back of the net Saturday. Freshman Matthew Skoff made a career-high 31 saves Saturday for his second win of the season. KIRCHHEVEL MAKES HISTORY Justin Kirchhevel s third-period shorthanded goal against Air Force Nov. 9 was the program s first-ever at the NCAA level. STREAKING LIONS The Nittany Lions recorded a seasonbest four-game win streak from Oct. 20-Nov. 3. During that stretch, the Nittany Lions outscored their opponents by an 18-7 margin. Opposing teams were 1-for-20 on the power play. Penn State was down for a combined 6:17 during its four-game win streak. The Nittany Lions fell behind both Sacred Heart and Buffalo State, 1-0, for 32 seconds and 5:45, respectively, before tallying equalizing goals. FIRST HOME WIN Penn State collected its first home win in program history with a 4-2 victory against Buffalo State Nov. 3. Freshman David Glen extended his point-scoring streak to four games with a pair of goals, while senior Michael Longo and sophomore Tommy Olczyk also scored. Freshman goaltender Matthew Skoff made 23 saves for his first win. PSU SWEEPS ARMY, SHU Six different players scored as Penn State topped Sacred Heart, 6-3, Oct. 27. Penn State fell behind, 1-0, before scoring three goals in a 5:06 span to take a 3-1 lead. Senior forward Michael Longo and junior defenseman Nate Jensen scored their first goals of the season. ANOTHER MILESTONE SET With a 5-0 win against Army, Penn State earned its first shutout in the NCAA Division I era. Sophomore goaltender PJ Musico stopped all 34 Army shots for the shutout and improved to 3-0-0 on the season. Penn State defeated Army, 5-0, for its first win against the Black Knights in a series that dates back to the 1940s. Five different Nittany Lions scored (Casey Bailey, Kenny Brooks, David Glen, Jonathan Milley, Peter Sweetland) in the game while Bailey and Glen registered a goal and two assists each. Brooks and Sweetland both scored their first collegiate goals. BLAST FROM THE PAST Penn State and Army twice played during the Nittany Lions varsity years in the 1940s. Penn State fell to the Black Knights, 18-3, Feb. 26, 1944 and by a 12-13 margin Feb. 14, 1947. Both games were played at West Point. Army is one of three Penn State opponents from the 1940s (Cornell, Colgate) that still sponsors varsity hockey. Penn State took a 1-0 lead in the first period and a 3-1 third-period advantage before the Yellow Jackets tied the game in the third. NHL CONNECTIONS Several members of the team have family members who play or have played on NHL teams. Max Gardiner s brother, Jake, plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs. George Saad s brother, Brandon, appeared in two games with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2011-12. Tommy Olczyk s dad, Eddie, was a 16-year NHL veteran who helped the Rangers win the Stanley Cup in 1994. GADOWSKY NAMED HEAD COACH Twelve-year NCAA coaching veteran Guy Gadowsky was na med Penn State s first NCAA Division I coach on April 24, 2011. Gadowsky served as head coach at both Princeton (2004-11) and Alaska (1999-2004) before coming to Penn State. He helped Princeton to two NCAA tournament appearances (2008, 2009) and the 2009 ECAC Hockey championship. vs. OHIO Friday, Feb. 1, 2013 FRIENDLY CONFINES Greenberg Ice Pavilion, which opened in January 1981, will serve as Penn State s home for the 2012-13 season. HOME SWEET (ALMOST) HOME Construction is underway for the future home of Penn State Hockey, Pegula Ice Arena, near the corner of University Drive and Curtin Road. The $90-million facility will feature two rinks, including a main rink with a 6,000- seat capacity and 1,000-seat student section. The facility is scheduled to be completed by September 2013. BIG TEN ON THE HORIZON With the addition of Penn State to NCAA hockey world, the Big Ten created a new hockey conference that will begin competition for the 2013-14 season. Penn State will join Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State and Wisconsin in the league.
